What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To combine videos in portrait mode without losing important content, create the project on a vertical 9:16 canvas first, add the clips in timeline order, and decide how every non-portrait clip should be framed. Then trim, reframe, preview the complete sequence, and export only after the composition looks correct.
CapCut provides phone-first combine workflows on iPhone and Android, iMovie can merge clips from an iPhone Photo Library, and Adobe Premiere mobile offers an explicit aspect-ratio selector plus Auto Reframe for subject-aware adjustments. The same basic process works in each editor, but the controls for mismatched footage and export differ.

What combining videos in portrait mode actually involves
Portrait video is taller than it is wide. A common vertical canvas is 9:16, the ratio used by Adobe Premiere mobile’s documented project setup. Combining clips is not simply placing files one after another: the editor must render every clip inside one project canvas. If one source is landscape, square, or recorded at another size, the editor has to crop it, fit it with empty space, add a background treatment, or reframe it.

If you edit first on a landscape canvas and switch to vertical later, faces, captions, logos, and other edge details may move outside the visible area. A portrait project also lets you judge each clip as it will appear in the final sequence rather than relying on the original file’s orientation.

Which app should you use?
| Editor | Documented device route | Portrait-canvas controls | Reframing | Mixed-footage treatment | Timeline and export |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CapCut | iPhone and Android | Portrait project workflow is available; the cited guides do not state a specific ratio selector label. | Manual framing; automatic subject tracking is not stated in the cited combine guides. | Choose how each clip fits the canvas in the editor. | Combine clips on a timeline, then export; exact controls vary by app version. |
| iMovie | iPhone Photo Library | The cited Apple workflow documents merging clips, but does not specify a separate 9:16 project selector. | Manual adjustment within iMovie’s editing controls. | Review the portrait result and adjust clips that do not match. | Select multiple videos, place them in a movie timeline, trim, preview, and save or share. |
| Adobe Premiere mobile | Mobile workflow | Project setup includes selectable aspect ratios, including 9:16. | Auto Reframe analyzes the main subject and adjusts framing over time; review it manually. | Automatic black or blurred fill is documented for mismatched clips, alongside manual framing choices. | Timeline editing and export controls are built into the mobile workflow. |
Choose CapCut when you want a direct phone workflow on either major mobile platform. Choose iMovie when your clips are already in an iPhone Photo Library and you prefer Apple’s native editor. Choose Premiere mobile when an explicit ratio choice or subject-aware Auto Reframe is important. The cited documentation does not establish identical controls, export presets, or feature availability across every app version and region, so check the labels shown on your device.
Prepare your clips before editing
- Collect the source files: Keep the original clips in the device’s Photos or gallery app so the editor can import them without an extra conversion step.
- Decide the story order: A timeline follows the order in which clips are placed. Put the opening shot first and group related shots before adding transitions.
- Note orientation changes: Mark landscape, square, and portrait clips before editing. Mixed orientation is the main reason a merged video develops unexpected bars or crops.
- Identify protected details: Faces, subtitles, on-screen labels, product edges, and logos need extra space from the top, bottom, and side boundaries.
- Keep a clean master: Edit from the original files rather than repeatedly exporting and re-importing compressed copies.
Step-by-step: merge clips on a portrait canvas
1. Create a new project and select the vertical ratio
- Open the editor and choose the command for a new project or movie.
- Set the project canvas to a portrait ratio before arranging final framing. In Adobe Premiere mobile, select the documented 9:16 aspect ratio; other editors may present portrait as a vertical preset rather than showing the numbers.
- Confirm that the preview window is taller than it is wide. If it is still landscape, change the project setting before importing or committing to crops.
The canvas controls the shape of the exported sequence. It does not rotate the source files or guarantee that every shot will fill the frame, so inspect each clip after import.
2. Import the videos and put them in sequence
- Use the editor’s import or add-media control.
- Select the clips from the Photo Library or device gallery. iMovie’s documented route allows multiple videos to be selected from an iPhone Photo Library; CapCut documents equivalent iPhone and Android selection workflows.
- Add the selected clips to the timeline in the desired order. If the app inserts them in capture-date order, drag them into the intended sequence.
- Play the timeline once before making detailed cuts. This exposes duplicate shots, an incorrectly oriented file, or a clip that imported without its expected audio.
3. Trim the starts and ends
- Tap or select the first clip and move its start handle until the action begins cleanly.
- Move the end handle to remove camera movement, a hand reaching for the stop button, or a silent pause after the take.
- Repeat for every clip. Trim before adding elaborate transitions so transition timing follows the final shot lengths.
- Play across each cut. A cut that looks acceptable while paused can feel abrupt when motion or speech is involved.
4. Resolve every clip that does not match the portrait frame
For each landscape, square, or differently sized clip, choose one treatment deliberately:

- Crop to fill: Enlarge the clip until the portrait canvas is covered. This removes content from the sides of landscape footage, so keep the subject near the center or reposition it.
- Fit with side bars: Keep the complete image and accept empty space on the sides. This preserves information but creates a different visual rhythm from full-frame portrait shots.
- Use a background treatment: Put a black or blurred version of the clip behind the fitted image. Adobe documents automatic black or blurred fill for mismatched footage. The result fills the canvas while retaining more of the original image in front.
- Reframe manually: Move and scale the image so the important subject remains visible. Check the entire duration, not just the first frame, because a person can walk out of the chosen area.
Do not apply one choice blindly to every clip. A talking-head shot may need a tight crop, while a wide group scene may be more readable with the full image and a background treatment.
5. Reframe the subject and protect important details
Portrait framing gives you less horizontal room than landscape footage. Place faces, captions, and essential objects away from the crop edges. Keep checking the top and bottom as well: interface overlays on social platforms can cover content close to those boundaries.
Adobe Premiere mobile’s Auto Reframe analyzes the main subject and adjusts framing over time to match the selected project ratio. Use it as a starting point, then watch the entire clip and correct any moment where the subject is missed, a second person becomes the focus, or the motion feels unstable. Automatic analysis is not a substitute for a visual check.

6. Preview the complete sequence in portrait orientation
- Play from the beginning rather than checking isolated clips only.
- Watch every transition for an unintended orientation change or a brief flash of a different canvas shape.
- Look specifically at faces, captions, hands, and objects near crop edges.
- Check that the audio continues naturally across cuts and that a trimmed clip has not removed the first word or final beat.
- Pause on any shot that appears letterboxed or unexpectedly zoomed, then adjust its fit or crop before exporting.
7. Export after the composition is correct
- Open the editor’s export, save, or share control only after the portrait preview is satisfactory.
- Choose a preset appropriate for the destination and the original footage. Keep the project’s portrait orientation; changing an export orientation setting can reintroduce unwanted bars or rotation.
- Use the available quality, frame-rate, and file-format controls when the destination requires them. The cited documentation does not establish one universal preset for all devices or services.
- Wait for the export to finish, then open the saved file outside the editor. Confirm that it plays vertically, includes every clip, and retains captions and important edges.
CapCut: phone-first instructions
iPhone
- Open CapCut and start a new project.
- Select the videos from the iPhone’s media library and add them to the timeline.
- Arrange the clips, trim their starts and ends, and inspect each one in the portrait preview.
- For any landscape or square shot, choose whether to crop, fit, or use a background treatment, then reposition the subject if needed.
- Preview the whole sequence and use the export control when the framing and order are correct.
The official iPhone workflow documents combining videos, but the exact names and locations of ratio, fit, and export options can change as the app is updated. If the project opens in a different canvas shape, set its format to a vertical preset before making final crops.
Recommended Free Tools
Android
- Open CapCut and create a new project.
- Select the source videos from the device gallery and add them in the intended order.
- Trim each clip and inspect the portrait preview after every framing change.
- Resolve mismatched footage with a deliberate crop, fit, or background choice.
- Play the complete timeline, then export and verify the resulting file in the Android gallery.
Android gallery permissions, storage locations, and menu labels vary by device. If a clip is missing, confirm that CapCut has permission to access the folder where the original was saved before converting or moving the file.
iMovie: merge clips from an iPhone Photo Library
- Open iMovie and create a new movie project.
- Choose the videos from the iPhone Photo Library. Apple’s documented workflow supports selecting multiple videos for one movie.
- Add the selection to the timeline and drag clips into the required order.
- Trim unwanted beginnings and endings, then inspect the portrait framing of every shot.
- Adjust clips that do not fit the project’s vertical presentation. Preserve the full image when the subject would be cut off, or crop only when the important action remains visible.
- Preview the complete movie and use iMovie’s save or share control to create the finished file.
Because the cited iMovie instructions focus on selecting and merging clips rather than documenting a 9:16 project selector, confirm the orientation in the preview and in the saved file. If the result is not consistently vertical, revisit the project’s framing controls before sharing.

Adobe Premiere mobile: explicit ratio and Auto Reframe
- Start a project and open its aspect-ratio choices.
- Select 9:16 for a vertical portrait canvas.
- Import the clips and place them on the timeline in order.
- Trim the clips and resolve mismatched footage. Adobe documents automatic black or blurred fill as options when source and project dimensions differ.
- Apply Auto Reframe to footage that needs subject tracking. Let the analysis finish, then review the full clip manually.
- Correct any missed face, drifting subject, or awkward crop, and check captions near the boundaries.
- Preview the full sequence and use the mobile export controls once the composition is approved.
Auto Reframe is most useful when the subject moves through a shot, but it can choose the wrong focal point in a group or busy scene. Treat its result as an editable proposal, not a guaranteed final crop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to handle mixed portrait and landscape footage
Use crop-to-fill when the subject is central
Crop-to-fill creates a consistent full-screen portrait sequence. It works best for a centered speaker, a close-up, or footage where the sides contain little useful information. Before accepting the crop, scan the entire shot for a second person, a sign, or an object that may be removed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use fit or bars when the complete scene matters
Fitting the whole image protects wide compositions and group scenes. Side bars are intentional empty space, not a technical failure. They may be preferable to cutting off people or text, especially when the original shot contains information at both sides.

Use black or blurred fill for a unified background
A background treatment fills the portrait canvas while keeping the source image visible. Black fill is neutral and predictable; blur can make the empty area feel less stark but may reduce clarity behind the subject. Adobe’s documented workflow includes automatic black or blurred fill for mismatched clips.
Use subject-aware reframing for moving action
When a person or object travels horizontally, a static crop can lose it. Auto Reframe can follow a detected main subject in Adobe Premiere mobile. Review every movement and transition because tracking may change the focal point or leave a second subject outside the frame.
Quick Recap
Quality checks before you share
- Orientation: The exported file opens vertically in a normal media player, not merely inside the editor preview.
- Continuity: There is no accidental landscape frame, rotation, or flash between portrait clips.
- Safe framing: Faces, subtitles, logos, and key action remain visible throughout each crop and reframe.
- Timing: Trims remove dead air without cutting spoken words, musical beats, or essential movement.
- Transitions: Effects do not expose a mismatched canvas or move text outside the visible area.
- Audio: Dialogue and ambient sound continue at sensible levels from one clip to the next.
- File integrity: The saved file contains the complete sequence and plays from start to finish after export.
Troubleshooting common portrait-merging problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Important content is cut off. | A landscape clip was enlarged to fill the 9:16 canvas. | Switch that clip to fit, add a black or blurred background, or reposition the crop around the subject. |
| Black or empty side areas appear. | The full source image was fitted inside a taller canvas. | Keep the bars if preserving the full scene matters, or replace them with a documented background treatment. |
| The subject leaves the frame. | A static crop does not follow movement, or Auto Reframe chose the wrong subject. | Reposition the clip over time where the editor allows it, or rerun and manually correct Auto Reframe’s result. |
| One shot turns sideways. | The source orientation or project interpretation differs from the other clips. | Check the clip’s orientation in the portrait preview, rotate it if the editor provides that control, and preview the cut again. |
| Captions are clipped. | Text was placed near an edge before the portrait crop was finalized. | Move captions inward and inspect them at full-sequence playback, not only on a paused frame. |
| The export looks different from the preview. | An export orientation, fit, or quality choice changed the composition. | Reopen the export settings, keep the portrait project orientation, export again, and test the saved file outside the editor. |
| A video is missing from the import list. | The editor lacks permission or the file is stored in an unindexed location. | Grant Photos or gallery access, confirm the file opens in the device’s media app, and then import it again. |
