Measure the garage or parking space at its narrowest and lowest usable points, then compare those measurements with the dimensions of the exact vehicle you plan to park. Check the entrance separately from the interior, and account for mirrors, obstacles, door-opening room, and access to nearby storage. A car may fit between the walls but still be difficult—or impossible—to drive through the opening or use comfortably.
What measurements do you need?
Use the vehicle’s specifications for its exact model year and configuration. Record its length, width, and height, then measure the clear opening and usable space where it will sit. Honda recommends comparing garage or space measurements with a vehicle’s published length, width, and height; its vehicle-buying knowledge center notes that manufacturer websites provide these dimensions in their specifications sections.

Do not assume a published body-width figure includes mirrors or other protruding equipment. Check whether the specification says it includes them, or verify the actual vehicle and configuration. Accessories can also affect dimensions.

How to measure the space
- Measure the entrance. Record the garage-door opening’s clear width and height—not just the nominal door size. Check the narrowest point and any hardware, tracks, or other low or protruding obstacles along the vehicle’s path. Amarr distinguishes the door opening from installation measurements such as sideroom, headroom, and backroom; those installation dimensions do not, by themselves, establish vehicle clearance. - Measure the usable interior. Measure width and depth where the vehicle will actually park. Include intrusions such as posts, shelves, steps, stored items, and cabinets. Check overhead clearance for the vehicle’s height, including any relevant equipment, and note tracks or stored objects that could get in the way.
- Make a sketch. Mark the opening, interior dimensions, ceiling or overhead restrictions, and obstacles. A garage measurement worksheet also recommends recording the vehicle’s make, model, and year.
- Consider the approach. If the space is tight or access is angled, note turning and approach constraints. A vehicle’s length and width alone do not show whether you can line it up and enter without hitting a wall, post, or neighboring vehicle.
- Check how you will use the space. Consider whether the driver and passengers can open the doors and get out, and whether you can reach storage or other items. A vehicle that clears the walls may still leave too little room for these tasks. The sources do not establish one extra clearance that guarantees comfortable use.
Compare each limiting dimension on its own
Check the vehicle against the entrance width and height, interior width and depth, and overhead clearance. Include mirror or protrusion width where relevant. Each is an independent constraint: passing one comparison does not compensate for failing another.

- Entrance: Can the vehicle pass through the opening with its relevant width and height?
- Parking area: Is there enough usable depth and width once obstacles are accounted for?
- Overhead space: Is the vehicle clear of the ceiling, tracks, and stored items?
- Everyday access: Can occupants exit and can you use nearby storage?
If a measurement is close to the vehicle’s dimension, recheck the limiting point directly before relying on the comparison. Use the same measurement approach when comparing more than one vehicle or space; there is no official universal pass/fail score in the cited guidance.
Are standard parking-space dimensions a reliable fit rule?
No single standard should be treated as a guarantee that a particular vehicle will fit. Requirements and recommendations vary by jurisdiction and purpose, and they do not replace measuring the actual space.

- U.S. accessible parking: The U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards apply to regulated accessible spaces, not every private garage or ordinary parking stall. For marked spaces, width is generally measured from the centerline of the markings, with an exception when a space or aisle is not adjacent to another one. The standards specify a minimum width of 96 inches (2440 mm) for an accessible car space and 132 inches (3350 mm) for an accessible van space; a van space may be 96 inches wide when paired with a 96-inch access aisle. These are accessibility requirements, not universal car-fit dimensions. See the ADA Standards, section 502.
- Victoria, Australia: Victorian Government guidance recommends at least 6 metres of length and 3.5 metres of width for a single garage or carport space, and 5.5 metres of width for a double space, measured inside the garage or carport. For tandem arrangements, it says to add 500 mm between spaces. These are jurisdiction-specific design recommendations, not a universal threshold for an existing garage or a particular vehicle. - Parking-garage design: A Federal Highway Administration-hosted report describes a 9-foot stall width as optimum for most self-park applications in its design discussion, citing door opening, convenient access, and alignment margin. For a useful comparison, write down the following for each candidate vehicle and space:

- Vehicle make, model, year, and configuration
- Published length, width, and height, with a note on whether width includes mirrors
- Clear entrance width and height
- Usable interior width and depth
- Overhead restrictions and fixed or stored obstacles
- Approach or turning constraints
- Room needed for doors, occupants, and storage access
The title does not identify a vehicle, measured space, or jurisdiction, so no particular fit or applicable local code can be determined in advance. Vehicle dimensions may vary by year, trim, and equipment; use specifications for the exact vehicle and verify any measurement that could decide the result.
