Measure two separate things before you order: the place where the product will operate and the complete route from delivery point to that place. Record the narrowest width, lowest height and shallowest usable depth, then compare those figures with the exact model’s dimensions, door or stand position, connection requirements and installation instructions. A product that fits an alcove can still fail at a doorway, stair turn or final approach.
What “fits” actually means
A safe purchase has to pass four checks:
- Destination fit: the cabinet, screen or cutout fits the intended width, height and depth.
- Operating fit: doors, drawers, hinges, stands, vents and connections have the space they need while the product is in use.
- Installation fit: the chosen configuration—freestanding, built-in, stacked, on a stand or wall-mounted—matches the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Delivery fit: the packaged or unpackaged product can travel through every gate, doorway, hall, corner, stair and final approach.
Use the exact model number when checking specifications. “A 65-inch TV,” “a standard refrigerator” or “a 29-inch washer” describes a category, not a guaranteed physical size. Manufacturers may publish separate cabinet dimensions, door-open depth, stand dimensions, wall-mount dimensions and cutout dimensions.

Prepare a measurement sheet
Use a retractable tape measure, pencil and paper or a notes app. Measure in inches or centimetres consistently; do not mix units. For every value, write down the location where you measured it and whether an obstruction was included.
Recommended Free Tools
| Record | How to write it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Opening width | “Left wall to right wall at floor, midpoint and top: 820 mm, 814 mm, 809 mm.” | The smallest width is the usable width. |
| Opening height | “Floor to underside of cabinet at front and back: 1,910 mm, 1,903 mm.” | The lowest height controls the fit. |
| Usable depth | “Back wall to front edge, excluding removable trim: 700 mm.” | Doors, hoses, plugs and ventilation can consume the remaining depth. |
| Obstructions | List baseboards, trim, counters, islands, pipes, sockets, handrails and hinges. | An obstruction can create a narrower point than the main opening. |
| Route dimensions | Measure each gate, doorway, corridor, turn, stair and final approach. | The tightest route point can reject an otherwise suitable product. |
| Product match | Copy the model’s width, height, depth, open-door or stand dimensions beside your measurements. | It prevents comparing your space with the wrong specification. |
Measure twice, especially if the difference between the opening and the product is only a few centimetres. Keep the sheet until installation is complete.

Measure the destination opening
1. Find the narrowest usable width
Measure at the floor, the middle and the top of the opening. Include fixed trim, baseboards, counters and cabinet edges. If a door or drawer must open toward a wall, measure the clearance on the hinge side as well as the straight opening. Record the smallest result, not an average.
For a television on furniture, measure the furniture’s usable top width rather than its outside width. Check for raised lips, cable channels, center supports and shelves that reduce the area available to the stand.
2. Find the lowest usable height
Measure from the actual supporting floor or shelf to the lowest obstruction: a cabinet underside, beam, shelf, trim or ceiling slope. Take measurements at the front and rear if the floor or cabinet is uneven. For a TV, include the total height of the screen and stand, not just the panel height. For a wall-mounted set, account for the bracket and the position of the mounting holes.

Measure from the back wall to the nearest front obstruction. Note whether the back wall has a baseboard, outlet, pipe, gas line or cable trunking. A product’s published body depth may exclude its handles, doors, control knobs, rear connections or required air gap. A refrigerator may need extra room for a water line and hinge swing; laundry equipment may need room for hoses and a vent.
4. Check the floor and support
Confirm that the floor is level and strong enough for the loaded appliance. Identify thresholds, floor transitions and grates that could affect a dolly or prevent the unit from sitting level. For a TV stand, verify that the furniture is stable, wide enough for the stand feet and rated for the television’s weight; dimensions alone do not establish load capacity.

Account for clearances, connections and movement
Do not subtract a universal clearance number from every purchase. Required space varies by model, installation type and regional instructions. Use the selected product’s installation guide for the final allowance.
- Ventilation: heat-producing appliances and some enclosed electronics require air space around specified sides or the rear.
- Connections: power cords, gas fittings, water lines, drain hoses and exhaust ducts need bend room and a route that is not crushed.
- Doors and hinges: a refrigerator or dishwasher may fit with its doors closed but fail to open far enough for shelves or drawers to clear adjacent cabinets.
- Cleaning and service: leave the access the manufacturer specifies for filter changes, cleaning, leveling and future repairs.
- Controls and safety: keep plugs, shutoff valves and control panels reachable after installation.
GE Appliances’ preparation guidance specifically calls for checking narrow points, the door opening, hinge-side room, ventilation and cleaning access. Treat those as separate checks rather than assuming a single “depth” figure covers them all.
Measure the delivery route from outside to the final position
Start where the delivery vehicle or building entrance meets the property. Draw the route and measure every point in order. Retailers may have route rules or require specific delivery dimensions, so ask what they need before scheduling.
- Outside gate or entry: measure the clear opening with the gate fully open. Include posts, latches and decorative rails.
- Exterior path: note steps, slopes, uneven paving and the turning area needed for a dolly.
- Main door: measure the opening with the door at its maximum practical angle. Check the frame, threshold, closer and hinge-side projection.
- Hallways: measure the narrowest straight section and the available height. Include handrails, wall lights, shelves and radiators.
- Corners and turns: measure both legs of each turn and the diagonal maneuvering space. A box can be narrower than a turn requires if it cannot pivot.
- Stairs and landings: record stair width, ceiling height, landing depth, banisters and overhead obstructions. Confirm whether the delivery team will carry the item upstairs.
- Interior doors: remove a door only if the retailer or installer permits it and you can safely reinstall it. Measure the frame after accounting for hinges and stops.
- Final approach: check islands, counters, cabinets and the space needed to rotate the product into its operating orientation.
Ask whether the retailer measures the packaged dimensions, the product dimensions or both. Packaging may be wider or taller than the appliance, while some products can be unpacked outside only if the delivery service allows it. Do not assume handles, doors or shelves will be removed; confirm who is responsible and whether removal affects warranty or installation.
TV measurements: diagonal size is not physical width
A television’s advertised size is the diagonal measurement of the screen, not its width. Two TVs with the same diagonal can have slightly different outside dimensions because of bezel design and chassis shape. Use the model’s dimension table for width, height and depth.

For a TV on a stand
- Measure the furniture’s usable width and compare it with the stand’s footprint or stand width.
- Check total height with the stand, including the panel above the stand and any center pedestal.
- Measure stand depth and make sure the front and rear feet sit fully on the furniture.
- Leave room for cables without forcing the panel forward or crushing connectors against the wall.
- Check viewing height and distance: the screen should be visible from the main seats without the stand blocking a soundbar or cabinet drawer.
For a wall-mounted TV
- Verify the wall can support the television and the selected bracket.
- Match the bracket to the model-specific mounting-hole pattern and screw requirements.
- Measure the TV’s depth with the bracket attached, not only the bare panel depth.
- Locate studs, wiring and pipes before drilling, and reserve space for power and signal cables.
- Check furniture below the screen, soundbar height and the ability to reach ports and controls after mounting.
Samsung’s TV guidance distinguishes diagonal screen size from actual dimensions and viewing distance. Its wall-mount guidance also recommends considering placement above furniture and leaving practical room around the installation. Follow the current instructions for your region and model.
Large-appliance checks by type
Refrigerators
Measure the cabinet opening, then measure the route with doors and handles in the delivery configuration. Check hinge-side clearance, door swing, drawer extension and the ability to remove shelves if the manufacturer requires it. Include water-line and power access, ventilation and the room needed to clean behind the unit. LG’s refrigerator measuring guidance emphasizes both the location and the access path; a refrigerator that enters sideways may still fail when it must rotate into the opening.
Washers and dryers
Confirm whether the pair is freestanding, stacked or installed under a counter. Measure the opening for each machine, the combined height of a stacking arrangement and the depth with hoses or venting connected. Check drain, water and electrical locations, door swing and service access. Whirlpool’s washer-and-dryer guidance recommends using a tape measure and recording clearances and route dimensions.
One LG “Measure First” laundry guide illustrates why model-specific figures matter. For the particular washer/dryer pair covered, it specifies a minimum area of 60 inches wide × 40.8 inches high × 37.3 inches deep, with 5 inches allowed for hoses and venting. The listed machines are 29 inches wide, 40.8 inches high and 32.3 inches deep; the washer or dryer reaches 57 inches deep with its door open. Those figures apply only to that guide’s intended units, not to every laundry product.
Dishwashers, ranges and built-in products
Measure the cutout rather than the surrounding cabinetry. Record opening width at the top and bottom, height at both sides and depth to the rear obstruction. Check countertop thickness, flooring height, door swing, plumbing, electrical or gas connections and the manufacturer’s anti-tip or anchoring requirements. A built-in model may require a precise opening even when a freestanding product would tolerate more variation.

Use model-specific specification tables
Copy dimensions from the exact regional product page and installation document. Look for labels such as “cabinet dimensions,” “dimensions with door open,” “stand dimensions,” “cutout dimensions,” “depth including handle” and “required clearance.” If a specification is marked approximate, preserve that qualification and leave additional practical margin rather than treating it as a guaranteed tolerance.
| Compare | TV on stand | TV wall-mounted | Large appliance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | Panel width and stand footprint | Panel width and wall area | Cabinet width at the narrowest opening |
| Height | Total height with stand | Panel height plus bracket position | Product height plus leveling or stacking requirements |
| Depth | Panel and stand depth | Panel depth plus bracket and cable bend | Body depth plus doors, handles, hoses, vents and connection clearance |
| Movement | Stand placement and cable reach | Bracket tilt or swivel range | Door, drawer and hinge swing |
| Route | Usually the panel or carton’s widest point | Panel and carton dimensions | Packaged and delivery dimensions, turns and stairs |
When comparing two candidates, keep the installation configuration identical. Do not compare one refrigerator’s cabinet depth with another’s depth including handles, or one TV’s panel width with another’s stand width.
Worked TV example: interpreting a dimension table
Sony’s X85K dimension table separates screen, stand and mounting measurements. For the named 55X85K 55-inch model, the listed approximate values are: 1,233 mm screen width, 711 mm screen height, 1,061 mm stand width, 783 mm height with stand, 81 mm screen depth and 339 mm stand depth. The table also provides mounting-hole spacing. A buyer with a 1,100 mm-wide cabinet should compare that width with the 1,061 mm stand width, then check the 783 mm total height and 339 mm stand depth against the furniture—not merely rely on “55-inch.” Because the figures are approximate and tied to a named X85K product, verify the current regional specification before ordering.
Compare finalists with a fit-first decision table
If two or more models pass the initial check, rank them using the same measurements:
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Installed size | Which has the smallest overall width, height and depth after installation? |
| Movement | Which has the least demanding door, hinge, drawer or stand swing? |
| Connections and ventilation | Which model’s required rear and side allowances work with your outlets, hoses, vents and walls? |
| Route and packaging | Which packaged or delivery configuration passes the tightest doorway and turn? |
| Configuration | Are you comparing like with like—freestanding versus built-in, stacked versus side-by-side, stand versus wall mount? |
| Use requirements | After physical fit is proven, which capacity, viewing distance or household feature meets your needs? |
Capacity, screen size and features matter only after the physical and route checks pass. A larger capacity is not a benefit if the appliance cannot be installed or serviced safely.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Measuring only the destination
Symptom: the product fits the alcove but cannot pass the entry or turn. Fix: measure the route in sequence, identify the tightest point and ask the retailer for delivery-route requirements before purchase.
Using advertised screen size as width
Symptom: a TV labeled 55 or 65 inches overhangs the stand. Fix: use the model’s screen width, stand width and total stand height.
Ignoring open-door dimensions
Symptom: an appliance can be placed but doors or drawers hit a wall or island. Fix: compare door-open depth and hinge-side clearance with the actual room.

Symptom: the cabinet depth works on paper, but the plug, hose or vent is sharply bent or the product sits too far forward. Fix: use the installation guide’s connection and ventilation allowances; do not substitute a generic clearance.
Comparing unlike specifications
Symptom: one model appears shallower because its listing excludes handles or doors. Fix: compare the same measurement label for every candidate and note what each dimension includes.
Trusting a single measurement
Symptom: trim, an uneven wall or a sloping floor removes the expected margin. Fix: measure at multiple points and use the narrowest, lowest and shallowest usable values.
Final pre-order checklist
- Exact model number and regional specification confirmed.
- Destination width, height and depth measured at all relevant points.
- Baseboards, trim, counters, islands, outlets, pipes and handrails included.
- Door, drawer, hinge, stand or bracket movement checked.
- Ventilation, hose, drain, gas, water, power and cable allowances taken from the installation guide.
- Every delivery gate, doorway, hall, corner, stair and landing measured.
- Packaging or retailer delivery dimensions and route rules confirmed.
- Freestanding, built-in, stacked, stand or wall-mounted configuration identified.
- Measurements and product dimensions recorded together on a written sheet.
- Installation and service access remain possible after the product is in place.
Keep the sheet for the installer and delivery team. If any required dimension is missing from the listing, obtain the current installation document or ask the retailer before paying; a category label is not a substitute for a model-specific fit check.
