How to Monitor a Hindi Devotional YouTube Stream for FFmpeg Crashes on Linux

Monitor a Hindi devotional YouTube stream on two separate levels: check that FFmpeg is alive and making progress on Linux, and check that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed in Live Control Room. A running process is not proof of a working stream. Use FFmpeg’s logs and exit status, a process supervisor’s restart records, and YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages together.

What to monitor: the encoder and the YouTube feed

For a continuous bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, or other Hindi devotional stream, there are two distinct failure questions:

  • Is FFmpeg running and progressing? Linux can report whether the process exists, whether it has exited, its exit status, and what its logs say. A PID check alone cannot establish that the input is advancing or output is being sent.
  • Is YouTube receiving an acceptable stream? YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the feed sent to YouTube and display health errors. YouTube says errors include timestamps; red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. Read YouTube’s live-stream error guide.

These checks complement one another. FFmpeg can remain alive while its input or output is stalled, and YouTube can report a degraded or rejected feed even while the encoder process continues.

Build a monitoring plan for Linux

1. Run FFmpeg under process supervision

Use a Linux process supervisor so an unexpected FFmpeg exit can be recorded and handled according to a restart policy, rather than relying on an interactive terminal. Test the service on the Linux distribution and FFmpeg build you actually use. A user-posted systemd example is illustrative, not a universal unit-file recipe: FFmpeg user mailing-list example.

For a background FFmpeg invocation, the FFmpeg FAQ recommends using -nostdin or redirecting standard input from /dev/null on Linux or macOS. This prevents FFmpeg from consulting console input and potentially suspending a background job. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

2. Record exits, restarts, and logs

Capture FFmpeg’s logs and the service manager’s restart records, including the process exit status. When FFmpeg exits nonzero or the supervisor records a restart, inspect the logs to classify the failure and confirm that the intended restart behavior occurred. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes error handling options including -xerror, which makes FFmpeg stop and exit on an error.

3. Check progress, not just process existence

Add a liveness or progress check appropriate to the command and outputs you configured. If FFmpeg remains running but output or progress becomes stale, a blocked input or output is possible. There is no universal stall threshold: choose and test one for the specific stream design, then compare the result with YouTube’s ingest status.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

-max_error_rate is not a substitute for a crash detector. It is a decoding-error threshold that changes the return code when crossed; it does not terminate processing simply because the threshold has been crossed. Do not expect it by itself to make a still-running encoder exit. The distinction is documented in the FFmpeg command-line reference.

4. Use reconnect options only where they apply

For an HTTP input, FFmpeg provides protocol-specific reconnect controls, including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed, along with retry and delay limits. Check the documentation for the installed version and confirm the actual input protocol and option placement before using them. These options do not apply generically to every source, and retries do not guarantee recovery from every failure. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Input reconnect behavior is not the same as YouTube recovering an ingest stream. Keep the process-supervisor and YouTube-health checks even when reconnect options are configured.

Validate the devotional stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Test representative content. Use audio and visual movement similar to the actual devotional stream, rather than validating only a silent or static test clip.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and accessibility. Confirm the feed appears as expected and that it is accessible to the intended audience.
  3. Review stream health. Open YouTube Live Control Room and read any health messages and timestamps. Follow the corrective guidance for the specific error. YouTube explains live-stream error messages.
  4. Watch for local progress where applicable. If FFmpeg is also producing a local archive, check that the file continues to grow. YouTube includes this among its stream-validation tips.
  5. Keep monitoring audio and video quality. During the event, check both the feed’s quality and YouTube’s health status; a successful process start is not a substitute for ongoing observation.

For platform guidance on testing and ongoing checks, see YouTube’s live-streaming tips and YouTube’s encoder settings.

Read the signal and choose the next check

Signal What it indicates What to do
FFmpeg exits nonzero or the supervisor records a restart The encoder process stopped or failed. Inspect the logs and exit status, identify the cause, and verify restart behavior with a controlled test. Consider whether -xerror is appropriate for the intended error policy.
FFmpeg remains running but output or progress is stale A stalled or blocked input/output is possible; the process may still exist without making useful progress. Use a command-appropriate progress or output check, then compare it with YouTube’s ingest status. Set a tested threshold for this stream rather than assuming one universal value.
Live Control Room shows a stream-health error YouTube has detected an issue in the feed it receives. Read the timestamped details and apply the corrective guidance for that error. YouTube categorizes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate.
A local archive stops growing, if recording is enabled The local output may have stopped progressing. Check FFmpeg logs and output health, then compare with the YouTube feed. Archive growth is one of YouTube’s recommended validation checks.

Investigate YouTube format errors carefully

If YouTube reports an incorrect-stream-format error, its error guidance mentions H.264 video and AAC audio. Treat those formats as relevant to that specific error, not as a blanket diagnosis for every stream-health problem. Check the current ingest guidance against your actual stream configuration and the error YouTube displays: YouTube live-stream error messages.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on prerecorded devotional stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud loops it, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

StreamNeo’s monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is an alternative for uploaded-video streams, not a way to go live from a camera or a replacement for diagnosing an FFmpeg setup. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
