How to Measure the Dielectric Constant of Water in Confined Spaces

Use scanning dielectric microscopy (SDM) for nanometre channels and calibrated microwave measurements for microfluidic or porous samples. SDM applies an AC voltage to an atomic-force-microscope tip, measures the electrostatic mechanical response while the tip scans a water-filled channel, and compares that response with a nearby material of known permittivity. For larger effective liquid volumes, measure calibrated transmission-line or open-ended-coaxial S-parameters and invert them with a geometry-aware electromagnetic model.

There is no single “dielectric constant of confined water.” The result depends on frequency, channel dimensions, wall chemistry and charge, temperature, ionic strength, field direction, and the volume being averaged. Report relative permittivity and conductivity together, and identify whether the value is in-plane, perpendicular to the walls, local, or pore-averaged.

What you are actually measuring

For a sinusoidal electric field, water is described by complex permittivity rather than one frequency-independent number:

ε*(ω) = ε′(ω) − jε″(ω)

The real part, ε′, represents stored electric energy. Losses appear in ε″, but ionic conduction is often more usefully reported as conductivity σ. A common engineering representation combines both effects as ε*eff(ω) = ε*(ω) − jσ/(ωε0). At low frequency, even a small ionic current can dominate the apparent capacitance. A value obtained from one low-frequency LCR reading can therefore be a mixture of polarization, electrode effects, and conduction rather than the intrinsic dielectric response.

In a confined channel, the electric response can be anisotropic. Define ε// for a field parallel to the walls and ε⊥ for a field normal to them. These components are not interchangeable. A local SDM value in a two-dimensional channel cannot be compared directly with a bulk, perpendicular, or whole-pore average.

Choose the measurement geometry first

Sample and question Recommended method Typical frequency domain Spatial character Main calibration burden
Approximately 1–60 nm channel or thin slit SDM with an AC-biased AFM tip, a known dielectric reference, and numerical inversion From kHz into GHz, broad enough to resolve relaxation and conduction Local and field-orientation dependent Tip geometry, channel dimensions, reference permittivity, and full 3D electrostatic model
Microfluidic channel containing a measurable liquid volume Calibrated transmission-line or on-wafer S-parameter fixture RF and microwave; one demonstrated platform reached 40 GHz Ensemble or fixture-volume average Calibration standards, fixture parasitics, and electromagnetic model
Porous material or open liquid surface Open-ended coaxial probe, with a model for the sample and fringing field Broadband RF/microwave, depending on the probe Near-surface, nonuniform sensing volume Probe calibration, contact condition, and sample-boundary model
Sub-nanometre local structure Usually simulation or a specialized scanning experiment; do not assume a standard probe resolves it Model dependent Strongly local and anisotropic Atomic-scale geometry and validated interaction model

SDM is the appropriate route when the channel is too small for a conventional fixture and you need a local result. RF fixtures are easier to calibrate for microfluidic dimensions and provide an average over the electrically active volume, but they cannot by themselves reveal where in a pore the response originated.

Method 1: scanning dielectric microscopy for nanometre channels

How SDM works

An AFM tip is driven with an AC voltage relative to an electrode or sample. The resulting electric field produces a force or force gradient that changes the cantilever response. The instrument records that mechanical response as the tip scans across a water-filled channel. Because the signal depends on the liquid permittivity, conductivity, tip shape, channel dimensions, and nearby materials, the measurement is interpreted by fitting a calculated response rather than by applying a single capacitance formula.

A practical implementation uses hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), with relative permittivity approximately 4, as a nearby reference. The in-plane field geometry allows the water response to be compared against a material whose dielectric constant is known well enough for calibration. Wang and colleagues reported this approach in Nature on 15 October 2025 for water channels about 1 to 60 nm high.

SDM procedure

  1. Define the component you need. Decide whether the target is ε′ at one frequency, a complex spectrum ε*(f), σ(f), or separate in-plane and perpendicular components. Write the field direction into the measurement plan before collecting data.
  2. Measure the channel geometry. Determine height, width, wall thickness, electrode spacing, and the tip-to-sample distance. Include uncertainty for every dimension; nanometre-scale geometric error can produce a larger permittivity error than the instrument noise.
  3. Document the liquid and surfaces. Record water purity, ionic strength, pH when relevant, temperature, wall material, surface charge or treatment, and the filling or exchange procedure. Trapped bubbles, incomplete filling, and evaporation change the effective geometry.
  4. Acquire a reference scan. Measure the hBN or another characterized dielectric under the same tip, lift height, drive amplitude, and bandwidth. Do not treat a nominal material value as a substitute for measuring the actual reference geometry.
  5. Sweep frequency broadly. Use enough bandwidth to distinguish displacement current, dielectric relaxation, and ionic or protonic conduction. Record amplitude and phase, not only a low-frequency force magnitude.
  6. Fit a coupled model. Use a full three-dimensional electrostatic or electromagnetic simulation containing the tip, channel, walls, electrodes, reference, anisotropy, and conductivity. Fit the observed cutoff frequencies and high-frequency plateaus, and propagate geometry and reference uncertainties.
  7. Check repeatability. Repeat scans at several positions and after refilling where possible. A response that follows the channel edge rather than its interior may be a topography or fringe-field artifact.

What the 2025 measurements imply

Wang et al. found that, for confinement exceeding several nanometres, the in-plane dielectric constant is close to bulk water. At a few-molecule thickness, they reported an in-plane dielectric constant of about 1,000 and conductivity peaks of several siemens per metre. These unusually large values are frequency- and geometry-specific results from the fitted SDM spectra; they are not universal constants for every nanocapillary.

Method 2: calibrated transmission-line and coaxial measurements

Microfluidic transmission-line fixtures

A microfluidic device can place the liquid in the electromagnetic field of a transmission line. Measure the device as a two-port (or otherwise defined) network, calibrate the measurement plane with standards, and compare the measured complex S-parameters with a finite-element model. NIST demonstrated an on-wafer platform using calibrated S-parameters and finite-element simulations to measure complex permittivity of sub-microlitre de-ionized water and methanol up to 40 GHz.

The fixture must be designed so the liquid produces a measurable perturbation without excessive loss. The model should include metal thickness, substrate, channel dimensions, dielectric layers, access lines, and any fluid meniscus. A calibration that moves the reference plane to the probe tips does not automatically remove the channel’s own parasitic capacitance or radiation; those effects must be modeled or characterized with an empty and known-liquid device.

Open-ended coaxial probes

An open-ended coaxial probe senses the fringing field at its aperture. Calibrate at the measurement temperature with standards such as a known open, short, and liquid load appropriate to the probe system. Press the probe consistently against the sample or maintain a controlled gap. The inversion uses the complex reflection coefficient and a probe-specific admittance model, so the result is sensitive to surface flatness, contact pressure, bubbles, and sample thickness.

For porous media, the probe measures a weighted near-surface volume containing water, solid, and possibly air. A reported “water permittivity” is valid only if the solid fraction, saturation, pore geometry, and mixing or effective-medium model are specified. Open-ended coaxial, transmission-line, and free-space approaches are established classes of liquid dielectric measurement; a 2019 Scientific Reports study demonstrated quasi-optical D-band characterization of de-ionized water.

Turning VNA S-parameters into permittivity

  1. Calibrate the VNA. Use the appropriate one-port or two-port calibration kit at the probe or fixture reference plane. Record calibration temperature and frequency limits.
  2. Measure standards and controls. Acquire the empty fixture, a known dielectric or liquid, and the water-filled sample. Use identical connectors, cable routing, torque, and settling time.
  3. Remove fixture contributions. Apply a validated de-embedding or port-extension procedure only when its assumptions match the fixture. Do not subtract a constant capacitance across a broadband, lossy measurement unless the model demonstrates that this is valid.
  4. Convert S to the model’s variables. Transform S-parameters to impedance, admittance, or ABCD parameters as required by the electromagnetic or equivalent-circuit model.
  5. Fit complex data simultaneously. Fit amplitude and phase over the selected band, with ε′, ε″ or σ, and any nuisance parameters constrained to physically plausible values. A fit to magnitude alone can hide a calibration error.
  6. Validate with a second condition. Change channel filling, temperature, or a known reference liquid. A model that fits only one state is not evidence that the extracted permittivity is unique.

The inversion is part of the measurement. Two different combinations of permittivity, conductivity, and parasitic capacitance can produce similar low-frequency S-parameters. Broadband data and an independently measured geometry reduce that ambiguity.

Frequency, conductivity, and relaxation

Choose the frequency span from the physics, not from the nominal range of the instrument. At low frequency, ions accumulate at interfaces and electrodes, creating Maxwell–Wagner and electrode-polarization effects. At higher frequency, displacement current becomes more prominent; molecular relaxation and the fixture’s own resonances then shape the spectrum.

Confined water can be highly lossy. Wang et al. observed conductivity peaks of several S m−1 in the thinnest channels. If conductivity is omitted from the fit, the algorithm may assign conductive loss to an artificially high dielectric constant. Report σ with ε′, including the frequency at which each value applies.

Use a frequency sweep wide enough to show a transition or plateau. A single point, even at a carefully chosen frequency, cannot establish whether the observed response is intrinsic water polarization or a parasitic path through the walls and electrolyte.

Why confined water is not always “80”

The familiar room-temperature bulk-water value near 80 refers to a particular low-frequency, bulk, approximately isotropic condition. Nanoconfinement changes hydrogen-bond orientation, density, ion distribution, and interfacial polarization. Strongly hydrophilic surfaces can align dipoles and suppress or enhance a component of the response depending on field direction and frequency.

Zhu et al. (RSC Advances, 2020) used grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and concentric radial shells for water in a hydrophilic silica cylindrical nanopore. Their reduced dielectric response near the surface was associated with strong orientation of water dipoles. This is a model result, not a universal calibration recipe.

Underwood et al. (ACS Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2022) simulated charged pores from 0.3 to 5 nm across frequencies from 0.3 GHz to 30 THz and found strong, anisotropic confinement effects on static relative permittivity. Those ranges illustrate why a value must be labeled by pore width, charge state, frequency, and tensor component.

Sample preparation and metadata checklist

  • Channel height and width, with the measurement method and uncertainty.
  • Wall material, roughness, functionalization, wettability, and surface charge or electrochemical state.
  • Water source and purity, dissolved-gas treatment, ionic strength, pH where relevant, and contaminants.
  • Temperature at calibration and during the sweep.
  • Filling pressure or capillary procedure, equilibration time, refill history, and evidence that bubbles are absent.
  • Electrode layout, field orientation, tip or probe dimensions, and distance from the sensing element to the liquid.
  • Frequency points, AC amplitude, DC bias, integration time, averaging, and instrument calibration date.
  • Whether the reported value is local, channel averaged, or an effective mixture of water and solid.

Uncertainty and model sensitivity

Report a confidence interval or uncertainty budget rather than only a fitted central value. Include calibration-standard uncertainty, dimensional tolerances, temperature drift, repeatability, and sensitivity to the assumed conductivity and wall permittivity. Run the inversion with plausible alternative geometries and boundary conditions. If ε changes dramatically when a wall thickness or contact gap is varied within its measurement uncertainty, the experiment does not yet support a precise dielectric constant.

For anisotropic water, fit ε// and ε⊥ separately only when the field geometry provides independent sensitivity to both. Otherwise report the modeled effective component and state that the experiment does not resolve the full tensor.

Can an LCR meter measure confined-water permittivity?

An LCR meter can measure an impedance or capacitance of a suitably designed cell, but a generic handheld meter cannot reproduce nanoscale SDM results. It usually offers limited frequency points, uncertain fixture parasitics, and no way to separate ionic conduction from dielectric polarization in a nanometre channel.

An LCR-based experiment can be defensible for a larger, low-loss, well-characterized capacitor when the cell is calibrated, electrode polarization is modeled, and the geometry is known. For lossy water or broadband confinement studies, a calibrated vector network analyzer with a calibration kit, transmission-line fixture, or open-ended coaxial probe provides the complex data needed for a more reliable inversion.

Common failure modes and fixes

The extracted permittivity is implausibly high

Check whether conductivity, electrode polarization, or an unmodeled fringe field was forced into ε′. Refit complex data with σ as an independent parameter, verify the reference material, and inspect the high-frequency plateau rather than relying on a single low-frequency point.

Results vary between fills

Look for bubbles, incomplete wetting, evaporation, contamination, or changing ionic concentration. Standardize the filling sequence and equilibration time, and record the sample temperature for every run.

Different probes give different values

Compare their sensing volumes and field orientations before comparing numbers. An SDM tip samples a local region; an open-ended coax averages a fringing volume; a transmission line averages the electrically active section of the channel. Use the same reference liquid and a shared geometry model where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fit is good but not unique

Extend the bandwidth, add phase data, measure a second geometry or reference liquid, and constrain dimensions independently. A visually good fit does not prove that ε and σ are separately identifiable.

The signal follows topography

In SDM, correlate dielectric contrast with the AFM height channel. Adjust lift height and drive amplitude, and simulate the tip over a wall step without water. Fringe fields and mechanical cross-talk can mimic a liquid response.

A practical decision path

  1. If the liquid occupies a channel only a few nanometres high and a local value is required, use SDM or a specialist institutional measurement service.
  2. If the liquid occupies a microfluidic or porous structure with a measurable ensemble volume, start with a calibrated transmission-line or open-ended-coaxial setup.
  3. If the sample is highly conductive, prioritize broadband complex measurements and include σ in the model from the beginning.
  4. If walls are charged or chemically active, characterize that state and avoid transferring a value measured in a neutral reference channel.
  5. If the result will be compared with simulation, match frequency, field orientation, pore width, charge, temperature, and averaging volume before comparing numerical values.

How to report the result

A reproducible statement should read like: “At 25 °C, water of specified ionic strength in a channel 4.0 ± 0.2 nm high was measured with an AC-biased AFM tip in an in-plane geometry from 10 kHz to 3 GHz. The fitted ε// and σ were obtained from a 3D model containing the measured tip and hBN reference; the uncertainty includes geometry, calibration, and model sensitivity.” Add the data-processing definition of complex permittivity and identify whether values are local or averaged.

Do not publish “the dielectric constant of confined water” without these qualifiers. The useful result is a frequency-dependent, geometry-specific dielectric response that another laboratory can reproduce.

Frequently Asked Questions

What probe measures dielectric constant in a microchannel?

A calibrated transmission-line fixture or open-ended coaxial dielectric probe can measure a microchannel when its standards, reference plane, parasitics, and electromagnetic model are documented. The probe returns an effective response over its sensing volume, not necessarily a local molecular value.

How do I distinguish ε from conductivity in a water measurement?

Measure broadband complex amplitude and phase, include conductivity as an independent fit parameter, and verify the result with a known reference or a second geometry. A single low-frequency capacitance reading cannot reliably separate the two.

Is an SDM result comparable with a pore-averaged RF result?

Only after matching field orientation, frequency, temperature, geometry, and averaging volume. SDM is local and can resolve an in-plane component; an RF fixture generally returns an ensemble effective value.
