You can check a running YouTube stream remotely in the YouTube Studio app for Android, which displays live stream metrics. For automated checks, a developer can query the YouTube Live Streaming API for incoming-stream status and health. YouTube’s documented tools provide status and diagnostic information; the official pages cited here do not establish configurable push or email alerts when an encoder stops sending data.
Choose what you need to monitor
“Is the encoder still sending data?” and “Can viewers watch the stream?” are different questions. YouTube’s ingest status and health fields help answer the first. A separate check of public playback can help answer the second, but a watch page being reachable does not by itself prove that the encoder feed is healthy or that playback is moving.

- Remote human check: Open YouTube Studio on a compatible Android phone and inspect live stream metrics. This is a practical way to check in periodically, not evidence that every desktop Live Control Room feature is available on mobile.
- Automated ingest check: A custom application can query the YouTube Live Streaming API and inspect stream status and health. This requires implementation and maintenance; the API is not a ready-made alert service.
- Viewer playback check: If the concern is what the audience sees, check the public playback separately. The cited YouTube documentation does not prescribe a particular third-party playback monitor.
Check stream health from an Android phone
- Open YouTube Studio on Android. Sign in to the account that manages the channel.
- Find the live stream and review its metrics. YouTube documents live stream metrics in the Android Studio app. Use them to check whether the stream appears to be operating as expected.
- For more detail, use Live Control Room when available. YouTube’s Live Control Room shows stream status and specific error information while a stream is running. If you cannot see the detail you need in the app, check from a browser or computer when possible.
- Check at intervals that suit your risk. A phone dashboard helps when you look at it; it does not, by itself, mean an interruption will generate an alert.

Build an automated ingest check with the API
For a technical operator, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes a liveStream resource with status and health information. The API documentation defines active as the user receiving data via the stream. That describes incoming data, not a guarantee that viewers can see healthy playback.

Interpret the status values
The resource’s status.streamStatus can be active, created, error, inactive, or ready. YouTube defines inactive as not receiving data. A checker should treat these as distinct states rather than reducing them all to a simple online/offline signal.
Inspect health details as well
The status.healthStatus.status field can be good, ok, bad, or noData. The resource also supplies a health update timestamp and configuration issue details. Health information can identify problems such as insufficient video output or unsupported configuration, so inspecting the details can be more useful than checking status alone.

- Authenticate and request the relevant live stream resource. Follow the API’s documented workflow and ensure the checker has credentials with the permissions needed for the channel.
- Read both status and health fields. Record
streamStatus,healthStatus.status, the health update timestamp, and any configuration issue details. - Define your own alert conditions. For example, decide how your system should respond to a non-active status or a health value that needs attention. The API supplies data; your application must implement polling, alert delivery, and recovery behavior.
- Monitor the checker too. An alerting system can fail if its host, network, credentials, or notification channel fails. Plan how you will detect those failures and verify that alerts are being delivered.

YouTube’s API overview distinguishes the private monitor stream, used by the broadcaster to preview or test content, from the broadcast stream visible to the audience. A preview can help inspect content, but the cited documentation does not describe it as an unattended off-site uptime monitor or notification service.

Does YouTube send an email or phone alert if the feed stops?
The official YouTube documentation cited here describes dashboards and API status/health data, but does not establish configurable push or email alerts specifically for an encoder interruption. Do not rely on such an alert unless you verify that the feature is available for your account and setup. A custom API checker can send notifications only after you build or configure an alerting layer around the API data.
Third-party monitoring: what to verify
A Grafana community dashboard listing describes tracking YouTube stream status and outages with Prometheus and a YouTube exporter. This is a community implementation, not an official YouTube feature. Before depending on a similar setup, verify its current compatibility, what signal it checks, how it delivers alerts, and who maintains the host and credentials. A status tracker is not automatically a phone alert or a viewer-playback monitor.
