Each check sees a different part of the chain. Then periodically listen to the public playback, because a detector can report only what reaches its own input.
Why a live stream can still be silent
A stream can be active at YouTube while the programme audio is too low or absent. Conversely, YouTube can report an ingest or configuration problem even when the audio source itself is working. Treat these as separate signals rather than relying on one green status indicator.

- Ingest health reports whether YouTube is receiving stream data and whether it identifies delivery or configuration issues.
- Audio-level monitoring measures the signal at a chosen point and alerts when it stays below a chosen threshold for a set duration.
- Public playback checks provide a separate observation of what is reaching the viewer-facing stream; they do not prove that every viewer or device hears correctly.
Set up the monitoring layers
1. Watch YouTube’s stream health
During a broadcast, check the stream health indicator and error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s documentation describes errors for the stream sent to YouTube, including format and audio-codec problems, and notes that error messages can include timestamps and may remain until the issue is fixed: YouTube stream health and errors.
If your team maintains API-based monitoring, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health status. An active status means YouTube is receiving stream data; health values include good, ok, bad, and noData. Configuration issues can give more detail, including audio-related problems such as a missing audio stream, unsupported codec, sample-rate issue, or bitrate issue. These checks concern delivery and configuration at YouTube’s ingest point. They are not a substitute for measuring whether the programme audio is actually audible.
2. Measure the programme audio
Put a silence detector as close as practical to the signal being encoded or fed to the encoder. The closer the measurement is to the outgoing programme feed, the more of the production path it observes; a mixer-output check, for example, will not detect a fault introduced later between that output and the encoder.

FFmpeg’s silencedetect filter logs when audio stays at or below a configured noise tolerance for at least a configured duration. Its documented example, silencedetect=n=-50dB:d=5, detects five seconds at a -50 dB tolerance. That is an example, not a recommended universal setting for worship services: quiet prayer, pauses, speech, music, and ambient sound have different levels. 3. Tune the threshold to the programme
- Collect or listen to representative audio from the actual service, including the quietest intentional sections as well as ordinary speech and music.
- Choose a level threshold low enough to tolerate expected quiet content but high enough to identify the fault you want to catch.
- Choose a minimum duration that avoids alarms for normal pauses while still giving staff time to respond.
- Run the detector against representative material and adjust the threshold and duration until intentional quiet does not trigger an alarm and sustained silence does.
A silence alarm means only that the signal at the detector’s input remained below its threshold for its configured interval. It does not identify whether the cause is a muted mixer, a failed source, routing, or another fault.

4. Route alerts to a person who can act
Send detector events and YouTube health events to a destination that someone monitors, and assign responsibility for responding. The cited documentation describes detection and status concepts, but does not establish a particular email, SMS, paging, or chat integration. Confirm that your chosen implementation delivers alerts, and rehearse who checks the stream and audio path when one arrives.
5. Check the public stream separately
Periodically listen to the public YouTube playback from a separate device or connection. This can reveal issues beyond the detector’s measurement point. An encoder-side meter or silence detector cannot establish what every viewer hears, and the documentation cited here does not establish a YouTube-native automatic detector that confirms audible programme content for every viewer.

Protect the stream connection
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder as directed by YouTube, and treat the stream key as a private operational credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. If you change or reset a key, update the encoder configuration and verify that the next stream connects.

Choose monitoring that covers your installation
- Measurement point: identify whether the monitor reads the mixer output, encoder input, outgoing encoded feed, or public playback. Each sees a different section of the signal path.
- Detection controls: confirm that the detector supports an appropriate level threshold and silence duration, and can tolerate the service’s intentional quiet passages.
- Failure coverage: combine ingest-health and audio-level checks; neither alone covers every failure mode.
- Alert and response: verify the actual notification route and make clear who is expected to respond.
- Operational fit: consider whether the monitor can run continuously and be maintained by the staff and equipment available at the church.

Does an active YouTube stream mean the audio is audible?
No. Active status indicates YouTube is receiving stream data, not that programme audio is at an acceptable level.
Can a silence detector identify what caused the audio to drop?
No. It reports the level at its input against a threshold and duration; diagnosis requires checking the audio path.
