The reliable way to measure an AI coding task is to instrument every API call, preserve each provider’s raw usage record, normalize the fields into one ledger, apply a versioned price registry, and aggregate all calls under a task ID. Do not estimate cost from the visible answer or from a single token count: context, cached input, generated output, hidden reasoning, tool calls, retries, tokenizer differences, and provider billing rules can all change the amount charged.
This method works across OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini APIs. It gives you both an auditable per-request cost and a task-level distribution that remains useful when the same coding prompt behaves very differently from one run to the next.

What you are actually measuring
“Token usage” and “cost” are related but not identical. A provider may report several token categories, while its invoice applies different prices or billing rules to those categories. Your ledger should therefore retain the provider’s original usage payload and also create a normalized record for comparison.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Input tokens: text and other input content sent to the model, including system instructions, conversation history, retrieved files, and tool results that become context.
- Output tokens: tokens generated in the response that you receive.
- Cached-input tokens: input content recognized as reusable by a provider’s caching system and priced under a separate category when applicable.
- Reasoning or thought tokens: internal generation reported by some services or exposed through usage metadata. These may be billable even when they are not displayed in the answer.
- Tool-call units: model-generated calls to functions, search, code execution, or other built-in tools. The model tokens used to create and process those calls are part of the task; some services also expose provider-specific billable units.
- Total tokens: a provider-reported total, which should be checked against the component fields rather than treated as a universal definition.
A coding task is the complete unit a person cares about: the initial request, context loading, model responses, tool calls, retries, follow-up turns, and any sub-agent work. A request-level total can be accurate while still understating the task if the task makes dozens of calls.

Build an event log before calculating anything
Record one immutable event for every request and response pair. Log the request even when the call fails, because retry behavior and failed-call charging rules differ by provider. Store timestamps in UTC and keep the provider response body or usage object exactly as returned.
Required request fields
- UTC timestamp: record both request start and completion time when possible.
- Provider: for example, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini.
- Model identifier: store the exact model ID returned or submitted, not a friendly nickname that can later point to a different model.
- Endpoint: distinguish APIs such as Chat Completions and Responses because their usage schemas differ.
- Task or session ID: a stable identifier tying every call in one coding task together.
- Status: success, timeout, client error, rate-limit response, server error, or cancellation.
- Retry count and attempt ID: make each attempt identifiable so a successful retry cannot hide earlier consumption.
- Tool-call information: record tool name, arguments, result size, and whether the tool was built in or supplied by your application.
- Raw usage payload: save the complete provider usage object, including fields you do not yet understand.
Keep request context measurable
Token counts are driven by what you send, not only by the final question. Record references to system prompts, repository snapshots, file lists, retrieved documents, conversation history, and tool output. You do not need to duplicate sensitive content in a cost database, but you should retain a content version, byte count, or hash that lets you explain why two apparently identical tasks had different input totals.
Do not replace raw records with a running counter. A raw event makes later audits possible when a provider adds a field, changes a tokenizer, or corrects a usage record.

Normalize provider records into a common ledger
After storing the raw payload, map it into a provider-neutral schema. Keep nullable fields for categories that a provider does not expose, and never infer hidden reasoning or cached usage from visible text.
| Normalized column | Purpose |
|---|---|
| event_id | Unique identifier for one API attempt |
| task_id | Identifier shared by all calls belonging to one coding task |
| timestamp_utc | Ordering and alignment with provider dashboards |
| provider | Provider name used for pricing and reconciliation |
| model_id | Exact model identifier |
| endpoint | API surface that produced the usage fields |
| input_tokens | Normalized prompt or input count |
| output_tokens | Normalized generated-output count |
| cached_input_tokens | Reusable input counted separately when reported |
| reasoning_tokens | Reasoning or thought count when exposed |
| total_tokens | Provider total, preserved as reported |
| provider_units | Any additional billable units specific to that service |
| status | Outcome of the attempt |
| retry_count | Attempt number or number of prior retries |
| raw_usage | Original, unmodified usage object |
Use a mapping layer rather than renaming fields in place. For example, OpenAI Chat Completions reports prompt_tokens, completion_tokens, and total_tokens, while OpenAI Responses reports input_tokens, output_tokens, and total_tokens. Both can map to the same normalized columns while their original names remain in raw_usage.
Streaming responses need a final usage record
With streaming Chat Completions, usage may arrive in a final usage chunk instead of the ordinary message chunks. Enable stream_options.include_usage and persist that final chunk. If your client stops reading the stream early, your local log may lack the usage object even though the provider processed the request; mark that event as incomplete rather than filling in a guessed count.
Version prices instead of hard-coding them
Create a price registry separate from usage events. Each price record should contain the provider, exact model identifier, token category, geography or service tier, currency, effective date, and source. Add an end date or superseded-by field when a price changes. This prevents a historical task from being recalculated with today’s rate.

category_cost = (category_tokens / 1,000,000) × price_per_1M_tokens
Sum category costs across one API attempt, then sum attempts across the task:
task_cost = Σ(input_cost + cached_input_cost + output_cost + reasoning_cost + provider_unit_cost)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the provider’s own billing category names where they exist. If a service reports thought tokens separately, apply the documented thought-token rule instead of silently adding them to visible output. If cached input has its own rate, calculate it separately from uncached input. Store unrounded values internally and round only the presentation layer; repeated rounding at the request level can create a noticeable difference over many calls.
What the registry must capture
- Model and alias: aliases can move to a new underlying model, so keep the resolved identifier where available.
- Token category: input, output, cached input, reasoning or thought, and any other billable unit.
- Region or service tier: prices can vary with geography or a priority tier.
- Currency and effective date: never mix currencies or apply a current rate to an earlier event without recording the conversion rule.
- Source record: save the provider pricing page or contract reference alongside the rate.
No universal published average cost for a coding task is established, so a calculator should report measured distributions rather than promise a single “typical” price.
Aggregate the complete coding task
Assign a task ID before the first model call and propagate it through every component. Include the initial request, context-building calls, code analysis, edits, tests, tool calls, retries, follow-up questions, and sub-agent calls. A parent agent and its sub-agents should have separate event IDs but the same task ID, with an optional parent-call ID for tracing.
Report more than a total
For each task, retain the total cost and a category breakdown. At minimum, report input, cached input, output, reasoning or thought, tools, and retries. Also report token totals, number of API attempts, elapsed time, and success status. Across many tasks, calculate the median and the 90th percentile (p90) cost. The median describes a normal run; p90 exposes the expensive tail that matters for budgets and capacity planning.
A 2026 arXiv study, “How Do AI Agents Spend Your Money? Analyzing and Predicting Token Consumption in Agentic Coding Tasks,” found that agentic coding tasks can consume substantially more tokens than code chat or code reasoning, that input tokens often drive total cost, and that repeated runs of the same task varied by up to 30×. Those are study findings, not a universal benchmark. Use them as a reason to measure your own distribution, not as a multiplier for every project. The same study also found that greater token use did not reliably produce greater accuracy.

Distinguish task cost from model cost
Keep two views. The model view answers how much one request cost under a particular model and endpoint. The task view answers how much it took to finish the coding job, including orchestration and retries. A cheaper model can produce a more expensive task if it needs more turns, larger context, or additional tool calls.
Provider-specific usage and billing details
OpenAI
OpenAI exposes different usage field names by endpoint. Chat Completions uses prompt_tokens, completion_tokens, and total_tokens. Responses uses input_tokens, output_tokens, and total_tokens. Normalize both, but preserve the endpoint and raw object so an audit can reproduce your mapping.
For streamed Chat Completions, request the final usage chunk with stream_options.include_usage. OpenAI’s dashboard supports project filters and exports, displays data in UTC, and exposes tokens-per-minute intervals for usage analysis. The OpenAI Help Center specifically warns that dashboard data is displayed in UTC; use that same time zone when aligning dashboard activity with application logs.

OpenAI distinguishes usage reporting from financial billing data. Its Usage API provides granular activity, while the Costs endpoint is the recommended source for finance and invoice reconciliation. Treat dashboard totals as an operational view and the Costs endpoint as the financial comparison point. Built-in tool tokens are billed at the selected model’s per-token rates, so a task that invokes built-in tools must include those model tokens in its ledger.
Anthropic
Anthropic supports prepaid usage credits for many organizations and monthly invoicing arrangements for eligible customers. Its documentation states that successful API calls and completed tasks are charged, while failed requests generally are not. “Generally” matters: retain status and provider response data so your reconciliation can follow the billing terms attached to your account rather than assuming every failure is free.
Use Anthropic’s Usage and Cost API for reconciliation. Match its usage records to your internal event IDs, then investigate differences by time window, model, status, retries, and task. Keep your internal estimate and the provider’s reported cost as separate columns; the former explains your application behavior, while the latter is the amount the provider says is billable.
Gemini
Gemini responses include usage_metadata, which reports actual request usage. Persist the complete object, including any fields for prompt, candidate, total, or thought usage that appear for the model and endpoint you use.
Google states that, when billing is enabled, pricing can include all thought tokens generated to produce a summary even when those thoughts are not shown in the output. A visible answer-length estimate is therefore insufficient. If thought usage is present, map it to your reasoning or thought column and apply the applicable billing rule from the current pricing documentation.

Why your estimate differs from the provider bill
The same code can tokenize differently
OpenAI explicitly notes that models can tokenize the same text differently and can generate different amounts of output or reasoning. Source code, indentation, Unicode characters, comments, file boundaries, and serialization format all affect tokenization. Comparing only the number of characters or lines is not a cross-provider measurement.
Visible output omits important work
A response displayed in an IDE may exclude system instructions, repository context, tool results, hidden reasoning, and intermediate turns. Measure the complete request and response lifecycle. For agentic workflows, inspect every sub-call rather than treating the final message as the whole task.
Retries and timeouts multiply usage
Rate-limit retries, network retries, and timeouts can create additional attempts. Record each attempt and its status. Do not collapse them into one logical request before checking the provider’s charging rule. A successful final attempt does not erase the cost or diagnostic value of earlier attempts.
Caching changes both tokens and price
Repeated context may be reported as cached input and priced differently from new input. If your local estimator counts all context at the ordinary input rate, it can overstate cost; if it ignores cache misses, it can understate cost. Keep cached and uncached columns separate.
Dashboard usage is not always billing data
For OpenAI, dashboard usage and billing data are distinct views. Similar distinctions can exist elsewhere. Reconcile against the provider’s usage or cost API and financial records, using the provider’s stated time zone and effective pricing period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A reconciliation procedure that survives audits
- Freeze the local period: choose a UTC start and end time and export all event records for that window.
- Check completeness: compare request counts, success and failure statuses, retry counts, and task IDs with application logs.
- Validate mappings: confirm that each endpoint’s raw fields map to the correct normalized columns.
- Apply historical prices: join each event to the registry record whose model, category, region, currency, and effective date match the event.
- Separate estimates from provider records: retain local calculated cost, provider-reported usage, and provider-reported financial cost as distinct fields.
- Align time zones: convert application timestamps and dashboard exports to UTC before grouping by day or billing period.
- Investigate deltas: start with missing retries, cached-input classification, thought tokens, tool calls, model aliases, and calls outside the selected project or account.
- Document the adjustment: never overwrite the original estimate. Add a reconciliation note, source record, and date for every correction.
How to compare providers fairly
List price is only one axis. Compare the complete behavior of a model on the same task family, with the same context policy and success criteria.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Input price | What is charged for new input tokens? |
| Output price | What is charged for generated output? |
| Cached-input price | Is reusable context priced separately, and when does it qualify? |
| Reasoning or thought billing | Are internal tokens exposed, and are they billable when hidden? |
| Tokenizer behavior | How many tokens does the same repository context produce on each model? |
| Context and tools | How do context-window limits, tool results, and built-in tools affect calls? |
| Retries and timeouts | Which unsuccessful attempts are charged? |
| Reporting APIs | Can you retrieve granular usage and financial cost for reconciliation? |
| Task quality and latency | Does the model complete the coding objective with acceptable accuracy and time? |
Run the same defined task set and report distributions, not just one successful run. Keep published list prices separate from observed task costs. A model with a lower per-million-token price can still cost more if it tokenizes the repository less efficiently, generates more reasoning, or needs additional turns.
Implementation pattern for an internal cost ledger
A practical service has four layers:
- Capture: a middleware wrapper records request metadata, response status, retries, tool events, and raw usage.
- Normalize: provider adapters map raw fields to common columns without deleting unknown fields.
- Price: a versioned registry calculates category costs using the effective date and service tier.
- Aggregate: a task processor rolls events into per-task totals, medians, p90 values, and provider reconciliation reports.
A minimal event object can be represented as:
{
'event_id': 'unique-attempt-id',
'task_id': 'coding-task-id',
'timestamp_utc': '2026-10-18T12:34:56Z',
'provider': 'provider-name',
'model_id': 'exact-model-id',
'endpoint': 'endpoint-name',
'status': 'success',
'retry_count': 0,
'input_tokens': 0,
'output_tokens': 0,
'cached_input_tokens': 0,
'reasoning_tokens': 0,
'total_tokens': 0,
'provider_units': {},
'raw_usage': {}
}
The zero values above are schema defaults, not measurements. Replace them only with values returned by the provider or with an explicitly documented null when a category is not exposed. Never infer a hidden category from the visible response.

Missing final stream chunks
If a stream ends without its usage chunk, mark the record incomplete and retry collection through your client instrumentation. Do not estimate from character count and label it as exact.
Model aliases in historical data
Store both the requested alias and resolved model identifier. When an alias changes, the price registry can then apply the correct rate to each historical event.
Sub-agents outside the parent ledger
Require every worker to receive the parent task ID. Reconcile the sum of child events with the orchestrator’s trace so background calls cannot disappear from the task total.
Recommended Free Tools
Rounding drift
Keep token counts as integers and monetary values at high precision until the final report. Round only once for display or invoicing.
Stale pricing records
Every price record needs an effective date and source. Recheck provider pricing, model aliases, usage schemas, and billing rules before publishing a report because all can change.
A practical reporting format
For each coding task, show:
- Task ID, UTC start and end, provider and model mix.
- Total API attempts and successful completions.
- Input, cached-input, output, reasoning or thought, and tool-related totals.
- Calculated cost by category and currency.
- Provider-reported usage or cost used for reconciliation.
- Retry count, failure count, and any incomplete usage records.
- Quality outcome, such as tests passed, review result, or acceptance status.
For a project or month, show median and p90 task cost, total spend by provider and model, the largest tasks, retry-related spend, and the percentage of events that reconciled without adjustment. This makes expensive outliers visible without pretending that one average represents every coding workflow.
Bottom line for engineering teams
Measure at the event level, calculate at the category level, and budget at the task level. Preserve raw provider data, version every price, include retries and tools, and reconcile your estimate with the provider’s usage and financial records. When comparing APIs, test the same code and workflow rather than comparing token prices in isolation; tokenizer behavior, hidden reasoning, context reuse, and task variability determine what you actually pay.
