The dependable way to measure shoe size at home is to measure both feet while standing, wearing the socks you will use with the shoes. Mark the back of each heel and the tip of each foot’s longest toe, measure the two lengths, and use the larger result with the exact brand’s size chart. Then check the actual shoes for toe room, width, depth, heel security and comfort while walking. A length measurement narrows your choice; it does not guarantee that a particular shoe fits.
Why a number alone cannot tell you whether a shoe fits
Shoe sizing is not a single universal scale. The same labelled size can feel different between brands, models and intended uses because manufacturers vary the internal shape, toe box, materials and sizing conventions. Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust summarizes the practical problem this way: “Every brand is different, just like every foot.” Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust likewise advises treating a measurement from one shop only as a guide when buying from another.

Length is only one dimension. Two feet with the same heel-to-toe measurement may need different widths, toe-box heights or heel shapes. Feet can also change in size and shape, and they may become larger after hours of standing or walking. The useful goal is therefore not to discover one permanent shoe-size number. It is to create a repeatable measurement, select the closest option on the specific brand’s chart, and verify the fit in the shoe itself.
What you need before measuring
- A sheet of paper large enough for the entire foot.
- A flat, hard floor rather than carpet or a soft mat.
- A pencil or pen held vertically enough to mark the foot’s outline points.
- A household ruler or flexible tape measure for the distance between marks. A special measuring device is not required.
- The socks normally worn with the shoes you are considering.
- The brand and exact model’s current size chart, if you already know what you plan to buy.
Have another person make the marks if possible. It is difficult to stand naturally, bend down and keep a pencil in the correct position at the same time. If you cannot get help, make the marks carefully without shifting your weight.

How to measure your feet at home
1. Measure at the right time
Measure later in the day if your feet tend to swell or feel larger after standing or walking. This captures the size you are more likely to need during normal wear instead of the smallest measurement from first thing in the morning. Put on the socks intended for the shoes before you begin. Thick winter socks, sports socks and ordinary dress socks can produce different results.
2. Place the paper and stand naturally
Put the paper on a hard, level surface with one edge close to a wall if that helps you keep your heel in a consistent position. Stand on the paper with your full weight on the foot being measured. Do not measure while sitting: a foot can spread and lengthen under load, so a seated result may underestimate the space required.
3. Mark the heel and longest toe
Mark the point at the very back of the heel and the point at the end of the longest toe. The longest toe is not always the big toe; on some feet the second toe extends farther. Mark the actual longest toe rather than assuming which one it is. Keep the pencil close to vertical so the mark represents the end of the foot instead of an outward-sloping line.
4. Repeat on the other foot
Measure the second foot in the same standing position, with the same socks and paper setup. Small differences between feet are normal. Record each foot separately instead of averaging the two numbers.
5. Measure each marked distance
Use a ruler or tape to measure from the heel mark to the longest-toe mark for each foot. Keep the measurement straight along the foot’s length. Write down the units used, such as millimetres or centimetres, so you do not accidentally compare a metric result with an imperial chart.
6. Use the larger foot’s length
Take the longer of the two measurements when consulting a size chart. A shoe selected for the smaller foot can leave the larger foot cramped, while a little extra room on the smaller side can usually be managed with the shoe’s fastening or an appropriate insole. This larger-foot rule is the central practical recommendation in the home-measurement guidance from Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust and Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust.
How to convert the measurement into a shopping size
Open the size chart for the exact brand and shoe, then match your larger foot’s measured length to the chart’s stated foot-length range. Do not assume that a US, UK or EU conversion table from a different retailer will produce the same result. A chart may be based on foot length, an internal shoe length, or a manufacturer’s own grading system, and the labels can differ between makes.

If the chart places you between sizes, use the construction and intended fit as decision factors rather than choosing automatically. A closed athletic shoe, a rigid leather shoe and an adjustable sandal may need different allowances. Check whether the maker tells you to size up or down for that model; if it does not, compare the measured length with the model’s stated range and rely on the try-on checks below.
| Measurement or chart detail | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Both foot lengths | Keep both records; use the longer foot for the initial size choice. |
| Longest toe | Measure whichever toe reaches farthest, not automatically the big toe. |
| Brand and model | Use the chart belonging to the exact shoe, because sizing varies by make and style. |
| Width information | Use a width or fitting service when offered; length alone cannot establish width or depth. |
| Between two chart entries | Check the shoe’s shape, fastening and return policy, then verify the fit on both feet. |
Check the shoe, not just the label
Try on both shoes with the socks and any insoles you will normally wear. Fit the larger foot first, then make sure the other shoe remains secure and comfortable. If you are ordering online, perform the same checks indoors on a clean floor until you know whether the retailer will accept a return.
Toe clearance
As a starting point, the cited NHS fitting guidance uses about 1 centimetre, or roughly a thumb’s width, between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. This is an approximate fitting recommendation, not a universal formula. The required space depends on the shoe’s shape, the activity and how much your foot moves inside it. Your toes should be able to move naturally without pressing into the end when you stand and walk.
Width across the forefoot
The shoe should not squeeze the ball of the foot or force the toes together. Look for pressure along the sides, bulging material, numbness or a feeling that the foot is sitting on an edge. Extra length does not reliably fix a narrow shoe: going up a size can leave excessive space in front while the forefoot remains compressed.

Toe-box depth and shape
There must be enough vertical room for the toes and enough space for their natural shape. A shoe can be long enough yet press on the tops of the toes, a prominent joint or another area of the foot. Check this while standing, when the foot is bearing weight, and again while walking.
Heel hold
The heel should stay comfortably in place as you walk. A small amount of movement can occur in some shoe designs, but obvious slipping, rubbing or repeated lifting indicates that the shape or fastening is wrong. Laces, straps and similar adjustable fastenings can help secure a shoe when the underlying length and width are already appropriate; tightening them cannot compensate for a shoe that is too short or narrow.
Walking comfort
Walk in both shoes for several minutes. Notice pressure, rubbing, pinching, sliding, toe contact and any change in comfort after your feet warm up. Do not let a size label overrule pain or instability in the particular shoe. New shoes may soften slightly, but they should not require painful “breaking in” to become wearable.

When length measurement is not enough
A home heel-to-toe result establishes length only. If width is a concern, measure width as well or arrange a professional assessment; the cited guidance does not treat a length-only number as a way to determine the needed width or depth. This matters when your feet are unusually wide or narrow, when one foot differs markedly from the other, or when the toe shape does not match the shoe’s front.

A fitter can assess the foot and the device together rather than relying on a generic conversion chart.
Adjust the method for the shoes and activity
Athletic and walking shoes
Measure in the socks and with any insole used for the activity. Leave the approximate thumb’s width recommended in athletic-footwear guidance, then test the shoes with the movements you expect: walking, running, court changes of direction or gym work. The foot may move more during vigorous activity, so heel security and toe clearance deserve particular attention. Adjustable laces can help hold the midfoot while preserving room at the toes.
Work, safety and hiking footwear
Use the actual work or hiking socks, including a thicker pair if that is what you will wear. Check that the toe box remains comfortable when standing for long periods and that the heel does not slide on slopes or stairs. If protective toe caps, orthoses or other inserts are required, include them during fitting; they can alter both usable length and depth.
Dress shoes and sandals
Thin socks or no socks can produce a different result from the socks used for everyday shoes. For sandals, check that the toes do not extend over the front and that straps hold the foot without cutting into it. For pointed or shallow dress shoes, pay particular attention to forefoot width and toe-box depth; a nominally correct length cannot make a restrictive shape comfortable.

Adding length to solve a width problem
Problem: A larger size creates excess space at the toe while the sides still pinch.
Correction: Look for the correct width and toe-box shape, or obtain a professional width assessment.
Ignoring the insole or socks
Problem: The shoe fits during a quick try-on but becomes tight with normal accessories.
Correction: Put the usual socks and required insoles in the shoe before judging length, depth and heel hold.
Trusting the label over discomfort
Problem: You keep a shoe because the printed size seems right despite rubbing or pain.
Correction: Walk in both shoes and reject a shape that causes pressure, slipping or toe contact, subject to the seller’s return terms.
A practical online-ordering workflow
- Measure both feet standing on paper, in the intended socks, preferably later in the day if swelling is normal for you.
- Record both heel-to-longest-toe lengths and identify the larger foot.
- Open the exact model’s size and, if available, width chart. Record the chart’s units and any model-specific instructions.
- Check whether the shoe offers the width, depth and fastening adjustment your feet require. Do not use length to infer a width that the chart does not provide.
- Order only when the seller’s return or exchange terms allow a realistic try-on. Keep the shoes clean and indoors until you have checked the fit.
- Try on both shoes with normal socks, insoles and any braces or orthoses. Stand, walk and test the intended movement.
- Keep the pair only if toe clearance, forefoot width, toe-box depth, heel hold and walking comfort all work together. If one check fails, change the model or width rather than forcing the size label.
Quick reference checklist
- Measure both feet, standing with weight on the foot.
- Use the socks intended for the shoes.
- Measure later in the day when feet commonly swell.
- Mark the back of the heel and the actual longest toe.
- Use the longer foot’s measurement.
- Read the exact brand and model chart.
- Check width, depth and toe-box shape as well as length.
- Allow approximately 1 cm or a thumb’s width beyond the longest toe as a starting point, not a rigid rule.
- Walk in both shoes and check heel security, rubbing, pressure and slipping.
- Get professional help for persistent pain, deformity, required orthoses or uncertain athletic-footwear fit.
What a successful fit should feel like
The right result is a shoe that accommodates the larger foot without forcing the smaller foot to slide, leaves the toes room to move, holds the heel during walking and remains comfortable in the socks and inserts you actually use. Home measurement gives you a sound starting number; the final decision comes from the brand-specific chart and the way the finished pair feels under load and in motion.
