Run the same short survey with people on both sides, add interviews and open comments, then compare the perceptions with observable behavior such as kept commitments, issue recovery, training, co-marketing, referrals and information sharing. Track the results over repeated waves and analyze whether trust changes precede retention, pipeline, margin or expansion changes.
This approach answers two different questions: Do the parties trust each other? and Is the partnership producing business value? Those questions are related, but they are not interchangeable. A reseller can sell well while distrusting a vendor’s forecasts or support, and a new relationship can have high confidence before it has generated meaningful revenue.

What trust means in a channel relationship
Trust is the expectation that the other organization is reliable, capable, transparent and motivated to protect the relationship when circumstances become difficult. In a vendor–reseller partnership, that expectation affects whether people share pipeline information, believe product advice, invest in training, introduce customers, escalate problems early and commit resources to a joint plan.

Trust should therefore be measured separately from economic performance. A 1998 meta-analysis of channel relationships found that trust has a robust relationship with satisfaction and long-term orientation and contributes to those relationship outcomes beyond economic measures. The finding does not establish that a particular trust score will cause revenue growth; it does establish why a financial dashboard alone is incomplete.

The practical unit of analysis is a defined relationship: a vendor, reseller, product line, territory and time window. If the same reseller has very different experiences with two product teams, combine those responses only after checking that the scope is genuinely comparable.
Trust is not the same as satisfaction
Satisfaction asks whether an experience met expectations. Trust asks what a partner expects will happen next and whether it believes the other party will act fairly when incentives conflict. Satisfaction can fall after a single service failure while underlying trust remains intact; repeated undisclosed failures can damage trust even when a quarterly result looks good.
Trust is not the same as performance
Sales, gross margin, retention and pipeline are outcomes that trust may influence. They are not direct measurements of reliability, advice credibility or transparency. Treating them as substitutes hides early warning signs and can reward a relationship that is producing short-term orders while becoming harder to operate.
Build the measurement around six trust dimensions
Use a common five- or seven-point agreement or confidence scale. A five-point scale is usually sufficient for a short partner survey: 1 means strongly disagree or very low confidence and 5 means strongly agree or very high confidence. Keep the wording and response anchors unchanged between waves.
| Dimension | What it tests | Example item | Useful behavioral checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reliability | Whether commitments, responses and operating promises are dependable | This partner does what it says it will do. | Commitments completed on time, response-time adherence, forecast accuracy, missed-deliverable rate |
| Competence and advice | Whether commercial, technical and product guidance is accurate enough to act on | I trust this partner’s advice and recommendations. | Advice-related rework, training completion, certification participation, technical escalation recurrence |
| Transparency | Whether capabilities, limitations, pricing, conflicts and risks are explained clearly | This partner explains capabilities, limitations, pricing and risks clearly. | Completeness of product, pricing and pipeline information; late-disclosed constraints; data corrections |
| Commitment keeping | Whether agreed priorities remain protected when conditions change | This partner protects agreed priorities when conditions change. | Joint-business-plan milestones, allocation decisions, renewal support, agreed escalation follow-through |
| Problem handling | Whether bad news is disclosed and resolved fairly | When something goes wrong, this partner discloses it and works toward a fair resolution. | Issue-resolution cycle time, escalation quality, repeat incidents, documented recovery actions |
| Mutual interest | Whether each side considers the health of the joint business rather than only its own short-term result | This partner considers the health of the joint business, not only its own short-term result. | Shared investment, lead allocation, co-marketing participation, referrals, capability development |
Add a seventh item for advocacy when you want a practical relationship signal: “I would recommend expanding this partnership.” Advocacy is an attitudinal indicator, not proof that expansion is commercially sensible, so report it beside—not instead of—the six dimensions.
Survey both sides, not just the vendor account team
Vendor and reseller perceptions commonly diverge. A vendor may rate its enablement highly while reseller contacts experience slow approvals; a reseller may report strong trust in a sales manager but low trust in pricing decisions made elsewhere. Independent partner surveying and comparison reporting are established channel practices because respondents are more likely to report problems when results are aggregated and their individual answers are not shown to the account team.
Choose respondents deliberately
For each defined relationship, seek at least one commercial and one operational contact on each side whenever possible. A commercial respondent can assess account planning, pricing and lead handling; an operational respondent can assess support, delivery, training and issue recovery. Record role, region, product scope and relationship tenure so you can identify uneven experiences without exposing a person’s identity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Vendor roles can include channel sales, partner operations, technical support and marketing.
- Reseller roles can include an owner or executive sponsor, sales lead, solution architect, delivery lead and marketing contact.
- Do not silently substitute an inactive contact for the person who actually handles the relationship; note the change and the survey wave.
- Set a minimum reporting rule, such as two completed responses per side, before publishing a segment comparison. Use a higher threshold where the relationship is sensitive.
Define the time window
Ask respondents to consider a specific period—usually the previous quarter or six months—and state the product line and territory in the invitation. A vague “overall relationship” question invites people to mix old incidents, current service and unrelated product experiences.

Protect candor
Report aggregated results, sample size and response rate. Suppress small cells that could reveal a respondent, and explain who can see comments. If respondents believe criticism will affect deal registration, rebates or support, the score will measure caution rather than trust.
Use a short, repeatable trust survey
A practical core instrument has one or two items per dimension plus an overall confidence question. Keep the survey short enough to complete in five to eight minutes; consistency over time is more valuable than a long one-off questionnaire.
Core question set
- “This partner does what it says it will do.”
- “I trust this partner’s advice and recommendations.”
- “This partner explains capabilities, limitations, pricing and risks clearly.”
- “This partner protects agreed priorities when conditions change.”
- “When something goes wrong, this partner discloses it and works toward a fair resolution.”
- “This partner considers the health of the joint business, not only its own short-term result.”
- “I would recommend expanding this partnership.”
The University of Twente channel-partner instrument uses five-point questions about confidence in sales advice, reliable project support, and explaining product capabilities and limitations. Those themes map well to the competence, reliability and transparency dimensions above. If you adapt its wording, document the change rather than presenting your version as a validated scale.

Ask for a concrete incident
After the scaled items, add two open questions:
- “What action would increase your trust by one point?”
- “Describe a recent promise that was kept or missed.”
Require neither a positive nor a negative story. Ask for the approximate month, the function involved and the effect on the joint work, but do not ask respondents to identify a colleague by name. Incident comments turn a low score into a fixable operating problem and help detect polite scoring that masks serious concerns.
Add a confidence question carefully
An overall item such as “How confident are you that this partner will support the joint business over the next six months?” is useful for trend reporting. Do not let it replace the dimension scores: a single global rating cannot show whether confidence is being reduced by pricing opacity, support delays or poor planning.
Supplement surveys with interviews
Scale responses show where trust is weak; interviews explain why. Interview a purposeful sample across partner size, region, tenure and performance rather than only the loudest or largest accounts. Use the same prompts for vendor and reseller participants:
- Which recent commitment most influenced your confidence?
- When did the other side give you unwelcome information early enough to act?
- What information do you hesitate to share, and what would make sharing safer?
- Which approval, escalation or handoff creates the most friction?
- What one change would increase trust by one point?
McKinsey’s Supplier Collaboration Index combines surveys and interviews. Its collaboration research reports that organizations in successful collaborations tend to appreciate each other’s capabilities, understand each other’s businesses and believe partners will keep their commitments. The same work notes that trust is often built over time through longstanding business relationships. Use that insight as a reason to examine repeated behavior, not as a reason to assume an old relationship is healthy.

Triangulate perceptions with observable behavior
Trust scores are perceptions, and perceptions are the construct you need to measure. Behavioral evidence tests whether the reported experience is visible in day-to-day work and helps teams choose interventions. Do not convert every behavior into a trust score; keep the evidence panel separate and analyze the relationship between the two.

| Capability investment | People assigned; solution development; certification budget; joint-business-plan completion | Willingness to invest in the relationship’s future |
Research commissioned by BI WORLDWIDE from Kantar and reported in 2025 surveyed more than 700 channel partners. It highlights sales activity, end-customer acquisition, referrals, co-marketing, promotion engagement and training participation as relationship metrics. Use those categories as a checklist, then choose measures your systems can define consistently.
Score the relationship without hiding disagreement
Calculate dimension scores
For each respondent, average the items within a dimension after confirming that all items use the same direction. If an item is negatively worded, reverse-code it before averaging. Report the median and distribution for each dimension, not only the mean; a median of 4 can conceal one person scoring 1 and another scoring 5.
For a simple five-point scale, a dimension score can be expressed as:
dimension score = median of valid item responses
Set a minimum completion rule before calculating a score—for example, require at least half of the items in that dimension. Publish the number of valid responses beside every score.
Create an overall index only when components remain visible
If leaders need one portfolio number, calculate the unweighted average of the six dimension medians, or use a pre-declared weighting based on strategy. An unweighted index is easier to explain; weighted scores can reflect a business where, for example, support reliability is more consequential than advocacy. Never present the index without its component scores and response count.
overall trust index = (reliability + competence + transparency + commitment + problem handling + mutual interest) / 6
Keep the advocacy item outside this calculation unless you explicitly decide that it is a seventh dimension and apply that rule to every wave.
Show the vendor–reseller perception gap
Calculate the same dimension score separately for vendor and reseller respondents, then show the difference in scale points:
perception gap = vendor score − reseller score
Label the direction so readers cannot mistake a negative value for a positive one. A large positive vendor score paired with a low reseller score is an alignment problem even when the combined average looks acceptable. Include distributions or box plots where the sample permits; a gap caused by one outlier should not receive the same response as a consistent split across contacts.

Track change, not a magic cutoff
Repeat the instrument monthly for a small set of strategic relationships or quarterly for a broader partner base. Report change from the previous wave, year-over-year movement and the number of waves behind the trend. CRN’s 2026 Annual Report Card methodology describes concern areas, peer comparisons and year-over-year trending as ways to interpret partner feedback, and emphasizes survey execution, data collection, analysis and insights as a managed process.
No universal trust threshold or cross-industry cutoff is established by the evidence. Set organization-specific decision rules only after you have baseline data. For example, you might require an action plan when a dimension falls by 0.5 points on a five-point scale, when the reseller–vendor gap exceeds 0.75 points, or when two consecutive waves decline. Those are governance choices, not industry standards; disclose the scale, timing, sample and geography whenever you use them.
Connect trust to business outcomes longitudinally
Use a time-ordered analysis rather than claiming that one survey caused a result. At each wave, store trust dimensions, behavioral evidence and outcomes for the same relationship and period. Then test whether a change in trust precedes a later change in retention, referrals, pipeline, gross margin or expansion.
- Freeze the relationship definition, respondent roles and measurement window.
- Collect trust responses and calculate dimension scores before reviewing the commercial result for that period.
- Record outcome measures for the same period and the next period, using stable definitions.
- Compare changes by relationship, tier or region only when sample sizes are sufficient.
- Investigate alternative explanations such as product launches, territory changes, pricing changes, staffing or market shocks.
- Report association and timing, not a guaranteed causal rule.
The meta-analysis from 1998 supports treating trust as a relationship construct that contributes to satisfaction and long-term orientation beyond economic outcomes. It does not support a statement such as “a one-point increase guarantees 10% growth.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare two partnerships or programs on the same axes
When evaluating two vendor–reseller relationships, use identical definitions, survey wording, time windows and reporting rules. Compare the following axes:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Reliability and follow-through | Which side keeps commitments, recovers from misses and escalates with useful information? |
| Advice and competence | Do contacts trust recommendations, technical guidance and commercial accuracy? |
| Transparency | Are limitations, pricing, conflicts, data and risks disclosed early and clearly? |
| Mutuality | Does each program protect joint value when incentives or priorities conflict? |
| Operating enablement | Are training, co-marketing, lead sharing, tools and responses actually available and used? |
| Business outcomes | How do retention, referrals, pipeline, margin and growth look alongside trust scores? |
| Trend and consistency | Is the relationship improving across waves, and do contacts in different regions report a similar experience? |
Do not rank programs on revenue alone. A larger program may have more sales but weaker transparency or much wider perception gaps, while a smaller program may be building a healthier long-term foundation.

Every reported weakness should have an owner, a measurable change and a review date. Avoid generic promises to “communicate better.” Match the remedy to the dimension and the evidence.

Common measurement mistakes
Using one overall question
A single “How much do you trust us?” item produces a number without a diagnosis. Keep the overall item as a trend indicator, but retain the six dimensions and incident examples.
Surveying only friendly contacts
Account managers often nominate respondents who are already engaged. Use a respondent map that includes operational and commercial contacts and, where possible, an independent survey channel.
Mixing vendor and reseller answers into one average
Combined averages hide the perception gap that most needs attention. Report each side separately before showing any combined index.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Changing the questions every wave
New wording breaks the trend. Keep a stable core and place experimental questions in a separate module.
Turning behavior into a substitute for trust
High training attendance or strong sales can coexist with low confidence in pricing transparency. Use behavioral evidence to triangulate and prioritize, not to overwrite the perception measure.
Publishing small-cell results
A score from one person is not a reliable group estimate and may expose the respondent. Suppress or combine small segments and show the response count.
Comparing unlike contexts
A mature reseller in one territory may have a different product mix, support model and tenure from a new reseller elsewhere. Normalize the relationship definition and disclose geography, edition, product scope and timing before making a comparison.
Evidence boundaries and interpretation
A peer-reviewed 2016 channel-partner performance framework was validated with 252 firm–channel-partner dyads and an 18-item measurement scale. It separates output, activity and capability performance, which supports keeping business results, operating activity and organizational capability as distinct sections of a scorecard. Because that validation occurred in a specific distribution context, test transferability in your own channel rather than assuming the same factor structure everywhere.
IPED and The Channel Company reported 151 solution providers in a 2025 study. The study also reported that almost 90% of partners regarded face-to-face events as very important to their marketing strategy. That statistic can inform an enablement or relationship-investment dashboard, but it is not a trust benchmark and should not be used to infer that event attendance proves confidence.
Similarly, the Kantar research commissioned by BI WORLDWIDE covered more than 700 channel partners and identifies practical relationship metrics; it does not establish a universal score or a causal revenue formula. Treat all named figures as study-specific, with their stated year and sample, rather than as general channel norms.
A repeatable operating cadence
- Before launch: define the relationship, product, territory, respondent roles, scale, anonymity rule and reporting threshold.
- At each wave: send the unchanged core survey, collect open text and record the response rate and valid sample.
- Within two weeks: calculate dimension medians, distributions, vendor–reseller gaps and change from the prior wave.
- In the same review: attach the behavioral panel for commitments, issues, information sharing, enablement, joint demand generation and outcomes.
- For material gaps: interview a balanced sample from both sides and document the specific incident or process causing friction.
- At the governance meeting: assign actions, owners and due dates; record which assumptions or data limitations affect interpretation.
- At the next wave: test whether the action changed the relevant trust dimension and operating behavior, not merely whether a single overall score moved.
What a decision-ready report contains
- Relationship scope: vendor, reseller, product line, territory and period.
- Respondent composition by side and role, with anonymity protections.
- Response rate and valid sample size for every reported score.
- Median, distribution and change for each trust dimension.
- Vendor score, reseller score and clearly labeled perception gap.
- Overall index only when its component scores remain visible.
- Behavioral evidence with definitions, period and data owner.
- Outcome measures shown beside trust, never in place of it.
- Open-text themes and representative incidents with identities removed.
- Actions, owners, due dates and the next measurement wave.
The most credible answer to “Does this reseller really trust our program?” is therefore not a single number. It is a transparent pattern: how the reseller scores reliability, advice, transparency, commitment, recovery and mutual interest; whether the vendor sees the same pattern; what behavior supports or contradicts those perceptions; and whether the pattern improves over time.
