Measure entropy from how a password was generated, not from how complicated its finished text looks. If a cryptographically secure generator chooses uniformly from b possible symbols for l positions, its entropy is H = log2(bl) = l × log2(b) bits. A human-created password does not have a known uniform distribution, so its exact entropy cannot be recovered from the string alone. For those passwords, combine length, breach and dictionary checks, pattern-aware guess estimates, uniqueness, and the attack conditions instead of trusting a single score.

What password entropy actually measures

NIST defines entropy as the amount of uncertainty an attacker faces when determining a secret’s value. A secret with n bits of entropy has the same uncertainty as a uniformly distributed random value of n bits. Entropy therefore describes a probability distribution over possible passwords, not a visual property such as the number of character types in one password.

If every candidate in a known set is equally likely, an attacker must search that set. The larger the set and the more uniform the selection, the more guesses are required on average. If some candidates are favored, the attacker tries those first and the effective strength falls, even when the password contains uppercase letters, digits, and punctuation.

Entropy is not the same as a crack-time promise

Bits are a mathematical description of uncertainty. Converting them into a time estimate requires an attack model: whether guesses are made online or offline, how quickly the verifier accepts attempts, what password-hashing function is used, and what hardware and wordlists the attacker has. A bit figure without those conditions is not a guarantee that an account will resist for a particular number of days.

Calculating entropy for a genuinely random generator

The uniform-choice formula

Use H = log2(bl) = l × log2(b) when a generator makes l independent, uniformly random choices from an alphabet of b possible symbols. The calculation assumes that every symbol is available at every position, each choice is independent, and the random source is strong enough that its output cannot be predicted.

The formula is equivalent to multiplying the number of possible strings, bl, and then taking the base-2 logarithm. It is exact for that distribution; it is not an audit of a password that merely happens to contain the same number of characters.

Worked examples

Generation method Calculation Entropy What the number means
Eight uniformly random characters from 94 printable keyboard characters 8 × log2(94) About 52 bits NIST’s archived 2004 worked example; it describes the generator, not a manually assembled eight-character password.
Twenty uniformly random decimal digits 20 × log2(10) About 66.4 bits Valid only when each digit is selected uniformly and independently.
Twelve uniformly random alphanumeric characters from 62 symbols 12 × log2(62) About 71.5 bits The alphabet must really contain all 62 symbols with equal selection probability.
Four uniformly random words from a 7,776-word list 4 × log2(7,776) About 51.7 bits Each word must be selected independently and uniformly from the full list.

Rounding is appropriate for communication, but keep the assumptions beside the result. Saying only “this password has 71.5 bits” hides whether the value came from a secure generator, a biased list, or a person choosing familiar words.

Check the real choice set

Count the symbols the generator can actually emit, not the character classes it claims to support. If a tool excludes ambiguous characters, applies position rules, favors letters, or uses a restricted word list, use that effective distribution. A generator that advertises 94 characters but silently removes ten has a smaller choice set. A passphrase tool that selects words with unequal frequencies also has less entropy than the simple word-list formula suggests.

Independence matters as well. Generating one random character and transforming it into several positions, or selecting a word and then applying a fixed capitalization rule, does not create as much uncertainty as independent choices. Document the algorithm and source of randomness when you need a defensible estimate.

Why a human-created password has no exact bit count

People do not choose passwords uniformly. They favor names, dictionary words, dates, song titles, keyboard walks, familiar substitutions, and patterns that worked elsewhere. They also adapt passwords to a service, username, employer, or family member. An attacker’s model captures those habits and tests the most probable candidates first.

Visual complexity can be misleading

Summer2026! contains lowercase and uppercase letters, digits, and a symbol, but its season word, year, and final punctuation are predictable. Replacing letters with symbols, capitalizing the first character, or appending a recent year generally adds a small, modeled variation rather than a fresh random choice. A long phrase copied from a quotation can be easier to guess than a shorter sequence of independently selected words.

Length still helps, but only with unpredictable choices

Adding genuinely random characters or words multiplies the number of possibilities. Adding a predictable suffix does not. NIST’s current guidance acknowledges that user-chosen entropy is difficult to estimate and presents a more straightforward approach based primarily on password length and passphrases. Length is a practical proxy, not proof that a human choice is random.

A practical workflow for measuring a password

  1. Identify the creation process. Determine whether a cryptographically secure generator selected every character or word uniformly. If yes, calculate the generator’s entropy and preserve the alphabet, list size, length, and independence assumptions. If a person typed or modified it, label any result as an estimate.
  2. Record length and structure. Count characters or words and note repeated sections, dates, names, substitutions, keyboard patterns, and fixed prefixes or suffixes. Do not convert a character-class checklist into a definitive bit claim.
  3. Check exposure and popularity. The verifier should reject passwords found in breached-password lists, dictionaries, repetitive or sequential-string lists, and context-specific lists containing the service name, username, or other account details. NIST requires these comparisons for new secrets. A password that appears on one of these lists may be guessed immediately regardless of its nominal length.
  4. Model likely guesses. Use a maintained estimator that recognizes words, names, dates, keyboard patterns, repetitions, and common substitutions. Record its guess count or crack-time range together with the assumed online or offline scenario. Treat the output as a model-dependent estimate, not measured fact about the future.
  5. Check reuse and the attack surface. Verify that the password is unique to this account and has not been used on a site that suffered a breach. Credential stuffing turns a strong password reused elsewhere into a direct risk. Also note whether the account has multifactor authentication, login throttling, lockout controls, and alerts.
  6. Replace weak or uncertain secrets. Generate a new random password or a random-word passphrase, save it in a password manager, and use a different value for every service. Do not paste the old password into multiple meters or send it to a remote checker merely to obtain a score.

How to interpret guess counts and crack-time ranges

Online attacks

For an online attack, the limiting factors are login rate limits, multifactor challenges, account lockouts, monitoring, and whether the service permits password spraying. A million guesses may be infeasible against a well-protected login but trivial if an endpoint accepts rapid attempts. An estimator should state the assumed guesses per second or attempts per account; otherwise its time output is ambiguous.

Offline attacks

In an offline attack, the adversary has a password hash or verifier database and can test guesses without contacting the service. The hashing scheme, salt, cost parameters, specialized hardware, and attacker budget dominate the rate. Fast, outdated hashing permits vastly more guesses than a deliberately slow password-hashing function. A crack-time estimate must name the assumed verifier and hardware class to be meaningful.

Average, median, and worst-case positions

If a password is ranked among an estimator’s guesses, the rank is not a promise that an attacker will try exactly that many attempts. Attackers use different dictionaries and rules, and a password can be absent from one model but prominent in another. Prefer a range and the model description over a single dramatic number.

Is a long passphrase stronger than a complex short password?

When both are generated unpredictably, compare their actual distributions with the formula rather than their appearance. Four uniformly selected words from a 7,776-word list provide about 51.7 bits, while eight uniformly selected characters from 94 symbols provide about 52 bits; those examples are close despite their different formats. Twelve uniformly selected alphanumeric characters provide about 71.5 bits.

Secret style When it is strong Common weakness
Random-character password Every position is independently and uniformly generated from a documented alphabet. People imitate random-looking patterns, shorten the value, or reuse it; a claimed alphabet may not be the real one.
Random-word passphrase Words are selected independently and uniformly from a known list; the passphrase is unique. Quotations, song lines, personal sentences, and hand-picked “random” words are highly modeled.
Human-made complex password It may resist basic rules if it is also long, unique, and absent from popularity lists. Predictable capitalization, substitutions, years, names, and service-specific patterns reduce its guess rank.

For memorized secrets, a longer passphrase is often easier to type and less likely to be modified than a short string with forced symbols. That usability advantage matters because users who cannot remember a secret tend to reuse it or create predictable variations.

What password-strength checkers can and cannot tell you

Useful capabilities

  • Estimate guess rank using dictionaries, breach corpora, names, dates, keyboard walks, repetitions, and substitution rules.
  • Flag context such as a username, organization, product, or service name.
  • Show whether length and structure are helping or whether a common pattern dominates.
  • Compare a candidate against a stated online or offline attack model.

Important limitations

  • A checker cannot infer the true generation history from the finished string. Its bit score is a model output, not a recovered entropy value.
  • It may not contain the newest breach data, the attacker’s private lists, or the language and cultural patterns relevant to you.
  • It cannot account for phishing, malware, keylogging, shoulder surfing, or a compromised device. NIST treats those attacks as outside the scope of its entropy appendix.
  • A remote service could log the password. Prefer a reputable tool that analyzes locally, or test only a generated substitute with the same structure rather than your real credential.

When comparing estimators or generation methods, examine six properties: cryptographic randomness; breach and dictionary coverage; pattern and context recognition; local, non-uploading analysis; transparency of the attack model; and whether the tool helps generate and store unique secrets.

What counts as “enough” entropy?

NIST does not publish one universal bit threshold that makes every user-chosen password safe. The required margin depends on the account’s value, exposure, authentication controls, password-hashing configuration, and whether the secret is unique. A public forum account and an administrator account should not be treated as the same risk, even if their passwords receive identical meter scores.

A practical decision rule

  • For important accounts, use a password manager to generate a unique random secret rather than trying to invent a high-entropy string.
  • For a password you must memorize, choose a long, randomly generated passphrase and avoid quotations, personal facts, and predictable formatting.
  • Reject any candidate found in breached-password, dictionary, repetitive, sequential, or context-specific lists.
  • Enable multifactor authentication and prefer services with throttling and modern password hashing; these controls reduce the consequences of guessing but do not create entropy in the password itself.
  • Change a password when there is evidence of compromise, reuse, or exposure instead of relying on a meter’s historical score.

Why password managers improve real-world entropy

A manager separates memorization from generation. It can create a long random value for each account, remember it without forcing a predictable pattern, and fill it without retyping. NIST guidance specifically notes that allowing paste functionality facilitates password-manager use, which can make stronger memorized secrets more practical.

Protect the manager’s main credential with a long, unique passphrase and multifactor authentication where available. The manager cannot prevent phishing or malware from stealing a password entered into a fake or infected site, so verify the destination and keep devices updated. Its main entropy benefit is making independent random generation and non-reuse easy enough to sustain.

Common measurement mistakes and their fixes

Counting character classes as bits

“One uppercase, one lowercase, one digit, and one symbol” describes a policy, not a probability distribution. Fix: calculate from the generator’s real alphabet, or use a pattern-aware guess estimator for a human choice.

Using the formula on a hand-picked passphrase

Four familiar words do not represent every four-word combination. Fix: use the word-list formula only when a secure process selected each word uniformly; otherwise report length and modeled guess resistance.

Trusting a green meter

Meters differ in data, language, pattern rules, and attack rates. Fix: read the assumptions, check breach and context lists, and keep the password unique.

Ignoring reuse

Entropy protects only the secret you are evaluating. A breach of another service can expose a reused value without any guessing. Fix: assign every account a different generated secret.

Confusing entropy with complete account security

Phishing, malware, keylogging, session theft, weak recovery flows, and poor verifier storage can bypass password uncertainty. Fix: combine strong unique passwords with multifactor authentication, secure recovery methods, device security, and service-side protections.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Write down how the password was generated and whether the choices were uniform and independent.
  2. If the process is documented and random, calculate l × log2(b) and retain the assumptions.
  3. If a person created it, do not assign an exact entropy value from the string alone.
  4. Measure length and identify words, names, dates, repetitions, substitutions, and keyboard patterns.
  5. Check breached-password, dictionary, repetitive, sequential, and context-specific lists.
  6. Run a local, pattern-aware estimator and record its attack model and guess range.
  7. Confirm the secret is unique and review the account’s rate limits, hashing, multifactor authentication, and recovery process.
  8. Replace uncertain credentials with unique values generated and stored by a password manager.

The bottom line on measuring entropy

Entropy is a property of uncertainty in the creation process. The base-2 formula is exact for a known uniform generator, such as independently selected characters or words, but it cannot reveal the true entropy of a human-created password after the fact. For real accounts, the most defensible assessment combines documented generation, length, breach and context screening, pattern-aware guess estimates, uniqueness, and an explicit online or offline attack model. Strong random generation and a password manager usually improve those conditions more reliably than adding another symbol to a password you chose yourself.

NIST’s SP 800-63B-4 glossary and Appendix A explain the distinction between entropy and user-chosen passwords; its archived 2004 formula supplies the 94-character example. NIST IR 8040 discusses empirical password-strength metrics and entropy loss, but its historical experiments are not a universal certification method.
