To get products approved and displayed, provide a relevant, reachable primary image in the image_link attribute, keep the product clearly visible without promotional text or watermarks, and supply technically valid files. Build new assets to Google’s quality guidance rather than merely the present minimum, because a higher minimum is scheduled for 2027.
The practical process is straightforward: prepare a clean main image, verify dimensions and file limits, test that Googlebot can fetch the raw file, add useful supplementary images, preserve AI-origin metadata when applicable, then monitor Products → Needs attention until any image issue clears.

Know which image standard applies today
Google Merchant Center has three different concepts that are often confused: the minimum needed for eligibility, the quality level Google recommends, and a future minimum that has already been announced. Treating them as the same can lead either to unnecessary rework or to images that technically pass but look poor in product results.

These figures apply to the image file submitted for the item. A large source file can still fail if its URL is inaccessible, its subject is wrong, or the image contains prohibited text. Conversely, an image that meets the current minimum can still produce a low-quality warning or a poor customer experience.

Build a compliant primary image
Use image_link for the advertised product
Every item should have one primary URL in the image_link attribute. The file at that address must show the product that the listing actually advertises. A missing URL, broken file, generic stock placeholder, or image of a different variant can prevent approval or trigger an incorrect-value issue.
Match the image to the submitted attributes. If a listing describes a blue, patterned item, the image being served should show that same color and pattern. This matters especially while Google evaluates an image replacement: an older approved image may continue to appear during the review period, so related attributes must remain accurate for the image customers can still see.
Make the product recognizable at a glance
Use a crisp, focused, well-lit photograph or render in which the product is easy to identify. A solid white or light-neutral background is recommended for a main image because it separates the item from the page and keeps the silhouette clear. A staged or lifestyle scene can also work when the advertised product remains unmistakable and is not obscured by props.
Google recommends that the product occupy roughly 75% to 90% of the frame without cutting off its silhouette. This is a best practice, not a universal pixel or cropping rule. Leave enough margin to show the entire item, including handles, attachments, or other parts that are part of what the buyer receives.

Choose the right view for the main image
- Show the standard sellable configuration, not an optional accessory presented as though it were included.
- Use a front or three-quarter angle that exposes the product’s shape and important controls.
- Remove packaging, hands, clutter, and decorative elements unless they are integral to the product.
- For multipacks or bundles, show the complete quantity and configuration represented by the offer.
Meet file, format, and URL requirements
Supported file formats
Google lists JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF as supported formats for product imagery. Export a normal, viewable image rather than a design-project file. Confirm that the server returns the image itself, not an HTML page, login screen, or error document with an image extension.
Keep the file inside the limits
Check both dimensions and encoded size after your final export. An image can be below the pixel maximum but still exceed the 16 MB file limit, or remain under 16 MB while exceeding 64 megapixels. Resize, choose an efficient format, or adjust compression while preserving legibility. Do not enlarge a tiny source merely to hit a number; interpolation cannot restore detail and may worsen a quality review.
Make the URL directly crawlable
Use an HTTP or HTTPS URL that remains stable and can be fetched without a session, cookie, geographic gate, or expiring token. Google crawls the URL supplied in your product data, so test the raw address from outside your office network and confirm that it returns a successful response with the correct image content.

- Avoid temporary URLs that expire before crawling finishes.
- Follow redirects only when they are reliable; a direct, permanent image address is less fragile.
- Ensure the host serves the correct MIME type and does not require JavaScript to reveal the file.
If a CDN, image optimizer, or feed system rewrites URLs, inspect the final address that Google receives, not only the address shown in your content-management system.

Add supplementary images strategically
The additional_image_link attribute accepts up to 10 extra image URLs per item. Additional images are optional but recommended because they answer questions the main image cannot.
Useful subjects for additional views
- Alternate angles that reveal depth, ports, closures, or controls.
- Close-ups of texture, material, finish, labels, or important details.
- A scale or lifestyle view that shows the product in use without hiding it.
- Packaging and included components when they clarify what arrives in the box.
- Relevant parts of a bundle or multipack, provided the images match the advertised contents.
Keep every supplementary image relevant to the same item and variant. Do not use the allowance to promote unrelated products or show accessories that are not included. A coherent sequence is more useful than ten near-duplicates: lead with a clear hero view, then answer likely objections with detail and context.
Remove text, logos, and other obstructive overlays
Product images should not be designed like advertisements. Promotional overlays and watermarks can obscure the item and lead to disapproval. Keep the following off the image itself:

- Prices, discounts, shipping claims, or promotional badges.
- Marketing claims, ratings, guarantees, or compatibility statements added over the photo.
- Barcodes placed on top of the product view.
- Watermarks and retailer or manufacturer logos added during editing.
- Condition labels such as “refurbished” or “new” superimposed on the image.
A logo that is physically printed or embossed on the product is different from a logo added as an overlay. Likewise, a model number molded into a device can remain visible; an editor-added text banner cannot. If you need to communicate price, shipping, or compatibility, put that information in the relevant feed attributes and listing content instead of altering the image.
Preserve metadata on AI-generated images
If generative tools created or materially synthesized an image, retain metadata identifying its AI origin when exporting it for Merchant Center. Google’s additional-image guidance gives IPTC DigitalSourceType examples including TrainedAlgorithmicMedia, CompositeSynthetic, and AlgorithmicMedia.

Image editors and optimization pipelines sometimes strip IPTC fields by default. Check the exported file’s metadata after every transformation, especially when converting formats, passing through a CDN, or generating thumbnails. Do not add a label over the picture as a substitute for embedded metadata; the requirement concerns machine-readable provenance information.
Prepare and submit images: a repeatable workflow
- Inventory each offer. Map every product ID and variant to the exact image that represents its advertised color, pattern, size, quantity, and configuration.
- Create the primary asset. Use a clear, in-focus view on a white or light-neutral background unless a lifestyle setting is genuinely more informative. Keep the full silhouette visible and avoid added promotional elements.
- Set a durable canvas. Export at a size that supports the 1500 × 1500 quality recommendation where practical, while staying below the stated megapixel and file-size ceilings. Do not upscale a blurred original simply to reach a target.
- Choose a supported format. Save a normal JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF file and verify that the final file opens correctly.
- Publish a direct URL. Put the image at a stable HTTP or HTTPS address that does not require a login, expiring token, or client-side script.
- Test retrieval. Request the URL from an external connection, inspect the response, and confirm that automated crawlers are not blocked by robots settings, a firewall, or bot challenges.
- Add useful alternatives. Populate
additional_image_linkwith relevant angles, details, use views, packaging, or bundle components, up to the attribute’s limit. - Check overlays and provenance. Remove text and watermarks; if the image is AI-generated, confirm that the IPTC DigitalSourceType metadata survived export.
- Upload or save the product data. Submit the feed or edit the item in Merchant Center, then open Products → Needs attention to review image-specific diagnostics.
- Allow processing and verify. Status changes are not always immediate. Recheck the issue, the fetched image, and the variant attributes after Google processes the update.
Diagnose common image issues
“Missing product image”
Confirm that image_link is present for the affected item and that the URL returns the intended file without authentication. Replace placeholders, empty responses, and generic category pictures with a product-specific asset. Save or re-upload the corrected data and watch the issue status in Products → Needs attention.

Open the URL and compare the visible product with the title, variant attributes, and offer contents. Check for a color, pattern, size, or bundle mismatch. Correct either the image assignment or the product data so that the image and offer describe the same thing.
“Image too big”
Inspect both pixel dimensions and encoded file size. Reduce the canvas or export a more efficient file while retaining enough detail for shoppers. Remember that the maximums are separate checks: passing one does not excuse exceeding the other.

“Low image quality”
First distinguish a warning from a current eligibility failure. An image can exceed the present category minimum yet remain below the announced 500 × 500 standard, which is why Google begins issuing warnings in July 2026. Replace borderline assets with sharper, larger originals and follow the 1500 × 1500-or-larger quality recommendation when your source material supports it.
“Text on image” or watermark-related disapproval
Remove every editor-added price, shipping statement, call to action, promotional claim, barcode, condition label, watermark, and retailer or manufacturer logo. Re-export the clean image and submit the new asset. Leave only marks that are physically part of the product itself.

Google cannot fetch the image
Test the URL without your browser’s logged-in session. Review robots directives, firewall logs, CDN rules, token expiration, redirect chains, and rate limits. The crawler must receive the raw image consistently; an address that works for a human in an authenticated session is not sufficient.
Replace an image without waiting unnecessarily
Google says recrawling an unchanged URL after a file replacement can take up to six weeks. If the old image persists, change the filename or otherwise publish the replacement at a new URL, update image_link, and submit the revised product data. Google says a new URL may be recrawled within 24–72 hours, although processing and review can still take longer.
During replacement evaluation, an already approved image may continue to be served for up to 30 days. Keep color, pattern, quantity, and other related attributes aligned with that still-served image until the replacement is active. Do not delete the old asset immediately if another feed, cache, or variant still references it; retire it after the new URL is confirmed.

Final pre-submission checklist
- There is one valid, product-specific URL in
image_link. - The image shows the exact advertised variant and complete offer.
- The file uses a supported format and stays within the pixel and file-size limits.
- The product is sharp, well lit, fully visible, and sensibly framed.
- No editor-added price, shipping text, call to action, claim, barcode, watermark, condition label, or retailer/manufacturer logo appears.
- The URL is stable, directly accessible over HTTP or HTTPS, and fetchable by Googlebot.
- Additional images, if used, are relevant and do not exceed 10 URLs.
- AI-generated imagery retains the required IPTC DigitalSourceType metadata.
- Variants and attributes remain consistent while an image replacement is being reviewed.
- After submission, the item is checked under Products → Needs attention until the diagnostic updates.
