How to Monitor a YouTube 24/7 Stream for Outages with FFmpeg Logs

Use two independent checks: monitor FFmpeg’s process and timestamped progress locally, then verify stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg can show that the encoder is still working; it cannot prove YouTube is receiving the stream or viewers can watch it.

What to monitor—and what each signal proves

Signal What it tells you What it cannot confirm
FFmpeg process and exit status Whether the encoder process is running or has exited. That frames are advancing or YouTube is receiving the output.
FFmpeg progress records Whether FFmpeg is reporting ongoing encoding or muxing progress. That the ingest connection is healthy or the public stream is playable.
YouTube Live Control Room health and status Whether YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue; it also provides real-time analytics. That every viewer can play the stream smoothly.
Independent watch-page check Whether the stream is accessible and its audio and video appear to work from that device and network. That all viewers or networks have the same experience.

Use all three layers where possible: local process, YouTube ingest status, and a human check of playback. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality and verifying that a stream is accessible. Its guidance also cautions: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” YouTube streaming tips.

How to monitor FFmpeg logs

Write persistent, timestamped logs

FFmpeg writes log messages to stderr by default. Add a timestamped log format and redirect stderr to a persistent file so you can correlate local events with YouTube’s timestamped errors. For builds that support the options shown, a typical log-level setting is -loglevel repeat+level+datetime+info. Confirm option behavior against the FFmpeg version installed on your host.

You can also use -report or the FFREPORT environment variable to save a report containing the command and log output. Treat report files as sensitive: if the command line included a stream key, the report may contain it. Rotate logs and restrict access; do not publish them or send them unredacted.

Emit machine-readable progress separately

Use -progress pipe:1 to make FFmpeg emit periodic key-value records, and set -stats_period to choose the update interval. Each update ends with a progress field. A supervisor or monitoring script can parse these records and record the time of the last update.

If a wrapper reads progress from stdout, keep it separate from stderr’s human-readable log messages. A record such as progress=continue indicates FFmpeg emitted a progress update; it does not confirm YouTube ingest health.

Illustrative command shape

This is a pattern, not a complete streaming command. Add the actual input, encoding and mapping settings, and the YouTube RTMPS output for your setup. The bracketed text is explanatory and must be replaced; it is not a shell command option.

In a real deployment, stdout progress needs a consumer—a service wrapper, script, or monitoring agent—to parse the key=value records, save heartbeat times, and raise alerts. The example’s five-second reporting interval is illustrative, not an official alert threshold or availability guarantee. Choose a stale-progress threshold to suit your interval and acceptable outage time.

How to alert without mistaking activity for availability

Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager that records exit status and applies a deliberate retry policy. Configure alerts for separate events, rather than treating one signal as proof that the whole stream is healthy:

  • FFmpeg exits: capture the exit status and alert.
  • Progress goes stale: alert when no progress record arrives within your locally chosen threshold.
  • YouTube reports a health problem or preview disappears: check Live Control Room and alert on the platform-side signal.
  • Playback fails or degrades: have a person check the public watch page’s audio and video from an independent device or network.

These are separate monitoring signals, not a vendor-prescribed configuration. A local threshold depends on your chosen progress interval and tolerated detection delay; there is no universal FFmpeg or YouTube threshold for this workflow. YouTube’s stream-health and real-time analytics are available in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics and health guidance.

How to investigate an outage

  1. FFmpeg exited: inspect its final stderr lines, any report file, the service manager’s exit status, disk space, source availability, and host resource state. Check CPU load and encoder errors as part of the investigation.
  2. FFmpeg is running but progress is stale: treat the encoder as stalled until you establish otherwise. Check its logs, host resources, and input source. Compare the elapsed time with your configured progress interval and local alert threshold.
  3. Progress advances but YouTube reports unhealthy or has no preview: inspect the output connection, configured stream URL and key, outbound network, and available upload bandwidth. Use YouTube’s specific health message to guide the next check; an active encoder alone does not establish a working ingest.
  4. Live Control Room looks healthy but viewers report trouble: open the watch page from an independent device or network and check actual audio and video playback. Dashboard health is an important signal, not proof of a smooth experience for every viewer.

YouTube’s error notices are timestamped and distinguish critical red errors from moderate yellow issues. Compare an error’s time with FFmpeg and host logs before changing settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes encoder errors, CPU load, source audio and video, the local archive, and outbound connectivity as areas to investigate. YouTube troubleshooting guidance.

Prepare the stream and failover before relying on it

  • Confirm that FFmpeg has the intended YouTube stream URL and key. Treat the key as a credential; reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised. Keep it out of shared logs, reports, and process listings where the environment permits. YouTube encoder setup.
  • Run a test, inspect the preview, and verify the watch page is accessible before relying on the continuous stream.
  • Check that the source has the expected audio and video and that any local archive is available where applicable.
  • Check outbound upload capacity and leave headroom. YouTube’s guidance recommends a 20% margin above the bitrate used for streaming.
  • Test a backup encoder and failover path rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
  • Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and test the workflow again after changes to the host, encoder, network, or stream configuration.

FFmpeg reconnect options are protocol-specific. Do not assume that an input reconnect option guarantees that an RTMP or RTMPS output will reconnect to YouTube.
