How to Measure Your Kitchen for a Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Measure the refrigerator opening at its narrowest width, lowest height and usable depth, then compare those numbers with the exact model’s case, door and handle dimensions. Before ordering, also verify door-swing space, manufacturer-required ventilation and connection clearances, and the entire delivery route from your entrance to the kitchen. A nominal “36-inch” opening is not a guarantee that every side-by-side refrigerator will fit.

What you need to measure

A side-by-side refrigerator can fit between the cabinets yet fail when its hinge reaches a low soffit, its doors strike a wall, or the delivery team cannot turn it through a hallway. Treat the project as four separate checks: the appliance opening, operating space, installation clearances and delivery route.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Opening: finished-floor-to-obstruction height, wall-to-wall width and back-wall-to-front depth.
  • Appliance dimensions: the exact model’s case depth, depth with doors and depth with handles, plus height including hinges.
  • Operation: room for both doors to open as the manufacturer’s diagrams require, including clearance from an island, wall or countertop.
  • Installation: ventilation space and room for the water line, power cord and any other connections specified in the model’s instructions.
  • Delivery: the narrowest doorway, hallway, turn and other constriction between the outside entrance and the final position.

Have a rigid or retractable measuring tape, pencil and paper (or a phone note), a straightedge for checking obstructions, and the refrigerator’s specification sheet and installation manual. Whirlpool includes a measuring tape among the supplies for this task. Record every measurement with its location and whether it is a clear opening or an obstruction-to-obstruction distance.

Measure the refrigerator opening

1. Find the narrowest width

Measure the distance between the nearest fixed obstructions, not just the width at eye level. Take readings near the floor, at the middle of the opening and near the top. Cabinets can be out of square, walls can bow, and trim can reduce the usable width. Use the smallest reading for your comparison.

  • Easy grip design: extensive rubber overmold provides a comfortable grip and impact resistance
  • Easy read fractions: fractions printed on the blade in alternating colors and heights for quick, easy measurements
  • Includes: (1) CMHT37443S Tape Measure

Include anything that projects into the opening: cabinet face frames, baseboards, crown or side molding, countertop overhang, and a wall that is not perfectly parallel. If a door casing or decorative trim can be removed, note that separately rather than silently counting on its removal.

2. Measure height from the finished floor

Measure from the surface on which the refrigerator will actually stand to the lowest obstruction above it. That may be the underside of a cabinet, a soffit or a countertop. Measure at the left, center and right sides and keep the lowest result. Account for flooring that is already installed and for flooring that will be added before the refrigerator arrives.

Compare this number with the model’s height including the top hinge. GE identifies “height to top of hinge” as a key side-by-side measurement; a cabinet opening that clears the refrigerator case may still be too low for the hinge cover.

3. Measure usable depth

Measure from the back wall to the nearest front obstruction, such as the countertop edge, cabinet face or island. Take separate readings on the left and right if the space is irregular. Note whether the wall has a baseboard, outlet box or other projection that changes the distance at the refrigerator’s lower or upper section.

Depth is not one number on a specification sheet. Keep these definitions separate:

Dimension label What it includes Why it matters
Case depth The cabinet body, generally excluding doors and handles Shows how far the refrigerator box occupies the opening
Depth with doors The case plus closed doors Determines how far the front projects before handles are counted
Depth with handles The refrigerator with its handles installed Determines projection into a walkway or past a counter

GE’s sizing guidance calls out case depth less the door handle as a comparison measurement, while other manufacturers publish separate door and handle depths. Use the definitions in the selected model’s specification sheet rather than assuming that “counter-depth” or “standard-depth” describes the actual projection.

Use general size ranges only as a starting point

Whirlpool describes side-by-side refrigerators generally as about 30 to 36 inches wide, 66 to 70 inches high and 29 to 35 inches deep. Those figures are broad categories, not an opening requirement and not a promise that a refrigerator marketed for a particular cabinet width will fit it. Hinge height, door curvature, handles and required clearances can change the result.

For a concrete illustration, Samsung’s fit guide lists model RS28CB7600 at 35 7/8 inches wide, 70 5/8 inches high with hinge and 33 3/4 inches deep with a recessed handle. That is a specification for that model, not a standard dimension for all side-by-side refrigerators. Before making a decision, replace the example with the exact model number you intend to order.

Comparison Opening measurement Model value to check
Width Narrowest obstruction-to-obstruction width Overall width, plus the side clearances required by the installation instructions
Height Lowest finished-floor-to-obstruction height Height including hinge or hinge cover
Depth Back wall to counter, cabinet or island Case depth, door depth and handle depth as separately listed
Front clearance Space available in front and beside the opening Door-open dimensions and fixed-wall or island clearance in the manual

Check the doors in your actual kitchen layout

Measure open, not just closed

A refrigerator can fit with both doors shut and still be unusable if one door cannot open far enough to remove a shelf or drawer. Review the manufacturer’s door-open diagrams for the model. Check the left and right doors separately because a wall, tall cabinet, countertop return or island may restrict one side more than the other.

Mark the refrigerator’s footprint on the floor with painter’s tape. From that outline, project the door arcs shown in the manufacturer’s diagram. Confirm that the open doors will not hit:

  • A fixed wall or cabinet side beside the refrigerator
  • The end of a countertop or a projecting handle
  • An island, peninsula or dining table opposite the refrigerator
  • A nearby appliance or a doorway that must remain usable

GE specifically highlights door clearance from islands and walls for side-by-side models. Whirlpool’s installation manual also gives a fixed-wall clearance recommendation for the covered product. These are model-specific requirements; do not substitute a generic “door needs a few inches” rule.

Check the hinge side and swing direction

Confirm which way the doors are hinged and whether the model permits a reversal. If the refrigerator has a dispenser, water connection or controls in one door, the manufacturer may limit reversal or require a particular configuration. Use the model’s installation instructions to verify the final orientation before you order.

Good sewing tool, accurate tape measuring for sewing, tailoring, body, waist measurement or measuring any curved surface. can provide you accurate measurements, suitable for a seamstress, a crafter, a quilter or whoever just need a flexible measuring tape

Leave enough room to level the appliance and to move it forward for service without trapping the doors against a wall. The required service space is not necessarily the same as the opening width, so record it as a separate item on your worksheet.

Apply the model’s ventilation and connection clearances

Refrigerators need specified space for airflow and for the water and electrical connections behind or beside the cabinet. Clearance recommendations differ by manufacturer and model, so the selected model’s current installation instructions control.

Published example Clearance stated in the cited guidance How to use it
Whirlpool manual W11484052, revision E (document dated 2024-06) 1/2 inch at each side and the top, 2 inches behind, and at least 2 inches at a fixed wall depending on the model Use only for the product covered by that manual; it is not a universal side-by-side rule
Samsung installation guidance At least 3/8 inch at the sides and top and 1 inch behind, plus wall clearance where a door could hit Confirm that the figures apply to your exact model and installation configuration

The different figures demonstrate why a clearance copied from another refrigerator can produce a wrong fit. Add the applicable side, top and rear spaces to the appliance dimensions when you compare them with the opening. Check where the outlet, shutoff valve and water line sit; a recessed outlet or a manufacturer-specified connection zone can change the usable rear depth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compress the refrigerator against a wall to make the doors line up with the cabinets. A smaller gap than the manual permits can restrict airflow, prevent leveling, pinch a line or stop a door from opening to its designed angle.

Measure the delivery route before ordering

The kitchen opening is only the final checkpoint. Measure the complete route from the location where the truck or carrier will hand over the appliance to the refrigerator’s final position. Whirlpool and Samsung both emphasize route measurement.

Record every constriction

  1. Measure the exterior entrance and the interior side of the threshold.
  2. Measure each doorway on the route, using the actual clear width between stops and trim.
  3. Measure hallway width and ceiling height where the refrigerator may need to tilt.
  4. Measure the inside and outside of every turn, including stair landings and narrow corners.
  5. Check gates, railings, light fixtures, low beams and other objects that reduce the vertical or horizontal opening.
  6. Identify the narrowest point and compare it with the delivery dimensions supplied for the exact model.

Do not assume that a refrigerator’s advertised width is its transport width. Packaging can make the shipment larger, while removing the doors can make the cabinet easier to move. Check the delivery requirements to learn whether the doors can or must be removed, who is responsible for that work and whether removing them affects the water or electrical connections. If doors are removed, measure the remaining cabinet and the detached door assemblies as the delivery instructions require.

Plan the final turn into the opening

Measure the distance from the last hallway to the refrigerator opening and identify where the appliance must rotate. A straight doorway measurement may pass while the turn fails because the refrigerator is deep. Sketch the route with the narrowest width at each turn, and give the installer the sketch and model number if the fit is close.

Compare two or more refrigerator models correctly

When models are being considered, make one worksheet row per model and compare the same six axes. Never compare one model’s case depth with another model’s handle depth.

Axis Question to answer Evidence to record
Width Does the body fit the narrowest opening after required side space is included? Overall width and model-specific side clearance
Height Does the hinge clear the lowest obstruction from the finished floor? Height with hinge, leveling range if stated, and top clearance
Depth Where will the case, doors and handles end relative to counters and walkways? Case, door and handle depths using the manufacturer’s definitions
Door operation Can both doors open to the required angle without striking a wall or island? Door-open diagram and fixed-wall or island clearance
Installation Is there room for airflow and for water and electrical connections? Current installation instructions for that model
Transport Can the packaged or prepared appliance pass every route constriction? Delivery dimensions and door-removal instructions

If a specification sheet uses an unfamiliar term, ask the manufacturer which physical points its measurement includes. A dimension that omits handles cannot be used to predict the projection into a walkway when the handles are installed.

Write a fit worksheet and verify it

Before placing the order, write the following values in one place. This prevents a common mistake in which the opening was measured for one model and the order was placed for another.

  • Narrowest opening width, with the measurement location
  • Lowest finished-floor-to-obstruction height
  • Usable depth to the counter, cabinet, wall or island
  • Any trim, molding, overhang, baseboard or flooring that changes those values
  • Exact model number and the source of its specification sheet
  • Model width, hinge height, case depth, door depth and handle depth
  • Required side, top, rear and fixed-wall clearances
  • Door-open dimensions and the distance to walls, counters and islands
  • Narrowest delivery-route width and the location of each turn
  • Whether delivery instructions permit or require door removal

Re-measure any borderline value. Have another person read the tape while you hold it level, and photograph unusual obstructions so an installer can see them. If the fit depends on removing trim, changing flooring or using a door-removal procedure, confirm that plan with the manufacturer or installer using the model number and your written measurements before ordering.

Common measurement mistakes and fixes

“The opening is 36 inches, so any 36-inch refrigerator fits.”

A nominal opening does not account for the model’s actual width, hinge shape, side ventilation or door-swing requirement. Use the narrowest measured width and the exact specification sheet, then add the clearances required by that model’s manual.

“The case depth is the refrigerator’s front edge.”

Doors and handles extend beyond the case. Compare the case, door and handle dimensions separately with the counter and walkway, and use the door-open diagram for operation.

“The kitchen opening is the only route measurement.”

A refrigerator can fit the cabinets but fail at an exterior door, hallway or turn. Measure the full route and identify the narrowest point before scheduling delivery.

“One clearance number works for every brand.”

Published guidance differs. For example, the cited Whirlpool and Samsung recommendations use different side, top and rear values. Follow the current instructions for the chosen model rather than copying a number from a different refrigerator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The floor is level and the walls are square.”

Uneven flooring and bowed walls reduce the usable opening. Measure at multiple points, use the smallest result and include flooring, trim and molding in the notes.

When to get model-specific help

Ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer to review the measurements when the opening is only slightly larger than the appliance, a fixed wall is close to a door, the route requires a sharp turn, or door removal is necessary. Provide the complete model number, every opening and route measurement, photos of obstructions, and the intended door orientation. A written fit check is especially valuable when the refrigerator will be delivered through a finished doorway or when cabinets cannot be altered easily.

Final pre-order check

  1. Confirm the exact model number, not only the product family or advertised width.
  2. Use the smallest width and height readings from the opening.
  3. Compare hinge height, case depth, door depth and handle depth using matching definitions.
  4. Verify door-open clearance at walls, counters and islands.
  5. Apply the model’s ventilation and connection clearances.
  6. Measure every delivery doorway, hallway, turn and threshold.
  7. Confirm door-removal and delivery requirements.
  8. Save the completed worksheet and the model’s installation instructions for the installer.

Only after all eight checks agree should you place the order. The result you want is not merely a refrigerator that can be pushed into the opening, but one that can be delivered safely, ventilated correctly, leveled and opened fully in everyday use.
