How to Monitor a Website for Visual Changes on Mobile and Desktop

Monitor a website’s visual changes by capturing the pages and interaction states that matter at selected mobile and desktop viewport sizes, then comparing each capture with an approved baseline. Playwright Test provides screenshot comparisons in your test suite; Chromatic and Percy offer hosted visual-review workflows. A screenshot at one width does not test the others, and any difference should be reviewed before the baseline is changed.

Choose what to monitor

Start with a small set of pages and visible states that would matter to users if they changed. Depending on the site, that might include a landing page, an open navigation menu, a product detail page, or a checkout step. Monitoring fewer, useful cases is easier to maintain than taking screenshots of every route without a clear purpose.

Decide which viewports to capture based on the responsive layouts and breakpoints your site actually uses. A narrow mobile viewport and a desktop viewport are a practical starting point, but the exact dimensions are site-specific. Add widths where the layout changes or where your users need coverage; do not assume one mobile screenshot represents every phone-sized layout.

Choose a visual-testing workflow

All three approaches below compare rendered screenshots, but differ in where capture and review happen. The choice depends on whether you prefer project-managed references or a hosted review workflow; the cited documentation does not establish one as universally best.

Set up Playwright screenshot comparisons

In Playwright Test, write tests for the pages or states you selected and use toHaveScreenshot() to compare a new capture with its reference. Configure each intended viewport as a test input; the test must actually run at every width you want to monitor.

  1. Choose representative page-state pairs. Include only stable, meaningful states, such as a page after its primary content has loaded or a menu after it has been opened.
  2. Configure your target viewports. Set the dimensions in the relevant browser project or test, or use a device preset where appropriate. Keep the same viewport inputs on baseline and comparison runs.
  3. Create the baseline. Run the tests to generate reference screenshots. Review these references to confirm that they show the intended content and state.
  4. Run comparisons in development or CI. Inspect reported differences when a later capture does not match its reference.
  5. Update references only for intentional changes. After reviewing the visual change, use Playwright’s update-snapshots option to refresh the reference when appropriate. Do not automatically accept every new rendering as correct.

For exact API and command details, use the current Playwright screenshot comparison documentation. Its comparison guidance also cautions that screenshots can differ with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline creation and comparisons in a consistent environment to reduce unrelated differences.

Set up responsive widths in hosted workflows

Chromatic

Chromatic documents viewport configuration globally or at test level for Playwright, as well as in other supported integrations. Define the widths you need to monitor and ensure the capture workflow exercises them. Its configured smaller viewports are viewport tests, not tests on physical iOS or Android devices, according to its mobile testing FAQ.

Percy

Provide the responsive breakpoint widths for the snapshots you want to compare, then review the resulting build in Percy. Plan usage around the documented rule that each responsive width counts as a separate screenshot toward monthly screenshot usage. See Percy’s responsive testing documentation for its workflow.

Make captures repeatable

A visual comparison is useful only if the capture conditions are sufficiently consistent. Keep the browser and operating-system environment stable between creating a baseline and comparing against it. Also make sure each test reaches the same page state before capture: a menu should be consistently open or closed, and the expected content should be present.

  • Run the same selected pages and states on every relevant comparison run.
  • Use the same viewport dimensions for each corresponding baseline and new capture.
  • Keep the browser version, operating system, settings, and execution mode consistent where practical; Playwright identifies these and other host conditions as possible sources of screenshot variation.
  • Review each visual change before updating its baseline. A difference is a signal to inspect, not proof that the site is broken or that the change is intended.

Emulated mobile width is not physical-device testing

A browser configured to a narrow viewport checks how a page renders at that size in the configured browser environment. It does not establish how the page behaves on a physical phone. Playwright provides device parameter presets for emulation, while Chromatic’s FAQ explicitly distinguishes its smaller viewport tests from iOS and Android mobile testing. If your goal includes device-specific behavior, treat physical-device testing as a separate requirement rather than inferring it from a viewport screenshot.

For a single capture without configuring browser automation, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. You can set viewport dimensions for mobile or desktop captures. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common problems and fixes

Every run reports visual differences

Check whether the baseline and comparison ran with different operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, or headless mode. These conditions can affect rendered screenshots. Standardize the environment, then review the remaining differences rather than replacing references without inspection.

A mobile layout change is missing

Confirm that the test actually captures the width where the responsive behavior changes. Viewports are configured inputs: a capture at one width does not cover another. Add the relevant width to the Playwright project or test, Chromatic viewport configuration, or Percy responsive widths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A small viewport is being treated as a real-phone test

Clarify the test goal. A smaller browser viewport is useful for checking responsive layout, but it is not evidence of behavior on a physical iOS or Android device. Use a separate device-testing workflow if physical-device behavior is in scope.

A baseline was updated but the visual change is wrong

Restore or recreate the approved reference and rerun the comparison after checking the page state and viewport. Baseline updates should follow review of the change; automatic acceptance can hide an unintended regression.

Hosted screenshot usage is higher than expected

For Percy, count each configured responsive width as a separate screenshot under its documented usage model. Choose widths that exercise meaningful layouts rather than adding redundant captures.

Cost and performance considerations

The cited product documentation establishes workflow details, but does not provide a basis here for comparing current prices, relative performance, or defect-reduction rates. For a hosted workflow, check the provider’s current terms and usage model before adopting it. For Percy specifically, include each responsive width in your screenshot-usage estimate.

For reliability, prioritize stable capture conditions and deliberate review over increasing the number of screenshots indiscriminately. A maintained set of meaningful pages, states, and widths is easier to interpret than a large set of noisy comparisons.
