How to Migrate a WordPress Website to a New Host Without Downtime

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

The safest way to move a live WordPress website without taking it offline is to run both hosts in parallel: back up the current site, copy its files and database to the new server, preview that copy privately, synchronize any new content, then change only the web DNS records. Keep the old host online while DNS caches expire and you verify the new one.

“No downtime” is an operational goal, not a promise that every DNS resolver will switch at the same instant. A controlled migration prevents an outage even while different visitors briefly reach different hosts.

What a no-downtime migration actually requires

A WordPress installation has two parts that must agree:

  • The WordPress directory, including core files, uploads, plugins, themes and custom files.
  • The database, which contains posts, pages, settings, users, comments, menus and much of the site’s configuration.

The official WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook says you do not need to reinstall WordPress when moving servers. When the database and URL remain the same, its guidance is: “If database and URL remain the same, you can move by just copying your files and database.”

The source host should continue serving visitors while the destination is prepared and tested. The public DNS change is the final routing step, not the first step of the migration.

1. Inventory the live site before changing anything

Write down what the current site depends on. This prevents a successful file copy from becoming a failed production move because an unrelated service was forgotten.

Access and ownership

  • WordPress administrator access.
  • File access to the old and new hosting accounts, such as a control-panel file manager, SFTP or another transfer method.
  • Database export and import access.
  • Authority to edit the domain’s DNS records.
  • Access to the email, payment, analytics, CDN, firewall and other services that refer to the domain.

Runtime and configuration notes

Record the current PHP version, database engine and version, enabled extensions, web-server settings, scheduled tasks, SSL configuration, redirects, and any custom configuration files. Confirm that the destination supports the versions and extensions the site actually uses. Also record storage usage and the size of the database so you can identify an incomplete transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write activity

Classify the site by how often its data changes. A brochure site may receive only occasional administrator edits. A store, membership site, publication with comments, or lead-generation site can receive orders, comments, registrations or form submissions while you are copying it. Those writes make the first database export a snapshot that becomes stale.

2. Make and verify a restorable backup

Before touching the destination, create a complete backup of the WordPress directory and database. WordPress specifically calls out the directory, images, plugins, other files and database as items to back up before moving servers.

Keep two separate copies

Keep one untouched backup separate from the files you will manipulate for the migration. A local computer or external hard drive can hold an additional copy; the important requirement is that both the files and database are preserved, not the particular storage device.

Check that the backup is usable

  • Confirm that the archive contains the uploads directory and any custom theme or plugin files, not just WordPress core.
  • Confirm that the database export completes without errors and has a plausible size.
  • Store the database credentials and backup date with the archive, but not in a publicly accessible location.
  • If your host offers a restore test or temporary staging account, restore the copy there before proceeding.

Do not cancel the old hosting account or overwrite the only backup until the new site has been stable and verified.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

3. Build the destination without changing the public site

Create the site root and database

Create the destination document root and an empty database with a dedicated database user. Note the database name, username, password and host value supplied by the new host. Hosting panels label these fields differently, so use the destination’s current connection details rather than assuming they match the old account.

Transfer the files

Copy the complete WordPress directory to the destination. Include hidden files such as .htaccess when the server uses them, and preserve the uploads, plugins, themes and any custom files. A migration plugin or host-assisted service can package this work, but inspect the result rather than assuming it included custom configuration.

Import the database

Import the database export into the destination database. Then open wp-config.php on the destination and update the database name, user, password and host values if they differ from the old server.

For a host-only move, leave the WordPress URLs unchanged. Do not change home or siteurl merely to preview the copy; the goal is for the destination to answer for the same domain after DNS changes.

Platform-specific import limits

A platform importer can have rules that do not apply to a normal server-to-server move. For example, WordPress.com’s documented importer requires a fresh paid-plan destination and warns that importing replaces the destination’s contents. Treat such requirements as specific to that platform, and read its current documentation before importing.

4. Preview the new server before changing DNS

You need to test the destination while the public still reaches the old host. Use a staging facility if your host provides one, or use a hosts-file override on your own computer.

Use a hosts-file override

  1. Find the destination server’s public IP address.
  2. On your test computer, open the hosts file with administrator privileges. On Windows it is commonly C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts; on macOS and Linux it is commonly /etc/hosts.
  3. Add a line containing the destination IP, a space, and the real domain, for example 203.0.113.10 example.com. Use your actual IP and domain instead of the example.
  4. Save the file, clear the computer’s DNS cache if necessary, and open the domain in a private browser window.
  5. Confirm that the response is coming from the destination, then test the site.
  6. Remove the temporary line after testing so your computer returns to normal DNS resolution.

This override affects only the computer on which it is configured. Public visitors continue to use the old host, which makes it suitable for private acceptance testing.

HostPanel’s 4 August 2026 migration guide specifically recommends testing functional elements such as forms and shop baskets during the private preview. A page that loads is not enough if a submission or transaction still points to the old environment.

5. Keep active content consistent during the move

Choose one authoritative copy

Until cutover, the old site is normally authoritative because it is receiving public traffic. Do not edit posts, settings or products on both copies; divergent changes are difficult to reconcile.

Plan a final synchronization

For a site that accepts comments, form submissions, registrations, orders or frequent edits, schedule a short write freeze or a final database synchronization close to DNS cutover. HostPanel recommends a fresh export immediately before a DNS switch for sites with ongoing writes.

  1. Announce a short maintenance or editing window to administrators and, where necessary, visitors.
  2. Stop or pause writes on the old site, such as new orders, comments or editorial changes.
  3. Export the current database again after the pause.
  4. Import that fresh export into the destination, or use the migration tool’s documented incremental-sync process.
  5. Recheck the destination’s newest post, order or form record before changing DNS.

The exact synchronization method depends on the host and database tools. Do not let the destination become the public source of truth until you have confirmed that the latest records are present.

6. Prepare DNS, then make the controlled switch

Lower the web-record TTL in advance

HostPanel suggests lowering the relevant DNS TTL 24–48 hours before the move and gives 300 seconds as an example target. Those are that publisher’s recommendations, not a universal propagation guarantee. A resolver may have cached an earlier value, and some networks do not refresh on the schedule you expect.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Change only the records used for web traffic, such as the site’s A, AAAA or web CNAME records. If DNS is hosted separately from the web server, preserve mail records such as MX and any verification records unless you intentionally plan to change them.

Switch after the final checks

  1. Confirm that the destination passes the hosts-file or staging tests.
  2. Complete the final database synchronization and release or document the write freeze.
  3. Update the web records to the destination values.
  4. Leave the old host online and unchanged while caches expire and monitoring begins.

When the site is stable, restore a normal TTL. Do not interpret a quick response from one resolver as proof that every visitor has switched; test from more than one network or resolver.

7. Verify the destination and retain rollback

Immediately after the DNS change, check the home page, representative content, login, forms and any transaction flow. Compare the newest records with the old site’s final export. Review PHP and web-server logs for database errors, missing files, permission failures and redirect loops. Verify that the certificate covers the domain and that both HTTP and HTTPS behave as intended.

Keep the old host available for rollback while the destination proves stable. Keep the untouched backup as well. The appropriate retention period depends on the site’s traffic, transaction cycle and hosting agreement; there is no single safe number of days for every installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the domain or URL changes too

A host move that keeps the same domain is simpler than a rebrand or domain change. If the domain or URL path changes, stored old URLs can break links, images, menus and theme output.

Why a naïve replacement is dangerous

WordPress warns that broad database text replacement can damage serialized data. Serialized values store string lengths, so replacing a short URL with a longer one without a serialization-aware tool can make those values unreadable.

Use a serialization-aware process

  1. Work on a copy and take a fresh backup.
  2. List every old hostname and path variant, including HTTP and HTTPS forms.
  3. Run a compatible search-and-replace tool, then inspect its report.
  4. Test pages, media, menus, widgets, redirects, forms and administrator access.
  5. Only after verification, repeat the controlled cutover for the new domain.

WordPress lists dashboard tools and WP-CLI as safer approaches than a raw database-wide replacement. Its handbook gives this example:

wp search-replace 'example.dev' 'example.com' --skip-columns=guid

Substitute the actual old and new URLs, run it against the correct database, and treat --skip-columns=guid as part of the handbook’s example rather than a universal instruction for every migration. Test the result before making it public.

WordPress Multisite needs a separate plan

Do not apply a single-site checklist blindly to Multisite. WordPress describes network moves as more complex because references can appear throughout the database. A domain change can also require manual changes to the database, .htaccess and wp-config.php.

Map every site in the network, its domains and paths, sunrise or domain-mapping configuration, uploads, network plugins and scheduled tasks. Test the network dashboard and several subsites through the private preview. For a large or business-critical network, involve an administrator experienced with Multisite rather than treating it as a collection of independent single sites.

Choosing a migration approach

There is no universally best method. Choose according to your access, the site’s write activity and the destination’s restrictions.

Approach Control and access Write-heavy sites Validation and recovery Important check
Manual file and database transfer Highest control; requires file, database and DNS access Requires a planned final export or synchronization Private hosts-file testing, separate backup and old host provide direct rollback Update destination database credentials in wp-config.php when they change
Migration plugin Packages or transfers files and database, reducing manual steps Confirm whether it supports an incremental or final sync Still test the copied site privately and retain an independent backup Check custom configuration, large uploads and destination import limits
Host-assisted migration May reduce transfer work, but depends on the provider’s process and access Get written confirmation of how new writes are handled at cutover Require a preview, acceptance checks and a rollback plan Verify current service terms, runtime compatibility and DNS responsibilities

Whichever method you choose, the non-negotiable controls are a restorable files-and-database backup, a private destination test, a plan for writes, a deliberate DNS change and time to keep the old site available.

Common failure modes and fixes

The domain still shows the old host

This is usually a resolver or browser cache rather than a failed copy. Test from another network and resolver, confirm the authoritative DNS record, and keep the old host online. Do not repeatedly change records while caches are still expiring.

The destination reports a database connection error

Recheck the destination database name, user, password and host in wp-config.php. Confirm that the database user has access to the imported database and that the import completed.

Recent orders, comments or form entries are missing

The initial export was stale. Return to the old site’s final authoritative data, pause writes, perform the planned fresh export or synchronization, and verify the newest records on the destination before directing more traffic there.

Pages work but forms or checkout fail

Inspect the form or payment integration’s callback URL, credentials, firewall rules and outgoing-mail settings on the destination. Test a complete submission or transaction, not only the page that contains the form.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Links or images point to the old domain

If the domain changed, use a serialization-aware search-and-replace process on a copy. Check uploads, menus, widgets, redirects and theme settings after the replacement. Do not use an untested raw SQL replacement across the entire database.

A Multisite network has broken subsites

Review network domain and path mappings, database references, .htaccess and wp-config.php. Multisite moves often need manual corrections that a single-site migration package does not perform.

A practical cutover decision

Proceed only when the destination has the complete files and database, its credentials work, private testing passes, active writes are synchronized or paused, and DNS changes are ready. Then switch the web records, monitor from multiple networks, and preserve the old host and backups until the new installation has earned your confidence.
