Chrome keeps profile data separate. To consolidate selected items, use Chrome Sync for data associated with the same Google Account, or export and import bookmarks. These options do not guarantee a complete merge of two profiles or two Google Accounts.
What “merging” Chrome profiles means
A Chrome profile is a separate browser environment, with its own bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings. A Google Account is different: Chrome can save selected information to an account through Sync and make it available on devices signed in to that account. Signing in to a Google website alone does not establish that local profile data has synced. Google’s profile guide and its explanation of Chrome sign-in describe these as distinct concepts.

In practice, choose the route that matches the data you need. Sync is for selected data associated with the same Google Account; bookmark export and import is a manual option for bookmarks. Google’s guidance does not document a procedure to fully combine two local profiles or merge the contents of two Google Accounts.
Choose a transfer method
| What you need | Best-fit method | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Selected data already associated with one Google Account | Sign in to that account in the destination profile and configure Chrome Sync. | This makes selected account data available; it is not a merge of separate accounts or a guarantee that all local profile data transfers. |
| Bookmarks from another profile | Export bookmarks from the source profile as an HTML file, then import that file into the destination. | Inspect the destination’s bookmark folders afterward; this method transfers bookmarks, not a whole profile. |
Use Chrome Sync for data tied to the same Google Account
Sign in from the destination profile
- Open Chrome in the profile you want to keep and sign in to Chrome with the Google Account that has the data you want available.
- Review the Sync options and select the data categories you want saved. Google lists bookmarks, passwords, payment information, extensions, web apps, and settings among the categories users can save. History and open tabs have separate settings. See Google’s instructions for getting Chrome data on your devices.
- If history or tabs matter, check that those categories are enabled in Chrome settings. Do not assume that signing in alone enabled every category.
- Allow Sync to update, then check the destination profile for the specific bookmarks, passwords, history, tabs, extensions, or settings you need.
Check for a custom Sync passphrase
If the account uses a custom Sync passphrase, you will need it on the destination device. Google also documents a limitation: when a custom passphrase is in use, only addresses entered in the address bar sync as history. Review Google’s Sync guidance before relying on Sync for browsing history.

When Sync is not a profile merger
Sync is an account-based route, not a tool for combining two Google Accounts. It also does not promise to transfer every local item, cookie, or extension’s private data. If the information you need exists only in another local profile or belongs to a different account, verify what is available in the destination and use a supported, category-specific transfer where one is documented.
Transfer bookmarks with an HTML file
Chrome supports exporting bookmarks to an HTML file and importing that file into another profile. This is useful when Sync is not the right route or when you want to move bookmarks between profiles or computers. Follow Google’s bookmark import and export instructions.

- In the source profile, open Bookmark Manager and use its menu to export bookmarks. Save the resulting HTML file somewhere you can locate.
- In the destination profile, open the bookmark import flow and select the exported HTML file.
- Review the destination’s bookmarks and folders. If it already had bookmarks, inspect how the imported folders are organized and remove any unwanted duplicates manually.
For a transfer between computers, you can carry the exported HTML file on a USB flash drive. The file contains the exported bookmarks; it does not carry passwords, history, extensions, or the rest of the Chrome profile.
Verify everything before deleting the old profile
Keep the source profile until you have checked the destination for the data that matters to you. Check bookmarks, passwords, history, tabs, extensions, and settings individually; a successful sign-in or bookmark import does not verify the other categories. Google’s documentation does not establish that every kind of local state or extension-specific data transfers.

If Chrome is managed by an employer or school, administrator controls may affect sign-in or Sync. Follow your organization’s policy and ask its administrator before moving work or school browser data.
