Use each platform’s built-in automation to filter or hold risky comments, then have trusted human moderators review uncertain cases and handle context. AI moderation can reduce the volume people must inspect, but it is not a substitute for human judgment—and there is no single setting that works across YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.
What AI moderation does—and where people still matter
On YouTube, potentially inappropriate live-chat messages can be held for review. Twitch AutoMod similarly holds potentially risky messages so moderators can decide what to do. TikTok LIVE offers keyword filtering to limit comments matching words on a creator’s list. These systems have different action models; do not assume that a filter on one platform works like a review queue on another.

Human oversight matters because automated moderation can miss harmful messages or flag acceptable ones. YouTube lets the channel owner or a managing moderator show or hide held messages; if nobody acts, held messages remain hidden. Twitch advises using trusted human moderators and warns that automated systems cannot catch everything or be fully accurate. TikTok’s LIVE guidance also highlights the need to plan for real-time situations, including guest behavior.
There is no official cross-platform accuracy or speed ranking in the platform guidance cited here. Choose controls based on your channel’s risks, how quickly chat moves, who can review flagged messages, and which features your account can access.

Set up moderation on YouTube Live
YouTube provides a blocked-words list, a setting to hold potentially inappropriate live-chat messages, and slow mode to limit how often viewers can comment. Its message-holding options are Basic and Strict: Strict holds a broader range of messages, which may also mean more review work.
- Prepare blocked words before the broadcast. Add terms that are predictably abusive or specific to your channel’s rules. Avoid relying on a list alone: wording, spelling variations, and context can affect what a filter catches.
- Choose a review level. In YouTube Studio, open the live chat moderation settings and select Basic or Strict for holding potentially inappropriate messages. The exact controls available may depend on the current interface; check YouTube’s Moderate live chat instructions.
- Assign a trusted managing moderator. Make sure someone responsible can review held messages and show or hide them. If nobody takes action, held messages remain hidden.
- Turn on slow mode if the pace becomes unmanageable. It limits how frequently a viewer can comment, giving moderators more time to review chat.
- Reassess after the stream. Note which messages were incorrectly held or missed and adjust the blocked words, moderation level, or staffing for the next broadcast.
YouTube describes this as an aid, not a perfect system. Its guidance also recommends live-chat moderation and trusted moderators when avoiding restrictions on live streaming: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.

Turn on AutoMod and related controls for Twitch chat
Twitch AutoMod catches potentially risky messages and holds them for moderator review before they appear to other viewers. Twitch also documents blocked terms and phrases, link restrictions, slow mode, follower-only or subscriber-only modes, warnings, timeouts, bans, chat clearing, and Shield Mode. Availability can vary by account, so confirm current options in your channel.

A more cautious filter may create more held messages to review. Pick a setting that balances your channel’s tolerance for unwanted chat with moderator capacity.
- Choose reliable human moderators. Decide who reviews held messages and who can respond to active disruption. Twitch recommends trusted moderators because bots and automated systems are not fully accurate.
- Add channel-specific controls. Use blocked terms and phrases for recurring problems, and link restrictions where unsolicited links are a risk.
- Control chat volume during spikes. Slow mode or follower-only or subscriber-only chat can reduce the flow of messages. For more serious disruption, Twitch documents additional channel actions such as timeouts, bans, chat clearing, and Shield Mode.
- Consider a third-party bot only if there is a specific gap. Twitch says bots can help, especially in fast-moving chat or during malicious raids. Check a bot’s current Twitch support and features before relying on it.

Filter comments during TikTok LIVE
TikTok LIVE supports keyword filtering for comments a creator considers inappropriate or potentially against its Community Guidelines. Hosts and moderators can add up to 500 words to the LIVE keyword list. That is a documented product limit, not evidence that the filter catches every variation or improves moderation by a particular amount.
- Prepare the keyword list before going live. Add relevant terms and likely variations, then review the list for words that could hide ordinary conversation in your community.
- Brief moderators and guests. Agree on who will act if a comment or guest situation needs attention. In a multi-guest LIVE, TikTok says the host is responsible for content streamed by guests.
- Check the controls and eligibility in your account. Access and feature availability can vary by market, and some features may not be available when a creator first starts using LIVE.
- Plan for real-time decisions. TikTok warns that LIVE is broadcast in real time and cannot be edited during the stream. Decide in advance how moderators should respond when a filter misses a comment or flags one incorrectly.

Use the table as a comparison of documented controls, not as a ranking. The platforms do not provide a comparable measure of moderation accuracy or latency. If your team is small, start with a manageable review queue and rate controls; if chat surges, add trusted moderators or temporarily restrict participation rather than expecting automation to resolve every case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon moderation problems and what to do
- Too many messages are held: A strict or sensitive filter may exceed your review capacity. Reconsider the holding level, tune channel-specific blocked terms, or add moderator coverage before the next stream.
- Harmful messages are still appearing: Filters are imperfect. Have moderators act on visible chat, add recurring terms to blocked lists where appropriate, and use rate limits or restricted chat modes during a surge.
- A held message is legitimate: Have an authorized human review it and show it where the platform permits. Treat false positives as a reason to refine settings, not to remove all safeguards automatically.
- Chat moves faster than moderators can respond: Enable slow mode or a suitable restricted mode, recruit trusted moderators, and use any platform escalation controls that fit the situation.
- A moderation feature is missing: Availability can depend on platform, market, or account. Check the platform’s current help guidance and the controls shown in your own creator account before planning around it.
- A guest causes a problem on TikTok LIVE: The broadcast cannot be edited after the fact, and TikTok says the host is responsible for guest content in a multi-guest LIVE. Set expectations beforehand and decide who will intervene.
