To monitor AI agents reliably, you need more than a chat transcript. Establish an inventory with accountable owners, give every agent a traceable identity, record a complete execution trail, connect each action to the data resource it touched, and send security-relevant events to your detection team. Add least-privilege permissions, data-loss prevention, approval gates and a tested shutdown process. This lets you answer, for every material action: which user or service initiated it, which agent and version acted, what data it accessed, what tools it called, which policies applied, and what happened next.
What monitoring an AI agent actually means
An AI agent can read information, choose a plan, call tools and change systems with limited human intervention. That delegated authority is why a basic application log is insufficient. Monitoring must connect identity, intent, data access, decisions and outcomes into one trace.

Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework describes the target plainly: “Every agent must be observable, governed, and secure.” It also recommends a centralized governance layer that enforces identity, ownership, access control and continuous monitoring across agents. NIST’s February 5, 2026 concept paper similarly warns that giving agents access to diverse data, tools and applications requires strong identification and authorization controls. The paper is an emerging concept paper, not a mandatory standard, but its risk model is useful when designing controls.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The questions your monitoring system should answer
- What agents exist, who owns them and where are they deployed?
- Which identity initiated a run, and which agent identity or version performed each action?
- What task or prompt led to the run, subject to your privacy and redaction policy?
- Which tools, functions, files, sites, records or APIs were used?
- What policy checks, approvals, denials, errors and outcomes occurred?
- Can investigators reconstruct the sequence without exposing secrets or unnecessary personal data?
Start with an agent inventory and accountable ownership
You cannot interpret activity you do not know exists. Create one registry covering production, development, test and third-party agents, including agents embedded in business applications and automated workflows. Require a named business owner and technical owner before activation. An owner must be able to approve access, review alerts, answer audit questions and retire the agent.

Minimum registry fields
| Category | Record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Agent ID, service principal or managed identity, delegated-user method, environment and tenant or workspace |
| Ownership | Business owner, technical owner, support contact and escalation path |
| Capability | Model and provider, agent version, tools and functions, destinations and transaction limits |
| Data | Connected sources, sensitivity classes, labels, geographic or residency constraints and permitted operations |
| Lifecycle | Deployment date, current state, review cadence, change history and planned retirement date |
| Risk | Risk tier, human-approval requirements, external-sharing capability and destructive-action capability |
Use a centralized control plane or registry as the authoritative record. A deployment should fail closed when required ownership, identity, permissions or review information is missing. Reconcile the registry with cloud resources, code repositories and application inventories on a schedule so abandoned agents do not retain access.
Give every action a trustworthy identity
Identity is the link between an event and a responsible principal. Prefer a distinct managed identity for an autonomous agent, or securely derive the user identity when the agent acts on a user’s behalf. Use short-lived, scoped credentials rather than long-lived keys. Downstream systems should enforce the same permissions the user is entitled to when a user-delegated flow is intended.
Authorization controls
- Apply least privilege separately to each agent; do not reuse a broad administrator account.
- Grant only the tools, operations, data sources and destinations required for the registered purpose.
- Use conditional-access controls appropriate to the workload, user, device, network and risk.
- Require a fresh approval for high-impact operations such as destructive changes, external sharing, financial transactions, identity changes or unusually large exports.
- Set rate, volume and transaction thresholds so a compromised or misbehaving agent cannot operate without bounds.
- Review and remove unused permissions whenever the agent, owner, model, tools or data sources change.
Record both identities when delegation is involved: the human or service that initiated the task and the agent identity that executed it. If a platform cannot preserve that relationship, treat the gap as a material audit limitation and compensate with tighter approvals and narrower permissions.
Capture an execution trace, not just a final answer
A useful trace shows how an outcome was produced. Microsoft recommends logging plans, tool calls, decisions and outcomes. Your event envelope should be immutable or tamper-evident, have a stable correlation identifier, and be usable across application, identity and data systems.

Recommended event schema
| Field group | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Correlation | Event ID, session or run ID, parent and child trace IDs, timestamp and tenant or workspace | Reconstructs one run across services and retries |
| Principal | Initiating user, service principal, agent ID, agent version and environment | Attributes responsibility and detects unregistered versions |
| Intent | Task or prompt reference, workflow name and policy-approved purpose; redact or hash content when required | Explains why access occurred without creating an unnecessary content store |
| Model | Model and provider, configuration or policy version where available | Identifies behavior changes after a model or configuration update |
| Tools | Tool or function name, destination, parameters subject to redaction, start and completion status | Shows the exact capabilities exercised |
| Data | System, file, site, record or object identifiers, sensitivity label and access decision | Answers which resources were read, changed or shared |
| Decision and control | Plan step, policy result, approval request, approver, denial reason and exception reference | Proves that safeguards operated and identifies overrides |
| Outcome | Result, changed-resource identifiers, error class, retry count and completion time | Distinguishes a proposed action from an executed one |
Do not put passwords, API keys, session tokens or full credentials in telemetry. Redact secrets and unnecessary personal data at the collector, not only in a dashboard. Keep enough stable identifiers to investigate, and protect any mapping needed to resolve them.
Make data access visible across systems
Activity monitoring becomes meaningful when an event names the resource and its sensitivity. Connect agent traces to file, site, database, SaaS and API audit records. In Microsoft 365 environments, Purview documentation says supported AI interactions can place prompts and responses in the unified audit log and can include the service involved and references to files accessed. Exact fields, supported applications, retention and regional availability vary by tenant and product version, so verify the current documentation for your deployment.
Build a resource-level answer
For each access, preserve the agent, delegated user (if any), resource identifier, operation, timestamp, sensitivity label, policy decision and correlation ID. A correlation ID lets an investigator move from an agent event to the underlying file or service audit record and then to an approval or DLP decision. Where a platform reports only aggregate usage, document that limitation rather than presenting an inference as a file-level audit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClassify connected sources before granting access. Separate confidential, regulated and public data stores, and prevent a public-facing agent from reaching confidential sources unless a documented business case and explicit controls exist. Apply DLP to both inputs and outputs: a prompt can disclose sensitive data, and a generated answer or tool result can disclose it externally.

Define policy before you watch for violations
Monitoring is not a substitute for prevention. For each agent, define an allowlist of tools, data classes, destinations and operations. Specify which actions are read-only, which require approval and which are prohibited. Version these policies and include the policy version in each decision event.
Actions that normally deserve an approval gate
- Deleting, overwriting or bulk-modifying records
- Sending data outside the organization or changing sharing permissions
- Moving money, placing orders or changing financial records
- Creating, disabling or elevating identities and access rights
- Exporting large volumes or accessing a new sensitivity class
- Operating outside the owner’s approved change window
An approval should identify the requested action, affected resources, risk reason, approver, time, expiration and final result. If the approval expires or is denied, the tool call must be blocked rather than merely logged.
Route telemetry to detection and response systems
Keep operational traces in the application observability system, but forward security-relevant events to the SOC or SIEM. Microsoft names Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Defender and Sentinel as examples of a layered approach. The specific products are less important than the integration: identity, agent, tool, data and policy events must be searchable together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Useful detections
- A new agent, unregistered version or deployment without an owner
- Privilege changes, new data-source connections or a sudden expansion of tool scope
- Unusual data volume, destination, geography, device or access time
- Repeated policy-denied calls, failed approvals or rapid retries
- Prompt-injection indicators followed by attempts to bypass tool restrictions
- Tool sequences that differ sharply from the agent’s established baseline
- Actions outside the owner’s change window or after an agent was scheduled for retirement
Baseline normal sequences, volumes and destinations per agent and environment. A single unusual prompt may be benign; a new destination followed by a large export and repeated policy denials is a stronger signal. Tune alerts against analyst workload and false positives, and preserve the correlated records needed for investigation.

Prepare a rapid containment path
- Identify the agent, session, initiating principal and affected resources from the alert’s correlation ID.
- Disable the agent or revoke its short-lived credentials using a documented emergency procedure.
- Block outstanding tool calls and invalidate pending approvals.
- Preserve tamper-evident logs, relevant data-access records and policy versions.
- Assess exposure, notify the responsible owner and security team, and apply required legal or regulatory processes.
- Restore access only after permissions, prompts, tools, model version and safeguards have been reviewed.
Test the kill switch and credential-revocation procedure periodically. A control that has never been exercised may not work during a live incident.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect the logs themselves
Agent logs can contain prompts, file names, business context and personal information, making them a sensitive data store. Set retention according to legal, regulatory and investigative needs rather than keeping everything indefinitely. Restrict log search and export to people with a documented need to know, encrypt records in transit and at rest, and record who accessed or exported them.
Use classification, retention, eDiscovery and DLP workflows for the telemetry repository where those capabilities are available. Define separate access for operators, investigators, auditors and application owners. Never store actual session tokens in logs. Redact secrets and unnecessary content while retaining enough metadata to establish what happened.
A practical implementation sequence
- Establish the registry. Discover agents across code, cloud, SaaS and workflow platforms; assign owners, risk tiers, lifecycle states and retirement dates.
- Map authority. List each agent’s identity, delegated-user flow, tools, data sources, destinations and permissions. Remove unused access before enabling detailed automation.
- Define the schema. Version the event envelope and require timestamps, correlation IDs, identities, agent version, tool calls, data references, policy decisions, approvals, errors and outcomes.
- Instrument execution. Emit events at run start, plan creation, tool request, policy decision, approval, tool result, data access, error and completion. Make retries and child runs link to the parent.
- Join data records. Connect agent events with file, site, application, identity and DLP audit records so investigators can resolve resource-level access.
- Enforce policy. Apply least privilege, conditional access, data classification, DLP, rate limits and approval gates. Block prohibited calls instead of relying on after-the-fact review.
- Integrate response. Forward security events to the SOC or SIEM, create detections, and document disablement and credential-revocation steps.
- Set privacy and retention. Redact secrets, restrict readers, encrypt records, define retention and document export authority.
- Test and review. Simulate unusual access, prompt injection, failed approvals, high-volume exports and owner changes; review inventory, permissions, exceptions and alert quality on a scheduled cadence.
How to evaluate monitoring products or an internal approach
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Identity fidelity | Can every action be tied to a user, service principal, agent and version? Is delegated identity preserved? |
| Event depth | Does it capture prompts or task references, plans, tool calls, data references, decisions, approvals and outcomes? |
| Data context | Are file or object IDs, sensitivity labels and DLP decisions available across systems? |
| Response | Are alerts, SIEM connectors, approval gates, credential revocation and emergency disablement supported? |
| Privacy and retention | Can you redact, restrict, export, retain and investigate records in the required region and time period? |
| Coverage | Does it cover SaaS agents, custom applications, cloud workloads, on-premises systems and third-party agents? |
| Operational cost | What ingestion, licensing, storage, analyst and false-positive costs will the design create? |
Common gaps and how to correct them
“We have chat transcripts, so we have an audit trail.”
Transcripts usually omit the exact tool parameters, resource identifiers, policy decisions and retries that explain a consequential action. Add structured execution events and correlate them with system audit logs.
Best Value
“The agent uses the user’s account, so access is covered.”
A user identity without an agent identity hides which software version acted and makes service-to-service activity difficult to attribute. Preserve both identities and the delegation relationship.
“We log everything for safety.”
Unfiltered logs increase privacy and breach impact. Redact secrets, minimize raw content, restrict access and retain records for a documented purpose.
“The model is read-only.”
Read access can still expose confidential information through prompts, generated responses, exports or external destinations. Monitor data references and output controls, not only write operations.
“An alert is enough.”
An alert without a tested disablement and credential-revocation path does not contain an incident. Exercise the response procedure and verify that pending approvals and sessions can be stopped.
