Measure an AI marketing campaign against qualified opportunities in your CRM—not just clicks, leads, or platform-attributed conversions. Agree with sales on what counts as qualified, connect campaign activity to opportunity records, report attribution rules transparently, and use a randomized holdout when you need to test whether exposure caused additional pipeline. A campaign’s use of AI does not, by itself, show that AI generated the result.
What counts as qualified pipeline?
Qualified pipeline is the value of CRM opportunities that meet a documented qualification and inclusion rule. It is not the same as lead volume, an MQL count, or a platform’s attributed conversion total. The opportunity record provides the revenue anchor; the qualification rule determines which records belong in the measure.

Before launch, marketing and sales should agree on the criteria and lifecycle stages. MQL is a threshold defined by the organization; SQL indicates sales qualification under its process; and opportunity creation is the CRM event used to measure pipeline. Adobe’s lead-generation workbook includes SQL quality and conversion across inquiry, MQL, sales-accepted lead, SQL, and opportunity as campaign metrics, but it does not establish universal stage definitions or targets.

Write a qualification contract
Document the required fit or ICP criteria, evidence of a buyer or use case, sales-acceptance requirements, discovery expectations, and CRM stage that qualifies an opportunity. Also decide how to handle disqualifications, duplicate records, expansions, and opportunities that already existed before the campaign. Preserve sales rejection reasons so you can see which criteria predict downstream progress and adjust the rule deliberately.

A generic lead score or MQL threshold should not be treated as equivalent to a sales-qualified opportunity. The reviewed sources support shared lifecycle definitions and sales qualification, but do not prescribe one checklist that fits every organization.
How should you connect campaign activity to CRM opportunities?
Use stable campaign-member, contact, account, and opportunity identifiers to connect eligible campaign interactions with lifecycle transitions and sales outcomes. For buying committees, associate activity through the account and opportunity relationship rather than treating one contact as the entire purchase journey. Marketo Measure’s reporting guide describes buyer attribution touchpoints linked to opportunity-level analysis.
Retain the records needed to reconstruct the journey and apply your rules consistently:

Set the cohort and baseline before reviewing results. Compare like with like: use consistent opportunity definitions, similar audience or account segments, and cohorts with comparable sales-cycle maturity. Record what the campaign changed—such as creative, audience, budget, channel mix, or follow-up—because those changes can make it difficult to isolate the contribution of the AI component.
Which measurement method answers your question?
Funnel reporting, attribution, and randomized lift are complementary views, not interchangeable proof. Salesforce distinguishes touch-based attribution, which allocates credit among recorded interactions, from funnel-based attribution, which focuses on stage progression. Google Ads describes Conversion Lift as a treatment-versus-control comparison rather than ordinary conversion attribution.
| Method | Question it answers | What to disclose or watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Funnel-stage reporting | Where do prospects progress or fall out between inquiry, qualification, sales acceptance, SQL, opportunity, and win? | Stage definitions, handoffs, and cohort membership must be consistent. |
| Touch-based multi-touch attribution | Which recorded interactions receive credit for opportunity influence under a chosen model? | Credit depends on touchpoint coverage, eligibility, lookback window, and allocation rules. It is not causal proof. |
| Funnel-based attribution | Which interactions are associated with movement between lifecycle stages? | It depends on trustworthy stage events and still follows model and touchpoint rules. |
| Randomized holdout or lift test | Did campaign exposure change outcomes relative to a control group? | Feasibility, sample size, audience contamination, privacy, conversion lag, and outcome matching affect what can be concluded. |
Choose a model to fit the question and name it in reports. Salesforce’s documentation separates touch-based and funnel-based approaches. Adobe’s Marketo Measure guide describes W-shaped attribution for new opportunities and pipeline, and Full Path attribution for closed-won outcomes. These are model choices, not universal evidence that a campaign caused revenue.

What should the campaign report include?
Separate sourced pipeline from influenced pipeline: they answer different questions, and influenced amounts can overlap across campaigns. State the opportunity association method, eligible touches, lookback window, credit allocation, and whether a figure is sourced or influenced. Marketo Measure and Salesforce documentation describe opportunity-oriented attribution approaches; neither makes the selected crediting model a substitute for an experiment.

- Marketing-sourced qualified pipeline: Value of qualifying opportunities whose agreed source rule identifies the campaign or marketing as originating demand.
- Marketing-influenced qualified pipeline: Value of opportunities with eligible campaign interactions under the declared influence rule. Treat this as a crediting view; an opportunity may be influenced by more than one campaign.
- Funnel progression: Counts and rates for inquiry to MQL, MQL to sales-accepted, sales-accepted to SQL, SQL to opportunity, and opportunity to won.
- Quality and efficiency: Sales rejection rate and reasons, qualifying opportunities, qualified pipeline per campaign dollar, and cost per qualified opportunity.
- Downstream outcomes: Closed-won value, win rate, and time to opportunity or close for cohorts mature enough to evaluate.
Adobe’s lead-generation workbook is an older guide that provides metric taxonomy, not current performance benchmarks. No universal conversion target or expected pipeline contribution follows from these measures.
How do you calculate the core measures?
Use one cohort, one qualification rule, and a clearly stated opportunity inclusion rule for each calculation. These are operational definitions, not universal accounting standards.

- Stage conversion rate = records entering the next agreed stage ÷ records entering the prior stage in the same cohort.
- Qualified pipeline = sum of CRM opportunity amounts meeting the documented qualification and inclusion rule. Say whether amounts are unweighted or stage-weighted; do not mix those definitions between reports.
- Cost per qualified opportunity = campaign cost ÷ qualifying opportunities created in the specified cohort.
- Attributed pipeline = opportunity value allocated to a campaign under its declared attribution model and eligibility rules. It is model-dependent.
- Incremental qualified pipeline = treatment-group qualified pipeline minus the appropriate control-group estimate, adjusted for the experiment design and reported uncertainty.
A before-and-after increase is not randomized causal lift. Salesforce’s attribution guidance illustrates how model and window rules determine touch credit; Google’s Conversion Lift materials define lift through treatment and control comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you test whether the campaign caused additional qualified pipeline?
When feasible, randomly assign eligible users, accounts, or regions to treatment and holdout groups. Predeclare the outcome—ideally sales-accepted opportunities or opportunity value—and compare it across the groups. Keep other campaign exposure and sales follow-up consistent, or account for them in the design. Google’s Conversion Lift documentation describes this treatment-control approach and distinguishes it from standard attributed conversions.
Report the group sizes, dates, outcome maturity, absolute difference, and uncertainty. Note audience overlap, privacy constraints, and any modeled delayed outcomes. If the ad platform can optimize or report only on web leads or conversion events, connecting offline CRM outcomes may require lead-matching support. Google documents Enhanced Conversions for Leads as a way to send offline CRM or lead-management data for matching, subject to eligibility and implementation requirements; using that feature does not itself establish incremental qualified pipeline.

Account for long B2B sales cycles
Set reporting cohorts and study duration around the observed conversion lag and sales cycle. Google recommends a study duration that captures average conversion lag and notes that lift results include confidence intervals. Label immature cohorts rather than comparing them as if they had the same opportunity to progress. Do not declare a campaign ineffective—or successful—solely because a short reporting window has not captured later-stage outcomes.
What can you conclude about AI’s contribution?
A campaign-level result measures the campaign as implemented. If AI use coincides with changes to creative, targeting, budget, channel, or sales follow-up, that result cannot isolate AI as the cause. To estimate the AI component specifically, design the comparison so that the AI-enabled intervention is the meaningful difference between treatment and control, while holding other factors as consistent as possible.
No current authoritative statistic establishes a general qualified-pipeline lift for AI marketing campaigns, and no universal qualification threshold, lookback window, sample-size target, or expected conversion rate is established here. Report the observed result and its limits rather than applying an unrelated benchmark or promising a typical lift.
