Mirroring, duplicating, and extending are different
Screen mirroring normally means that both screens show the same image. In Windows, that mode is called Duplicate. It is useful when everyone in a room should see the laptop desktop, a presentation, or a demonstration on a larger screen.

| Windows mode | What appears | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate | The same desktop on the computer and external display | Presentations, classroom viewing, and showing a group what is on the computer |
| Extend | The external display becomes additional desktop area | Multitasking, research, editing, and keeping controls on a separate screen |
| PC screen only | Content appears only on the computer screen | Temporarily stopping projection without disconnecting the display |
| Second screen only | Content appears only on the external display | Using a TV or projector as the sole viewing screen |
After a wireless connection is established, press Windows key + P whenever you need to change among these modes. The wireless connection and the display mode are separate choices: connecting a display does not automatically mean that Windows will duplicate the desktop.
Check compatibility before you try to connect
Wireless display standards are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s Windows workflow is based on Miracast. Apple’s guidance addresses AirPlay-compatible devices. A television can support one, both, or neither, so identify the protocol supported by the computer and the receiving display before troubleshooting menus.
Windows sender and Miracast receiver
A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer needs Miracast support, Wi-Fi enabled, and a target display that accepts Miracast. The target may be a television, projector, monitor, or a Windows PC configured as a receiver. If the display has no built-in Miracast receiver, a Miracast wireless display adapter connected to its HDMI input can provide one. Compatibility still has to be confirmed for the computer, adapter, and display together.
Mac sender and AirPlay receiver
AirPlay is a different system. Do not apply the Windows key combinations or assume that a Miracast receiver will appear in macOS. Use the current macOS AirPlay or Screen Mirroring controls documented by Apple for the version installed on the Mac, and verify that the receiving television or device is AirPlay-compatible.
Wired connection
A cable avoids wireless discovery and radio conditions, but the correct cable or video adapter depends on the computer’s output and the display’s input. Check both model specifications or inspect the ports before buying anything; there is no single cable that fits every computer and display combination.

Connect a Windows computer to a Miracast TV, projector, or monitor
Microsoft documents the following workflow for Windows 10 and Windows 11 when the external display supports Miracast.
- Turn on the television, projector, or monitor and select the input to which its wireless receiver is attached. If you are using an adapter, connect it to the display’s HDMI input and power it as its instructions require.
- On the Windows computer, make sure Wi-Fi is enabled. Miracast discovery depends on the wireless hardware even when the computer also has a wired network connection.
- Press Windows key + K. Windows opens the Cast panel and lists available wireless displays.
- Select the target display. Follow any pairing request or on-screen PIN prompt shown by the display.
- Once connected, press Windows key + P and choose Duplicate, Extend, PC screen only, or Second screen only.
If the display is not listed, do not repeatedly press the shortcut. Move to the troubleshooting sequence below: confirm Miracast support, check Wi-Fi and receiver discoverability, update drivers or firmware, then restart and reconnect.

Project to another Windows PC
A second Windows computer can act as the receiver, but it must be configured to accept projection first. The exact application name varies by Windows version.
- On the receiving computer, open Settings > System > Projecting to this PC.
- Install the Wireless Display optional feature if Windows says it is required. Windows 11 uses the Wireless Display app; the Windows 10 flow uses the Connect app.
- Launch the receiving app and set the projection permissions so that the computer is discoverable. Keep the receiver awake while you connect.
- On the sending computer, press Windows key + K and select the receiving PC from the list.
- Choose the desired layout with Windows key + P.
Both computers need compatible wireless hardware and drivers. If one PC is running a Windows edition or version with different labels, look for the Wireless Display optional feature and the Projecting to this PC page rather than relying on the exact app name.

1. Confirm Miracast support on both ends
Check the computer’s wireless-display capability and the television, projector, monitor, or adapter’s specifications. A display that only accepts another protocol will not appear in the Windows Cast panel. If the display lacks Miracast, an HDMI-connected Miracast adapter may solve the receiver-side limitation, but it cannot add missing Miracast support to an incompatible computer.
2. Enable Wi-Fi and bring the devices close enough to discover
Turn on Wi-Fi on the Windows computer and power the receiver. Wireless projection relies on the radio and can fail when a device is disabled, asleep, or out of practical range. Keep the computer and receiver near one another while pairing so that distance and interference are not the first variables you are testing.
3. Make the receiver discoverable
For a Windows PC receiver, open the Wireless Display or Connect app and revisit Settings > System > Projecting to this PC. A receiver app that is not running, or a permission setting that blocks discovery, will keep the computer out of the sender’s list.
4. Update drivers and firmware
Microsoft identifies graphics and wireless drivers, along with display or adapter firmware, as parts of the Miracast path. Install current updates offered for the computer and the receiver, then retry discovery. A graphics driver can affect encoding even when ordinary Wi-Fi networking works normally.
5. Restart and remove the old connection
Restart both the sending computer and the receiving display or adapter. If Windows remembers a failed wireless display, remove that display from the saved wireless-display or Bluetooth-related list presented by your Windows version, then run Windows key + K again and pair it as a new device.

6. Separate discovery from performance
If the display appears but the picture is unstable, the basic compatibility and discovery problem is solved. Continue with the wireless-quality checks instead of reinstalling the receiver repeatedly. If it never appears, return to protocol support, receiver discoverability, drivers, and firmware.
Use a Mac with an AirPlay-compatible display
Mac-to-display mirroring uses AirPlay rather than the Windows Miracast workflow. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance emphasizes conditions that must be correct before a receiver can be selected:
- Keep the Mac and the AirPlay-compatible receiver powered on and near one another.
- Update the operating systems and receiver software.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Enable AirPlay receiving in the relevant television, receiver, or Mac settings when the device requires an explicit permission.
- Restart the Mac and receiver if the target is still absent.
Because macOS labels and controls change by release, open the current AirPlay or Screen Mirroring control described in Apple’s documentation for your macOS version instead of following Windows key combinations. Select the compatible receiver there and choose the available mirroring or display option. The available Apple troubleshooting material does not establish one universal menu path for every macOS release, so the exact wording on your Mac may differ.
Do not confuse Mac display mirroring with iPhone Mirroring
Apple distinguishes showing an iPhone screen or streamed video on an AirPlay-compatible device from the interactive iPhone Mirroring feature on a Mac. iPhone Mirroring is currently unavailable in the European Union. That regional limitation applies to the iPhone feature; it does not mean that Mac-to-TV AirPlay mirroring follows the same availability rule.
Wireless versus wired: choose for the situation
| Approach | Compatibility basis | What setup requires | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows wireless display | Miracast support on the Windows computer and receiver | Wi-Fi enabled, receiver powered and discoverable, then Windows key + K | No direct video cable, but discovery, drivers, firmware, and radio conditions matter |
| Mac wireless display | AirPlay-compatible sender and receiver | Same Wi-Fi network, nearby powered devices, current software, and AirPlay receiving enabled where required | Convenient when compatible, but it is not interchangeable with Miracast |
| HDMI or another wired video path | Matching output on the computer and input on the display | The correct cable or computer-specific video adapter | A physical connection avoids wireless discovery; port compatibility must be checked first |
Wireless is practical when the display is across a room or the computer has no convenient cable route. A wired path is often the simpler diagnostic choice when wireless discovery is unreliable, provided that the computer and display have compatible ports and the right adapter.

What determines wireless picture and sound quality
Successful pairing does not guarantee a perfectly smooth image. Microsoft’s manufacturer guidance identifies Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, and driver characteristics as factors in wireless projection. The Miracast stack also depends on graphics-driver and encoding support.
Wi-Fi band and interference
Multi-band Wi-Fi can help. Microsoft describes 5 GHz as offering more bandwidth and less interference in suitable conditions. That is an engineering consideration, not a promise of a fixed range, resolution, or latency. Walls, neighboring networks, the receiver’s radio, and the computer’s wireless hardware can change the result.
Graphics and encoding support
The sending computer has to capture, encode, and transmit the desktop while continuing to render it. A current graphics driver and hardware that supports the required encoding path can make the difference between a receiver that connects and one that fails during negotiation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAudio path
Wireless projection carries more than pixels. Audio-driver behavior and the receiver’s capabilities affect whether sound follows the picture. If video appears but audio stays on the computer, inspect Windows’ available output devices after connecting and check the receiver’s audio support rather than assuming that every Miracast setup handles sound identically.
Do not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, range, or gaming latency from a wireless adapter. The source guidance treats these as dependent on hardware, drivers, environment, and protocol support.
Choosing a Miracast wireless display adapter
The most direct hardware category for a display without built-in Miracast is a Miracast wireless display adapter that connects to HDMI. Use this checklist before purchase:
- Verify that the Windows computer supports Miracast.
- Confirm that the television, projector, or monitor has a compatible HDMI input and can power the adapter as required.
- Check that the adapter supports the Windows version and wireless standards used by the computer.
- Read the receiver’s setup requirements for firmware updates, pairing, and network conditions.
- Keep return or compatibility policies in mind because the combination of computer hardware, adapter firmware, and display behavior determines the result.
An adapter is a receiver-side solution. It does not turn an unsupported Windows computer into a Miracast sender, and it does not make an AirPlay-only workflow compatible with Miracast. Confirm both ends before treating an adapter as the fix.

- Identify the sender. A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC points you toward Miracast; a Mac points you toward AirPlay controls.
- Identify the receiver. Check whether the TV, projector, monitor, or second PC supports the same protocol. If a display lacks Miracast, evaluate an HDMI-connected Miracast adapter.
- Choose the connection type. Use wireless for placement flexibility, or select a wired path after matching the computer output to the display input.
- Pair the devices. Windows uses Windows key + K; macOS uses its current AirPlay or Screen Mirroring control.
- Choose the desktop layout. On Windows, Windows key + P opens Duplicate, Extend, PC screen only, and Second screen only.
- Troubleshoot the earliest failed step. A missing device indicates compatibility, Wi-Fi, receiver, driver, or firmware trouble. A connected but unstable picture points to wireless quality, graphics, audio, or interference.
Windows 10 lifecycle note
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The wireless-display steps described for Windows 10 may still match the installed interface, but an unsupported operating system no longer receives normal Microsoft support. Recheck Microsoft’s current lifecycle information if you are maintaining an older computer or writing procedures for an organization.
