Because one byte contains eight bits, multiply a Steam reading in MB/s by 8 to compare it with a plan in Mbit/s; divide a plan’s Mbit/s figure by 8 to estimate the equivalent in MB/s.
Convert Steam’s download speed to Mbit/s or MB/s
The capital B in MB/s means bytes; the lowercase b in Mbit/s means bits. There are eight bits in one byte. Keep the time unit—per second—the same in both values.

- MB/s to Mbit/s: multiply by 8. For example, 10 MB/s × 8 = 80 Mbit/s.
- Mbit/s to MB/s: divide by 8. For example, 100 Mbit/s ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s.
These are unit conversions, not guarantees of the rate a download will reach. Steam Support gives a similar example: 768 KB/s × 8 = 6144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second, as most internet service providers state it. See Steam Support’s explanation of slow downloads and content-server connections.

Change Steam’s speed display to bits
Steam Support says the client can display download information in bits, which can make its reading easier to compare with an internet plan. The download-related controls are under Steam > Settings > Downloads. Look there for the download speed display preference; its precise wording or placement may vary with the client layout.

Steam’s download management guidance identifies the Downloads settings area. If you leave Steam displaying bytes, use the ×8 conversion rather than comparing the number directly with a plan’s Mbit/s figure.
Know what each speed reading measures
An ISP plan, an internet speed test, a computer’s local network link, and an active Steam download are not interchangeable measurements. Compare them only after matching units and identifying what each reading represents.

- ISP plan: the advertised connection rate, commonly stated in Mbit/s.
- Internet speed test: a test of the internet connection; Steam recommends using one when checking connection performance.
- System tray or network properties: often shows the speed of the connection between your device and the local network, not the speed of the internet connection. Steam Support specifically cautions that this reading does not represent internet speed.
- Steam download: the rate of that transfer at that moment. It can vary with the download and what Steam is doing while receiving and installing data.
For a useful comparison, check the same device and network, note whether other downloads or installation activity are happening, and record the Steam download region. A low Steam reading by itself does not establish that the ISP is under-delivering.

Troubleshoot a Steam download that looks slow
1. Check the units and comparison
First confirm whether Steam is showing MB/s or Mbit/s. Convert one value before comparing it with your plan or a speed-test result. Also make sure you are not using a local-network link reading as though it measured internet speed.

2. Try the current or a nearby download region
Steam selects a content server based on location. Steam recommends checking the download region and trying nearby regions if downloads are slow. Find the region control in Steam > Settings > Downloads, then compare the download under otherwise similar conditions. See Steam’s content-server troubleshooting steps.
3. Consider installation work
Receiving a game is not the only work Steam may be doing. Installation can be CPU- and disk-intensive, and those tasks can constrain the rate Steam reports while it processes the download. Steam’s hardware guidance describes the CPU and disk demands involved. A low reading during installation is therefore not, on its own, proof of a slow internet connection.

4. Isolate Wi-Fi issues on Steam Deck, if relevant
For a Steam Deck, Steam says a direct wired connection can help isolate wireless interference. Connecting over Ethernet requires additional hardware, such as a compatible USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter; it is an optional diagnostic, not a requirement for measuring or converting download speed.
