The practical option is to track waist circumference as an indirect indicator of abdominal fat, using the same location and technique each time. Treat the result as a trend—not a precise reading of fat around your organs.
How to measure your waist at home
Use a flexible tape measure. Healthdirect Australia’s instructions for adults are to measure on bare skin or over no more than one light layer of clothing, breathe out normally, and keep the tape snug without pressing into the skin. Locate the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hipbone, roughly around belly-button level. Healthdirect Australia explains the waist-measurement method.
- Stand upright and relaxed, with your abdomen neither pulled in nor pushed out.
- Find the midpoint between your lowest rib and the top of your hipbone.
- Wrap the tape around your waist at that level, keeping it horizontal and against the skin or one light clothing layer.
- Breathe out normally, then read the measurement without squeezing the tape tight.
- Record the date, measurement and location used. Note relevant context such as unusual bloating.
Measure under similar conditions each time; if possible, avoid measuring just after a meal or when bloated. Different accepted waist-measurement sites exist, so consistent placement matters more than switching methods. The midpoint between the lowest rib and iliac crest may be more sensitive to changes in visceral fat over time, according to the 2026 American Diabetes Association Standards of Care.
What a waist measurement can—and can’t—tell you
Waist circumference is a practical indicator associated with central adiposity, but it does not measure visceral-fat volume directly or distinguish fat around the organs from fat under the skin. A single result can also vary with tape placement and abdominal contents, so compare readings over time rather than treating one value as a diagnosis.

Waist-to-height ratio is another practical estimate. NICE recommends using it alongside BMI for adults with a BMI below 35 kg/m². NICE also says, “Do not use bioimpedance as a substitute for BMI as a measure of general adiposity in adults.” See NICE guideline NG246.
How to interpret adult waist thresholds
Thresholds depend on the population and guideline; they are risk indicators, not diagnoses of visceral fat. Healthdirect Australia’s 2025-reviewed guidance says chronic-disease risk is increased at 80 cm or more for adult women and 94 cm or more for adult men, and greatly increased at 88 cm or more for women and 102 cm or more for men. These are Australian adult thresholds, not universal cutoffs. Healthdirect’s waist-measurement guidance lists them. Its separate visceral-fat guidance describes higher-risk cutoffs as greater than 80 cm and 94 cm; follow the specific source and threshold rather than combining the two formulations.

Can a smart scale measure visceral fat accurately?
Most consumer body-composition scales use bioelectrical impedance (BIA): they estimate body composition from how electrical signals pass through the body. Hydration affects the readings, and a device’s “visceral fat” score may be generated from population-based equations rather than a direct measurement of abdominal fat. A scale can be convenient for observing broad trends when you use the same device under similar conditions, but its score is not a precise individual measurement.
If you already use a BIA scale, treat its visceral-fat figure as supplementary information, follow the manufacturer’s instructions consistently and do not read too much into small changes. Scores from different brands are not necessarily comparable. A tape-measured waist can provide useful complementary context; the Obesity Medicine Association position statement discusses body-composition methods and their limitations.

How often should you measure?
The cited guidance does not establish one ideal home-measurement frequency. Choose a schedule you can sustain, use the same technique and conditions, and compare trends rather than day-to-day fluctuations. There is no need to treat daily or weekly measuring as a medical requirement.

The adult waist thresholds above do not apply to children or pregnant people. Healthdirect also notes limitations for very enlarged abdomens and for some people from non-European backgrounds. If one of these applies, or you are concerned by a reading or find the usual method difficult, ask a healthcare professional for an individualized assessment rather than relying on generic cutoffs.

CT and MRI can distinguish visceral from subcutaneous fat, but they are specialist or research tools, not routine home tests; CT uses ionizing radiation. DXA and clinical BIA can assess body composition in some settings, with varying outputs and limitations. Imaging is not necessary for ordinary home tracking.
