How to Monitor a Website Screenshot After Logging In

To monitor a page that requires login, use browser automation to sign in with an authorized test account, save the authenticated browser state securely, and reuse it for scheduled captures. Verify that the protected page actually loaded, wait for stable content, take a screenshot, and compare it with a reviewed baseline. A screenshot alone is only a snapshot; monitoring requires repeating the capture and deciding how to handle differences.

Build an authenticated screenshot check with Playwright

Playwright supports reusable authentication state and screenshot comparison. The example below uses Playwright Test: sign in once to create a storage-state file, then load that state in a test that checks a protected dashboard against an approved screenshot. Follow the Playwright authentication guide and screenshot assertion documentation for the current APIs and configuration details.

1. Install Playwright and configure the test

In a Node.js project, install the test package and its browser:

npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install chromium

Create playwright.config.ts. The example runs a single Chromium project to reduce rendering variation; adjust it if you intentionally monitor other browsers.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  use: {
    baseURL: 'https://example.com',
    browserName: 'chromium',
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
    storageState: 'playwright/.auth/user.json',
  },
});

Replace the example domain and viewport with the site and capture dimensions you need. Keep the browser, operating system, fonts, and viewport consistent between baseline creation and later runs; differences in the rendering environment can produce visual diffs even when the page has not meaningfully changed. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

2. Sign in and save state once

Create tests/save-auth.ts. Use the site’s supported login form and an authorized test account. The selectors below are examples: replace them with selectors for the actual sign-in page and wait for a stable element that appears only after login.

import { chromium } from '@playwright/test';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();

await page.goto('https://example.com/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(process.env.MONITOR_EMAIL!);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(process.env.MONITOR_PASSWORD!);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await page.getByTestId('account-menu').waitFor();

await page.context().storageState({ path: 'playwright/.auth/user.json' });
await browser.close();

Set MONITOR_EMAIL and MONITOR_PASSWORD in your secret manager or environment, not in source code. If the site requires multifactor authentication or interactive approval, arrange an authorized test-account workflow with the site owner. Do not attempt to bypass those controls.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail

The state file may contain session cookies or other credentials capable of impersonating the account. Add playwright/.auth/ to .gitignore, restrict access to the file, and store it as a secret in your monitoring environment. Use an account with only the permissions needed for the check. These precautions follow Playwright’s authentication guidance.

3. Capture the protected page and compare it

Create tests/dashboard.spec.ts. The page-specific assertion prevents an expired session or login redirect from being misreported as a successful capture.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('dashboard matches its approved visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/dashboard');
  await expect(page.getByTestId('dashboard-heading')).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png', {
    fullPage: false,
    animations: 'disabled',
    caret: 'hide',
  });
});

Replace dashboard-heading with a stable marker specific to the signed-in page. Run npx playwright test --update-snapshots once to create the initial reference after checking that it shows the correct account and page. Then run npx playwright test on the schedule you choose. A changed image should prompt review; update the baseline only after confirming the change is intentional. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive captures to match before comparing to the stored expectation, but that does not eliminate noise from changing page content or environment differences.

Choose what part of the page to monitor

  • Viewport screenshot: Use the default viewport capture for a dashboard or page area as users see it without scrolling. Keep viewport dimensions fixed.
  • Element screenshot: Use a locator’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion when only a specific panel or widget matters. This can reduce noise from unrelated page regions.
  • Full-page screenshot: Set fullPage: true when content below the fold is part of the check. Long or dynamically loaded pages may need additional readiness checks so the capture includes the intended content.

Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-page screenshot options in its screenshots guide. Capture the smallest scope that answers the monitoring question, while retaining all content whose changes matter.

Keep captures stable without hiding real regressions

Dynamic data, timestamps, ads, avatars, animations, and caret blinking can trigger differences that are not layout regressions. Disable animation or hide the caret when appropriate, wait for meaningful page content rather than relying only on a fixed delay, and use targeted masking or styling only for areas that are irrelevant to the check. Do not mask the content whose changes you intend to detect. Playwright describes screenshot assertion controls in its snapshot documentation.

Keep baseline approval as a human decision. A visual difference is evidence that pixels changed, not proof that the site is down or broken. Browser, operating-system, and rendering changes can also alter screenshots; Playwright recommends keeping the capture environment consistent in its visual comparison guidance.

Choose where capture and review happen

Approach Strength Considerations
Playwright Test with local baselines Direct control of the authenticated browser context and test environment; comparison runs in the test workflow. Your team maintains the browser job, credentials, baselines, and review process. Host and browser rendering changes can affect diffs. Playwright auth; Playwright snapshots.
BrowserStack Percy Hosted visual review and cross-browser comparison, with visual changes surfaced for approval. Percy documents that it captures DOM state and assets, then re-renders them in Percy infrastructure. Protected assets may require authentication configured for that separate stage. Review the data flow and credential handling before sending protected page state. Percy overview; Percy authentication; Percy cross-browser testing.
Applitools Eyes A visual-testing option with documented Playwright integration. Confirm the authenticated workflow, baseline behavior, current capabilities, and commercial terms for your intended setup. Applitools Playwright documentation; Eyes overview.

Compare options by where authenticated content is rendered, how credentials are handled, browser and operating-system coverage, baseline approval, alert integration, retention, and maintenance. The product documentation linked here does not establish a current pricing comparison.

Decide how the monitor reports failures

The capture and comparison workflow does not prescribe a universal schedule, alert destination, or retention period. Choose them according to the importance of the page and the monitoring system you already operate. Treat authentication failures separately from visual differences: if the signed-in marker is missing, report that the check could not access the protected page rather than accepting a login screen as the new baseline.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The check lands on the login form: The stored session may have expired, the state file may not be available to the job, or the sign-in flow may not have completed. Re-run the authorized setup, confirm the protected-page marker, and refresh the secret state file.
  • The page loads but the assertion times out: The marker may be incorrect or appear only after another application step. Inspect the page and choose a stable selector tied to the authenticated view; wait for meaningful content rather than adding an arbitrary long delay.
  • Screenshots differ on every run: Check viewport and browser consistency, then identify volatile areas such as timestamps, animations, or changing records. Disable animation or mask only irrelevant regions; do not suppress areas whose changes matter.
  • The baseline changes after a browser or host update: Rendering can vary across machines and browser versions. Recreate and review the baseline in the intended monitoring environment rather than automatically approving every change.
  • A hosted visual service cannot load protected assets: The browser that logs in and the service’s rendering stage may be separate. Check the provider’s documented authentication configuration and data flow before exposing cookies, headers, or protected page content.

Or skip the browser setup

For a public page, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. It does not replace the authenticated Playwright flow above for a page that requires your saved login session.
