Use multi-angle stereo imagery to measure the height of identifiable smoke-plume features, then use repeat observations to describe change over time. NASA’s Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) is the key satellite instrument for the geometric measurement: its nine cameras view the same scene from different directions, and the apparent displacement of a plume feature between views (parallax) is converted to elevation. The MINX analysis tool adds local plume-height and motion retrievals. Lidar observations from CALIOP provide a complementary vertical aerosol profile, including sensitivity to optically thin layers.
A single satellite pass can provide a height field and, in suitable scenes, motion vectors. It cannot by itself prove continuous growth through a day. “Growth” must be defined—rising top, changing vertical distribution, expanding horizontal area, or downwind movement—and measured with observations whose repeat timing matches that question.

Decide what “plume height” and “growth” mean
Satellite products do not all report the same physical quantity. Before downloading data, write a one-sentence metric definition. This prevents a valid measurement from being compared with an incompatible model or sensor result.

Plume-feature or plume-top height
MISR stereo retrievals assign elevation to visible, matchable structures in the smoke plume. A reported maximum may be treated as a plume-top estimate only when the feature-selection and quality rules justify that interpretation. It is not automatically the highest aerosol in the atmosphere or the height used by a dispersion model.

Aerosol-layer height
CALIOP’s lidar profiles describe the vertical distribution of aerosol along its narrow ground track. A layer midpoint, base, top, or backscatter-weighted height can each be legitimate, but they answer different questions from a stereo feature height. Lidar can detect optically thin smoke that is difficult to identify as a high-contrast feature in passive imagery.
Injection height
An injection-height parameter in a chemistry or smoke-transport model represents how emissions are placed into the atmosphere. A measured visible feature height is not automatically an injection height. If you compare the two, state the conversion or modeling assumption and keep the definitions separate.
Four meanings of growth
- Top growth: an increase in the highest consistently defined plume feature.
- Vertical redistribution: a change in the number, thickness, or altitude of aerosol layers.
- Lateral growth: an increase in mapped plume area or width.
- Downwind evolution: movement, rise, or spreading along the transport direction.
Use the same definition at every observation time. Changing from a feature maximum in one scene to a lidar layer top in the next creates an apparent trend that is really a metric change.

NASA’s MISR Plume Height Project now directs users to the MISR Enhanced Research and Lookup Interface (MERLIN), hosted by NASA’s Atmospheric Science Data Center. Treat the archive as a historical resource, not a complete real-time catalog.
How MISR derives height from parallax
MISR carries nine cameras pointed at different viewing angles. A smoke structure at altitude appears in a different position in each camera image because the sight lines are different. The horizontal displacement between matched views is parallax. With the instrument’s viewing geometry and the feature’s geolocation, that displacement is converted into an elevation estimate.
NASA atmospheric scientist Ralph Kahn summarized the principle: “By taking data at all of these angles, we are able to make use of parallax to estimate the height of plumes.” The method is geometric: it does not infer height merely from how bright, dark, or thermally intense the smoke appears.
The standard MISR stereo product described in a 2007 paper uses a 1.1-kilometre geolocated grid and quantizes height at approximately ±560 metres. Those specifications belong to that described product and should not be presented as a universal accuracy guarantee for every MISR or MINX retrieval. Scene contrast, matching quality, viewing geometry, clouds, and feature selection all affect the usable result.

Step-by-step workflow for a defensible measurement
1. Locate the fire and candidate smoke scene
Start with a fire-detection or imagery product to establish where and when the event occurred. MODIS observations can provide fire context. Then identify a MISR overpass that actually contains the smoke plume, rather than assuming that a fire report guarantees satellite coverage.
- Record the fire coordinates, observation date, and time zone.
- Mark the visible smoke extent and likely downwind direction.
- Note clouds, bright surfaces, terrain, and other features that could obscure or mimic smoke.
Confirm scene and product availability through NASA’s data interface before designing a case study. A missing overpass, cloud-obscured plume, or low-contrast scene cannot be repaired by processing alone.
2. Verify that MISR geometry is suitable
Check that the plume is visible in multiple MISR camera views and that the scene contains features that can be matched. Stereo retrieval depends on identifiable structure; a uniform, diffuse haze may not provide reliable correspondences. Keep the camera set, acquisition time, and geolocation metadata with the analysis.
3. Retrieve height with MISR stereo and MINX
Use the multi-angle imagery to match the same plume structures across views. MINX supports detailed local retrievals of plume height and motion. The output should be treated as a field of retrieved feature elevations, with quality flags and gaps preserved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not fill unmatched pixels by assuming they have the height of neighboring smoke. Mark areas with insufficient contrast, cloud contamination, or ambiguous matches as missing, and retain the retrieval’s native spatial resolution and uncertainty description.
4. Inspect height and motion together
A height map tells you where identifiable features are elevated. MINX can also provide plume-level motion vectors, allowing you to distinguish a tall feature from a feature that has simply moved downwind between image views or processing steps.
Check whether vectors are physically coherent with the observed plume shape. Isolated arrows, abrupt direction changes, or vectors crossing clouds deserve review rather than automatic interpretation. Motion retrieval does not turn a single overpass into a time series.

5. Add CALIOP for vertical context when tracks coincide
CALIOP can show aerosol layers above, within, or below the MISR-retrieved features. Collocate the measurements in space and time, and document the distance between the lidar track and the MISR feature. Differences are expected when the plume evolves between observations or when one product samples a narrow slice while the other maps a wider area.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use compatible definitions when comparing values: for example, do not compare a MISR feature maximum with a CALIOP layer midpoint without explaining why that comparison is meaningful. The 2024 multisource assessment emphasizes that products use different methods and collocation approaches.
6. Build a time series only from suitable repeat observations
For each observation, hold constant the height definition, quality thresholds, spatial domain, and coordinate convention. Store the acquisition time, local overpass time, sensor, product version, and whether the value is a feature top, layer top, mean height, or another statistic.
Compute change only after confirming that the scenes sample comparable parts of the plume. A later scene may be farther downwind, so an apparent height difference could represent plume aging rather than growth at the fire.
What “growth” can—and cannot—be inferred from MISR
MISR’s cited swath is about 380 kilometres, and Terra’s equator crossing is around 10:30 a.m. local time. The instrument therefore offers valuable snapshots but not continuous within-day monitoring. Sparse overpasses can miss a rapid morning rise, afternoon collapse, or short-lived lofting event.

A defensible growth claim needs repeat observations with temporal coverage appropriate to the process. If you have only two MISR scenes, report a change between those scenes and the elapsed time; do not describe an uninterrupted growth curve. If observations are separated by different local times or weather conditions, state that limitation.
Height growth
Use the same statistic—for example, the 95th percentile of accepted feature heights within a defined plume region—at each time. A single maximum is sensitive to one questionable match and should be accompanied by the number of valid retrievals and a quality screen.

Vertical redistribution
Use CALIOP or another profile-capable observation to track layer structure. Report layer boundaries and the method used to identify them. A thicker layer is not necessarily a higher layer, and a stronger lidar return is not necessarily more smoke mass without additional assumptions.
Lateral expansion and transport
Map plume area using a consistent smoke mask and projection. Pair the area measurement with motion vectors or wind information so that downwind translation is not mistaken for local expansion.
Comparing observations without mixing unlike quantities
| Comparison question | What to document | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieval physics | Geometric stereo or lidar profile | Parallax height and backscatter-derived layer height respond to different observables |
| Height definition | Feature, top, base, midpoint, mean, percentile, or model injection height | Equal numbers can represent different atmospheric quantities |
| Spatial support | Grid cell, plume segment, lidar footprint, or scene-wide statistic | Small-scale peaks may disappear when averaged over a larger area |
| Time support | Acquisition timestamp, local time, and separation between observations | Smoke can rise and advect substantially between samples |
| Motion availability | Whether vectors are retrieved and how they were quality controlled | Movement helps interpret whether a height change is local growth or transport |
| Validation and collocation | Distance, time window, cloud screening, and matching criteria | Non-collocated measurements should not be treated as direct validation |
The 2024 Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics assessment notes that multisource products differ in methods and collocation. Compare the processing definitions before comparing the numerical heights.
Accessing historical MISR plume retrievals
The MISR Plume Height Project database documents all digitizable MISR-observed smoke plumes globally for 2008–2011 and for the summers—June, July, and August—of 2017 and 2018. NASA/JPL directs users to MERLIN for access.
These periods are useful for reproducing historical cases, evaluating methods, or assembling a constrained sample. They are not evidence that every fire, year, or overpass has a retrieval. For a new event, verify that a scene exists and that the plume is suitable before promising a height result.
A NASA Technical Reports Server record describes a global analysis of more than 23,000 MISR-derived wildfire smoke-plume injection heights. That figure is the size of the published analysis, not a current MERLIN archive count and not a guarantee that a particular fire has an available retrieval.
Quality-control checklist
- Scene confirmation: the selected MISR acquisition visibly contains the target smoke.
- Feature identifiability: matched structures have adequate contrast in the required camera views.
- Cloud and terrain screening: clouds, bright surfaces, and topography are flagged or excluded.
- Native resolution retained: do not imply finer detail than the product grid supports.
- Quality flags preserved: keep rejected and uncertain retrievals separate from accepted values.
- Definition recorded: state whether each height is a feature, layer, or model quantity.
- Time and location recorded: include UTC, local time, coordinates, and plume segment.
- Collocation documented: give the spatial and temporal separation for MISR–CALIOP or ground comparisons.
- Sampling limitation stated: explain what the overpass schedule cannot resolve.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reading height from an image’s apparent vertical position
Perspective, terrain, and viewing angle can make smoke look high without providing a geometric measurement. Use a supported stereo or lidar retrieval instead.
Best Value
Turning a thermal fire detection into plume height
Fire detections locate heat sources. They do not measure the elevation of emitted smoke. Use them to find candidate scenes, then retrieve height independently.
Calling every smoke pixel a measured height
Only features that meet the matching and quality criteria have a stereo retrieval. Preserve gaps and identify the valid subset.
Equating feature height with injection height
Define both quantities and explain any mapping between them. A visible elevated feature may reflect plume rise, transport, layering, or aging rather than the model’s emission-placement parameter.
Claiming continuous growth from morning snapshots
MISR’s approximately 10:30 a.m. local equator-crossing time and roughly 380-kilometre swath constrain temporal coverage. Report discrete observations or add a sensor with repeat timing suited to the process.
Comparing non-collocated MISR and CALIOP values as if they were simultaneous
Align the tracks and acquisition times as closely as possible, then describe the remaining separation. Smoke can change between passes, and the instruments sample different spatial supports.
How to report a result so it can be reproduced
For every reported height or change, include:
- The fire and plume identifier, coordinates, and observation date.
- Sensor, product, processing tool, and product version.
- Camera views or lidar track used and the scene-coverage check.
- The exact height definition and statistic.
- Spatial grid or footprint and the number of valid observations.
- Quality-control exclusions, cloud screening, and any manual feature selection.
- Motion-vector method and coordinate convention, if motion is reported.
- For a change estimate, both acquisition times, elapsed time, and whether the plume regions are collocated.
- Any comparison with a model injection height, including the assumption that connects the two.
A concise result might read: “MISR stereo retrievals from the specified overpass yielded a quality-screened distribution of visible plume-feature heights within the mapped plume segment; MINX motion vectors indicated the observed transport direction. The value is not treated as a model injection height, and the interval to the next observation is reported rather than described as continuous growth.”
Bottom line for satellite-based wildfire plume studies
Use MISR’s nine-angle stereo geometry, with MINX for local height and motion analysis, when the question is the elevation of identifiable plume features. Use CALIOP to add vertical aerosol-profile context, especially for optically thin layers. Use fire products to locate events, not to substitute for height retrievals. Define growth before measuring it, keep the definition constant, and match the observation schedule to the time scale you want to resolve. The resulting numbers are useful only when their feature definition, sampling, quality limits, and collocation are stated alongside them.
