How to Monetize an Android App with InMobi or Other Ad Networks

The most reliable way to monetize an Android app with InMobi is to use a mediation platform as your control layer, then let InMobi and other demand sources compete for each impression. A direct InMobi SDK integration can work for a simple app, but mediation usually gives you more fill, pricing competition and reporting with one ad-management workflow.

Start with a small number of carefully placed formats, obtain consent where required, test with test ads, and judge performance by impression-level revenue, eCPM, fill rate, latency, retention and lifetime value. There is no universally highest-paying format or network: geography, audience, consent status, placement quality and session context determine the result.

Choose the monetization architecture first

Your architecture determines how many demand sources can bid for an impression, how much operational work you carry and how quickly you can compare results.

Direct InMobi SDK integration

A direct integration connects your app to InMobi as a single demand source. You add the InMobi Android SDK, create placements in your InMobi account and request ads from those placements. This is the simplest route when you are validating one network, need only a few formats or want the smallest possible mediation configuration.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

The trade-off is that an unfilled or low-priced InMobi request has no automatic second source unless you build a separate fallback. You also have less evidence about whether another network would have paid more for the same impression.

Mediation with a waterfall

Mediation receives an ad request, orders eligible sources by expected yield and calls them in sequence. If the first source does not return a usable ad, the next source receives the opportunity. You configure InMobi as one or more instances with price floors or historical rankings, alongside other networks.

Waterfalls are understandable and can be useful while you are learning your traffic, but floors set too high can reduce fill. Allow enough impressions to accumulate before changing a ranking or floor; a few hours of data is not a reliable basis for a pricing decision.

Mediation with bidding

In a bidding setup, participating sources submit a price for the impression and the mediation platform selects the eligible winner. This can reduce manual ordering and let more buyers compete at once. Availability depends on the mediation platform, country, format and the network’s current adapter support.

InMobi documents integrations with Google AdMob, AppLovin MAX, Unity LevelPlay and Fyber. It also lists Amazon Publisher Services TAM and Prebid as audience-bidding options. Confirm that the particular format and Android SDK versions you plan to use are supported before committing to an architecture.

Architecture What happens to an ad request Advantages Limitations Best fit
Direct InMobi Your app requests an ad from InMobi only. Fewest moving parts; fast initial setup. No automatic competition or fallback; narrower reporting. A prototype, a small app or a controlled single-source test.
Mediation waterfall Sources are called in configured order until one fills the request. Transparent ordering and broad network coverage. Requires floor and ranking maintenance; poor settings can lower fill. Teams that want explicit control while building a traffic baseline.
Mediation bidding Eligible sources submit prices and the platform selects a winner. More simultaneous price competition and less manual ordering. Requires compatible adapters, accounts and format support. Apps with enough volume to compare several demand sources.

Set up accounts, apps and placements

  1. Open and verify the required accounts. For an AdMob mediation deployment, keep an active AdMob account and create or select the Android app there. Create an InMobi account, complete the required InMobi agreement and make the app available for review if requested.
  2. Create one placement per meaningful inventory location. Record the InMobi account identifier and each placement ID. Separate placements by format and user journey rather than putting every request into one generic placement. A rewarded placement, a post-level interstitial and a home-screen banner have different user intent and should be measured separately.
  3. Map the app consistently. The package name, app store listing and app identifiers must match across the mediation platform, InMobi and any other network. A mismatch can produce no-fill responses even when the SDK is initialized correctly.
  4. Decide which formats you will launch first. Begin with the inventory that fits an existing user action. Adding every format at once makes it difficult to tell whether a revenue change came from demand, placement or a disruptive user experience.

Add the Android SDK and mediation adapters

Import the current InMobi Android SDK and the adapter for your chosen mediation platform by following the official integration instructions for the release you are publishing. Dependency names, minimum Android versions, initialization APIs and adapter requirements change, so copy versions from the current documentation rather than from an old tutorial or cached build file.

Build and initialization checks

  • Use the package and dependency versions required by the current adapter.
  • Initialize the Google Mobile Ads SDK or your selected mediation SDK once, at application startup or the documented lifecycle point.
  • Initialize InMobi through the mediation adapter when mediation controls the integration; do not create a second, conflicting initialization path unless the adapter documentation explicitly requires it.
  • Keep banner, interstitial, native and rewarded implementations separate so that a change to one format does not silently alter another.
  • Test release-like builds, not only a debug build. Proguard, app signing, network security settings and lifecycle differences can affect ad loading.

Do not hard-code assumptions about a particular adapter version. Before each release, review the SDK’s Android requirements, initialization guidance, supported formats and known breaking changes.

Configure InMobi in mediation

  1. Add InMobi as a demand source. In your mediation dashboard, choose either the InMobi bidding option or a waterfall network instance, according to the integration you selected.
  2. Enter the identifiers. Map the Android app, InMobi account information and the placement ID for the exact format. A banner placement cannot be substituted for a rewarded placement.
  3. Repeat the mapping by format. Configure each banner, interstitial, native and rewarded ad unit independently. Keep names descriptive enough to identify the screen and event, such as a post-level interstitial or an opt-in reward.
  4. Set a cautious floor in a waterfall. A floor is a minimum price, not a guarantee. Start conservatively, watch fill and latency, then adjust after the source has generated enough impressions in each important country.
  5. Enable bidding only where supported. Verify that the Android adapter, the mediation SDK and the selected InMobi format all support bidding in your account’s region. If not, use a waterfall instance or another supported path.
  6. Publish and verify the configuration. Confirm that the mediation status is active, the app and placement IDs are correct and the ad unit is linked to the intended mediation group.

Mediation improves the opportunity for competition; it does not guarantee higher earnings. A source can have a high reported eCPM but little fill, or a lower eCPM with dependable volume. Evaluate the combination.

Choose formats around the user journey

Format Good placement pattern Primary value Main risks Measure
Banner A stable area of a screen where content will not jump as the ad loads. Persistent, relatively low-friction inventory. Screen crowding, accidental clicks and reduced usable content area. Viewability, fill, eCPM, accidental-click signals and retention.
Interstitial A natural transition, such as between completed activities or screens. Full-screen attention and generally more valuable transition inventory. Interrupting a task, delaying the next action or increasing abandonment. Completion, dismiss rate, latency, session continuation and retention.
Native A clearly separated slot within a content feed or list. Flexible presentation that can match the surrounding layout. Insufficient disclosure or a layout that makes an ad look like editorial content. Viewability, engagement, disclosure usability and downstream retention.
Rewarded An explicit opt-in before a user receives an in-app benefit. High user intent when the reward is understandable and optional. Unclear rewards, forced viewing or granting the benefit before a completed view. Opt-in rate, completion rate, reward cost, retention and lifetime value.
Rewarded interstitial or app-open variant Only at a documented, context-appropriate interruption point. Additional inventory where the mediation and network support it. Unexpected interruption and format-policy violations. Completion, frequency, latency and cohort retention.

Banners

Reserve a predictable area and account for the ad’s loaded height so the interface does not shift. Avoid placing a banner next to controls that users tap frequently. Monitor accidental clicks and remove the placement if monetization is coming from mis-taps rather than deliberate interest.

Interstitials

Load an interstitial before the transition at which you may show it, then present it only after the user has completed the current action. Do not cover a form, a live interaction or an immediately needed confirmation. Frequency should follow the app’s pacing; a technically successful interstitial can still damage retention if it appears at every navigation event.

Native ads

Keep the ad container visually distinct and include the disclosure required by the network and applicable policy. Make sure the headline, media and call-to-action fit your layout at different screen sizes. Treat native as a design and accessibility task, not only an SDK task.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Rewarded ads

Explain the reward before the user opts in, show progress or completion status, and grant the benefit only according to the network’s completion callback and your own server-side rules where applicable. The reward should be useful but not so essential that the app becomes coercive.

Handle consent, identity and publisher files before launch

EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland

For traffic from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, provide the disclosures and consent flow required by Google’s EU User Consent Policy and by the networks you use. The consent state must be available to the SDKs before an ad request that depends on personalized advertising. Design the flow for a first launch and for later changes in the user’s privacy choice.

Android Advertising ID

If the app targets Android 13 or higher and uses the Android Advertising ID (AAID), declare the AD_ID permission as required by Android and the advertising SDK. Requesting a permission you do not use, or omitting one the SDK requires, can create compliance and serving problems. Check the current Android and SDK documentation for the exact manifest and behavior requirements.

app-ads.txt

Maintain an accurate app-ads.txt file for the app’s publisher domain using the seller records supplied by your demand partners. Google states that publishers need this file to avoid a significant loss of ad revenue. Update it when you add, remove or change a network, and verify that the published file is reachable and contains the current entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Children and sensitive audiences

Apply the children’s privacy requirements, age signals and network controls that fit your audience and distribution regions. Do not assume that mediation transfers responsibility to the platform: you remain responsible for the app’s audience classification, disclosures, consent choices and compliance with each network agreement.

Test without risking the account

  1. Use test ads and test devices. Enable the test-device controls supplied by Google and the relevant network, or use documented test placements. Confirm that the ad is labeled as a test before interacting with it.
  2. Exercise every format and lifecycle path. Test cold start, background and resume, rotation where supported, loss of connectivity, slow connectivity, ad dismissal and a second request after an impression.
  3. Verify callbacks. Confirm that load success, load failure, impression, click, close, reward and revenue callbacks arrive once and are associated with the correct placement.
  4. Test consent variants. Run a consented, declined and not-yet-determined state where your policy implementation permits it. Ensure the app does not request personalized ads before the required choice.
  5. Remove test configuration before release. Keep a release checklist that catches test device IDs, test ad-unit IDs and debug logging before publishing.

Never click live ads, ask users to click them, refresh pages to create artificial impressions or otherwise inflate activity. Google policy allows it to disable ad serving or close accounts for invalid activity, and mediation does not shield you from that enforcement.

Measure revenue by impression and cohort

Capture impression-level revenue when the mediation platform and network provide it. Store the amount, currency, precision and the placement or ad-unit identifier alongside the country, format, consent state and app version. This lets you compare sources without confusing an estimated value with a finalized payment.

Core calculations

  • eCPM: revenue divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000. Always state the currency, geography, format and measurement window.
  • Fill rate: filled ad responses divided by eligible ad requests, multiplied by 100. Define whether the denominator includes requests rejected before reaching mediation.
  • Show rate: impressions divided by successful loads, multiplied by 100. A load that is never shown can create a misleadingly good eCPM if you only inspect served impressions.
  • Rewarded completion rate: completed views divided by started or shown rewarded ads, using one consistent definition.
  • Revenue per daily active user: ad revenue divided by the relevant active-user cohort. This helps compare a high-eCPM format that appears rarely with a lower-eCPM format that appears reliably.

Allow the data to stabilize

Google says a newly added optimized ad-source instance may take up to five days to generate enough data for accurate eCPM calculations. That is a data-availability statement, not a revenue guarantee. Avoid judging a new InMobi instance from its first day, especially when traffic is low or concentrated in one country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use cohorts, not just dashboard totals

Compare users who entered during the same period and track day-one, day-seven and later retention, sessions, ad opportunities, revenue and lifetime value. Break results down by country, format, placement, app version, consent state and user segment. A network that wins on one geography may lose on another, and a format that raises session revenue may lower the number of sessions a user returns for.

Increase eCPM and fill without sacrificing retention

Improve the opportunity before changing the floor

  • Fix requests that are sent before SDK initialization or after an activity has been destroyed.
  • Preload an interstitial or rewarded ad at a safe point so a completed action is not held up by a network timeout.
  • Use sensible timeouts and stop retry loops that repeatedly request an unavailable ad.
  • Separate placements so buyers can price a known context instead of an undifferentiated stream of requests.

Expand competition carefully

Add a compatible demand source through bidding or a waterfall instance, then compare it under the same placement, country mix, consent state and test window. Changing several networks and the placement design at the same time prevents a meaningful attribution of the result.

Protect the user experience

  • Place interstitials only at natural breaks and cap frequency where repeated interruptions harm completion.
  • Keep rewarded ads voluntary and make the benefit clear before the view begins.
  • Do not hide or disguise native disclosures.
  • Use a banner size and position that do not cover controls or cause layout movement.
  • Monitor latency; an ad that eventually pays but makes a user abandon a screen can reduce lifetime value.

Run controlled experiments

Change one major variable at a time: network mix, floor, placement timing, frequency, creative treatment or preload behavior. Hold the app version and audience definition steady, assign users consistently, and use enough impressions to cover day-to-day volatility. Keep a rollback configuration for any experiment that increases crashes, latency or negative retention signals.

How InMobi compares with common alternatives

InMobi is a credible demand source when its Android SDK, adapter and account requirements fit your app. AdMob is a practical baseline because it provides the Google Mobile Ads SDK, mediation controls, policy documentation and impression-level revenue reporting. AppLovin MAX and Unity LevelPlay are alternative mediation platforms to investigate, particularly when their integrations and operational tools match your app’s format mix. The correct comparison is measured performance under identical conditions, not a headline eCPM claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Role in an Android setup What to verify When it may fit
InMobi Demand source with direct Android integration and mediation integrations. Account approval, placement mapping, supported formats, adapter version and bidding availability. When its demand performs well for your audience or complements other sources.
Google AdMob Mediation and ad-serving control layer with Google Mobile Ads SDK. Policy status, mediation configuration, reporting definitions and consent implementation. As a broad baseline for an app that wants one central workflow.
AppLovin MAX Alternative mediation platform listed by InMobi as an integration. Adapter support, bidding or waterfall capabilities for each format and region. When its mediation operations fit your team and traffic.
Unity LevelPlay Alternative mediation platform listed by InMobi as an integration. Current Android adapter, supported demand sources and reporting behavior. When its tools and network mix suit the app, including games.
Fyber Mediation integration listed in InMobi’s documentation. Current integration status, account requirements and format coverage. When its available demand is material for your target markets.

Do not interpret this table as a promise that one platform will win. Run the same placement and audience through each candidate, retain the same consent and frequency rules, and compare total value rather than eCPM alone.

Troubleshoot the problems that most often reduce revenue

Symptom Likely checks Safe corrective action
No ad loads after integration App and placement IDs, adapter compatibility, SDK initialization order, account approval and network connectivity. Use a documented test placement, inspect adapter logs in a test build and confirm the mediation mapping before changing floors.
High requests but low fill Country demand, consent state, unsupported format, aggressive floor, request timing and timeout. Lower or remove the floor temporarily, add a compatible source, and compare fill by country and format.
Good eCPM but little revenue Low impression volume, low show rate, narrow geography or a dashboard using different precision rules. Inspect impression count, show rate and impression-level values; do not scale a result based on eCPM alone.
Users abandon after ads appear Interstitial timing, frequency, latency, accidental banner taps or an unclear reward. Move the ad to a natural break, reduce frequency, improve preload behavior or remove the disruptive placement.
Revenue differs between dashboards Timezone, currency conversion, estimated versus finalized revenue, attribution window and mediation reporting delay. Reconcile by date, app, placement and impression-level records, and document the definition used for each report.
Policy or serving warning Invalid activity, missing consent, incorrect ad labeling, children-related settings, app-ads.txt or outdated SDK behavior. Stop any suspected artificial activity, review the relevant policy and network agreement, correct the implementation and appeal only through the documented process.

Operate the system after launch

  • Review SDKs and adapters each release. Keep dependencies current and read migration notes before updating. A network can change required permissions, initialization or supported formats.
  • Reconcile revenue. Mediation estimates and third-party dashboards can differ because of timing, currency, precision and invalid-traffic adjustments. Keep a daily export of impression-level data where available.
  • Monitor technical health. Track ad-load latency, timeouts, crashes, ANRs, show rate and callback errors by app version.
  • Audit privacy controls. Verify consent signaling, AAID handling, app-ads.txt and audience settings whenever you add a network or change the app’s target markets.
  • Document rollback settings. Save a known-good mediation group, floor configuration and SDK build so you can reverse a harmful change quickly.

A practical launch checklist

  1. Choose direct InMobi, waterfall mediation or bidding based on your traffic and operational capacity.
  2. Create and verify the required accounts, agreements, app records and format-specific placements.
  3. Record every InMobi account and placement ID and map it to the correct ad unit.
  4. Add the current SDK and adapter versions from the official integration documentation.
  5. Implement one or two formats at natural points in the user journey before expanding inventory.
  6. Configure consent for EEA, UK and Switzerland traffic and handle the Android 13-or-later AD_ID requirement when AAID is used.
  7. Publish and maintain app-ads.txt with current seller records.
  8. Test on designated devices with test ads; verify every callback and lifecycle path.
  9. Launch with conservative floors and frequency, then wait for enough data before making major pricing changes.
  10. Compare impression-level revenue, eCPM, fill, show rate, latency, retention and lifetime value by country, format and cohort.
  11. Remove placements that create accidental clicks, disruptive interruptions or a measurable retention loss.

Bottom line

Use InMobi directly when you need a focused, single-source test; use mediation when you want multiple networks to compete and a central place to manage them. AdMob is a practical control layer, while AppLovin MAX and Unity LevelPlay are alternatives worth evaluating when their integrations fit your app. The winning setup is the one that produces sustainable value for your actual users: compliant consent and identity handling, reliable fill, acceptable latency, deliberate placement timing and cohort-level lifetime value—not the highest isolated eCPM.
