To estimate your bra size at home, measure around your underbust and the fullest part of your bust with a soft, flexible tape, then check those measurements against the size chart for the brand and country you plan to shop. Treat the result as a starting point: the bra’s fit and comfort on your body matter more than the label.
What you need before measuring
- A soft, flexible measuring tape.
- A mirror, so you can check that the tape stays level around your body.
- A non-padded bra, as recommended in Wacoal America’s at-home calculator instructions.
Wacoal’s instructions also say to “Breathe normally when measuring.” Keep the tape secure but not tight, and do not compress breast tissue to make the tape fit.

How to measure your bra size at home

Measure your underbust
Place the tape around your body where the bra band sits, directly beneath your breasts. Check in the mirror that it runs level across your back. Keep it comfortably secure without pulling it tight, breathe normally, and record the measurement as it reads rather than rounding it down.

Measure the fullest part of your bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust. Keep it level and close to your body, but do not flatten or compress breast tissue. Record this measurement too.

Use the right size chart
Enter both measurements into the brand’s calculator or compare them with that brand’s size chart. Check which country’s sizing system the chart uses. The guidance from Wacoal America and Breast Cancer Now does not establish a universal conversion formula, and size labels can vary by brand, style, and measuring approach.
Wacoal America’s calculator instructions say the overbust measurement should be greater than the underbust measurement and advise checking the measurements again if it is not. Treat that as a data-entry check for its calculator, not a universal rule for resolving every measuring difficulty.

Check how the bra fits on your body
Try the bra on and assess how it feels while standing and moving. A calculator result is an estimate, not proof that a particular bra fits. Wacoal UK’s fitting guidance offers these practical clues:
- Band: It should sit horizontally across your back and feel firm but comfortable. If it rides up, Wacoal UK suggests trying a smaller back size; if it feels painfully tight, it suggests trying a larger one.
- Cups: They should enclose breast tissue without spill or discomfort. Spillage may be a reason to try a larger cup; wrinkles or gaping may be a reason to try a smaller one. These are clues, not proof that cup size alone is the issue.
- Straps: They should feel secure and comfortable without digging into your shoulders or slipping off.
- Underwires, if present: They should rest against the ribcage beneath the breast tissue and lie flat against the breastbone. They should not dig in or sit away from your chest. If wires are uncomfortable, a non-wired style may be worth trying.
If the measurement or fit still feels wrong
Recheck that the tape was level, that you did not pull it too tight, and that the bust measurement did not compress tissue. Then compare the result with the exact brand and country size chart you intend to use. If you are choosing between two sizes or styles, compare band stability, cup coverage, strap comfort, wire placement if applicable, and comfort as you move. A different size or style may fit better; the label alone cannot settle the question.

These steps are for estimating size and checking garment fit, not diagnosing breast pain. Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust notes that an ill-fitting bra is one common cause of breast pain and discomfort, but that does not mean changing size will address every cause. Seek appropriate clinical guidance if pain persists.
