Measure your chest or bust, waist, hips, and—when choosing pants—inseam, then compare those numbers with the size chart for the exact scrub brand and style. Scrub sizes are not universal: if your measurements point to different sizes, follow that brand’s guidance and consider how close or roomy you want the garment to feel.
What to measure before choosing scrubs
Use a flexible body measuring tape that can follow your contours. Measure over light clothing or close-fitting undergarments, keep the tape level for circumferences, and hold it snug without pulling it tight. Record each measurement and use the units shown on the chart.

- Chest or bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust.
- Waist: Measure around your natural waist. Cherokee describes finding the natural crease by bending to one side; FIGS directs customers to measure the smallest part of the waist.
- Hips: Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and rear.
- Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside leg. For a body measurement, follow the inside leg to where you want the pants to end; compare it with the garment’s listed inseam.

- Choose the exact brand and garment. Open the chart for the brand, and check whether you are sizing a top, pants, or a set. Do not assume a letter size means the same thing across brands.
- Match each body measurement to the chart. Use chest or bust for tops, and use waist and hips for pants as that brand directs. The chart—not your usual street-clothing size—is the reference.
- Check the fit label and style. A close-fitting cut and a relaxed or unisex cut can feel different even when the size label is the same. Read the fit description for the exact style.
- Choose a pants length by inseam. Compare your preferred length with the inseam option listed for that product. Height alone does not establish which inseam will fit.
What to do when measurements suggest different sizes
There is no universal tie-breaker; use the instructions for the brand and garment you are buying. For example, Cherokee says to choose the size indicated by the hips when hip and waist measurements suggest different sizes. If a measurement falls between sizes, Cherokee advises choosing smaller for a tighter fit or larger for a looser fit.

FIGS gives a different garment-specific rule: when between sizes, use bust or chest for tops and hips for pants. Its size guidance also notes that sizes are the same across multiple styles, while fit can vary by style. Treat these as each company’s instructions, not rules that apply to every scrub maker.
Choose the fit that suits how you want scrubs to feel
Fit terms describe the intended shape and ease of a garment. Cherokee characterizes its junior contoured fit as close to the body, its missy relaxed fit as roomier with ease and coverage, and its unisex fit as loose and spacious. Cherokee suggests sizing up from your usual size for more breathing room in junior contoured pieces; that advice applies to those pieces, not automatically to every scrub style.

When two sizes seem plausible, consider the decisive measurement for that garment, its fit label, the specific style, and—on pants—the inseam. A larger size may provide more ease, but check how that affects the garment’s intended shape rather than sizing up by habit.

Cherokee’s current size chart, accessed in 2026, lists the following approximate inseam ranges. These are Cherokee sizing ranges, not universal scrub lengths; individual product styles may differ, so check the product listing as well as the general chart.
