How to Measure Time-Crystal Behavior in a Laboratory Experiment

You test a time crystal by repeatedly driving an interacting many-body system, measuring an order parameter at exactly the same point in every drive cycle, and checking whether the response stays locked to a subharmonic of the drive. For a period-doubled discrete time crystal, the measured magnetization or polarization alternates every cycle, producing a spectral peak at half the drive frequency. That peak is only the first check: a convincing result also demonstrates frequency rigidity when drive parameters are perturbed, persistence over a quantified lifetime, controls against ordinary period doubling, and finite-size and error analysis.

What a laboratory measurement must establish

A discrete time crystal (DTC) is a nonequilibrium phase in which interactions, collective synchronization and broken ergodicity produce a response whose period is an integer multiple of the drive period. In the common period-doubling case, a Floquet sequence with period T produces an observable that repeats every 2T. If the drive frequency is fdrive = 1/T, the response is expected at fdrive/2, often written as normalized frequency ν = 1/2.

The minimum credible measurement therefore has four linked parts:

  • A periodically driven, interacting many-body system rather than an isolated oscillator.
  • An order parameter sampled stroboscopically, once per drive period and with a stable phase reference.
  • A subharmonic response that remains frequency-locked when the drive is changed slightly.
  • A persistence and control analysis showing that the signal is not a transient, readout artifact or conventional forced period doubling.

No universal lifetime or signal-to-noise cutoff applies to every platform. The useful lifetime depends on drive frequency, interactions, disorder, system size, heating, decoherence and readout noise, so those quantities must accompany every reported measurement.

Choose the order parameter and synchronized sampling point

Spin magnetization

For trapped ions or other spin systems, use the average spin magnetization after each Floquet period. If individual spins are available, retain site-resolved values before averaging; they reveal defects, phase slips and spatially localized loss of order. The ten-ion experiment reported in Nature (2017) measured individual spin magnetizations after repeated Floquet evolution and analyzed their Fourier spectrum.

Polarization

In a diamond spin ensemble, polarization can be defined as the population difference between the two addressed spin states. The approximately one-million-spin diamond experiment in Nature (2017) used this observable and tracked its normalized half-frequency component over time.

Other observables

Use an observable that changes sign or otherwise cycles under the expected time-crystal operation: a collective spin component, population imbalance or polarization. Define the normalization and sign convention before collecting data. Measure at the same phase of the drive on every cycle; sampling at inconsistent phases can manufacture apparent beating or wash out a genuine subharmonic.

Equipment, controls and data you need

The apparatus must provide a repeatable Floquet sequence, a clock or trigger shared by the drive and detector, and enough repetitions to estimate shot-to-shot uncertainty. Record the following metadata with each trace:

  • Drive period, pulse durations and pulse angles.
  • Interaction strength, disorder setting and drive amplitude.
  • System size and the number of experimental shots at every stroboscopic time.
  • Preparation state, readout basis, detection fidelity and any analysis rotation.
  • Heating, decoherence and calibration drift indicators.

Keep a raw, time-ordered record. Do not average away individual shots or sites before calculating uncertainties. A trace that shows only a smooth fitted sinusoid cannot reveal phase slips, transient settling, beats or rare readout failures.

Step-by-step measurement protocol

1. Prepare the many-body state

Initialize the spins or other degrees of freedom in a documented state. Repeat the preparation enough times to obtain a baseline distribution of the order parameter. Measure a no-drive or static reference when possible; it helps separate preparation decay from Floquet dynamics.

2. Apply the periodic Floquet sequence

Drive the system with a sequence whose complete unit is T. The sequence can contain rotations, interactions and delays, but its timing must be stable over the full record. The trapped-ion study repeated its sequence for 100 periods, then applied an analysis rotation and performed state detection. A different platform may require more or fewer cycles; choose a duration long enough to exceed transients and to resolve the expected lifetime.

3. Read out at every period

After each completed period, measure the order parameter at the same phase. For each time index n, retain the individual outcomes and compute M(nT) (or the equivalent polarization). Preserve the standard error, confidence interval or bootstrap distribution rather than reporting only the mean.

4. Inspect the raw stroboscopic trace

Plot the signed order parameter against period number before filtering. A period-doubled trace alternates high and low values, or positive and negative values, on successive samples. Mark preparation transients, missing shots and known calibration changes. Phase slips and a drifting oscillation phase are evidence against a rigid DTC and should not be hidden by smoothing.

5. Calculate the subharmonic spectrum

Apply a discrete Fourier transform to the uniformly sampled sequence. The frequency resolution is set by the total observation time; a longer record separates a narrow peak from a broad transient. Quantify the half-drive peak height, width and signal-to-noise ratio, and state the windowing and detrending method. In the trapped-ion work, the subharmonic peak height and its variance were used as diagnostics.

A peak at fdrive/2 is necessary for a period-doubled response but is not sufficient for a time crystal. A forced nonlinear oscillator, pulse imperfection or a short transient can also generate a half-frequency line.

6. Test frequency rigidity

Repeat the experiment while changing one control at a time: pulse angle, drive amplitude, interaction strength, disorder, drive frequency or detuning. A DTC signature is that the oscillation remains locked to the same subharmonic while its amplitude and lifetime change. If the peak moves continuously with the drive parameter, the behavior is more consistent with an ordinary driven response. The trapped-ion experiment reported synchronized oscillations and stronger Fourier subharmonic peaks as interactions increased.

7. Quantify persistence and lifetime

Estimate the decay of the subharmonic component instead of quoting the number of visible cycles. Two common approaches are:

  • Fit an envelope to the alternating component of the time trace. Report the model (for example, exponential, stretched exponential or another physically motivated form), fit interval, uncertainty and noise floor.
  • Use a sliding-window Fourier transform. Track the normalized half-frequency peak in successive windows and define the lifetime from a stated threshold or confidence criterion.

The diamond experiment used moving windows to extract a crystalline fraction and lifetime. In NMR, interactions acting during the pulses can produce apparent decay, so the measured lifetime must be separated, where possible, into intrinsic loss of order and pulse-sequence or instrumental contributions.

8. Repeat across sizes and controls

Run the same analysis for several system sizes and control regimes. The trapped-ion study reported finite-size scaling for N = 10, 12 and 14 ions. A finite system has a rounded crossover rather than a mathematically sharp phase transition, so do not present a small-system peak as proof of a thermodynamic phase without a scaling analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include a no-interaction control, or a no-disorder control when the platform allows it. Also compare a symmetry-breaking regime with a symmetry-preserving regime if the experiment is designed to access both. These controls test whether interactions and the intended phase structure, rather than pulse errors alone, stabilize the response.

How to analyze the signal

Time-domain checks

Calculate the mean and uncertainty of the order parameter at each period. Inspect whether the sign or phase alternates consistently, whether the envelope decays, and whether the first few points differ from the settled regime. Report missing samples and any interpolation; interpolation should not be used to create a longer record than was measured.

Frequency-domain checks

For a record of N periods, use the same sampling interval and Fourier convention for every parameter scan. State whether the data were detrended, windowed or zero-padded. A narrow peak indicates coherence over the observation window, but its width also reflects finite record length and noise. Compare the half-frequency peak with neighboring bins and with a reference trace that lacks interactions.

Autocorrelation

Compute a magnetization autocorrelation such as C(τ) = ⟨M(t)M(t+τ)⟩, using a clearly stated averaging range. In the prethermal trapped-ion work published in Science (2021), magnetization autocorrelation and energy-density dynamics were measured as functions of drive frequency and initial energy density to identify the prethermal regime and its lifetime. Autocorrelation distinguishes a persistent phase relation from an isolated Fourier peak.

Uncertainty and significance

Propagate shot noise, site-to-site variation and calibration uncertainty into peak heights and fitted lifetimes. Use resampling or a likelihood-based fit when the number of shots is limited. A claimed increase in rigidity or lifetime should include an uncertainty interval and the number of independent experimental runs, not just the best-fit curve.

Distinguishing a DTC from ordinary period doubling

Use the following decision sequence when interpreting a result:

  1. Is there a reproducible subharmonic? Verify a peak at the expected fraction of the drive frequency in independent runs, not only in one trace.
  2. Does the frequency stay locked? Perturb the pulse angle, amplitude, interaction, disorder and drive frequency. A rigid response keeps the same subharmonic frequency while amplitude changes.
  3. Does it persist beyond a few cycles? Report a fitted or windowed lifetime with its uncertainty and noise floor.
  4. Do controls remove alternative explanations? Compare interaction-free, disorder-free or symmetry-preserving settings and test for pulse-induced artifacts.
  5. Does the behavior survive size analysis? Repeat for multiple sizes and state that a finite sample shows a crossover, not an infinitely sharp transition.

Do not label a short-lived oscillation a time crystal solely because its Fourier spectrum contains a half-frequency peak. The defining evidence is the combination of subharmonic response, rigidity, persistence and controls.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

Inconsistent synchronization

Symptom: the half-frequency peak broadens or disappears between runs. Fix: trigger the detector from the same clock as the Floquet sequence, verify the first sample’s phase, and discard or separately label shots with timing faults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transient mistaken for a crystal

Symptom: a strong alternating signal appears only at the beginning. Fix: extend the sequence, model the settling interval explicitly and report the lifetime from the settled record rather than from the largest initial amplitude.

Pulse interactions masquerading as decay

Symptom: the extracted lifetime changes when pulse width or sequence details change, even though the nominal drive is unchanged. Fix: calibrate interactions during pulses, include them in the Floquet model and state whether the reported value is an observed or intrinsic lifetime. This issue is documented in the NMR DTC work.

Readout noise hiding phase slips

Symptom: averaging produces a smooth decay while individual sites show flips or defects. Fix: retain site-resolved and shot-resolved data, show representative raw traces and propagate detection error into the spectrum.

Finite-size overinterpretation

Symptom: a single small chain is described as having a sharp phase transition. Fix: perform size scans, report the rounded crossover and avoid extrapolating beyond the measured sizes.

How to report a publishable measurement

A complete report lets another laboratory reproduce both the drive and the analysis. Include:

  • The Hamiltonian or effective Floquet sequence, period, pulse angles and drive frequency.
  • System size, interaction and disorder settings, preparation energy or state, and number of periods.
  • The exact order-parameter definition and readout phase.
  • Raw stroboscopic traces with shot or site uncertainty.
  • Fourier method, windowing, frequency resolution, peak height, width and noise estimate.
  • Parameter-perturbation scans demonstrating or refuting frequency rigidity.
  • Lifetime model or sliding-window definition, fit range, threshold and uncertainty.
  • Control data, heating and decoherence checks, pulse-interaction assessment and finite-size results.

Report every lifetime and linewidth with the conditions that produced it. There is no platform-independent numerical threshold that converts a half-frequency peak into a time crystal.

From diagnosis to sensing

Once a prethermal DTC is characterized, its long-lived oscillation can serve as a frequency reference. The 2026 Nature Physics demonstration with dipolar-coupled 13C spins in diamond used the response for magnetic-field sensing over 0.5–50 kHz; the sensing linewidth was set by the time-crystal lifetime. This application illustrates why lifetime analysis matters: the same decay that limits a phase claim also limits frequency resolution.

The Bottom Line

A laboratory claim is strongest when a synchronized order-parameter trace shows a reproducible half-drive-frequency peak, that frequency remains locked under controlled perturbations, the signal has a quantified lifetime, and interaction, noise and finite-size controls rule out ordinary period doubling.
