To measure whether EmDash made a site faster, run the same URL through the same tests before and after deployment, keep the page and delivery conditions fixed, repeat Lighthouse runs, and report individual metrics rather than only the Performance score. Lighthouse gives controlled laboratory data. PageSpeed Insights (PSI) adds Lighthouse diagnostics and, when enough traffic is available, Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data from real visitors. Those two data sets answer different questions, so a credible result reports both separately.
What a valid EmDash speed comparison measures
A before-and-after test can show how an EmDash release or configuration changed loading and interaction under defined conditions. It cannot prove that every visitor experienced the same change. Laboratory tests use a repeatable browser and network profile; field data combines visitors using different devices, browsers, networks and locations.

The comparison is meaningful only when the measured page and its delivery environment are held constant except for the EmDash change. Use the same canonical URL, page content, image files and dimensions, font files, third-party scripts, analytics configuration, cache policy, device strategy and test location. Record the EmDash release, Astro build, Cloudflare Workers settings, database region and whether the page is static or server-rendered. EmDash’s Astro- and Cloudflare-oriented architecture means those deployment details can affect the result.
Keep three kinds of evidence distinct:
- Browser lab metrics: Lighthouse’s FCP, LCP, Speed Index, CLS, TBT and Performance score under a selected Mobile or Desktop strategy.
- Real-user metrics: PSI’s CrUX values, including field LCP, INP and CLS when the URL or origin has sufficient traffic.
- Server timing: TTFB or another server-processing measurement. It describes response timing and is not interchangeable with a browser’s rendered experience.
The result you want is not simply “the score went up.” It is a documented change in each relevant metric, with the test conditions and evidence type attached.

Prepare the experiment before touching the deployment
Choose the page or matched page set
Select one representative EmDash URL, or a matched group of URLs that serve the same purpose. Use the canonical address that visitors and search engines are expected to load. If you test several pages, keep the set identical before and after the release; do not replace a slow page with a faster one in the second sample.
Freeze everything unrelated to EmDash
Make a short change log for the comparison. Freeze:
- HTML copy, navigation and page templates
- Image files, dimensions, formats and responsive behavior
- Font files, preload instructions and font-display settings
- Advertising, analytics, tag-manager and other third-party scripts
- CDN, compression, cache and revalidation settings
- Database contents and the region used by server-rendered requests
- Astro build settings and Cloudflare Workers configuration
If one of these must change at the same time, describe the result as a combined-change experiment. You will not be able to attribute the measured difference to EmDash alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecord the test context
For every run, write down the URL, date and time, Mobile or Desktop strategy, browser version, network and throttling profile, test location, deployment identifier and whether the page was served from cache. Save the Lighthouse report URL or JSON file and the PSI report date. A result without this context cannot be reproduced reliably.

Run the Lighthouse baseline in Chrome DevTools
Lighthouse is controlled lab data intended for debugging. It is useful for isolating opportunities, but individual runs vary because of page nondeterminism, network conditions, server behavior and the test computer. Treat one run as a clue, not a baseline.
- Open the frozen canonical URL in Chrome.
- Open DevTools, select the Lighthouse panel, and start a clean session. Close unrelated tabs and extensions that could consume CPU or network bandwidth.
- Run the report with the Mobile strategy. Then run a separate report with the Desktop strategy.
- For each strategy, save the report URL or export the JSON result.
- Record the Performance score and the values for First Contentful Paint (FCP), Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Speed Index, Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) and Total Blocking Time (TBT).
- Note the largest opportunity audits, such as render-blocking resources, image delivery, unused JavaScript or server response time. An opportunity is diagnostic evidence, not itself a speed measurement.
- Repeat each strategy several times without changing the page or test settings. Use a predeclared summary, such as the median, for the before result.
Run the baseline close enough to the EmDash deployment that content, traffic patterns and infrastructure settings remain comparable. If the site is changing continuously, capture the exact build identifier with every report.
What the Lighthouse metrics mean
| Metric | What it describes | Why to record it |
|---|---|---|
| FCP | When the browser first renders meaningful content. | Shows whether the beginning of the visual response moved earlier or later. |
| LCP | When the largest visible content element is rendered. | Often exposes changes in server response, critical resources, image handling or rendering order. |
| Speed Index | How quickly visible page content fills the viewport during loading. | Captures the shape of visual progress rather than one element alone. |
| CLS | Unexpected movement of visible content during loading. | Shows whether layout stability changed, for example because dimensions or fonts changed. |
| TBT | Main-thread blocking during the lab load. | Helps reveal JavaScript work that can delay interaction in the controlled run. |
| Performance score | A composite Lighthouse score calculated from several audits. | Useful as a summary, but insufficient for diagnosing which behavior changed. |
Run PageSpeed Insights for the same URL
Submit the identical canonical URL to PageSpeed Insights. PSI provides both lab and field data about a page. Its lab section runs Lighthouse diagnostics; its field section uses CrUX when the URL or origin has enough qualifying traffic.

- Run and save separate Mobile and Desktop reports. Do not compare a Mobile report before deployment with a Desktop report afterward.
- Record the report date, strategy, Performance score, metric values, opportunities and the Core Web Vitals assessment.
- Save the report link or export available results so the evidence can be reviewed later.
- Copy field values separately from lab values. Label field LCP, INP and CLS with their percentile and collection window.
PSI’s lab result may differ from the Lighthouse panel in DevTools because the runs occur at different times and may use different execution conditions. That is not automatically an EmDash regression. Keep the two lab sources in separate rows in your notes.

Deploy the EmDash change without contaminating the comparison
Deploy the EmDash version or configuration you intend to evaluate after the baseline is complete. Keep the page content, image set, scripts, CDN behavior and cache policy unchanged. Record the exact EmDash release and Astro build, the Cloudflare Workers settings, database region and rendering mode.
Allow caches and edge configuration to settle in the same way they did for the baseline, and document whether each test hit a warm or cold cache. If the deployment also changes a script, image, database query or infrastructure setting, list that beside the result and report the outcome as the effect of all changes together.
Repeat the exact tests after deployment
- Open the same URL and repeat the Lighthouse Mobile runs under the same browser and conditions.
- Repeat the Lighthouse Desktop runs.
- Use the same number of repetitions and the same summary rule, such as the median.
- Submit the same URL to PSI and capture new Mobile and Desktop lab reports.
- Record new field values, but mark them as a new snapshot of the CrUX window rather than an immediate deployment measurement.
- Check that the page content, response mode, cache state and test location still match the baseline. If not, annotate the difference.
For every metric, calculate both an absolute delta and a percentage delta. For a metric where lower is better, use after − before for the absolute change and (after − before) ÷ before × 100 for the percentage change; a negative result indicates an improvement. For a metric where higher is better, interpret the sign in the opposite direction. State your convention in the report so readers do not mistake a negative number for a regression.

Use the score bands only as context: Google documents 90–100 as good, 50–89 as needs improvement and below 50 as poor. A score crossing a band does not explain which user-visible behavior changed, and a small score movement can hide a meaningful change in one metric.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand PSI field data and the 28-day delay
PSI field data describes the previous 28-day collection period and evaluates Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile. It is therefore a rolling, real-user view, not a same-day deployment monitor. On the day you publish an EmDash change, the field panel still largely reflects visits collected before that change.
Recheck field data only after the new deployment has accumulated enough traffic to appear in the current collection window. Record the window dates with every snapshot. Do not claim that a same-day PSI field result proves a long-term improvement or regression; use the immediate Lighthouse lab comparison for that early signal and reserve the field conclusion for a later window.
Why Lighthouse and PSI can disagree
Different lab runs
Lighthouse results move between runs because of page nondeterminism, network contention, server timing and client workload. Compare repeated runs under controlled conditions and use the same summary method before and after. A single unusually fast or slow run should not determine the verdict.
Best Value
Lab versus real visitors
PSI field values come from real visitors using varied devices and networks, while Lighthouse lab values come from a controlled test profile. A page can improve in the lab and remain unchanged in the field if the change helps only fast devices, or field performance can improve while a particular lab profile does not reflect the visitors who benefited.
Server benchmark versus browser experience
TTFB and other server-processing measurements can move independently of LCP, CLS, INP or the Lighthouse score. An independent SHIFT64 benchmark published April 15, 2026, reports a site-specific EmDash server-processing comparison; it should not be treated as a universal EmDash result, and its server timing should not be substituted for PageSpeed or Lighthouse outcomes.
Keep TTFB in its own diagnostic track
Measure TTFB with a server or request-timing method that you can repeat before and after. Put it in a separate table row and label the server region, rendering mode and cache state. A lower TTFB can help the browser start sooner, but it does not guarantee a lower LCP: client-side JavaScript, fonts, images, layout shifts and third-party code can still dominate the visible experience. Conversely, LCP can improve without a large TTFB change if the EmDash build changes resource priority or rendering behavior.
Troubleshoot an apparent regression
The score fell but the page looks unchanged
- Check the individual FCP, LCP, Speed Index, CLS and TBT values before reacting to the composite score.
- Compare the repeated-run spread. If the runs overlap substantially, rerun under a cleaner, more consistent condition.
- Confirm that the same Mobile or Desktop strategy was used and that browser extensions or background traffic did not change.
LCP worsened after an EmDash release
- Verify that the same hero image, dimensions and font files were deployed.
- Check whether the page changed from static delivery to server rendering, or whether the database region or Worker setting changed.
- Review cache state and response timing separately from browser rendering.
- Compare the LCP element identified by Lighthouse before and after; a different element can make two similarly named LCP values describe different page content.
CLS increased
- Compare image and embedded-content dimensions.
- Check whether a font, banner, consent notice or third-party script now inserts content after the first render.
- Use the Lighthouse layout-shift details to identify the moving element rather than treating the score as a generic failure.
TBT increased while field INP is unchanged
TBT is a Lighthouse lab diagnostic, whereas INP in PSI field data reflects real interactions over the field collection window. Keep both observations, but do not present one as a direct substitute for the other. Confirm that the field window includes enough post-deployment traffic before drawing a field conclusion.
PSI field data has not changed
That is expected immediately after deployment because the field panel represents a trailing 28-day period. Check the collection dates and traffic eligibility, then wait for a later window rather than declaring the EmDash change ineffective.
A practical reporting checklist
- Exact canonical URL or matched URL set
- EmDash release, Astro build and deployment timestamp
- Static or server-rendered mode, database region and Cloudflare Workers settings
- Frozen content, images, fonts, scripts, analytics, CDN and cache policy
- Chrome and Lighthouse versions, test location and network/device strategy
- Repeated Lighthouse Mobile and Desktop runs, with the chosen median or other summary
- FCP, LCP, Speed Index, CLS, TBT and Performance score for each strategy
- PSI Mobile and Desktop lab results kept separate from DevTools Lighthouse results
- PSI CrUX LCP, INP and CLS values labeled with the 75th percentile and trailing window
- TTFB or server timing reported in its own row
- Absolute and percentage deltas, plus notes on any unavoidable combined change
- Saved report URLs or JSON files for the before and after evidence
How to state the final conclusion
Use a conclusion that matches the evidence level. A strong lab statement identifies the URL, strategy, repeated-run summary and metric deltas. A field statement names the CrUX window and 75th-percentile values. If the tests disagree, explain whether the difference comes from lab variability, visitor conditions, the rolling field window or server timing rather than forcing one number to represent all users.
For example, your report can say that the EmDash deployment changed the Lighthouse Mobile median for the tested URL, while PSI field data remains inconclusive until a later 28-day window. That wording distinguishes an immediate controlled observation from a real-user trend and prevents a server benchmark from being mistaken for a browser-experience result.
