The safest Obsidian migration is a file-preserving transfer, not a notes-only export: make an untouched copy of the entire vault, move Markdown files and every referenced attachment together, keep paths unchanged for the first import, and test a representative sample in the destination before converting or reorganizing anything. Obsidian supports both Wikilinks and standard Markdown links, but the destination app may interpret paths, embeds, aliases, frontmatter, or block references differently.
What must be migrated
An Obsidian vault is a folder of Markdown notes plus the files those notes reference. A note can contain links to another note, an image embedded from the vault, a PDF attachment, or a file in a nested folder. Exporting or copying only the visible note text can leave valid-looking references pointing to files that were never moved.

Before you begin, identify three things:
- Markdown notes: files ending in
.md, including notes in nested folders. - Attachments: images, PDFs, audio, video, documents, and other files referenced by notes.
- Obsidian-specific constructs: Wikilinks, block references, aliases, callouts, embeds, and metadata that the new app may not support.
The destination is unspecified, so no importer can be assumed to preserve every feature. Treat the migration as a controlled copy followed by validation.

Close Obsidian or pause editing, then make a complete copy of the vault folder. A ZIP archive is also suitable. Keep this source copy unchanged until the destination has passed your checks. The backup is your rollback point if a conversion rewrites links, a bulk import skips attachments, or files are accidentally renamed.

- Quit Obsidian on every device that might still edit the vault, or stop making changes during the migration.
- Locate the vault’s top-level folder—the folder that contains your notes and Obsidian’s configuration folder.
- Copy the entire folder to a separate safe location, or create a ZIP containing the entire vault.
- Open the copy and confirm that it contains representative Markdown notes, attachment folders, and nested directories before proceeding.
- Mark the backup as read-only if your operating system supports that option, and do not use it as the working import set.
An external drive or another safe storage location is optional; buying new hardware is not required if you already have a reliable backup destination.
Step 2: Inventory notes, attachments, and link styles
Spend a few minutes mapping the vault before changing syntax. Record where attachments are stored and which link forms appear in your notes. This makes a missing file or unresolved link diagnosable later.
Record attachment locations
Obsidian can place dragged-in files in a vault folder, a specified folder, the same folder as the current note, or a subfolder under the current folder. Consequently, one vault may contain a central Attachments directory while another keeps images beside the notes that use them.
- List every folder that contains non-Markdown files referenced by notes.
- Note whether paths contain spaces, non-Latin characters, or repeated filenames.
- Include files that are linked but not displayed inline, such as PDFs and downloadable documents.
- Do not assume an apparently unused file is safe to delete; it may be referenced by a note you have not inspected.
Identify the link syntax
Obsidian supports both Wikilinks and Markdown links. Typical forms include:
| Purpose | Obsidian form | Portability consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Note in the vault | [[Three laws of motion]] |
Convenient in Obsidian, but another Markdown app may display it as plain text unless its importer understands Wikilinks. |
| Note with a folder path | [[Projects/Three laws of motion]] |
Depends on the destination preserving the same folder structure and resolving vault paths. |
| Standard Markdown note link | [Three laws of motion](Three%20laws%20of%20motion.md) |
Uses a broadly recognized Markdown form; spaces in the destination are URL-encoded as %20. |
| Markdown link to a nested note | [Three laws of motion](Projects/Three%20laws%20of%20motion.md) |
Relative folders must remain in the same relationship to the note for the path to continue working. |
Obsidian’s documentation identifies Markdown links as an interoperability option. That is not a guarantee that every destination will understand every link target, so preserve the original vault and test before converting.
Step 3: Decide whether to convert Wikilinks
There are two defensible approaches:
- Keep Wikilinks initially: Choose this when the destination’s importer explicitly supports them or when you want the smallest possible change before testing.
- Convert to Markdown links: Choose this when the destination documents standard Markdown import but does not mention Wikilinks, or when portability across several tools is a priority.
If you convert, preserve the link’s meaningful label and its target path. Do not replace every link with a guessed filename. A heading link, alias, or block reference may need a destination-specific rewrite rather than a simple text substitution.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Obsidian’s generated link-path settings include shortest unique path, relative path to the file, and absolute path in the vault. The choice affects what happens when folders move. For the first transfer, keep the existing folders and paths stable instead of changing this setting and reorganizing simultaneously.
Step 4: Keep files and paths together
Copy the Markdown files and their attachments as one set. Avoid renaming notes, flattening folders, or moving an attachment directory during the initial transfer. Every such change introduces another possible cause of a broken link.
- Duplicate the working copy of the backed-up vault for migration.
- Preserve the relative path from each note to each attachment.
- Keep filename capitalization and spaces unchanged.
- Copy nested folders recursively, not just the top-level Markdown files.
- Do not delete Obsidian’s original files until the destination has been checked.
A reference can remain syntactically valid while pointing to a file that was omitted from the transfer. Checking only the Markdown text therefore cannot prove that an image, PDF, or other embed survived.
Step 5: Read the destination app’s current import documentation
Import behavior varies significantly. A plain Markdown-folder reader may simply open files in place, while a database-oriented app may copy notes into an internal store and rewrite paths. Before a bulk import, confirm the destination’s documented behavior for:
| Capability to check | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Markdown folders | Can the app open an existing folder without first converting every file? |
| Attachments | Does the importer copy images, PDFs, and other linked files, or must they be imported separately? |
| Wikilinks | Are [[Note]] links converted, preserved, or shown as ordinary text? |
| Heading links | Does a link to a heading open the correct section after import? |
| Block references | Can the app resolve Obsidian block IDs, or will those links require manual replacement? |
| Aliases and frontmatter | Are aliases, tags, YAML fields, and other metadata retained or mapped to new fields? |
| Rollback | Can you remove the imported set and start again without altering the source copy? |
If the documentation is unclear, assume the feature is unverified and test it rather than promising that it will transfer.

Step 6: Build a representative test batch
Do not use one plain note as your only test. Select a small batch that exercises the structures you actually rely on. Include at least:

- A note linking to another note with a simple filename.
- A note whose target contains spaces in its filename.
- A link to a note in a nested folder.
- A heading link and, if present in your vault, a block reference.
- A link using an alias or a custom display label.
- An inline image and a non-image file such as a PDF.
- An attachment stored in a subfolder rather than beside the note.
- A note containing frontmatter, tags, callouts, or other syntax important to your workflow.
Import this batch into a test area or a disposable destination account. For each case, verify both the link target and the rendered content. A link that opens a note but loses its heading or block target is only partially preserved.
Step 7: Import the sample and inspect the results
- Import the test Markdown files using the destination’s documented method.
- Provide the attachment folders if the importer asks for a separate media directory.
- Open every ordinary note link and confirm that it reaches the intended note.
- Open heading links and check that they land on the intended heading, not merely the top of the file.
- Check block references, aliases, and callouts individually; these are common points of feature loss.
- Open each image, PDF, and other embedded file. Confirm that it renders and that the file can still be opened or downloaded.
- Inspect the resulting Markdown or database record for changed paths, missing frontmatter, or altered filenames.
- Record failures before changing any setting. A short failure log is more useful than repeatedly guessing at conversions.
If the sample fails, stop and adjust the import method or conversion plan. Do not proceed on the assumption that a larger batch will behave differently.
Step 8: Perform the bulk transfer
Once the sample passes, repeat the same process for the full working copy. Keep the source backup untouched and retain the original folder hierarchy during this phase.

- Freeze edits in the source vault so the file set does not change halfway through the import.
- Copy all Markdown notes and all attachment directories, including nested folders.
- Use the tested Wikilink or Markdown-link strategy consistently; do not mix ad-hoc rewrites into the bulk operation.
- Import in batches if the destination has file-count or size limits, preserving the same relative paths.
- After each batch, spot-check links and attachments before adding the next batch.
- Keep a list of files skipped by the importer and resolve them before considering the migration complete.
How Obsidian link paths affect portability
Path style determines what a link means after a folder move. A shortest-unique path may work while names remain unique but become ambiguous after reorganization. A relative path depends on the relationship between the source note and target file. An absolute vault path depends on the destination retaining an equivalent vault root.
For the initial migration, relative stability is more valuable than tidiness:
- Keep folders in their original locations.
- Keep capitalization and spaces unchanged.
- Do not flatten a hierarchy to make the destination look cleaner.
- Only reorganize after links have been validated, and then use the destination’s own link-update feature where available.
Obsidian can automatically update internal links when a file is renamed inside Obsidian. That setting helps with renames made there; it does not repair arbitrary moves made outside Obsidian and does not guarantee that another app will interpret the updated link.

Attachments and embeds: what to verify
Dragging a file into an Obsidian editor copies it to the configured attachment location and embeds it in the note. The Markdown may therefore contain a path to a file that lives far from the note itself. Obsidian’s embed system supports images and other files from the vault, but the destination may support only a subset.
Images
Check inline rendering at normal size and after reopening the destination. A broken image icon usually indicates a missing file or a path the destination does not resolve, not a problem with the image data itself.
PDFs and documents
Verify that the file exists in the imported attachment area and that clicking its reference opens the actual document. Some apps preserve a link but do not provide an inline viewer; that is a presentation difference, whereas a missing file is a migration failure.
Nested attachment paths
Test at least one attachment stored in a subfolder. A destination that handles files beside notes may still fail when the path contains several directory levels or URL-encoded spaces.

Standard Markdown links are only one part of a vault. Obsidian identifies block references as specific to Obsidian rather than part of standard Markdown. Treat them as migration checks, not as portable links. The same caution applies to aliases, callouts, embeds, and other app-specific constructs unless the destination explicitly documents support.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Block references: confirm whether the target opens the referenced paragraph or block. If not, replace the reference with a normal note link or copied quotation according to your workflow.
- Aliases: check whether a displayed alias still resolves to the intended note or has become plain text.
- Callouts: verify whether the visual callout remains formatted or is reduced to ordinary Markdown.
- Embeds: distinguish an embedded file that renders inline from a plain path that merely appears in text.
- Frontmatter and tags: compare important fields before and after import, especially if the destination maps YAML to its own properties.
Do not silently discard information that the destination cannot represent. Preserve the original Markdown so you can recover the source syntax later.

Post-migration validation
Validation should combine automated searching with manual opening. Use the destination’s unresolved-link view or search tools if it provides them, then inspect high-value notes by hand.
- Search for unresolved-link indicators, empty targets, and literal Wikilink brackets.
- Search for attachment paths that point to folders not present in the destination.
- Open a sample from every major folder, not only recently edited notes.
- Check notes containing spaces, punctuation, duplicate names, and non-ASCII characters.
- Open every attachment type that matters to your work, including at least one image and one PDF.
- Compare note counts and attachment counts between the source copy and destination where the apps expose those totals.
- Review a few long notes to catch truncated content or lost frontmatter.
Keep the untouched source backup until these checks pass and you have successfully opened the destination on the devices where you plan to use it.
Troubleshooting common failures
Wikilinks appear as plain text
The destination probably does not parse Obsidian’s Wikilink syntax. Restore the source copy, convert links to standard Markdown using the destination’s documented importer or a tested conversion method, and repeat the sample import. Do not convert the only copy of your vault.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Links open the wrong note
Look for duplicate filenames, changed capitalization, or a folder path that was shortened during import. Restore the original hierarchy, use a path that uniquely identifies the target, and retest links containing spaces and nested folders.
Images or PDFs are missing
Confirm that the physical attachment files were copied, then compare the path in the note with the file’s location in the destination. If the destination copied notes but not media, import the attachment directory using its separate media option or copy the files into the location its documentation specifies.
Heading or block links land at the top of a note
The destination may support note links but not Obsidian heading or block references. Keep the original reference in the source backup and replace unsupported targets with ordinary note links, headings, or quoted text that the destination can represent.
Renames made outside Obsidian broke links
Undo the rename in the working copy or restore the affected files from the untouched backup. Obsidian’s automatic internal-link update setting applies to renames made within Obsidian; it is not a general repair mechanism for external file operations or another app’s database.
When to reorganize the vault
Separate migration from cleanup. First prove that the original structure works in the destination. Only then rename notes, merge attachment folders, change path styles, or redesign metadata. Make one category of change at a time and validate after each batch. This sequencing gives every broken link a clear cause and leaves the original backup available for comparison.
Migration checklist
- Complete vault copied or archived before edits.
- Markdown notes and every referenced attachment included.
- Wikilink versus Markdown-link strategy chosen from the destination’s documented support.
- Folder structure, filenames, capitalization, and spaces preserved for the first import.
- Sample includes ordinary links, spaces, nested paths, headings, blocks, aliases, images, PDFs, and important metadata.
- Sample links open the correct notes and embedded files render.
- Bulk import performed from a working copy, not the untouched backup.
- Unresolved links, missing files, unsupported syntax, and skipped files reviewed.
- Source backup retained until the destination is proven usable.
The practical rule
Move the vault as a connected file tree, test the destination with difficult examples before committing, and treat every app-specific feature as unverified until you open it there. This approach preserves a recoverable source, exposes path and attachment problems while the sample is small, and avoids turning a cleanup project into an irreversible data loss event.
