How to Migrate a Unity Project to Godot or Unreal Engine

There is no one-click Unity-to-Godot or Unity-to-Unreal converter. A reliable migration is a staged rebuild: freeze the Unity project as a reference, export original source assets, create a clean project in the destination engine, prove the approach with one representative vertical slice, then rebuild and test each system. Meshes, textures, audio and other source files often transfer; scenes, prefabs, materials, import settings and all gameplay code are engine-specific work.

What “migration” really means

Moving a Unity project to another engine is not the same as opening the same project in a different editor. Unity stores behavior and presentation in its own scene, prefab, component, serialization and import systems. Godot and Unreal interpret those ideas differently. The practical goal is therefore to preserve the game’s authored content and player-facing behavior while rebuilding the project structure and runtime systems in the new engine.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Think of the Unity project as a frozen specification. It provides the reference for how a scene should look, how input should feel, how a save file should behave and how a build should perform. The destination project is a new implementation that uses compatible source assets where possible.

What can usually be reused

  • Original texture images, meshes, animation files, audio, fonts, videos and other source media.
  • Authored data that is stored in an engine-neutral format, such as JSON, CSV or a documented binary format.
  • Reference material such as concept art, level layouts, test cases and localization text.

What normally has to be rebuilt

  • Unity scenes, prefabs, GameObjects, components and serialized references.
  • Materials, shaders, render-pipeline settings, lighting setups and post-processing.
  • C# scripts, Bolt graphs, input actions, physics behavior, animation state machines, UI, save integration, networking and platform services.
  • Editor extensions, custom importers, build scripts and packages that depend on Unity APIs.

Unity assets versus Unity project data

A frequent mistake is treating a .unitypackage as a universal interchange format. Unity’s manual describes it as a container for a collection of Unity project assets; changing a source file or its import settings can trigger Unity to re-import it. That package is useful for distributing content between Unity projects, but it is not a Godot project or an Unreal project. Export the original source files separately whenever you can.

Unity content Likely destination treatment Important checks
Static meshes Import as a static-mesh asset Scale, axis orientation, pivots, normals, tangents, material slots and collision
Skinned meshes Import as a skeletal mesh with a compatible skeleton Bone hierarchy, bind pose, naming, scale and skin weights
Animations Import animation clips through a supported interchange format Frame rate, root motion, coordinate system, looping and bone mapping
Textures Import common image files Color space, alpha interpretation, mipmaps, compression and channel packing
Audio Import supported audio files Sample rate, channel layout, streaming versus in-memory playback and compression
Fonts, video and authored data Bring in the original files or convert to a documented neutral format Licensing, encoding, platform support and references from code

Epic’s migration documentation lists FBX and OBJ for meshes, USD for skeletal meshes, FBX/OBJ/ABC for animation, common image formats for textures, and WAV, OGG, FLAC, AIF, OPUS and MP3 for audio. These are file-level interchange options, not guarantees of visual or behavioral parity. Verify every imported asset in the target engine.

How Unity concepts map to Godot and Unreal

Unity concept Godot approach Unreal approach
Scene A scene file containing a tree of nodes; scenes can be nested or inherited. A level, usually containing Actors and their Components.
GameObject A node, or a root node with child nodes that divide responsibilities. An Actor placed in a level or spawned at runtime.
Component A specialized node, a script attached to a node, or a reusable child scene. A Component attached to an Actor, with behavior implemented in Blueprint or C++.
Prefab A reusable scene that can be instanced, nested and inherited. A reusable Actor Blueprint or another asset designed for instancing.
Project window The project file system and imported resources. The Content Browser and its asset references.
Script Rewrite against Godot’s node, resource, input and signal APIs. Rebuild with Blueprints or C++; Unity C# and Bolt do not import directly.

Godot’s own migration guidance emphasizes that the GameObject/component model is different from its scene tree and nodes. Unreal uses levels, Actors, Components and the Content Browser. In both cases, moving files without redesigning these relationships produces a project that imports but does not behave correctly.

Choose Godot or Unreal before you export everything

Godot is a better fit when

  • You want a scene-and-node structure that makes reusable content explicit as files.
  • Your project is relatively small, data-driven or uses conventional rendering and gameplay systems.
  • You are prepared to rewrite scripts and reorganize every prefab-like object into scenes and nodes.

Unreal is a better fit when

  • Your team wants a level, Actor and Component workflow with a Content Browser.
  • You can support a Blueprint or C++ rebuild of gameplay and engine integrations.
  • Your assets are already available in interchange formats that Unreal documents, and you need its target platform or rendering features.

Risk indicators for either choice

  • A proprietary render pipeline, custom shader library or extensive editor tooling.
  • Native plugins, platform SDKs, online services or multiplayer code tied to Unity APIs.
  • Large numbers of serialized references, procedurally generated assets or undocumented save data.

Do not decide from the asset list alone. A project with thousands of ordinary meshes may be easier than a small project whose core feature is a Unity-only plugin.

Migration workflow: a staged rebuild

1. Inventory the Unity project and freeze it

Create a written inventory before changing files. Record the exact Unity version, packages, plugins, build targets, source-control revision, licenses, native integrations and external services. List every scene, prefab, script, shader, animation controller, save format, editor tool and platform-specific feature.

Tag each item as reusable source, convertible data, behavior to rewrite, or dependency requiring a replacement. Make a reproducible Unity build and stop adding features to the migration source. If a bug must be fixed for comparison, record the change in source control so the reference remains auditable.

2. Separate authored source from engine state

Collect original textures rather than only Unity-imported versions, source meshes rather than generated cache files, and original audio rather than platform-compressed output. Preserve fonts, videos, localization files and data tables in their authored formats. Keep the Unity project intact; do not use a bulk export as a substitute for a backup.

Document licenses and redistribution limits for every asset. A file that technically imports may still be unusable on a new platform if its license covers only the original build.

3. Select a representative vertical slice

Choose one playable scene that exercises the systems most likely to fail: rendering, input, animation, UI, audio, save/load and at least one external dependency. Include a normal gameplay path, not just a static showcase. The slice should be small enough to rebuild and large enough to expose coordinate, serialization and plugin problems.

Define acceptance checks before you start. Examples include reaching a known location, triggering an animation, changing a setting, saving, restarting, loading, hearing a specific sound and completing the scene on the target platform.

4. Create a clean destination project

Start with a new Godot or Unreal project. Establish folder names, asset naming, coordinate and unit conventions, render settings, input actions, collision layers, localization rules and build profiles before importing the full library. Do not drag the Unity project folder into the destination and hope the editor will infer the structure.

Set up source control and a repeatable import process at this point. A clean baseline makes it possible to distinguish an asset problem from a project-configuration problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Import and normalize a small asset set

Bring in only the assets required by the vertical slice. Re-export meshes or animations when the destination importer needs a different interchange option. For each asset, check:

  • World scale and axis orientation.
  • Pivot location, transforms and negative or non-uniform scale.
  • Normals, tangents, smoothing and material-slot order.
  • Texture color space, alpha mode, channel packing, mipmaps and compression.
  • Skeleton hierarchy, bind pose, animation root motion and clip timing.
  • Audio sample rate, looping, loudness, compression and streaming behavior.

Keep a conversion note for every deliberate change. If a texture is converted from a source color space or an animation is retargeted, record the reason and the expected visual or timing difference.

6. Translate the project structure

In Godot, turn each reusable prefab-like object into a scene. Choose a root node that matches its responsibility, attach scripts to the appropriate nodes and use child nodes for visuals, collision, audio and interaction. Use nested or inherited scenes for variants instead of copying large hierarchies.

In Unreal, map Unity scenes to levels, GameObjects to Actors and components to Actor Components or built-in Components. Organize imported and authored files in the Content Browser so references remain understandable. Decide which objects are placed in a level and which are spawned from a class or data asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do this translation deliberately. A one-to-one name match is not proof that two objects have equivalent lifecycle, ownership, update order or serialization behavior.

7. Rebuild behavior in dependency order

  1. Data model: Recreate configuration, definitions and runtime state in destination-native resources, data assets or documented files.
  2. Core loop: Implement the smallest playable update, win, lose and restart path.
  3. Input: Define actions and bindings in the destination project; do not assume Unity key names or device abstractions carry over.
  4. Movement and camera: Reproduce units, acceleration, gravity, collision response, damping and camera constraints, then tune against recorded gameplay.
  5. Interaction: Rebuild triggers, raycasts, pickup rules, state changes and event ordering.
  6. User interface: Recreate layout, focus, navigation, localization, scaling and accessibility behavior.
  7. Animation and audio: Rebuild state transitions, blend rules, events, cues and timing around the destination engine’s systems.
  8. AI: Port perception, navigation, decision state and failure handling rather than copying assumptions about update loops.
  9. Saves: Define a versioned schema, migration rules and corruption handling before accepting old saves.
  10. Networking and services: Reimplement authority, replication, authentication, analytics, achievements and platform calls with supported destination APIs.
  11. Editor tooling: Replace inspectors, custom windows, importers and build automation with destination-engine tools or external scripts.

Unity C# scripts and Bolt scripting files cannot be directly exported from Unity and imported to Unreal. Unreal behavior must be rebuilt in Blueprints or C++. Godot likewise requires scripts rewritten against its APIs; copying C# source without changing node access, signals, resources and lifecycle assumptions is not a migration.

8. Recreate materials and shaders

Material names and texture slots do not guarantee equivalent output. Rebuild each material using the destination renderer’s inputs, then compare roughness, metallic response, normal strength, emission, transparency, cutoff and parallax behavior. Custom shaders must be rewritten; even when the mathematical effect is similar, coordinate spaces, lighting inputs and render passes can differ.

Reproduce lighting intentionally. Check exposure, tone mapping, shadow resolution, reflection sources, baked data, probes, fog and post-processing. A scene that looks correct in an unlit editor preview has not passed a rendering comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Validate continuously

Run the same scripted path in Unity and the destination build at each milestone. Capture reference screenshots or video at defined camera positions, and record measurable checks such as load completion, save restoration, collision outcome, animation timing, audio trigger and frame-time budget.

  • Transforms: Compare position, rotation, scale, pivots and parent relationships.
  • Physics: Check colliders, layers, materials, gravity, timestep assumptions and deterministic outcomes where required.
  • Animation: Check retargeting, root motion, blend transitions, event timing and loop seams.
  • Input: Test keyboard, mouse, controller, touch or other supported devices, including rebinding and focus loss.
  • UI: Test resolution changes, aspect ratios, text overflow, controller navigation, localization and accessibility settings.
  • Audio: Check attenuation, spatialization, mixer or bus routing, pauses, loops and platform output.
  • Persistence: Test new saves, existing-save conversion, missing fields, corrupted files and interrupted writes.
  • Performance: Measure frame time, memory, loading, shader compilation and asset streaming in a packaged build, not only in the editor.
  • Packaging: Build every supported target and verify permissions, signing, plugins, input devices and platform services.

10. Cut over only after acceptance

Keep the Unity build reproducible until the destination project passes the acceptance suite for the vertical slice and the systems that depend on it. Archive the Unity source, lock the final reference revision and document every intentional behavior change. A cutover is a controlled release decision, not the moment the first imported model appears in the new editor.

Godot-specific migration considerations

Reorganize around scenes and nodes

Godot scenes are reusable files, so decide which parts of a Unity prefab become a scene boundary. A character might use a root node for movement, child nodes for the mesh and camera, a collision node for physics and an audio node for sounds. Keep responsibilities visible in the tree and avoid recreating a hidden monolithic component that is difficult to instance or inherit.

Replace Unity lifecycle and messaging

Map initialization, per-frame updates, physics updates, destruction and serialized fields to Godot’s lifecycle and resource model. Replace Unity events and component lookups with Godot signals, node references and explicit ownership. Test ordering when multiple nodes react to the same event; equivalent names do not imply equivalent execution order.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audit importers and plugins

Inspect every imported material, animation and texture in Godot rather than assuming defaults match Unity. Unity packages and native SDKs generally need a Godot-specific replacement or a custom port. Treat an unavailable plugin as a feature-rebuild task and include its failure modes in the vertical slice.

Unreal-specific migration considerations

Use levels, Actors and Components intentionally

Decide whether a Unity scene becomes one Unreal level or a set of levels and sublevels. Convert reusable GameObjects into Actor classes or Blueprint assets, and use Components for capabilities that should be shared. Place only level-specific instances in a level; keep reusable behavior in classes and data assets.

Choose Blueprint, C++ or both

Blueprints can express gameplay and tools visually, while C++ is appropriate for systems that need native integration, performance control or shared framework code. The choice is a redesign decision, not an automatic translation of C# syntax. Define ownership, tick behavior, replication and save serialization explicitly.

Follow documented interchange paths

Use supported FBX, OBJ, USD and animation interchange paths for the asset type involved, then inspect skeletons, materials, collision and animation results in the Content Browser. Reimporting after changing source files can alter generated data, so keep source exports and import settings under version control where practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

“The model imported, so the migration worked”

Import success proves only that a file was readable. If the mesh has the wrong scale, missing materials or a flipped axis, fix the export and normalization settings before building more systems. Add the corrected asset to the vertical-slice acceptance test.

Everything was bulk-imported and the project is unmanageable

Delete the destination project’s generated content, create a clean baseline and import only the slice. Re-establish folder conventions and naming before expanding. A smaller, known-good import is faster to diagnose than thousands of ambiguous assets.

Scripts compile but gameplay differs

Compilation says nothing about lifecycle, physics or event ordering. Compare one deterministic gameplay path, log state transitions and rebuild the system in dependency order. Treat movement, input, saves and networking as separate ports with separate tests.

Materials look wrong despite identical textures

Check color space, channel packing, normal-map interpretation, roughness and metallic conventions, then rebuild the shader or material graph. Verify lighting and post-processing separately so a lighting mismatch is not mistaken for a texture error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Old saves do not load

Do not assume Unity’s serialized scene or save representation is readable by the destination engine. Define a neutral, versioned save schema, write a converter for the fields you can identify and provide a clear fallback when a save is incomplete or corrupted. Test interrupted writes and missing-version fields.

A Unity package or native plugin has no equivalent

Classify the dependency’s player-facing contract: input, rendering, online service, editor workflow or build step. Select a destination-native replacement, port the required interface or remove the feature deliberately. Record the resulting behavior change and test the failure path.

Vertical-slice acceptance checklist

  • The selected scene opens in a packaged destination build.
  • A player can complete the intended gameplay path with supported input devices.
  • Transforms, collisions, animation timing, camera behavior and audio cues meet the defined reference checks.
  • UI scales, navigates and localizes correctly at target resolutions.
  • Save, restart and load preserve the required state, including the documented conversion behavior.
  • External services and platform integrations either work through supported APIs or have an explicitly tested fallback.
  • Frame time, memory, loading and shader behavior are measured in the packaged build.
  • Known differences are documented and approved before more content is migrated.

How to decide whether to continue, narrow scope or stop

After the slice, classify the remaining work by dependency rather than by file count. A large set of independent textures may be routine, while one unsupported networking SDK can determine the entire schedule. Continue when the destination reproduces the core loop and the unresolved items have clear replacement paths. Narrow scope when optional plugins, editor tools or cosmetic effects dominate the risk. Stop or reconsider the target engine when the slice exposes fundamental constraints that cannot meet the project’s platform, rendering, networking or licensing requirements.

The most defensible migration result is not a project containing every original file. It is a destination build whose critical behavior, content and performance have been verified, with every intentional difference understood and documented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Unity C# scripts be imported directly into Godot or Unreal?

No. Godot requires scripts rewritten against its node, resource, input and signal APIs. Unreal does not directly import Unity C# or Bolt files; rebuild behavior in Blueprints, C++ or both.

Can I use a .unitypackage to move a project to another engine?

No. A .unitypackage is a Unity distribution container. Export original meshes, textures, audio, fonts, videos and authored data separately, then import or convert those source files in the destination engine.

What should I migrate first?

Build a representative vertical slice containing rendering, input, animation, UI, audio, save/load and one external dependency. It reveals structural and integration risks before you spend effort on the whole project.

Are Unity scenes and prefabs reusable in Godot or Unreal?

Their authored content can guide the rebuild, but the scene and prefab files themselves are engine-specific. Recreate them as Godot scenes and nodes or as Unreal levels, Actors and Components.
