Gold is also extra-common below Y=-48 and in Badlands terrain above Y=32. These are tendencies in newly generated terrain, not guarantees for any particular cave or chunk, and they describe the 1.18 rules rather than every later version.
Where gold generates in the 1.18 ore distribution
The Java Edition 1.18 release notes, which introduced the Caves & Cliffs Part II changes to world height, cave generation and ore distribution, give three locations for gold:

A “strong bias” means Y=-16 is the most productive single height to dig toward, not that every nearby block will contain gold. Expect long stretches of stone with little or no gold, and expect occasional rich pockets.
Why there is no single best level
Mojang’s 1.18 notes state the principle directly: “There is no longer a single height level that is best for all ores – you need to make tradeoffs!” (Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 release notes; the notes do not name an individual author.)

In practice, the depth you choose determines which other ores you will encounter alongside gold. If you only want gold, Y=-16 is the baseline target. If you want gold and other resources in one trip, the tradeoff is a broader search.
Choosing a search route
Mojang’s official overview does not establish that one method reliably beats another for finding gold. The table below is a decision framework built on three practical questions, not a tested ranking.

Pick the route that matches your situation. A player with a large, safe cave network may find exploration faster, while a player building a mine will usually prefer tunneling at a fixed height.

- Torches or another light source for dark tunnels and cave floors.
- Spare blocks to bridge gaps, wall off water, or block a route you do not want to follow.
- Food and a way to climb out, since long searches use up both health and time.
- A clear route back, marked with blocks or a known tunnel, so you can leave if water or lava cuts off your path.
How gold drops and smelts
- Raw gold drop: The 1.17-era changes, shown in Java snapshot 21w14a, replaced the older smeltable ore block drop with raw gold. Mining gold ore without special tools yields raw gold, which you then smelt in a furnace.
- Silk Touch: According to the Java snapshot and the Bedrock Edition 1.17.0 release notes, Silk Touch can collect the gold ore block itself, and that block can still be smelted.
Check your version before applying these numbers
- Edition: The height figures above come from the Java Edition 1.18 release notes. Bedrock Edition players should confirm its own ore rules before applying them.
- Game version: Later versions may change ore tables. The official notes available for this guide do not establish a later gold-specific table, so confirm against the current release notes.
- World age: Chunks generated under older versions keep their original layout, so the Y-levels here apply to newly generated terrain.
- Not covered here: Pickaxe tier requirements, Fortune yields and Nether gold mechanics are not confirmed by the official material used for this guide. Check a current, edition-specific reference before relying on them.
