Use it during redesign releases and continue with a smaller set of checks after launch. A screenshot can reveal visible changes, but it cannot prove that interactions, accessibility, redirects, uptime, or search indexing work.
Choose pages and states that represent the redesign
Start with the pages and user journeys where a visual defect would matter, rather than collecting screenshots indiscriminately. Give each capture a clear purpose so a reviewer can tell what changed and whether it needs action.

- Cover representative templates: for example, a homepage, a category or listing page, a detail page, and a form or checkout page if those templates are part of the site.
- Include high-value pages: select pages that are important to users or business goals, as well as any pages with substantial redesign work.
- Capture meaningful journey states: include relevant states such as an opened navigation menu, validation feedback, or a confirmation view when those are part of the redesign.
- Choose relevant browser and viewport combinations: prioritize those used by your audience and supported by your product. A snapshot configured for one viewport does not establish that the page looks correct at another.

Make each capture repeatable
A visual comparison is useful only when differences are likely to come from the page rather than the capture environment. Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode: Playwright visual comparisons.

Hold the environment steady
- Run the baseline and scheduled checks with the same browser version, operating environment, viewport, and relevant browser settings.
- Use consistent test data and account state, so changing names, prices, or content do not create unrelated visual differences.
- Keep timing consistent. Wait for the page to reach the state you intend to inspect rather than capturing midway through loading or animation.
Control dynamic content deliberately
Clocks, rotating promotions, third-party embeds, and other changing content can produce noisy diffs. Where appropriate, freeze or mock changing inputs, wait for the page to settle, or mask a clearly nonessential region. These are implementation choices for your test; they do not make all page variability disappear automatically. Do not mask an area whose redesign or regression you need to review.
Capture screenshots and compare with an approved baseline
Playwright Test provides await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On the first run, it creates a reference screenshot; subsequent runs compare the new screenshot with that reference. See the Playwright snapshot documentation for the supported workflow.
- Capture the intended state. Navigate to the page, prepare its data and interactions, and wait until it is ready for comparison.
- Run the screenshot assertion. Add
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot()at the point where the page is in the state you want to preserve. - Create or inspect the reference. The initial run establishes the reference image. Later runs compare against it and report a mismatch when the image changes.
- Review the difference. Decide whether it is the intended redesign, an actual visual regression, or capture noise. Inspect the changed region in context instead of treating every changed pixel as a defect.
- Update the baseline only after approval. Playwright supports updating reference screenshots. Do not automatically accept every changed image: a baseline is an approved expectation, not a record of whatever happened to render most recently.
Keep baseline changes reviewable alongside the code or release change they represent. If the visual change is intentional, the new reference should make that decision explicit; if it is not, fix the page or stabilize the capture before updating it.

Schedule checks during and after the redesign
Run the same browser test through a regular CI schedule or another scheduler that can reach the target environment. During the redesign, also run it against release candidates or deployment previews so visible problems can be caught before launch. After launch, retain a smaller recurring suite for the most important public pages and journeys.

There is no universal schedule that fits every site. Set frequency according to how often the site changes, the risk and impact of a missed defect, and the cost of running and reviewing the checks. Ensure scheduled runs use the same capture conditions as the approved baseline; otherwise, a change in the test environment can look like a site change.
Choose local Playwright snapshots or hosted visual review
Native Playwright snapshots keep the screenshot-testing workflow in the project and support updating references. Hosted services can add centralized comparison review and baseline management. Choose the approach that fits how your team stores code, runs CI, reviews changes, and investigates failures. A hosted review layer does not remove the need for stable captures or a human decision about whether a difference is acceptable.
Keep visual checks separate from launch QA
A matching screenshot is evidence about appearance at a particular state and capture configuration. It is not proof that a page is available continuously, that a button or form works, that the site is accessible, or that search engines can reach and index the intended URLs. Pair visual comparisons with interaction and accessibility tests, and use uptime or error monitoring if around-the-clock availability matters. For a redesign that changes URLs, separately verify the URL mapping, redirects, and search-console signals.
Handle changed URLs as a site migration
If the redesign changes page URLs, prepare a mapping from current URLs to their new destinations, configure and thoroughly test redirects, and monitor user and crawler traffic on both old and new URLs. Google’s migration guidance recommends these steps and notes that ranking fluctuations may occur while Google recrawls and reindexes the site: Move a site with URL changes.
The Search Console Change of Address tool is for moves between domains or subdomains, not ordinary path changes or HTTP-to-HTTPS changes. Google’s help guidance says to maintain redirects for at least 180 days: Change of Address tool. A redesign that keeps its URLs does not become a domain move simply because the pages look different. In either case, verify URL and indexing behavior separately from the screenshot suite.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
Many pages fail after a browser or runner update
Likely cause: a changed browser version, operating environment, rendering mode, or other capture condition. Fix: compare the run environment with the baseline environment, restore consistency where possible, and review whether the change is genuinely expected before updating references.

The diff changes on every scheduled run
Likely cause: variable data, timing, clocks, promotions, animations, or third-party content. Fix: make inputs deterministic, wait for the intended page state, and mask only regions that are both nonessential and outside the check’s purpose.
A large baseline update appears after the redesign
Likely cause: the expected design changed, or the test captured a different state or viewport. Fix: verify the test configuration and inspect the affected pages before accepting references. If the redesign is intentional, approve the new baseline; otherwise, address the defect or capture inconsistency.
A screenshot passes but users still report a broken page
Likely cause: a visual check does not exercise every interaction or establish availability, accessibility, redirect correctness, or indexing. Fix: add the appropriate functional, accessibility, uptime, redirect, or search-console check rather than expanding the screenshot assertion to imply guarantees it cannot provide.
