There is no documented one-click importer that converts Home Assistant automations into Apple Home. The dependable approach is a staged rebuild: keep Home Assistant running, expose selected entities through the HomeKit Bridge integration, recreate only the rules Apple Home can express, and leave template-heavy or integration-dependent logic in Home Assistant. This gives household members Apple Home and Siri controls without risking a wholesale outage.

What actually moves from Home Assistant to Apple Home?

Home Assistant and Apple Home can operate together, but they do not use the same automation format. Home Assistant stores automations in YAML, while Apple Home stores its own rules inside the Apple Home environment. Home Assistant’s HomeKit Bridge integration makes Home Assistant entities available to Apple HomeKit so they can be controlled from Apple’s Home app and Siri, even when the underlying devices do not natively support HomeKit. That integration is an entity bridge, not an automation converter.

In practical terms, you can present a Home Assistant light, switch, sensor, scene, or script in Apple Home and then build a new Apple Home automation around that item. The original YAML trigger, conditions, actions, mode, templates, and helper dependencies do not come across automatically.

Home Assistant’s FAQ explicitly describes the platforms as able to work alongside one another. Treat that coexistence model as the default architecture unless you have a specific reason to replace Home Assistant entirely.

Choose an owner for every automation

Before rebuilding anything, decide whether Apple Home or Home Assistant will own each rule. A rule should have one active owner. Keeping equivalent copies enabled in both systems is a common cause of duplicate lights, repeated notifications, and difficult-to-explain delays.

Decision question Prefer Apple Home when Prefer Home Assistant when
Trigger and condition coverage The rule uses a straightforward time, occupancy, contact, temperature, or scene trigger and simple conditions. The rule depends on unusual events, several condition branches, state duration, or HA-specific event data.
Templates and calculations No template or calculated value is needed. A Jinja template, dynamically generated value, variable, or calculated threshold is required.
Integrations and helpers Every device and helper needed by the rule is visible in Apple Home. The rule relies on an HA-only integration, helper, script chain, calendar source, webhook, or notification service.
Household usability Family members need an obvious tile, scene, or Siri phrase. The automation is administrative, diagnostic, or intentionally hidden from everyday users.
Observability Simple activity history is sufficient. You need Home Assistant traces, detailed logs, or predictable recovery after failures.
Failure behavior The rule can safely stop if the Apple Home hub is unavailable. You need local fallback behavior, retries, or HA-controlled recovery.

A useful compromise is to keep the logic in Home Assistant and expose a scene or script as the Apple Home control surface. The household sees a simple button or Siri command, while Home Assistant retains the branching and integrations.

Stage 0: back up Home Assistant and map what you have

Make a recoverable backup

  1. Save a full Home Assistant configuration backup using the backup function available in your installation.
  2. Keep a separate copy of automations.yaml and any included YAML files.
  3. Record the names and entity IDs of helpers, scripts, scenes, templates, and integrations referenced by each automation.
  4. Note which automations are currently enabled, their execution mode, and any timing or delay that could make a test appear to fail.

Do not begin by disabling the existing rules. A working Home Assistant automation is your rollback path while Apple Home versions are being built and tested.

Inventory each automation

Create one row per automation with these fields:

  • Trigger type and the exact entity or event that starts it.
  • Conditions, including time windows, presence, sun position, numeric thresholds, and state duration.
  • Actions, in order, including scenes, scripts, notifications, delays, and service calls.
  • Execution mode, such as whether a new run is blocked, queued, restarted, or allowed to run in parallel.
  • Dependencies on helpers, templates, events, integrations, or devices that Apple Home may not expose.
  • The desired owner, failure behavior, and a safe way to test the rule.

Classify before you convert

Mark each row as rebuild, wrap, or leave. Rebuild means Apple Home can perform the whole rule. Wrap means Home Assistant keeps the logic but exposes a scene or script for Apple Home. Leave means the automation should remain entirely in Home Assistant because conversion would remove important behavior.

Stage 1: expose only the entities Apple Home needs

In Home Assistant, add or configure the HomeKit Bridge integration from the integrations area, then publish only the lights, switches, sensors, scenes, and scripts required by your Apple Home plan. A smaller accessory list is easier to understand and reduces the chance that a family member changes an internal helper or diagnostic entity.

  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.

Keep names and entity IDs stable

Use clear, room-based names before you expose an item. The HomeKit Bridge documentation warns that changing an entity ID without a unique ID can cause the Home app to lose accessory configuration. Rename deliberately, record the old and new identifiers, and avoid repeated renaming while automations are being rebuilt.

Expose controls, not implementation details

  • Expose a scene when users should start a coordinated routine such as an evening shutdown.
  • Expose a script when Home Assistant must perform several actions or handle a condition that Apple Home cannot represent.
  • Expose a sensor only when it is needed as a trigger or visible status.
  • Do not expose every helper, diagnostic sensor, or intermediate switch unless there is a specific household use for it.

After changing the bridge configuration, confirm that the intended accessories appear in Apple Home with the expected room, service type, and name. If an accessory is missing, fix the bridge exposure before creating automations; otherwise you may build a rule around the wrong object.

Stage 2: rebuild the rules Apple Home can express

Apple Home’s exact labels can vary by iOS, iPadOS, and Apple Home release, but the workflow is generally the same: open the Home app, choose the automation area, create a personal or home automation, select a trigger, add conditions if offered, choose scenes or accessories to control, and save. Verify the resulting rule in the automation list before testing it.

Time-based routines

  1. Create a new home automation and choose a time-of-day trigger.
  2. Set the time or a relative event such as sunrise or sunset when that option is available on your software version.
  3. Add a presence or room condition if the routine should run only when someone is home.
  4. Select the exposed accessories or scene, set their target states, and save.
  5. Test at a near-term time first rather than waiting for the normal schedule.

Keep the original Home Assistant schedule enabled during the first real test only if you can prevent conflicting actions. If both rules would change the same device, temporarily choose a test time that the old rule will not use, or disable the old copy immediately before the controlled test.

Occupancy and presence routines

Use Apple Home for simple arrival and departure behavior when the required household presence information is available there. Select the arrival or departure event, choose the relevant people, restrict the rule to a time window if necessary, and select a scene rather than a long list of individual changes when the behavior is fixed.

Presence rules deserve extra caution: a phone that is offline, a person excluded from the household, or a delayed location update can make the trigger appear inconsistent. Keep safety-critical or security-sensitive decisions in Home Assistant unless you have verified the failure behavior you want.

Contact, motion, and temperature triggers

  1. Choose the exposed sensor as the trigger.
  2. Specify the state change, such as a door opening, motion being detected, or a temperature crossing the available threshold.
  3. Add a time or presence condition when the action should be limited to certain circumstances.
  4. Choose the scene or accessories to control and set any available duration or turn-off behavior.
  5. Trigger the sensor physically and check both the accessory state and the automation activity record.

Apple Home may not offer the same state-duration, hysteresis, or repeated-trigger controls as a Home Assistant YAML rule. If a motion light must remain on for a precise interval, suppress retriggers, or use a calculated threshold, compare the actual Apple Home options with the original behavior before assigning ownership.

Scene and script buttons

A reliable migration pattern is to expose a Home Assistant scene or script and let Apple Home provide the button, room tile, or Siri phrase. This works well for routines such as bedtime, leaving home, or a multi-device reset. The Apple Home rule remains simple, while Home Assistant can continue to sequence actions, check conditions, and call integrations that are not available in Apple Home.

What should stay in Home Assistant?

Keep the original automation in Home Assistant when recreating it would materially change its behavior. The following cases normally belong in Home Assistant:

  • Templates: Jinja expressions, dynamically selected targets, calculated thresholds, or text assembled at run time.
  • Multi-branch logic: Several mutually exclusive paths, nested conditions, variables, or fallback actions.
  • Cross-integration events: Webhooks, unusual event types, service responses, or data from integrations that Apple Home cannot see.
  • Advanced notifications: Rules that choose recipients, include generated content, attach diagnostic data, or retry delivery.
  • HA-only helpers: Input numbers, dates, booleans, selects, counters, or timers that are central to the decision.
  • Precise execution modes: Rules that must queue runs, restart on a new trigger, cancel a delay, or prevent overlapping actions.
  • Recovery and safety logic: Explicit retries, watchdog behavior, confirmation checks, or a fallback state after a hub or service failure.

Home Assistant’s device-automation developer documentation says the project is exploring alternatives to device automations and that existing device automations continue to work while new device automations will not be accepted. For new or rebuilt logic, prefer the core trigger, condition, and action model instead of making a new migration dependent on a device-automation-specific implementation.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

When Apple Shortcuts helps—and where it stops

Use Apple Shortcuts only when the required branching and app actions are available on the reader’s operating system. Shortcuts can be a useful intermediary for a personal routine or an app-level action, but it is not a general YAML-to-Apple-Home converter.

For each proposed Shortcut, verify the complete path: what starts it, whether it can access the needed Home accessory or scene, what conditions it can evaluate, and what happens when the phone is locked, absent, offline, or not the person who created the automation. If any of those checks fail, expose a Home Assistant script instead of forcing the rule into a fragile Shortcut.

Cut over one automation at a time

  1. Leave the Home Assistant automation intact while you build the Apple Home version.
  2. Use a test trigger that is safe, observable, and unlikely to affect other household routines.
  3. Run the Apple Home automation from its real trigger, not only from a manual button.
  4. Check the Apple Home activity history and the resulting accessory states.
  5. Check Home Assistant logs and trace data for unexpected runs, missing entities, or duplicate actions.
  6. Disable the Home Assistant copy only after the Apple Home rule has succeeded under real conditions.
  7. Repeat the test during the rule’s normal schedule or presence state before declaring the migration complete.
  8. Remove the old rule gradually, keeping its YAML in the backup and recording the replacement owner.

If the Apple Home version fails, re-enable the Home Assistant rule, restore the last known-good bridge configuration, and investigate one dependency at a time. Do not change the trigger, entity names, and actions simultaneously; that makes the cause difficult to isolate.

Home Assistant hosting and Apple Home hubs are separate decisions

Home Assistant must remain online for any exposed Home Assistant entity, scene, or script to respond. Home Assistant’s FAQ calls Home Assistant Green the official plug-and-play smart-home hub and says basic setup takes about 15 minutes. A Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or virtual machine are alternatives, but their maintenance, storage, power, and backup requirements are yours to manage.

Apple Home hub hardware is a separate consideration. Depending on your current Apple Home software and features, remote access and automations may require a home hub such as a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K. Verify the requirements for the operating-system versions in your household before buying hardware. A Home hub does not replace the Home Assistant host: Apple Home still needs Home Assistant running when the accessory being controlled is supplied by HomeKit Bridge.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No Home Assistant accessories appear HomeKit Bridge is not configured, the wrong bridge was paired, or entities were not included. Confirm the integration is running, review the published entity list, and pair the intended bridge in Apple Home.
An accessory appears with the wrong room or service The exposed entity type or name changed during setup. Correct the Home Assistant entity and bridge exposure, then avoid repeated renames while rebuilding.
Apple Home automation runs twice Both the old Home Assistant rule and the new Apple Home rule are enabled. Identify the owner, disable the duplicate, and test again from the real trigger.
A rule cannot reproduce the old behavior Apple Home lacks a template, event, state-duration, helper, or branch used by the YAML. Keep the logic in Home Assistant and expose a scene or script.
Manual control works but the automation does not The trigger or condition is not producing the state Apple Home expects. Test the trigger sensor, inspect activity history, and remove conditions one at a time for diagnosis.
Home Assistant changes are not reflected YAML was edited but automations were not reloaded, or the configuration has an error. Validate the configuration, reload automations after YAML changes, and inspect logs before testing.
Editing is unavailable in the Home Assistant UI The automation is not in automations.yaml with an ID. Use the UI’s Migrate action to open an editable copy, or move the automation into the supported file structure with a stable ID.
Apple Home stops responding when Home Assistant is offline The exposed accessory depends on the Home Assistant server. Restore Home Assistant, keep critical local controls on native hardware where possible, and document the dependency.

Document the finished system

For every automation, keep a short record containing the owner, trigger, conditions, actions, exposed entities, and failure behavior. Give the Apple Home rule and Home Assistant automation names that make ownership obvious, such as Apple Home - Hallway night scene or HA - Energy price load control.

Record whether a rule depends on the Home Assistant server, an Apple Home hub, a particular person’s phone, or an external service. This turns troubleshooting into a dependency check instead of guesswork. Revisit the record whenever you rename an entity, replace a hub, change a helper, or update the automation’s trigger.

About unofficial converters and Apple Home exports

A Home Assistant Community post dated March 8, 2026 reports that Apple’s public API exposes shortcut automation names without their internal conditional logic and that Apple provides no Home app automation export. The post describes an unofficial extractor and converter, but it is community evidence, not an Apple-supported migration path. Treat any tool that asks for private credentials or promises complete conversion as experimental, and keep a full backup before trying it.

The official Home Assistant documentation does not provide a complete feature-parity matrix for every Apple Home release. Evaluate each rule on its own trigger, conditions, actions, observability, and recovery requirements rather than assuming that a rule is equivalent because both platforms show the same accessory.
