You can watch a YouTube livestream on a phone or tablet away from your computer, but a second screen is not a supervision plan. For a child’s 24/7 stream, arrange for a responsible adult to be nearby or aware throughout, able to respond and end the broadcast. If you cannot maintain adult coverage, reconsider running the stream.
What remote monitoring can—and cannot—do
YouTube supports watching livestreams on mobile devices, so you can open the official stream link on a phone or tablet and see the feed away from the computer. That gives you a way to view the video; it does not establish that you will receive alerts, detect a problem, or be able to intervene promptly.
YouTube’s safety guidance says, “Always have an adult nearby or aware.” For a stream that runs around the clock, translate that guidance into a real coverage plan: name the responsible adult for each period, make sure they know how to contact one another, and decide who can stop the broadcast. These handoffs are practical planning, not a YouTube monitoring feature.
Check YouTube’s age and account rules first
YouTube’s Get started with live streaming guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16. Its Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming guidance says streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled or access to other features restricted. If a minor participates on an adult-owned account, YouTube says an adult must be visibly present.

Rules and features can change. Check YouTube’s current guidance and account requirements before setup, rather than assuming that a remote adult watching on a device satisfies the visibly-present requirement.
Set up a responsible viewing and response plan
- Open the official stream link on a phone or tablet. Confirm that the live feed plays when you are away from the computer. Treat this as a viewing check only; do not count on an unverified alert or notification.
- Name the adult responsible at every hour. For overnight or continuous coverage, write down who is on duty and when responsibility changes. Make sure each person knows how to reach the next adult.
- Agree on how to stop the stream. Identify who has access to end the broadcast and how another responsible adult can contact them if needed.
- Review the frame and spoken content for identifying details. YouTube advises against sharing a child’s name, age, home address, school, or phone number. Check the background for house numbers, street signs, or other clues to location.
- Review privacy, embedding, audience, and chat settings. Choose settings deliberately with a trusted adult before going live. Do not assume a setting makes the stream safe to leave without supervision.
- Decide who handles chat, if chat is available and appropriate. YouTube suggests designating a trusted adult moderator to help filter unwanted chats. Its Made for Kids setting disables live chat and live chat replay, which changes how viewers can interact.
Understand the added risk of live content
Unlike a recording that can be reviewed before publication, a live broadcast happens in real time. UK government guidance notes that live streams are harder to monitor for that reason, and Ofcom identifies the real-time nature of livestreaming as a risk factor. Ofcom’s 2026 audit also found that safety tools could be skipped during setup. These findings support treating setup checks and adult coverage as separate safeguards, not substitutes for one another.
