There is no supported direct in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2022. Plan the move workload by workload. In most environments, build a patched Windows Server 2022 host, migrate each role, test it, and then cut over. Use an in-place upgrade only where Microsoft supports the exact source and target path and the server is a suitable, nonclustered application server.
Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 reached end of support on October 10, 2023. Windows Server 2022 started its lifecycle on August 18, 2021; mainstream support is scheduled to end October 14, 2026, with extended support through October 15, 2031. Those dates make a controlled migration preferable to extending the life of an unpatched 2012 system.

What migration path is supported?
Microsoft’s upgrade-path table does not list Windows Server 2022 as a direct in-place target for either Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2.
| Source operating system | Windows Server 2016 | Windows Server 2019 | Windows Server 2022 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2012 | Supported upgrade target | Not listed as a supported direct target | Not listed as a supported direct target |
| Windows Server 2012 R2 | Supported upgrade target | Supported upgrade target | Not listed as a supported direct target |
That table means you should not mount Windows Server 2022 media on a 2012 server and expect a supported upgrade. Chaining several in-place upgrades is technically different from a direct upgrade, but it creates multiple maintenance windows, compatibility checks and rollback points. For most workloads, a side-by-side migration to a newly installed 2022 server is safer and easier to test.

Choose a method for each workload
Do not select one method for the entire estate. A domain controller, file server, DHCP server, Hyper-V host and clustered application can require different procedures.
| Method | Best fit | Advantages | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side migration | Most roles, new hardware, unsupported in-place configurations and Active Directory Domain Services | Allows staged testing, a clean operating system and a quick fallback to the old server | Requires a second server, data transfer and a planned cutover |
| Clean installation | New hardware or a server that has accumulated unsupported drivers, software or configuration | Removes legacy software and gives you a known-good baseline | Applications and roles must be installed and configured again |
| In-place upgrade | Eligible, nonclustered servers with a supported source/target path | Retains roles, settings and data on the same hardware | Requires a reboot and maintenance window; inherited problems remain and rollback is harder |
| Cluster operating-system rolling upgrade | Supported failover-cluster workloads | Nodes can be processed in sequence while the cluster continues serving workloads | Must follow the cluster-specific compatibility and sequencing procedure |
When side-by-side is the default
Use a new 2022 installation when the source is a domain controller, when the role is not listed as supported for in-place upgrade, when hardware is being replaced, or when the server has an uncertain software history. A new host also lets you prove that applications, certificates, firewall rules and monitoring work before production traffic moves.
When an in-place upgrade may be acceptable
Consider it only after confirming all of the following:

- The server is not a failover-cluster node requiring a rolling-upgrade process.
- The target edition, language, installation option and 64-bit architecture match the upgrade requirements.
- Every application and driver vendor supports Windows Server 2022.
- You have a tested, offline-reachable recovery copy and a maintenance window long enough for several reboots and validation.
Do not use an in-place upgrade as the default design for a server running Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).

- Installed roles and features, including AD DS, DNS, DHCP, file services, storage services, Hyper-V, failover clustering and management tools.
- Application names, versions, service dependencies, database locations, license keys and vendor support statements.
- Service accounts, gMSA use, certificates and private keys, scheduled tasks, scripts and automation credentials.
- IP addresses, DNS records, aliases, firewall rules, load-balancer members, storage paths, shares and mapped dependencies.
- Monitoring agents, backup jobs, antivirus or endpoint controls, patching policies and alert destinations.
- Virtual machines hosted on the server, their virtual switches, storage locations and application owners.
Mark each item as migrate, rebuild or retire. Identify systems that depend on a particular hostname or IP address, because those dependencies determine whether you can change DNS, reuse an address or need a temporary alias. Microsoft also advises bringing both source and destination servers to current updates before role migration.
Build recovery before changing production
A backup job that has never been restored is not a migration plan. Microsoft requires a full backup before an in-place upgrade covering the operating system, applications, data and virtual machines, plus a restore test.
Minimum recovery package
- A system-image or equivalent bare-metal backup of every source server being changed.
- Application-consistent backups for databases and other transactional systems.
- Separate copies of file data, virtual-machine disks and configuration exports.
- Copies of certificates with private keys, license information and recovery passwords.
- Directory-services recovery information, including a recent system-state backup for domain controllers.
- Recovery media and documented credentials that are available if the source server cannot boot.
Store the recovery data away from the server and test a representative restore. Record how long the restore takes and which operator performs it. Define rollback triggers before the change begins: a failed boot, a role service that will not start, application transaction errors, broken replication or DNS, authentication failures, or performance that misses an agreed threshold.
Prepare the Windows Server 2022 destination
- Confirm hardware and firmware. Check CPU, memory, storage-controller and network-adapter support, firmware levels and virtualization features. For a physical replacement, size capacity for peak workload rather than the old server’s average.
- Install the matching deployment option. Choose Server Core or Desktop Experience deliberately. A change in installation option is not a casual post-install conversion; applications and operating procedures must support the choice.
- Patch before migration. Apply current cumulative updates, servicing-stack updates, firmware and approved drivers. Reboot and confirm the expected build.
- Set identity and networking. Assign a temporary hostname and address, configure time synchronization, DNS and routing, and document every change. Do not place the new server in production under the old identity until the cutover plan calls for it.
- Install only required roles and tools. Keep the baseline minimal, then apply security policy, monitoring, backup and endpoint controls.
- Test with production-like data. Restore a copy of application data, run representative jobs and measure startup, throughput, authentication and backup behavior.
Migrate Active Directory Domain Services safely
Microsoft’s recommended approach is to install a clean operating system, promote new Windows Server 2022 domain controllers, validate them and demote the older controllers. Treating a domain controller as an ordinary application server risks authentication, replication and SYSVOL failures.
Recommended side-by-side sequence
- Build a patched Windows Server 2022 server with a static address and reliable time source.
- Join it to the existing domain using an account permitted to add computers.
- Install AD DS and DNS as required, then promote the server to an additional domain controller.
- Wait for replication and verify that the new controller advertises the correct sites, services and SYSVOL/NETLOGON shares.
- Test DNS resolution, secure dynamic updates, time synchronization, user authentication, group-policy processing and application LDAP queries.
- Transfer FSMO roles when the new controller is healthy. Confirm the role owners and document the result.
- Update applications, DHCP options, monitoring and backup jobs that reference the old controller.
- Demote the old controller through the supported removal process, then remove stale DNS and directory metadata only if required.
If you must upgrade an existing domain controller in place, Microsoft requires preparation of the directory: run adprep /forestprep once per forest and adprep /domainprep once per domain for the new version, following the documented prerequisites. This is an exception to the preferred clean-install design, not a shortcut around replication and recovery planning.

Move file, storage, DHCP and DNS workloads
File and storage servers
Use Windows Server Migration Tools for supported roles, settings, data and shares. Storage Migration Service can be appropriate for file and storage scenarios where it supports the source and destination combination. Preserve share names, NTFS permissions, share permissions, ownership, quotas, encryption settings and auditing. Copy data before the cutover, perform a final delta transfer during the maintenance window, then switch DNS aliases or namespace targets. Test access with ordinary users and service accounts, not only with an administrator.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
DHCP
Export the DHCP configuration and leases using the supported migration procedure, import it on the 2022 server, authorize the new server and verify scopes, reservations, options and failover settings. The migration matrix identifies DHCP migration as capable of no downtime when performed according to the procedure, but clients and network devices still need verification. Do not leave two unauthorized servers serving the same scopes.
DNS
DNS migration is supported, but it is not identified as a no-downtime operation. Replicate or recreate zones, forwarders, conditional forwarders, scavenging settings, DNSSEC material where used, and access-control rules. Check resolution from clients in every relevant network and verify that applications are not still pointing to an old address.
Move Hyper-V and application workloads
Inventory virtual switches, virtual hard disks, checkpoints, storage paths, replication settings and backup integration. A VM backup alone does not prove that the application inside the VM can recover. Restore or fail over a representative machine, boot it on the 2022 host, and test application transactions, licensing, network identity and scheduled jobs.
For applications installed directly on the server, install a supported 2022-compatible version where possible rather than copying an old binary tree. Recreate service accounts with least privilege, import certificates including private keys, install supported drivers and reapply firewall rules. Have the application owner execute a business transaction test before accepting the server.

Plan downtime and the cutover
Downtime depends on the role and the final synchronization step, not simply on the size of the operating-system upgrade. Build a runbook with an owner and an expected duration for each action.
| Workload | Typical cutover actions | Downtime guidance from the migration matrix |
|---|---|---|
| DHCP | Export, import, authorize the destination, verify scopes and disable the source | Can be performed with no downtime when the supported procedure is followed |
| DNS | Replicate or recreate zones, change client targets and verify resolution | Supported, but not identified as a no-downtime migration |
| File shares | Initial copy, final delta, preserve permissions, switch namespace or alias | Depends on data volume and the final lock window |
| Failover cluster | Drain and upgrade nodes in the documented sequence | Requires cluster-specific rolling-upgrade procedures |
| In-place server | Run Setup, reboot, validate roles and applications | Requires a maintenance window and at least one reboot |
Cutover checklist
- Announce the start and freeze changes on dependent systems.
- Confirm the last successful backup and that recovery media are available.
- Stop application writes or place the application in its supported maintenance mode.
- Perform the final data or configuration synchronization.
- Change DNS, aliases, load-balancer membership, DHCP authorization or cluster ownership as applicable.
- Start services on the 2022 destination and run technical and business tests.
- Record timestamps, errors and test results so the rollback decision is objective.
In-place upgrade procedure for an eligible server
This procedure applies only after the source/target path and role have been confirmed as supported. It does not make a 2012-to-2022 direct upgrade supported.
- Complete and test the full backup, then capture configuration exports and product keys.
- Apply current updates and reboot the source. Resolve pending reboots, disk errors and event-log failures.
- Review Microsoft’s hardware and software restrictions. Disconnect or disable NIC Teaming when required by the documented upgrade restrictions.
- Start Setup from supported Windows Server media while logged on to the existing installation.
- Choose the same edition and the option to keep files, settings and applications. Stop if Setup does not offer the expected choice.
- Allow the server to reboot without interruption. Keep console or out-of-band access available.
- After startup, verify activation, edition, build, drivers, event logs, services, certificates, scheduled tasks and firewall rules.
- Run application transactions, monitoring checks and a backup test before returning the server to normal service.
Never force Setup past a blocked compatibility check. A blocked role, unsupported driver or edition mismatch is a signal to use a clean installation and migration instead.
Validate every layer after migration
Acceptance should be written before the change and signed by the technical and application owners. Check:

Keep the old server powered off but recoverable until the acceptance criteria pass and the agreed observation period ends. Do not immediately reformat or repurpose it; that removes the fastest rollback option.

Common failure modes and recovery decisions
The upgrade path is blocked
Stop the in-place attempt. Reclassify the workload for side-by-side migration, or use a supported intermediate version only if the business accepts the additional complexity and every step is documented as supported.
The server boots but a role will not start
Check event logs, service accounts, certificates, drivers, dependencies and firewall rules. If the problem cannot be corrected within the agreed window, restore the image or return traffic to the old server rather than extending an unplanned outage.
Users can resolve names but cannot authenticate
For directory workloads, check replication, DNS registration, time skew, SYSVOL and FSMO ownership. Keep a healthy old domain controller online while the new controller is diagnosed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFile migration preserved data but not access
Compare share and NTFS permissions, inherited ACLs, ownership, encryption and service-account access. Test with a normal user and an application identity; administrator access alone can hide an ACL defect.
Performance is worse on 2022
Compare the same workload and measurement period, then inspect storage latency, memory pressure, CPU readiness, network drivers, antivirus exclusions and application configuration. If the agreed threshold is missed, use the documented rollback trigger while the old system remains available.
Licensing, lifecycle and documentation
Each Windows Server upgrade requires an appropriate license. Activation and licensing vary by distribution channel, edition and organization agreement, so record the product key or activation method for the destination before the maintenance window. Do not assume that a license assigned to the 2012 server automatically covers a new 2022 host.
Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 support ended October 10, 2023. Windows Server 2022’s lifecycle began August 18, 2021; Microsoft lists October 14, 2026 as the mainstream-support end date and October 15, 2031 as the extended-support end date. Windows Server 2012 R2 Extended Security Updates Year 3 is listed through October 13, 2026. Extended security coverage can buy time, but it does not replace a migration plan.
Close the project with an updated diagram, inventory, credentials and certificate ownership, backup and restore evidence, final DNS and IP assignments, acceptance results, rollback status and the date the old server can be securely retired.
