To map travel routes in a graph database, represent airports, stations, or stops as nodes and model each usable service connection as a directed relationship. Add properties for the value you want to optimize—such as distance, duration, or cost—and include schedule and transfer constraints when the query must produce a feasible itinerary. The right model depends on whether you are finding a route, comparing hubs, or searching for a particular scheduled service.
Start with the question your travel graph must answer
“Efficient” has no single meaning in route planning. A path with the fewest legs may take longer or cost more than another path. Before choosing a graph structure or algorithm, specify the result you want: minimum connections, shortest distance, least travel time, lowest cost, or several viable alternatives.

That objective shapes the data you need. To count legs, a basic connection graph may be enough. To find a journey that can actually be taken on a specific date, the model also needs service schedules, operating calendars, and transfer rules. Neo4j’s Dijkstra source-target documentation and A* documentation illustrate weighted pathfinding, but neither algorithm supplies missing schedule or operational data.
Choose nodes and relationships that reflect the network
Use place nodes for meaningful locations
Airports, stations, stops, cities, and countries can each be separate node types when queries need those distinctions. For example, airport nodes can carry an IATA code, name, and geographic location; geographic hierarchy can connect an airport to its city or country. Neo4j’s airport training model uses airport nodes and route relationships with distance properties.

Make service direction explicit
Model a connection from A to B as directed if service availability or operating conditions can differ by direction. Do not infer that a return service exists merely because an outbound connection is present. The Neo4j journey-planning example uses directional train and bus service relationships and includes transfers.
Decide whether a service needs its own node
A direct airport-to-airport relationship can work when each connection has simple properties and the main query is about network connectivity. If travelers need to search by flight number, schedule, carrier, or other service-specific details, represent a flight or trip as its own entity and connect it to departure and arrival locations. A Neo4j flight-modeling tutorial demonstrates introducing a Flight concept to support flight-centered queries.

Keep the operational facts that determine whether a path is usable
A static connection says that two places are linked in the model; it does not establish that a service operates on the requested day or that a passenger can make a transfer. For itinerary search, represent schedule validity, operating days, and transfer constraints—such as minimum connection time—in queryable form. Keep source provenance with schedule data so that the system can distinguish where a service record came from and which data it reflects.

Choose a pathfinding method that matches the objective
| Method | Useful when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Unweighted shortest path | Every connection counts equally and the goal is the fewest legs. | It does not minimize distance, time, or fare unless those happen to align with leg count. |
| Dijkstra | You want a least-cost path using a positive relationship weight such as distance or duration. | Neo4j GDS documents source-to-target and single-source variants; its Dijkstra documentation requires positive relationship weights. Source-target · Single-source |
| A* | You want to use geographic information to guide a search through a spatial transport graph. | Neo4j’s example uses station latitude and longitude with distance; the heuristic and cost setup must suit the modeled network. Neo4j A* documentation |
| Yen’s k-shortest paths | You need multiple candidate routes rather than just one path. | Candidate paths still need to be evaluated against schedules, transfers, and other itinerary rules. Neo4j pathfinding course |
Weights should represent the thing being optimized. A distance weight answers a different question from a duration or fare weight. A generalized score can combine factors, but its meaning and trade-offs should be explicit; otherwise a returned “best” route is difficult to interpret.

Model multimodal journeys as services plus transfers
A train-and-bus itinerary needs more than a train network placed beside a bus network. Represent the individual service segments, their stops, and the permitted transfers between them. The journey-planning example from Neo4j combines train and bus services, locations, traveler position, and transfers.
For a practical query, the graph must make transfer feasibility testable. That may involve minimum connection times, station or stop identity, and the relevant service times. A path through connected nodes is only a candidate itinerary until those constraints and schedule availability are checked.

Integrating transport feeds is also a data problem. California DOT’s preliminary investigation of graph databases for multisource transportation data integration reviews the topic and cites a study of London’s multimodal transport network. Its abstract cautions that graph suitability for shortest-path workloads comes with costs; it does not establish one database as universally best.

- Connections or destinations reachable: useful for measuring network reach from a location.
- Travel time, transfers, or generalized cost: useful for comparing options for defined origin-destination pairs.
- Frequency and operating-day coverage: useful when schedule availability matters more than a nominal route link.
- Alternative paths: useful for assessing whether other routes remain when a connection is unavailable.
- Geographic role and passenger market: useful for interpreting a hub in the context of the travelers it serves.
A high number of direct connections does not automatically make an airport the best transfer point. The right comparison depends on the journeys and constraints being served.
One illustration of the distinction comes from WestJet. In a Neo4j-hosted customer story, Luka Petrovic, a WestJet software developer, said that only about 35% of the airline’s origin-destination airport pairs were routable in its network. That figure describes WestJet’s network, not a general share for airlines or a universal measure of hub quality. The same undated case study describes a graph of 500,000 nodes and 5 million relationships, and reports that its IT team became 530% faster at updating the online flight schedule. These are vendor-published customer figures, not independent, controlled database benchmarks. WestJet customer story
What a travel graph can—and cannot—promise
Pathfinding finds routes through the graph and properties supplied to it. It does not, by itself, guarantee live service availability, current ticket prices, disruption awareness, legal transfer feasibility, or complete and accurate source data. Those results depend on the freshness, coverage, and quality of the schedules and operational data, as well as the rules applied by the itinerary query.

Neo4j’s documentation and training offer concrete examples of airport modeling and pathfinding, while WestJet’s story describes one airline implementation. Neither establishes that graph databases outperform relational databases for every travel workload. A meaningful platform comparison would require the same data, routing queries, update patterns, constraints, and hardware.
