Measure both the spot where the furniture will sit and the full route it must travel to get there. Compare those measurements with the item’s listed width, depth, and height, then mark its footprint on the floor. A piece can fit the room and still fail at a doorway, stair turn, or elevator.
1. Measure the placement area
Get the item’s actual dimensions
Open the current listing for the specific piece you are considering. Note its width, depth, and height, as applicable, and measure the wall and floor area where you plan to place it. Check the retailer’s dimensions for the whole piece rather than estimating from a product photo. Pottery Barn’s furniture measuring guide and Costco’s sofa and sectional guide recommend comparing furniture dimensions with the intended space.

Mark the footprint
Use a tape measure to lay out the piece’s full width and depth on the floor with painter’s or masking tape. A floor plan or retailer room planner can also help you judge scale. Walk around the marked area and consider nearby furniture before deciding that the layout works. Marks and Spencer’s furniture measuring guide also suggests using a floor plan or planner.
2. Check what the furniture will affect
With the proposed footprint marked, check whether the furniture would obstruct access to electrical outlets, vents, light switches, or thermostats. Include the surrounding furniture in your layout check: a piece may fit its allotted space but leave too little room for the arrangement to work as intended. 3. Measure the complete delivery route
Start at the building entrance and trace the route to the room where the item will go. Measure each doorway and narrow point, not just the front door. Check the usable opening and account for fixed features that reduce clearance, such as door handles, handrails, radiators, or lights.
- Doorways and halls: Measure the opening and the narrowest usable width along each passage.
- Turns and landings: Check the space available to pivot the piece at corners, on stairs, and at landings.
- Stairs and overhead clearance: Measure stair width and note ceilings or overhangs that could limit movement.
- Elevators: If the route uses one, measure both the door opening and the interior.

4. Compare dimensions and delivery orientations
A doorway measurement by itself cannot tell you whether a large item will make it through. Consider the furniture’s width, depth, and height against each bottleneck, and how it may need to be angled or turned through an opening. A tight corner or stair landing can be more restrictive than a straight passage.

5. Use a simple fit checklist
- You have the current listed dimensions for the exact furniture piece.
- The taped footprint fits the intended spot and works with nearby furniture.
- Outlets, vents, switches, and thermostats remain accessible.
- You have measured every doorway, hall, turn, stair, landing, and elevator on the route.
- You have included fixed obstacles and considered how the item may be oriented at tight points.
- You have asked the retailer about any uncertain clearance or delivery step.
