Keep narration easy to understand, then make each music handoff subtle: lower the bed under speech, fade it down after the final line, and bring the next bed in smoothly. For an always-on channel, clear the music rights for the actual format first—an uploaded story playlist and a continuous livestream do not necessarily have the same licensing terms.
Choose the format and clear the music first
Decide whether your channel runs a continuous live stream or publishes uploaded stories or compilations. Music permissions can depend on that distinction. YouTube says Creator Music is for eligible long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts, and its FAQ says it does not support licensing for live content. Creator Music usage details and the Creator Music FAQ explain the limits; check each track’s current terms before using it.

For uploaded stories
YouTube’s Audio Library is a platform-grounded starting point: YouTube describes its music and sound effects as copyright-safe, and says YouTube Partner Program members can monetize videos using them. Check the license column for every track. A Creative Commons track requires attribution in the description; the standard Audio Library license filter identifies tracks that do not require attribution. YouTube says only Audio Library music and effects are known to it as copyright-safe; a third-party library’s “royalty-free” label alone is not a guarantee. For continuous live streams
Use original music or obtain permission that explicitly covers live streaming on YouTube, the territories you serve, monetization, and repeated use. YouTube’s tips to find safe music note that a credit or “free” label does not itself prevent a Content ID claim. Save the license terms, track title, artist, download date, and any required attribution with the project.

Mix the handoff so the story stays in focus
- Set narration as the anchor. Listen at ordinary playback volume and reduce the music until every word—including quiet consonants and the ends of sentences—is easy to follow. Use volume automation or side-chain ducking if your editing software supports it. YouTube does not prescribe a background-music level in dB or LUFS.
- Finish the old story cleanly. Let the final spoken phrase end without a musical accent or cut competing with it. Fade the old bed down rather than stopping it abruptly.
- Choose a deliberate gap or bridge. A short quiet beat can help listeners register the next story. If a bridge better suits the pacing, keep it gentle and low enough not to distract from the opening narration.
- Fade in the next bed. Bring the new music in smoothly, and avoid placing a louder hit directly beneath an important first line. Keep the overall musical palette and perceived level consistent unless a change of mood clearly serves the story.
- Audition transitions back-to-back. Compare story openings and endings at the same playback level. Listen for jumps in loudness, tempo, instrumentation, or mood, as well as music masking speech.
- Check the rendered upload and its rights. Confirm the license covers the format and intended use, add required attribution, then inspect YouTube Studio for claims. YouTube says claims can affect visibility or monetization; Studio may offer options to replace claimed audio with Audio Library tracks or mute or trim the claimed segment. Preview edits carefully before saving. See Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.
There is no YouTube-prescribed fade duration or numerical music-to-voice offset in the cited guidance. Set those choices by listening, not by treating a particular dB, LUFS, or number of seconds as a platform rule. YouTube’s best practices for children’s and family content identify unclear audio and confusing story flow as traits that can make a video hard to follow.
Set the channel’s audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to designate content as made for kids or not. Its factors include whether children are the intended audience and whether the video includes child-directed stories, songs, language, or activities; the creator is responsible for selecting the audience setting. For made-for-kids videos and streams, YouTube restricts features including personalized ads, comments, notifications, live chat, cards, and end screens. These audience rules do not specify how to mix music, but they affect channel and stream setup.
