Model battery cooling in COMSOL by matching model fidelity to the engineering question, calculating battery heat generation, coupling that source to heat transfer, and adding fluid-flow physics wherever the cooling geometry requires it. A reduced cell model can predict average temperature efficiently; a pack model with resolved channels can reveal cell-to-cell gradients and coolant behavior. The defensible workflow is to state the scale, electrochemical assumptions, heat sources, cooling boundaries, material data, study type, and validation plan before interpreting temperatures.
Start with the result you need
Battery cooling models become unnecessarily expensive when they resolve details that cannot be supported by available data. Conversely, a model that reports only one average temperature cannot answer a question about internal gradients or channel maldistribution. Define the output before choosing physics.

- Cell-average temperature: a lumped electrochemical representation coupled to heat transfer may be sufficient.
- Internal cell gradients: use spatially resolved thermal domains and, when justified, a more detailed electrochemical source.
- Cell-to-cell or module variation: represent multiple cells, their contacts, thermal interfaces, and the relevant coolant path.
- Coolant-channel behavior: resolve the air or liquid domain with flow and heat-transfer physics; include inlet and outlet plumbing when it affects distribution.
COMSOL’s battery tutorials span lumped cell models, one-dimensional electrochemical models coupled to three-dimensional thermal domains, and pack-scale models with cooling fins and channels. This multiscale approach balances accuracy against computational cost: a lower-dimensional battery model can provide a heat source to a more detailed thermal and fluid model.

Reduced cell model
For an electrothermal starting point, use the Lumped Battery interface with Heat Transfer in Solids. COMSOL’s air-cooled cylindrical 18650 tutorial uses a two-dimensional axisymmetric geometry and follows charge, discharge, and rest. This approach is useful when the design question concerns the cell’s overall thermal response rather than local jelly-roll detail.

One-dimensional electrochemistry with three-dimensional cooling
A cylindrical-cell three-dimensional tutorial couples a one-dimensional electrochemical model to a three-dimensional thermal model and a cooling-fluid domain. The battery model supplies electrochemical heat while the three-dimensional domains resolve temperature and coolant motion. This is a practical compromise when channel geometry matters but a fully resolved electrochemical field would be too costly.
Prismatic-cell model
The COMSOL 6.4 prismatic-battery tutorial uses a lumped two-electrode model, current-conduction domains, coupled heat transfer, and an anisotropic representation of the jelly roll. Anisotropic conductivity represents the different thermal paths through the layered construction. The model also includes heat from current collectors and terminals, in addition to electrochemical heating.
Pack-scale model
For a pack, the Battery Pack interface can formulate electrochemical behavior from battery data while the thermal model resolves cells, cooling fins, and coolant passages. COMSOL’s liquid-cooled pack example uses a one-dimensional electrochemical heat source with three-dimensional flow and heat-transfer domains.
| Model path | Battery representation | Cooling representation | Typical question answered |

| 3D cylindrical cell | 1D electrochemical model | 3D thermal domain and cooling-fluid flow | Temperature field and coolant interaction around a cell |
| Prismatic cell | Lumped two-electrode model with current conduction | Coupled heat transfer; anisotropic jelly-roll conductivity | Effects of internal construction, collectors, terminals, and electrochemical heat |
| Liquid-cooled pack | 1D electrochemical heat source or Battery Pack interface | 3D flow, cells, fins, and channels | Pack gradients and cooling-channel performance |
Prepare the inputs before opening the Model Wizard
Collect the information that determines both the physics and the credibility of the result:
- Cell format and dimensions, module and pack arrangement, electrical connections, and cooling-channel geometry.
- Cell chemistry and the electrochemical data available for that chemistry, including the load or current profile.
- Electrical resistances, electrode or lumped-model parameters, and temperature dependence where available.
- Density, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity for cells, tabs, current collectors, fins, housing, and thermal interface materials.
- Coolant identity, inlet temperature, mass or volume flow, pressure conditions, and whether the flow is laminar or turbulent over the intended operating range.
- Initial temperature, ambient or wall conditions, electrical boundary conditions, and contact resistances that materially affect heat removal.
- Measurements for validation: temperatures at known locations, coolant temperatures, pressure drop, voltage, current, and timing of the load cycle.
The title alone does not establish a safe operating-temperature limit, a required flow rate, or a suitable cold-plate design. Those values must come from the actual cell documentation and application requirements.
Build the battery heat source
Use COMSOL’s electrochemical heat variables
Electrochemistry interfaces generally define heat-source variables automatically. You can couple them to a heat-transfer interface manually or use the Electrochemical Heating multiphysics feature when it matches the selected interfaces. Make the coupling visible in the model tree and document exactly which variables are used.
Account for the mechanisms your model contains
Heat is not a single universal term. In the prismatic example, the thermal model includes current-collector and terminal Joule heating together with electrochemical heating associated with overpotential. A reduced model may represent only a lumped electrical or electrochemical source. Do not imply that a lumped source captures every mechanism unless the formulation and data support that conclusion.

For each source, record its domain, sign convention, temperature dependence, and whether it varies with current, state of charge, or time. If a source is omitted, state the omission and explain why it is acceptable for the intended output.
Map a reduced source into a resolved domain
When a one-dimensional or lumped battery model feeds a three-dimensional thermal model, ensure that the source is distributed over the correct cell volume and synchronized with the electrochemical state. Check units and conservation: integrating the volumetric heat source over the active domains should give the total heat rate used by the thermal problem.
Represent air cooling, liquid cooling, and plumbing
Air cooling around a cell
If the air path itself matters, create a fluid domain around the cell and couple flow to heat transfer with Nonisothermal Flow. The three-dimensional cylindrical-cell tutorial demonstrates a one-way study in which the thermal or electrochemical solution supplies information to the flow-and-heat calculation without solving every field as a fully coupled problem. One-way coupling is less computationally demanding, but it must be physically justified: strong temperature-dependent property changes or flow-driven feedback can require tighter coupling.
Liquid-cooled cells and fins
For a liquid-cooled pack, resolve the cells, cooling fins, and channels in three dimensions. Couple the battery heat source to heat transfer and the coolant velocity and temperature through nonisothermal flow. Use realistic inlet temperature and flow conditions rather than an arbitrary convection coefficient when channel distribution is part of the design question.

Inlet and outlet lines
The liquid-cooled battery-energy-storage example adds Pipe Flow and Heat Transfer in Pipes for inlet and outlet coolant paths, while using turbulent flow in the cooling channels. A pipe representation can reduce mesh size for long lines, but its junctions with resolved channels need consistent flow, pressure, and temperature conditions.
Imposed convection as a deliberate simplification
An imposed heat-transfer coefficient can be appropriate when coolant behavior has already been characterized experimentally or in a separate flow model. Treat it as an input, not as a prediction. Record the coefficient, reference temperature, surface assignment, and source of the value; do not use it to claim channel-level performance.
Set up the COMSOL model step by step
- Create the geometry at the required scale. Start with a cell, repeat it into a module, or construct the complete pack only when the output requires that scope. Use symmetry only when geometry, loading, and cooling boundaries are symmetric.
- Add the battery interface. Choose Lumped Battery for a reduced electrothermal model, a one-dimensional electrochemical formulation for a cell-to-3D coupling, or Battery Pack for a documented pack-scale formulation.
- Add Heat Transfer in Solids. Assign density, heat capacity, and conductivity to every solid domain. Use anisotropic conductivity when layered construction makes through-plane and in-plane conduction materially different.
- Add the fluid interfaces if channels are resolved. Select a flow interface appropriate to the regime and add heat transfer in the fluid. Use Nonisothermal Flow to couple velocity and temperature.
- Connect the heat source. Add Electrochemical Heating where applicable, or enter the battery heat-source variable in a domain heat-source feature. Include collector, terminal, or contact heating only when represented by the chosen formulation.
- Define electrical and thermal boundaries. Apply the measured current or load cycle, initial state, initial temperature, coolant inlet condition, outlet pressure or flow condition, walls, symmetry planes, and external heat loss.
- Add pipe physics when needed. Use Pipe Flow and Heat Transfer in Pipes for inlet and outlet lines that influence pressure or coolant temperature but do not warrant a full three-dimensional mesh.
- Select the study type. Use a time-dependent study for a changing load or transient thermal response. A stationary or quasistationary study can represent a selected operating point only when the heat-generation and transport timescales justify it.
- Mesh the coupled regions. Refine near tabs, terminals, contacts, fin roots, channel walls, inlets, outlets, and sharp geometric transitions. For thin layered constructions, a swept mesh through the thickness can reduce element count while retaining resolution where it matters.
- Solve in stages when useful. A staged or one-way sequence can first obtain electrochemical heat and then solve flow and temperature. Compare it with a more tightly coupled solution when feedback is expected to be important.
State and test the simplifying assumptions
Average-temperature properties
The liquid-cooled pack example evaluates coolant and battery material properties at an average pack temperature. COMSOL notes that this is reasonable when temperature variation across the pack is small. Check that condition after solving; if the field shows large gradients, update properties locally or justify the approximation with a sensitivity study.

Quasistationary thermal balance
The same example assumes that heat generation changes slowly compared with heat transport, allowing a quasistationary thermal balance at the selected operating point. This assumption is not valid automatically for pulses, abrupt current changes, or short transients. Use a time-dependent study when the load changes on a timescale comparable to thermal transport.

One-way coupling
A one-way flow-and-heat sequence reduces computational demand, but it neglects feedback that may matter when temperature changes alter viscosity, density, electrical behavior, or heat generation. Run a sensitivity comparison or a coupled case if those dependencies are strong.
Homogenized and lumped domains
Homogenization reduces geometric detail. It is defensible only when the effective properties preserve the thermal behavior relevant to the output. Document the averaging direction, volume basis, and omitted interfaces so a reader can distinguish a resolved temperature from a volume-average prediction.
Choose mesh and solver settings from the physics
Do not judge mesh quality by element count alone. A coarse mesh in a broad cell interior may be adequate while a coarse mesh at a fin root or channel inlet can hide the largest gradient. Use mesh refinement to test the quantities you will report: maximum temperature, temperature difference between cells, outlet coolant temperature, pressure drop, and integrated heat rate.
The prismatic tutorial uses a user-defined mesh with swept meshing in the thickness direction to reduce element count. That strategy is especially useful for layered or thin geometries, provided the sweep follows the dominant gradient and resolves the interfaces needed by the model.
For transient studies, check time-step sensitivity around current changes and rest periods. For stationary studies, verify that the nonlinear solver converges to the same engineering quantities from more than one reasonable initial condition when the model has strong temperature-dependent properties.

Pair every result with its scope: cell, module, or pack; average or local temperature; resolved or homogenized domain; one-way or fully coupled solution; and transient or quasistationary study. State the material-property source, coolant conditions, boundary conditions, mesh strategy, and heat mechanisms included.
- Energy check: compare integrated generated heat with heat conducted to solids, carried by the coolant, and lost through external boundaries.
- Mesh check: refine the mesh and confirm that reported temperatures and gradients change by an acceptable amount for the intended decision.
- Time-step check: reduce the time step around load transitions and verify that peak temperature and timing are stable.
- Input sensitivity: vary uncertain conductivity, contact resistance, heat-source magnitude, and coolant flow to identify which measurements most affect the result.
- Experimental comparison: compare sensor locations and averaging windows exactly with the simulation output; do not compare a local simulated peak with an instrument that measures an averaged surface temperature.
The available examples are tutorial formulations, not universal design prescriptions. They do not establish chemistry-specific temperature limits or validated cooling targets for an unspecified battery.
How to model the pack scale from the cell scale
Build the scale transition deliberately. First validate a single-cell electrothermal representation against available electrical and temperature data. Then replicate the cell model or use its calibrated heat source in a module or pack domain. Add contacts, fins, housing, and channel manifolds only when they influence the target output.
Compare candidate model variants using five axes:
- Electrochemical detail: lumped or data-driven pack behavior versus more resolved battery physics.
- Spatial scale: cell, module, or pack; one-, two-, or three-dimensional representation.
- Cooling representation: imposed convection, resolved air flow, liquid channels, and pipe networks.
- Coupling: one-way or more fully coupled flow, heat, and electrochemistry.
- Computational cost and the validation data available for each scale.
Do not present these axes as a ranking of air versus liquid cooling. They describe different model formulations and different questions; the documented examples do not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of cooling technologies.
Documented example configuration: liquid-cooled BESS
COMSOL’s liquid-cooled battery-energy-storage example contains eight modules, with 56 cells per module in a 14S4p arrangement. It uses the Battery Pack interface, turbulent flow in cooling channels, nonisothermal-flow coupling, and Pipe Flow plus Heat Transfer in Pipes for inlet and outlet coolant paths.
Those counts and the 14S4p arrangement describe that example model only. They are not a general recommendation for battery sizing, module architecture, or operating conditions.

The temperature field is uniform when it should not be
Check whether the model uses a lumped temperature, an imposed convection coefficient, or homogenized properties that remove the gradient you are trying to study. Replace that simplification with resolved domains or directional properties only where the output requires it.
Best Value
Heat appears to vanish
Integrate the heat-source feature over its assigned domains and inspect all thermal boundaries. Typical causes are a source assigned to the wrong domain, inconsistent units, a sign error, or a coupling feature that does not reference the selected battery interface.
Coolant flow does not affect cell temperature
Confirm that the fluid and solid domains share the intended thermal boundary, that Nonisothermal Flow is active, and that the inlet temperature and flow condition are applied to the correct boundaries. If convection is imposed manually, the flow solution cannot change it.
The pack model is too expensive to solve
Reduce scope before deleting physics blindly. Use a one-dimensional electrochemical source, homogenize layered cells, apply symmetry where justified, represent long lines with pipe interfaces, and use a staged one-way study. Reintroduce detail at locations identified by sensitivity or validation results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA quasistationary result disagrees with a transient test
Check the timescale assumption. If current or heat generation changes rapidly relative to heat transport, solve the load cycle with a time-dependent study and compare peak temperatures rather than only the steady operating point.
