Measure the appliance opening, the space needed to use the appliance, and the entire delivery route before you order. Record the smallest height and width you find, compare those measurements with the exact model’s installation sheet and boxed dimensions, then verify utilities and door swing. A cabinet opening that looks large enough can still fail at a hallway turn, hinge clearance, countertop, stairway, or hookup.
What to measure before you buy
A large appliance has three different fit problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Installation fit: The appliance must fit the opening or cabinet cutout in height, width, and depth.
- Operating fit: Doors, drawers, controls, vents, and service areas need room after the appliance is installed.
- Delivery fit: The appliance or its packaging must pass through every entrance, doorway, hallway, turn, stair, and other restriction between the vehicle and the kitchen.
Measure all three. A product’s listed width is not a guarantee that it will enter your home, and an appliance that fits an opening may be unusable if its door strikes an island or adjacent wall.
Tools and information to gather
- A rigid measuring tape long enough for the room and delivery path.
- A notepad or phone for recording each measurement and its location.
- The exact model number, not merely a product family or brand name.
- The model’s specification sheet and installation instructions.
- Access to the retailer or delivery company’s transport and installation rules.
The Home Depot’s kitchen-appliance guide, updated September 23, 2026, specifically recommends using a measuring tape and checking the route from start to finish. If you need to pull out an existing appliance to see the cavity, follow safe instructions for disconnecting electricity, water, gas, or other services. Do not move or disconnect a heavy appliance casually; arrange qualified help when the installation requires it.

Step 1: Measure the installation opening
Measure the space where the appliance will live, not just the front face of the cabinet.
Height
Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the countertop, cabinet, or enclosure. Take readings at the left and right sides and at other relevant points. Floors and counters can slope, and a molding strip can reduce the usable height. Use the shortest measurement for your comparison.
Width
Measure between the cabinets or side walls at the top, middle, and bottom. Cabinet boxes may not be perfectly parallel, and a counter lip or trim can narrow the entrance. Use the narrowest reading. For a dishwasher, Home Depot notes that the cavity can vary from side to side and that width can change from top to bottom; measure inside the opening rather than relying on a nominal cabinet size.
Depth
Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the counter, cabinet, or surrounding trim. Note anything that occupies space behind the appliance, such as a baseboard, outlet box, gas valve, water line, drain, or vent. Compare the available depth with the model’s case depth and with the depth including doors, handles, hinges, coils, or other projections.
Record obstructions and surfaces
Photograph or write down protrusions that a simple width, height, or depth number misses:
- Baseboards, crown molding, side panels, and decorative end caps.
- Countertop overhangs and backsplash thickness.
- Floor transitions or raised thresholds.
- Door hinges, handles, rear coils, and feet on the appliance.
- Existing shelves, pipes, outlets, shutoff valves, and ventilation openings.
GE Appliances recommends checking the narrowest point and accounting for molding and baseboards. That approach is safer than measuring once at eye level and assuming the opening is square.
Step 2: Measure operating clearances
With the appliance closed, mark its intended footprint on the floor or cabinets. Then determine what happens when every door, drawer, rack, or lid is fully open.

Doors and drawers
Measure from the hinge side to the nearest wall, cabinet, island, or traffic path. Check the model’s installation diagram for the clearance needed to open the door to the specified angle and to remove drawers or shelves. A refrigerator may need additional hinge-side space before its crisper drawers can be pulled out. A dishwasher needs enough room for the door to lie open without blocking a walkway. A range needs room for the oven door and must not collide with an island or opposite cabinet.
Controls and upper cabinets
For a range or cooktop, check that knobs, a raised control panel, and the open oven door clear upper cabinets and the countertop edge. The required space above the cooking surface depends on the exact model, fuel type, hood, and local installation rules. Use the model’s instructions rather than a generic clearance number.
Ventilation and service access
Identify every air gap, grille, duct, or rear clearance the instructions require. Do not close off a vent because the appliance technically fits the cabinet. Leave the access needed to reach filters, water connections, drain connections, shutoff valves, and electrical components for maintenance. Installation guidance from Whirlpool and GE Appliances emphasizes that clearances and service access vary by model.
Step 3: Measure the delivery route
Start at the place where the delivery vehicle will leave the appliance and walk the complete route to the installation position. Measure each restriction in sequence; the tightest point controls the result.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Exterior entrance and first doorway
Measure the clear opening from door jamb to door jamb with the door fully open. Do not measure the door slab itself. Record the vertical clearance as well, especially if the appliance must pass under a low porch, lintel, or garage opening.
Interior doorways and halls
Repeat the jamb-to-jamb measurement for every doorway. Include the thickness of the open door, hinges, latches, knobs, and trim that reduce the usable path. Measure hallway width and height at the points where the appliance will actually travel.
Turns, islands, and stairs
At each turn, measure the diagonal or turning space, not just the straight hallway width. A refrigerator may clear a doorway when carried straight but fail when it must rotate into a narrow kitchen. Check islands, peninsula counters, banisters, handrails, wall-mounted shelves, radiators, and light fixtures. GE Appliances specifically lists gates, front doors, hallways, islands, and stairs as route checks; its guidance also calls out knobs, latches, and shelves.

Ask for transport dimensions
Installed dimensions and packaged dimensions are different. Ask the seller for the appliance’s transport or boxed height, width, and depth, including pallet or protective packaging if applicable. Home Depot advises confirming that the appliance or its box clears the narrowest point on the route. If the route is tight, ask whether the delivery team transports the appliance upright, on its side, or with packaging removed; do not assume a crew can change the method.

Confirm removal policies
Ask the delivery provider whether doors, handrails, packaging, or an existing appliance can be removed and who is responsible for putting them back. Policies vary by retailer, location, and service tier. Costco’s measuring guidance recommends planning for door removal when necessary, but permission and labor conditions must be confirmed before delivery day.
Step 4: Compare your notes with the exact model
Create a side-by-side comparison before placing the order. Use the model’s installation instructions as the controlling document.
| Check | Your measurement or condition | What to compare in the model documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Opening height | Shortest floor-to-counter or cabinet reading | Overall height, including adjustable feet, hinges, and top trim |
| Opening width | Narrowest cabinet-to-cabinet reading | Overall case width and any required side clearance |
| Available depth | Back wall to the front obstruction | Case depth, door and handle depth, rear projections, and required rear gap |
| Cutout dimensions | Inside measurements for a built-in, cooktop, dishwasher, or wall oven | Required cutout height, width, depth, support, and ventilation |
| Door or drawer movement | Distance to walls, islands, and opposite cabinets | Hinge-side clearance, opening angle, drawer travel, and removal clearance |
| Delivery route | Smallest doorway, turn, stair, or height restriction | Packaged or transport dimensions and delivery orientation |
| Utilities | Outlet, water, drain, gas, and vent locations | Connection type, location, reach, shutoff access, and model-specific requirements |
If a dimension is not stated in the model documentation, treat it as unknown and obtain confirmation from the seller or manufacturer. Do not substitute another model’s dimensions, even within the same brand or product line.
Appliance-specific measuring guidance
Refrigerator or freezer
Measure the opening to the top of the hinge area, not merely to the cabinet ceiling in front of the appliance. Record case depth separately from depth including doors and handles, and note any rear water line or power-cord space. Check the hinge side, the door’s full opening angle, and whether drawers can be removed with the door at the available angle. Confirm ventilation gaps and the space needed to level the unit.

Refrigerator guides from GE Appliances provide category examples for clearance and door swing, but their support material also says that clearances depend on the specific appliance and product specifications. Treat any example as model guidance, not a universal refrigerator rule.
Range
Measure the cabinet opening at the top, middle, and bottom and use the narrowest width. Check the floor level and the distance from the rear wall to the front of the counter. Verify the specified rear clearance, the oven-door swing, and the clearance between the control panel and upper cabinets. For gas models, include the location and bend radius of the gas connection; for electric models, include the receptacle location and cord or conduit requirements.

- QUICK & EASY MEASUREMENTS: Fractions printed on the blade
- ADDED GRIP: Rubber overmold for added grip
Cooktop
Measure the inside of the existing countertop cutout, including its length, width, corner radius, and depth below the counter. A cooktop can fit the visible opening while failing the required space beneath it for a drawer, oven, gas line, or electrical connection. Check clearances above and below, ventilation, support, and the exact installation instructions before cutting or modifying the counter.
Dishwasher
Measure cavity height on both sides, width at the top and bottom, and depth from the back wall to the front of the cabinet. Use the shorter height and narrower width. Check that the floor is level and that the open door will not hit the floor transition, opposite cabinet, or traffic path. Locate the water supply, drain, electrical connection, and shutoff valve; the connection route must meet the model’s length and accessibility requirements.
Wall oven
Measure inside the cabinet opening, not the outside face frame. Record the narrowest width, the shortest height, and usable depth behind the cabinet. Verify the model’s cutout, support, ventilation, electrical connection, and trim requirements. Wall ovens can require cabinet alterations even when their front dimensions appear to match an existing opening.
Verify utilities and installation conditions
Physical dimensions are only one part of a successful installation. Before ordering, identify the utility connection each model requires and compare its location with the installation diagram.
- Electricity: Confirm voltage, amperage, receptacle or hardwire requirements, and whether the connection remains accessible after installation.
- Water: Check supply-line size, shutoff location, connection side, and the permitted reach for refrigerators, ice makers, or dishwashers.
- Drain: Verify drain height, air-gap or loop requirements, and the route to the sink or waste connection.
- Gas: Confirm fuel type, shutoff access, connector requirements, and space for a safe bend without crushing the line.
- Ventilation: Check duct size, exterior termination, makeup-air provisions where required, and clearances around heat-producing appliances.
Whirlpool’s delivery and installation guidance stresses that hookup access, connection reach, and accessible shutoff valves are service-dependent. Retailer installation packages may exclude electrical, gas, carpentry, plumbing, or cabinet modification work. Read the service terms for your location and model before scheduling delivery.

When more than one appliance passes the basic opening test, compare the factors that can still cause installation or delivery trouble.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Overall and boxed size | Does each model fit the opening and the tightest point on the route when packaged? |
| Cutout and ventilation | Which model requires less cabinet work or leaves more usable air and service space? |
| Door and drawer movement | Which hinge direction and opening angle work with the wall, island, counters, and traffic path? |
| Utility compatibility | Can the existing outlet, water, drain, gas, and vent connections reach the specified locations? |
| Delivery and installation | Will the provider transport it through the route, remove obstructions if permitted, and perform the required connection work? |
| Capacity and configuration | For refrigerators and freezers, does the internal layout meet your needs after fit and installation risks are resolved? |
Fit should eliminate incompatible models before capacity, finish, or feature comparisons. A slightly smaller model that preserves door swing and service access is often a more workable choice than one that only fits when every clearance is ignored.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Measuring only the front opening
Symptom: The appliance fits between the cabinets but cannot be pushed fully back or leveled. Fix: Recheck depth, rear projections, outlet boxes, pipes, baseboards, and the model’s required rear gap.
Using one width reading
Symptom: The appliance enters at the top but binds at the floor or countertop. Fix: Measure top, middle, and bottom and use the narrowest width; inspect trim and side panels.
Ignoring the open door
Symptom: The appliance installs but blocks a walkway or a drawer cannot open. Fix: Mark the full door and drawer travel on the floor and compare it with the manufacturer’s hinge and opening requirements.
Checking the appliance but not the box
Symptom: The product fits the kitchen but cannot pass a doorway or turn while packaged. Fix: Obtain boxed or transport dimensions and measure the route again, including height at stairs and turns.
Assuming installation service solves every problem
Symptom: Delivery arrives but the crew cannot connect utilities or remove an obstruction under the service terms. Fix: Confirm exactly what the provider includes, which connections must already exist, and whether door or railing removal is allowed.
Disconnecting an existing appliance unsafely
Symptom: A rushed move creates a water leak, gas hazard, electrical hazard, or injury risk. Fix: Follow the existing appliance’s shutdown instructions and use qualified plumbing, gas, electrical, or delivery help when required.
Printable pre-order checklist

- Measure every doorway jamb to jamb, hallway, stair, ceiling restriction, and tight turn.
- Check knobs, latches, handrails, shelves, islands, thresholds, and other fixed obstacles.
- Obtain packaged or transport dimensions and confirm the delivery orientation.
- Compare all measurements with the model’s specification sheet and installation instructions.
- Verify outlet, water, drain, gas, and vent compatibility and connection reach.
- Read the delivery and installation provider’s rules for your location.
- Resolve any unknown dimension or clearance with the seller or manufacturer before ordering.
What a successful measurement gives you
At the end of the process, you should have three records: the smallest usable installation dimensions, the clearances needed to operate and service the appliance, and the narrowest point on the delivery route. Match all three to the exact model and its boxed dimensions, then verify utilities and service conditions. If any one of those comparisons fails or remains unknown, pause the order rather than relying on a nominal appliance size.
