How to Migrate Installed Packages and Scripts to a New Package Manager

There is no reliable one-command conversion for every program on a computer. A safe migration separates operating-system packages, globally installed language packages, project dependencies, and your own scripts and configuration; inventories each group with the tool that owns it; then rebuilds and tests the destination setup before removing anything. This approach preserves project lockfiles, exposes packages hidden from a system manager, and gives you a reversible path when names, versions, paths, or architectures differ.

What a package-manager migration actually includes

“Installed packages” can mean several different things. A system manager may know about native libraries and applications, while language tools maintain their own global directories and project environments. A project’s manifest and lockfile describe yet another scope, and shell scripts or service definitions may contain installation assumptions that no package index records.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Scope Typical owner What to preserve Why a separate inventory is needed
Operating-system packages System package manager Package names, enabled repositories or taps, installed applications, and required services The manager can usually export only the package types it supports; names and availability may change on another OS or architecture.
Global language packages Language-specific tools such as npm, pip, gem, or cpan Global package list, executable locations, and the language runtime version These installs are normally outside a system manager’s records. Homebrew explicitly says it does not track packages installed directly through npm, pip, gem, or cpan, even when files happen to be under a Homebrew prefix (Homebrew’s language-package guidance).
Project dependencies Project manifest and lockfile Manifest, lockfile, workspace definition, build scripts, and runtime version The lockfile, not a machine-wide inventory, is what records the dependency graph intended for that project.
Scripts and configuration Your repository, dotfiles, service definitions, and shell startup files Scripts, PATH changes, environment variables, absolute paths, permissions, hooks, and service names Package managers do not automatically translate assumptions embedded in your files.

Start by writing down which of these scopes you are moving. A system-manager export cannot substitute for a language-tool export, and a project lockfile cannot describe unrelated command-line utilities.

Make a migration record before changing the old machine

1. Define the source, destination, and platform

Record the old manager, the new manager, operating-system name and version, CPU architecture, installation prefixes, and whether each item is global or project-local. Also note which accounts run services and which shell starts by default. Homebrew’s installation documentation shows that its default prefix differs by platform and architecture, so scripts containing absolute paths or PATH assumptions deserve explicit review (Homebrew Installation).

Do not assume that a package with the same name has the same build, command, configuration location, or dependency set on the target platform. Treat the destination as a new environment that must be verified.

2. Capture every source of state

Save the system manager’s supported inventory in its documented export format. Separately record global language packages, project manifests and lockfiles, shell startup files, environment-variable definitions, custom scripts, scheduled jobs, service configuration, and any manually downloaded tools. Include the command used to produce each record and the date, so you can distinguish an intentional change from an incomplete export.

Keep the original inventories and configuration in a location that will remain available after the old manager is removed. A plain text copy is useful for review, but it is not a substitute for a manager-specific export when the manager offers one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Take a supported system snapshot

For Homebrew, the documented snapshot mechanism is brew bundle dump. It writes a Brewfile describing supported installed state. Review that file rather than treating it as an unquestionable script: remove accidental development packages, add comments explaining unusual entries, and check that every listed item is still wanted.

The matching restore operation is brew bundle, run where the Brewfile is available. Both commands are Homebrew-specific; do not apply them to another package manager. Read the current Homebrew Bundle and Brewfile documentation before migrating because supported integrations and syntax can evolve.

Understand what an export can and cannot reproduce

An export is useful only within the scope and guarantees of its owner. Homebrew Bundle supports formulae and casks and documents integrations that can include taps, Mac App Store applications, VS Code extensions, Go packages, Cargo packages, npm packages, uv tools, Flatpak packages, and krew plugins. The exact set depends on current Homebrew support, so check the documentation when you create and restore the file.

Artifact Captures Does not guarantee Use it for
System-manager inventory Packages the manager owns and can export Language-manager globals, manually installed binaries, or every configuration file Recreating the manager-owned portion of a machine.
Homebrew Brewfile Supported formulae, casks, taps, and documented integrations Arbitrary historical formula versions or a universal lockfile Reviewable restoration of supported Homebrew-managed state.
Project manifest plus lockfile Declared dependencies and the resolved project graph Unrelated global tools and machine services Rebuilding a project environment reproducibly.
Language-tool export Packages owned by that language tool, subject to its format Packages owned by another tool or binaries installed manually Recreating global or isolated language environments.

Do not call a Brewfile an exact reproducibility lockfile. Homebrew describes itself as a rolling-release manager and says it does not support installing arbitrary older versions; a Brewfile has no general mechanism for pinning every formula to an exact historical version. If exact versions matter, preserve the relevant project lockfile or use the version-management mechanism documented by the particular tool.

Map packages by purpose before installing replacements

Build a mapping sheet with one row per item. Use the package’s purpose, not only its name, as the primary key. For each row, answer the following questions:

  • What executable, library, service, or editor integration does the package provide?
  • Is the destination manager’s package equivalent available for the target operating system and CPU architecture?
  • Is the item now supplied as a dependency of another package, making a separate install unnecessary?
  • Does it require a runtime, a compiler, a service account, a repository, or an installation hook?
  • Where will its executable and configuration live on the new system?
  • What test proves that the replacement serves the same purpose?

Mark each row as direct equivalent, different package name, provided by a dependency, not available, or manual replacement required. “Not available” is a valid result; installing a similarly named package without checking its behavior can create a harder-to-diagnose failure than leaving the item out.

Mapping result Action
Direct equivalent Install it in a small batch and verify its version and primary command.
Different name Document the old-to-new name and test the command or API your scripts actually use.
Dependency supplied Confirm the required executable or library is present, then omit the redundant direct install.
Unavailable for the target Find a supported alternative or keep the old environment until the dependent workflow is replaced.
Manual replacement Record its installation source, checksum or release identifier where available, path, and update procedure.

Recreate project dependencies from project metadata

Keep the manifest and lockfile together

Copy the project manifest, lockfile, workspace definition, build configuration, and documented runtime version before changing managers. These files describe the project’s intended dependency graph more accurately than a list of globally installed packages. Commit the preserved files or keep a read-only backup so an import failure does not destroy the known-good state.

Importing a project into pnpm

When the destination is pnpm, its documented pnpm import command generates pnpm-lock.yaml from another package manager’s lockfile. This is a project-level conversion, not a machine-wide migration. Follow the current pnpm import documentation for the lockfile formats and options supported by your version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the existing project manifest and source lockfile in the project directory.
  2. If the repository is a workspace, create pnpm-workspace.yaml first as required by pnpm’s documented workflow.
  3. Run pnpm import from the project root.
  4. Inspect the generated pnpm-lock.yaml and the resulting dependency changes before committing it.
  5. Install the project with pnpm, run its tests and build, and check any native modules or post-install hooks.
  6. Update documented developer and continuous-integration commands only after the new lockfile passes those checks.

Keep the original lockfile until the project has been validated. An imported lockfile can expose differences in peer dependencies, optional packages, platform-specific builds, or lifecycle scripts; those differences belong in the project migration review rather than in a system package inventory.

Rebuild global language environments separately

For each language tool, use that tool’s supported listing or export process and save the runtime version alongside the package list. A package installed globally may provide a command used by shell scripts, but it may also be a project dependency that should be moved into a manifest and lockfile instead. Prefer an isolated project environment for project work, then keep global installations limited to genuinely machine-wide utilities.

Do not infer ownership from a filesystem path. Homebrew notes that npm, pip, gem, and cpan packages are managed by those tools even if their files are located under Homebrew’s prefix (Language Runtimes and Packages). Export and restore them with their own managers, then verify which executable wins when multiple copies are installed.

At this boundary, avoid using sudo merely to force a language package installation, and do not change ownership of system-managed directories as a workaround. Homebrew gives this guidance for its interaction with language package managers; other ecosystems may have different privilege models, so consult the destination tool’s documentation rather than applying a universal rule.

Audit scripts, PATH, and configuration as first-class migration items

A package list cannot reveal every assumption in a script. Read each script that installs software, starts a service, invokes a command, edits configuration, or sets environment variables. Look for:

  • Absolute paths to binaries, libraries, interpreters, or configuration files.
  • Executable names that changed with the destination package.
  • PATH ordering and shell startup files such as profile or shell configuration files.
  • Environment variables, secrets references, locale settings, and working-directory assumptions.
  • Service names, launch mechanisms, ports, users, groups, and permissions.
  • Post-install hooks, compiler flags, native-library locations, and architecture-specific options.
  • Commands that assume a particular package manager, repository, prefix, or installation directory.

Homebrew’s installation guidance specifically calls out shell configuration and PATH updates, and its prefixes vary by platform and architecture (Homebrew Installation). Instead of hard-coding a new path everywhere, use the destination manager’s documented environment setup where possible, then test from a clean shell that loads the same startup files as a normal user.

Script assumption Migration check Pass condition
Executable path Resolve the command in a clean shell and print its version. The expected binary is selected without relying on the old prefix.
PATH ordering Start a new login and non-login shell, then inspect command resolution. Interactive shells, scripts, and automation select the intended tool consistently.
Configuration location Compare generated and user-edited files under the new prefix. Settings are loaded once from the intended location.
Service definition Start, stop, restart, and query the service using the destination platform’s mechanism. The service runs under the correct account with expected ports and permissions.
Installation hook Run the project’s install or build procedure in a clean environment. Hooks complete without referencing missing packages or old directories.

Install and validate in small batches

Rebuilding everything at once makes the first failure difficult to attribute. Install foundational runtimes and repositories first, then related packages, then project environments and services. After each batch, record what changed and test before continuing.

  1. Prepare the destination. Install the new manager using its official instructions, confirm the operating-system version and architecture, and establish the intended prefix and shell setup.
  2. Restore manager-owned packages. Use the reviewed export, such as a Brewfile with brew bundle for Homebrew-supported entries. Stop and resolve unavailable or renamed packages instead of silently skipping them.
  3. Restore language runtimes and globals. Use each language tool’s own records. Confirm that the selected runtime matches the project and that global utilities resolve from the intended directory.
  4. Recreate projects. Import or install from manifests and lockfiles. For pnpm workspaces, ensure pnpm-workspace.yaml exists before running pnpm import.
  5. Apply configuration. Update PATH, shell startup files, environment variables, service definitions, permissions, and script paths deliberately. Review the diff rather than copying an entire old profile blindly.
  6. Run functional checks. Test commands, libraries, builds, project tests, scheduled jobs, and services from both an interactive shell and the automation context that will use them.
  7. Record exceptions. For every omitted package or manual workaround, document the reason, replacement, owner, and future update path.
Validation area What to verify
Executable identity Command resolves to the destination installation and reports the expected major version.
Dependencies Project install completes from its manifest and lockfile without undeclared global packages.
Native components Modules or libraries build for the target architecture and load at runtime.
Services Processes start automatically when intended, use the right account, and expose expected endpoints.
Permissions Normal users can read, execute, and update only what they should; no ownership workaround was needed.
Automation CI jobs, scheduled tasks, deployment scripts, and non-interactive shells see the same required tools.

Use a Homebrew migration as a concrete example

The following sequence applies to Homebrew-owned state only; it does not replace exports from npm, pip, gem, cpan, project managers, or manually installed software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the old machine, run brew bundle dump and preserve the resulting Brewfile with your migration records.
  2. Open the Brewfile and remove entries you no longer need. Check taps, casks, and integrations against the current Brewfile documentation.
  3. Install Homebrew on the destination using the current platform-specific instructions. Confirm its prefix, architecture, and shell configuration.
  4. Copy the reviewed Brewfile to the destination and run brew bundle.
  5. Separately restore language-manager globals and project dependencies, then update scripts that point at the old prefix.
  6. Run the validation checks for executables, services, permissions, shell startup, projects, and automation before uninstalling the old installation.

Because Homebrew is rolling release, this process aims to restore supported package identity and relationships, not to reproduce every historical binary byte-for-byte. Keep the old machine or a complete rollback record until the destination has passed the workflows that matter to you.

Troubleshoot failures by symptom

The command is missing after installation

Check whether the package was actually restored, whether it belongs to a language manager rather than the system manager, and whether the destination bin directory is on PATH in the shell or automation context that failed. Compare command resolution in a fresh shell with the path recorded in your migration sheet.

The package name exists but the build is unavailable

Verify operating-system and CPU architecture support, repository or tap configuration, and runtime prerequisites. A same-name package may not provide the same feature set. Use the purpose-based mapping and select a supported alternative or defer the dependent workflow.

A project installs but tests fail

Compare the original and generated lockfiles, runtime versions, workspace metadata, optional dependencies, peer dependencies, and lifecycle hooks. Re-run the project with only declared dependencies available so an accidental global package cannot hide an incomplete manifest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A service starts manually but not automatically

Inspect the destination service definition, user and group, environment variables, working directory, ports, and startup mechanism. Scripts that worked under the old manager may reference its service name or prefix.

Installation requires elevated permissions

First determine which tool owns the package and which directory it is trying to modify. Do not respond by changing ownership of a system-managed directory or adding sudo indiscriminately. Follow the destination manager’s documented user, virtual-environment, or system-install model.

Keep the migration reversible, then retire the old manager

There is no universal rollback command that can undo every package, configuration edit, service change, and script modification across ecosystems. Reversibility comes from preserving the old inventory and lockfiles, keeping backups of configuration, recording manual changes, and delaying removal until validation passes.

  • Compare the destination inventory with the source inventory by purpose, not just line count.
  • Manually verify tools that were outside the source manager’s records.
  • Keep old project lockfiles until the new installation has built and tested successfully.
  • Document packages intentionally omitted, renamed, replaced, or supplied transitively.
  • Remove the old manager only after dependent scripts, services, projects, and automation no longer reference its paths.
  • After removal, run the same clean-shell and project checks again; an old PATH entry can otherwise mask an incomplete migration.

Choosing the right migration artifact

Need Best artifact or workflow Version fidelity Review and recovery characteristics
Restore supported machine-level packages Source manager’s export, such as Homebrew Bundle Usually package identity and current supported versions, not arbitrary historical versions Readable and reviewable; retain the original export for comparison.
Rebuild a language environment The language tool’s own export or isolated environment definition Depends on that tool’s format and runtime capture Separate from system inventory; easier to audit when globals are minimized.
Move a project to another JavaScript manager Manifest plus lockfile, with pnpm import when moving to pnpm Preserves the project graph as represented by the lockfile; import may require review Changes are visible in version control and testable before rollout.
Move scripts and operational behavior Manual review, path/configuration updates, and functional tests No automatic version guarantee Requires explicit checks because scripts encode assumptions that inventories do not show.

The safest migration is therefore layered: export what the manager owns, preserve lockfiles for projects, recreate language environments with their own tools, and treat scripts and configuration as code that must be reviewed and tested.
