For most two-piece sets, record bust or chest, natural waist and fullest hip measurements; add inseam for full-length pants. Keep the tape level and comfortably loose, then choose the size that suits the garment’s stated fit, length, fabric and the amount of movement you want.
What to measure before you shop
Your usual letter or numeric size is only a starting point. Brands define sizes differently, and even one retailer can use separate charts for women’s, men’s and unisex items. Take measurements in the units used by the product page and keep the record somewhere you can reuse it.

| Body point | How it is used | When it is essential |
|---|---|---|
| Bust or chest | Determines room through the top, including pajama shirts, robes and sweatshirts. | Every top or two-piece set. |
| Natural or true waist | Helps select tops that end at the waist and bottoms with an elastic or drawstring waistband. | Every bottom; useful for sets. |
| Fullest hips and bottom | Determines room through pajama pants, shorts, skirts and fitted lounge pieces. | Every bottom or one-piece garment. |
| Inseam | Checks whether full-length pants will reach the intended hem. | Full-length pants, especially when petite, regular or tall lengths are offered. |
If a product has an unusual cut, such as a cropped top, wide leg or one-piece, read its description for any additional garment-specific measurement. Do not assume the same three numbers answer every sizing question.

Prepare for an accurate measurement
- Use a flexible fabric tape. A soft tape follows the body without the gaps or kinks that a rigid ruler creates. Ralph Lauren’s official measuring guidance recommends a fabric tape measure.
- Wear little or no clothing where practical. Thin underwear is preferable to jeans, a sweatshirt or other bulky layers. Ralph Lauren specifically advises measuring over little or no clothing.
- Stand naturally. Keep your feet in a normal stance, relax your abdomen and let your arms rest unless the retailer’s instructions say otherwise. Do not pull your stomach in or deliberately change your posture.
- Keep the tape parallel to the floor. Check in a mirror or ask another person to check the back. A tape that slopes upward or downward can change the reading.
- Keep it comfortably loose. The tape should touch the body without digging in. Do not add an arbitrary number of inches; the chart and the garment’s intended ease account for fit.
- Write down the result immediately. Record inches or centimetres to the precision the retailer uses, and note the date if your measurements may change.
How to measure your bust or chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest or bust. Keep it level across your back and under your arms. Let your arms hang in a relaxed position unless the individual guide gives a different instruction. Breathe normally while you read the number.

Retailers do not all describe the point in exactly the same words. One chart may say “fullest part of the bust,” while another may use “chest.” Follow the wording on the chart for the item you are buying rather than substituting a familiar method automatically. If you are measuring alone, turn sideways to a mirror to make sure the tape has not dropped between your shoulder blades.
How to find your natural waist
Measure around your natural or true waist, keeping the tape horizontal. Paper Label describes this as the narrowest part of the torso. It is generally above the waistband position of low-rise pants, so do not place the tape where you normally wear jeans unless the chart explicitly asks for that location.
Stand relaxed and take the reading after a normal exhale. A snug reading that compresses the body can lead to an unnecessarily small waistband. For drawstring bottoms, the waist number still matters: the garment must sit comfortably before the cord is tightened.
How to measure your hips
Place the tape around the fullest part of your hips and bottom. Keep it level from front to back and make sure it passes over the widest point, not just the upper hip. Some retailer instructions ask you to stand with your heels together; follow that direction when it appears on the item’s chart.
Do not angle the tape around the body to obtain a smaller number. If your hips are substantially larger than the chart’s waist range, use the hip measurement to evaluate bottoms and then check whether the waistband construction provides enough adjustment. A set may require different sizes for its top and bottom if the retailer permits separates.

How to measure an inseam for pajama pants
For full-length pants, measure the inside of the leg from the crotch to the desired hem. Natori’s sleepwear guidance uses crotch-to-desired-hem for full-length pajamas. Keep the tape straight down the inside leg; do not follow the outside contour of the body.
You can measure a well-fitting pair of pants as a second check by laying it flat and measuring from the crotch seam to the hem, but use the product page’s definition when it differs. A listed inseam may describe the finished garment rather than your body measurement, so read the label beside the number.

Length is especially important when a retailer offers petite, regular or tall options. A correct waist and hip size does not guarantee a suitable length. Compare your inseam with the stated option before choosing a colour or print.
Read the exact product chart, not a universal conversion
Open the size chart attached to the specific product page. Ralph Lauren states that sizes vary between brands and directs shoppers to each product page for the most specific fit information. A letter size such as M and a numeric size such as 10 are not universal conversions.
First identify what the chart measures:
- Body measurements: ranges intended to fit a person with the listed bust, waist or hip dimensions.
- Garment measurements: dimensions taken from the finished item. These include the garment’s own ease and should not be compared directly with a body circumference without understanding how the item is meant to fit.
- Length measurements: inseam, body length or a stated hem measurement. These may be listed separately from circumference ranges.
Check whether the chart uses inches or centimetres and whether the ranges apply to women’s, men’s or unisex sizing. Paper Label publishes separate women’s, men’s and unisex charts, so selecting the wrong category can produce a confident but irrelevant match.

When a page gives both a general chart and item-specific measurements, treat the item-specific information as the closer reference. A relaxed fleece set and a fitted knit set may use the same nominal size while allowing very different amounts of room.
What to do when you are between sizes
Start by identifying the measurement that controls the garment. For pajama pants, hip and waist ranges usually matter more than bust; for a top, bust or chest may control the choice. Then use the product’s fit description and construction to decide how much ease you want.
| Situation | More useful choice | Reason to check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| You want extra room for sleeping or lounging. | The larger of the two chart sizes, if the garment’s length and proportions remain suitable. | Oversizing can make sleeves or pant legs too long. |
| You prefer a closer, tailored appearance. | The smaller chart size, only if your largest body measurement still falls within its range. | A close fit can restrict movement or pull across the hips and bust. |
| The waistband is elastic. | Use the chart’s waist and hip ranges, then inspect the product description. | Elastic provides adjustment, but it does not eliminate the need for hip room. |
| The waistband is drawstring. | Choose the size that accommodates your hips and check the stated rise or length. | A cord can tighten a waist, but it cannot add fabric through the seat. |
| Your measurements span two size ranges. | Compare the item’s intended fit, fabric, length and your priority measurement. | There is no evidence-based universal rule for converting between brands. |
Natori’s own Sleep & Loungewear Size Guide answers the question this way: “For a looser fit, size up. For a more tailored look, choose the smaller size.” That is Natori’s guidance for its shopping context, not a rule that applies to every retailer or fabric. The same guide says, “Sleepwear should feel comfortable and allow for easy movement.” Use that principle together with the item’s chart.
Account for fabric and construction
Fabric affects comfort, but the available guidance does not establish a universal stretch formula. Read the retailer’s description for the material and construction, then use it as a fit consideration rather than as a substitute for measurements.
- Stretch or knit fabric: may accommodate movement, but the chart still identifies the intended body range.
- Woven or low-stretch fabric: deserves particular attention at the bust, hips and seat because there may be less give.
- Elastic waistband: can flex around the waist, while the hip and thigh dimensions still need enough room.
- Drawstring waistband: allows tightening, but the garment must still fit through the hips and rise.
- Fitted, semi-fitted, relaxed or loose descriptions: indicate the designer’s intended silhouette. Brooks Running’s apparel guide uses these fit labels and also distinguishes regular, petite and tall inseams; treat that as general apparel terminology, not as a loungewear-specific recommendation.
For sleepwear, prioritise the ability to sit, turn and move your legs without the fabric pulling. For a robe or lounge layer worn over other clothes, include the thickness of the layers you expect to wear when judging the listed fit.

Use length options deliberately
Do not let a correct circumference measurement hide a length problem. Compare your inseam with the product’s full-length measurement or its petite, regular and tall options. If the page gives only a model’s height or a vague description such as “ankle length,” regard that as less precise than a stated inseam.
For shorts and cropped pants, look for a stated inseam or garment length if coverage matters to you. For tops, check body length when you need the hem to reach a particular point. These are garment-specific decisions, so the product description takes precedence over a generic size chart.
Check care instructions before assuming the fit will stay unchanged
Natori notes that some materials may shrink slightly and advises following the care label. The amount depends on the material and the care method; the available guidance does not establish a universal shrinkage percentage. Read the item’s washing and drying instructions before ordering a close fit, especially when the garment is made from a fibre that requires special care.
Do not “size up for shrinkage” by default. If the retailer gives a specific care warning, use that information alongside the chart. Otherwise, choose for the intended fit when new and follow the label after purchase.
Examples of how retailer charts differ
Retailer charts illustrate why copying a size from one website to another is unreliable. On the Natori chart reviewed in 2026, the listed women’s 3X range is a bust of 52–54 inches, a waist of 45.5–47.5 inches and hips of 54.5–56.5 inches. Those figures describe Natori’s chart entry; they do not define what 3X means elsewhere.

Paper Label’s women’s chart, also reviewed in 2026, lists XS as a 33–34-inch bust, 25–26-inch waist and 35–36-inch hip. That is a separate retailer’s range and should be used only for an item tied to that chart. The contrast is useful: the same letter can represent materially different body ranges.
If your measurements fall outside a chart, look for extended sizes, a different cut or a product that publishes more detailed garment dimensions. Do not infer an equivalent size from another brand’s label.
Troubleshoot a measurement that looks wrong
The number changes every time
Repeat the measurement with the tape level, standing naturally and wearing the same light clothing. Have someone hold the tape at the back if possible. Record two readings; if they differ, use the method that follows the retailer’s instructions and investigate the tape position before choosing a size.

Use the measurement that controls the garment, then inspect the waistband and fit description. For bottoms, hips and seat room often determine whether you can sit and move comfortably; an elastic or drawstring waist may provide adjustment at the top edge.
Your bust or chest is between sizes
Read whether the top is fitted, relaxed or loose and whether the fabric has stretch. Compare the garment’s length and sleeve details before choosing the larger size for additional room.
The chart has no inseam
Look for a separate length table, a petite/regular/tall selector or an item measurement in the description. If none is provided, your inseam cannot be matched precisely; treat the retailer’s stated model information as a rough indication rather than a measurement.
The site shows only a letter size
Search the same product page for a size-guide link, measurement pop-up or garment-details section. If the site supplies no numerical information, you cannot make the same evidence-based comparison as you can with a full chart. Use the retailer’s fit wording and check its exchange terms before placing the order.

- Confirm inches versus centimetres.
- Confirm whether the numbers are body measurements or finished-garment measurements.
- Confirm that you are using the correct women’s, men’s or unisex chart.
- Read the fit description: fitted, tailored, semi-fitted, relaxed or loose.
- Check fabric description, waistband type and available length options.
- Decide whether you want room for movement or a closer silhouette.
- Read the care label information, including any warning that the material may shrink slightly.
- Save the measurements and the chart values you used so you can explain your choice if you need help from the retailer.
The reliable rule for online loungewear sizing
Measure the body points the garment actually uses, then let the exact product chart—not a remembered size label—make the comparison. Resolve a tie by looking at intended fit, fabric, waistband, length and the amount of room you need to sleep or lounge comfortably. That method cannot remove every difference between brands, but it gives you a repeatable decision based on the information the retailer has published.
