A Joomla migration has two separate payloads: the website files and the database that stores its content. Move both to a compatible, secured VPS, edit the destination settings in configuration.php, test the copy on a temporary address, and only then change DNS. A tested off-site backup and a rollback plan are what make the process safe.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
For little or no visible downtime, keep the old site online while you copy files and perform an initial database export. Freeze or briefly stop writes for a final database backup, switch DNS, and leave the old server intact and read-only until the new site has passed production checks.

Inventory the source installation
- Joomla version, PHP version, database engine and version, and the enabled PHP extensions.
- Every extension, plugin, template, language pack, and its license or activation requirement.
- Web-server features such as URL rewriting, redirects, custom headers, and document-root paths.
- Media and other user-uploaded directories, including files outside the normal Joomla tree.
- Cron jobs, queue workers, command-line scripts, and scheduled Joomla tasks. Record their exact commands, user accounts, and schedules.
- SSL certificates, private keys or certificate-management method, DNS records, subdomains, and mail-related DNS records.
- SMTP credentials, transactional-mail settings, payment callbacks, webhooks, analytics endpoints, and any third-party IP allowlists.
- Database name, username, host, table prefix, character set, collation, and approximate database size.
Save this inventory in a location that is not on either server. It becomes your acceptance checklist after the cutover.

Choose a maintenance and write-freeze window
Copying files while visitors upload images is usually harmless if you repeat the changed files later, but copying a database while orders, comments, registrations, or form submissions are changing can produce an inconsistent result. Decide whether the final database export will run with Joomla in maintenance mode, with application writes disabled, or during a scheduled quiet period. State who can approve the DNS change and who can roll it back.
2. Create and test an off-site backup
Joomla’s security checklist says: “You should at all times be able to return your site to a previous working state through regular use of a strong, off-site backup and recovery process.” Keep at least one backup away from both the old and new VPS. A snapshot that exists only on the source server is not a rollback plan if that server or its disk fails.
Recommended Free Tools
Back up both payloads
- Archive the complete Joomla document root, including
administrator, components, images, media, plugins, templates, and any custom directories. - Export the complete database, not just selected content tables. Include the table structure, data, triggers, and routines when the installation uses them.
- Save
configuration.phpseparately, but protect the copy because it contains database credentials. - Record checksums or archive sizes so you can detect a truncated transfer.
Prove that the backup restores
Restore the archive and database to an isolated test location, or at minimum validate the archive and import the database into a disposable database. Confirm that the files open, the SQL import completes without errors, and representative Joomla tables contain rows. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not evidence.
3. Build a compatible, hardened VPS
Match the Joomla release and its extensions to the PHP and database versions available on the new VPS. Do not select the newest PHP release automatically: an old Joomla version or an abandoned extension may not support it. Conversely, retaining an obsolete PHP version can create security and support problems. Check the requirements for the exact Joomla release and test the complete extension set together.

Prepare the operating environment
- Create a non-root administrative account and use SSH keys where possible. Restrict direct root login and expose only the ports you need.
- Install the web server, the required PHP version and modules, and the matching database engine. Enable HTTPS before production cutover.
- Create a dedicated database and a least-privilege database user. Grant that user access to the Joomla database only; do not reuse a server-wide administrative account.
- Configure the virtual host, document root, request limits, upload limits, and URL-rewriting rules required by the site.
- Set file ownership so the web process can write only where Joomla needs to write, such as cache, logs, temporary files, and upload directories. Avoid making the whole site world-writable.
- Configure system time, log rotation, firewall rules, malware monitoring, and VPS backups or snapshots.
A hosting change can expose incompatibilities that were hidden on the old server. Review PHP and web-server error logs as soon as the first test request reaches the new VPS.
4. Transfer the Joomla files
Choose a transfer method that fits the archive size, your access level, and the need to preserve permissions. Whichever method you use, compare the source and destination file counts and inspect the transfer log.
| Method | Best use | Checks and limitations |
|---|---|---|
SSH with rsync |
Large sites when both VPS accounts permit SSH | Can resume interrupted transfers and report changed files; confirm ownership, permissions, symbolic links, and exclusions. |
| SFTP or FTP | Restricted hosting access or an operator who needs a graphical client | Use SFTP when available. Verify that hidden files such as .htaccess are included and that binary files are not converted. |
| Archive and restore | Sites already packaged for a controlled restore | Check archive integrity, available disk space, extraction limits, and the resulting owner and mode of every directory. |
Preserve what Joomla needs
- Include hidden files, especially rewrite rules and environment-specific files.
- Do not omit the
administratordirectory, extensions, templates, language files, or media directories. - Preserve symbolic links only when you understand their targets on the new VPS; repair links that point to old absolute paths.
- After extraction, set ownership and permissions deliberately rather than inheriting unsafe permissions from an archive.
- Run a second synchronization immediately before cutover if the source remained writable during the first copy.
5. Export and import the database
Export the source database
Use the database command-line tools or a control-panel utility such as phpMyAdmin. Joomla’s official copying procedure documents phpMyAdmin export and import. Select the complete Joomla database, include its structure and data, and save the dump outside the public web root. For a large database, a command-line dump is generally less likely to hit browser timeouts than a web form.
Create the destination database
Create an empty database with the character set and collation expected by the source installation, then create the dedicated database user and grant it the required privileges. Record the database host exactly as the new PHP process will reach it: it may be a local socket, localhost, an IP address, or a separate database hostname.

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Import and verify
- Import the dump into the empty destination database and watch for errors rather than assuming a completed progress bar means success.
- Check that the Joomla table prefix is unchanged. A prefix mismatch makes a healthy database appear empty to Joomla.
- Compare row counts for representative content, user, session, extension, and asset tables with the source.
- Confirm that the database character set preserves accented characters and other non-ASCII content.
- Remove temporary SQL dumps from any web-accessible directory after verification.
6. Edit configuration.php for the new VPS
Joomla’s configuration file contains destination-specific database and filesystem settings. Edit the copy on the new server only after the files and database are in place, and keep the original source copy available for rollback.
Values that commonly change
$host,$user,$password, and$dbfor the new database connection.$dbprefixif, and only if, you intentionally changed the table prefix during a controlled conversion. In a normal migration it should remain the source prefix.$log_pathand$tmp_pathwhen the filesystem layout changed.- Any cache, session, or custom absolute paths used by extensions.
- Mail transport settings if the VPS uses a different SMTP host, port, encryption mode, or sender policy.
Keep $live_site and $cookie_domain empty unless this deployment specifically requires them. Hard-coding an old domain or an incorrect cookie scope can cause redirect loops, failed administrator logins, or cookies that are sent to the wrong host.
Check path access before testing extensions
Make sure the PHP process can read the Joomla tree and write to the directories represented by $log_path and $tmp_path. Incorrect paths can leave the front end looking normal while extension installation, updates, cache clearing, or logging fails. Test a harmless cache clear and inspect the resulting log file before enabling production traffic.
7. Use an archive workflow when it fits
Joomla documents Akeeba Backup as producing a .jpa archive that contains folders, files, database files, and an installer. On the new VPS, the restore process asks for the destination database details. This approach can reduce the number of separate file and database transfer steps, but it does not remove the need for a compatible PHP/database environment, correct permissions, and a tested restore.

Archive workflow
- Create the archive on the source and download it to an off-site location as well as the destination VPS.
- Verify that the archive is complete and that the new VPS has enough free space for both the archive and its extracted contents.
- Place the archive and its installer in a private staging location, not a publicly browsable directory.
- Run the installer, enter the new database host, name, user, password, and prefix, and complete the file restoration.
- Delete installer and temporary archive files when the tool instructs you to do so.
- Edit or confirm destination paths, then perform the same staging and functional tests as a manual migration.
| Decision axis | Manual files plus database | Archive tool |
|---|---|---|
| SSH and database control | Maximum control over transfer, dump format, permissions, and repeatable commands. | More guided; the tool controls much of the packaging and restore sequence. |
| Different destination path | Paths are explicit and can be adjusted during extraction and configuration editing. | The installer can adapt paths, but you still must verify every generated setting. |
| Large files and timeouts | Resumable SSH transfers and command-line database tools avoid browser limits. | Convenient when the archive completes; web-based packaging or extraction can hit resource limits. |
| Verification and rollback | Separate file and database checks make failures easier to isolate. | One archive simplifies handling, but a corrupt archive can affect the whole restore; keep an independent backup. |
| Version compatibility | You control the exact PHP, database, and Joomla combination. | The archive still requires a compatible Joomla/PHP combination and a successful installer run. |
| Testing before DNS | Easy to repeat file/database imports in a disposable staging site. | Easy to repeat if the archive is retained and the installer can run in an isolated host. |
8. Stage the copy before changing DNS
Do not use the DNS change as your first test. Give the new VPS a temporary hostname, a restricted staging URL, or a hosts-file override on your own computer. A hosts-file override lets you resolve the real domain to the new IP without sending public visitors there. Protect staging with access controls and prevent search indexing.
Functional test checklist
- Open representative front-end pages, category and article views, contact forms, search, and any custom components.
- Sign in to the administrator, edit a test article, upload a test image, clear cache, and remove the test data afterward.
- Check menus, aliases, canonical links, redirects, pagination, and URL rewriting. Test both existing URLs and deliberately invalid URLs.
- Inspect media, thumbnails, downloadable files, template assets, and paths containing spaces or non-ASCII characters.
- Submit forms and verify outbound mail, sender addresses, SPF/DKIM-related behavior, and bounce handling.
- Run scheduled jobs manually, then verify their cron schedules and execution users on the new VPS. Disable duplicate jobs on the old server before production cutover.
- Exercise payment notifications, webhooks, API callbacks, and IP allowlists with the provider’s test mode where available.
- Install or update a noncritical extension in staging to confirm that
$tmp_path,$log_path, permissions, and outbound connections work. - Test HTTPS, certificate chains, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, secure cookies, mixed-content warnings, and any reverse-proxy headers.
- Review PHP, web-server, database, Joomla, and cron logs while carrying out these tests.
Compare representative database records and uploaded assets with the source rather than relying only on a successful home-page load. A Joomla front end can appear healthy while an administrator path, scheduled task, or extension callback is broken.
9. Cut over with a short, controlled write freeze
- Lower the DNS TTL ahead of the move when practical. Existing resolvers may still cache the previous value until their current TTL expires.
- Announce the maintenance window if users can create content, accounts, orders, or submissions.
- Put the source site into maintenance mode or otherwise stop writes. Disable source cron jobs that could create or modify data.
- Take the final database backup and import it into the already tested destination. Synchronize files changed since the first transfer.
- Re-run the critical smoke tests on the destination using the final database state.
- Update the authoritative DNS records to the new VPS address. Do not shut down the old VPS yet.
- Watch DNS resolution from more than one network, then monitor access logs, PHP errors, database connections, mail queues, jobs, and uptime.
- Keep the old server intact and read-only until the new site is confirmed stable. Do not allow late writes on the old copy that would be lost if you later need to revert.
When a material defect appears, revert DNS to the old server, keep the new site out of service, and restore the last known-good backup before attempting another cutover. Document which writes occurred during the interval so you can reconcile them rather than silently losing data.
10. Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often
Database connection errors
Recheck the host, database name, username, password, port, and grants in configuration.php. Test the credentials from the VPS with the same database client and network path used by PHP. Confirm that the required PHP database driver is installed and that the imported database is not empty.
Best Value
Blank page or HTTP 500
Read the PHP and web-server error logs first. A PHP-version mismatch, missing extension, incompatible plugin, exhausted memory limit, or incorrect file ownership is more useful to diagnose from the log than from the browser symptom. Disable the offending extension from the administrator or database only as a controlled recovery step, then fix compatibility rather than leaving it disabled blindly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Extension installation or updates fail
Check that $tmp_path and $log_path point to real directories writable by the PHP process. Verify available disk space, outbound HTTPS access, and permissions on the extension and cache directories.
Images or downloads are missing
Confirm that every media directory was transferred, including files outside the document root. Check case-sensitive path differences, symbolic-link targets, web-server access rules, and ownership. Compare a missing asset’s path with the source database record and the actual destination filename.
SEF URLs return 404
Verify that the destination virtual host allows URL rewriting, that the Joomla rewrite file was transferred, and that the web server has the required module or configuration. Test the home page and a known article URL separately to distinguish a rewrite problem from a missing database route.
Administrator login loops or cookies fail
Remove stale browser cookies, confirm HTTPS and proxy headers, and review $live_site and $cookie_domain. Both should normally be empty unless the deployment needs explicit values. An old domain or an overbroad cookie domain can make the administrator session appear to vanish immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMail, webhooks, or cron jobs stop
Recreate credentials and firewall allowlists for the new VPS, verify the sending hostname and DNS records, and run each job manually under its production user. Check that callback URLs resolve to the new address and that the old server is no longer running duplicate jobs.
11. Keep the migration reversible
After DNS has moved, preserve the old VPS, its final database backup, the file archive, and the migration inventory for a defined retention period. Keep credentials secured and limit the old server to read-only or private access. Once monitoring shows stable traffic, successful jobs, functioning mail and callbacks, and no unexplained errors, take a fresh backup of the new production site and record the final configuration. This closes the migration loop and gives you a clean recovery point for the next change.
