Repeat ARPES at several photon energies to test whether a feature is surface- or bulk-derived, and interpret the result using the crystal and magnetic symmetries of the ordered state. Quantum-oscillation measurements can independently constrain Fermi-surface geometry, but neither one spectral feature nor one oscillation is, by itself, proof of a topological phase.
The essential discipline is to separate observation from interpretation: ARPES observes energy-versus-momentum intensity, SARPES observes a spin-dependent signal, and topology is inferred only after those observations agree with symmetry analysis, material-specific calculations and, where possible, complementary measurements.

What “spin splitting” and “topological state” mean in an antiferromagnet
In a spin-degenerate band, two opposite-spin states have the same energy at a given crystal momentum. Magnetic order, spin–orbit coupling and crystal symmetry can remove that degeneracy at selected momenta. In an antiferromagnet, the outcome is not simply “magnetism splits every band.” The combined operation of time reversal, translation, inversion and other crystal symmetries can preserve degeneracies in some directions while allowing momentum-dependent splitting in others. A calculated splitting that symmetry permits is therefore a prediction, not a measurement.
A topological electronic state is likewise a relationship between the occupied bands, their symmetries and the connectivity of states across momentum space. A surface band that crosses a bulk gap, a protected crossing, or an unusual Fermi-surface pocket may be consistent with a topological phase, but similar-looking features can arise from ordinary surface resonances, band bending, matrix-element effects or unresolved bulk bands. The measurement plan must test those alternatives.

ARPES is the central spectroscopy because it records the kinetic energy and emission direction of photoelectrons and converts them into the binding energy and crystal momentum of the initial electronic state. Reviews of ARPES applications to topological materials describe it as a direct probe of bulk and surface electronic structure, subject to the usual photoemission and matrix-element limitations (Nature Reviews Physics, 2019).
What each method actually measures
| Method | Direct observation | What it can help distinguish | What still requires inference |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARPES | Photoelectron intensity versus energy and in-plane momentum | Band dispersions, Fermi-surface contours, surface-like and bulk-derived states when photon energy is varied | Spin polarization, topological invariant and the origin of weak or overlapping features |
| Photon-energy-dependent ARPES | Changes in intensity and dispersion as photon energy changes the sampled out-of-plane momentum | States with little out-of-plane dispersion (often surface-like) versus states that disperse through the bulk Brillouin zone | A unique surface assignment; matrix elements and final-state effects can mimic or hide dispersion |
| SARPES | Spin-dependent photoelectron counts and derived polarization for selected energies and momenta | Spin character and momentum-dependent spin texture of a band | Whether the band is topological; polarization can be reduced by resolution, domains and geometry |
| Quantum oscillations | Periodic variation of a transport or thermodynamic signal with magnetic field | Extremal Fermi-surface areas, effective masses and scattering information | A topological phase from an oscillation phase alone; interpretation depends on field angle, symmetry and pocket structure |
This division prevents a common error: calling a spin-integrated ARPES intensity map a spin measurement. The map contains no direct spin analyzer. Conversely, a SARPES polarization signal does not automatically establish a nontrivial topological invariant.
Step 1: Establish the band structure with conventional ARPES
Prepare and characterize the sample
Use a well-ordered single crystal or an equivalently characterized thin film, and document its crystallographic orientation, surface termination, cleaving or growth method, antiferromagnetic transition temperature and domain state. Measurements should record temperature, pressure or vacuum conditions, photon energy, photon polarization, analyzer settings and the orientation of the sample relative to the entrance slit. These details are needed to reproduce matrix-element changes and to compare spectra taken above and below magnetic ordering.
Determine the momentum convention before collecting a large map. The analyzer directly resolves the momentum parallel to the surface; the perpendicular component is obtained from a photon-energy-dependent final-state model and is less direct. Mark high-symmetry directions using diffraction, Laue measurements or a known surface Brillouin zone rather than relying on the sample holder alone.
Acquire energy–momentum cuts and Fermi-surface maps
- Survey the Fermi level: collect a wide angular and energy window to locate all visible bands and possible surface states.
- Map the Fermi surface: integrate intensity in a narrow window around the chemical potential, while also saving the unintegrated data.
- Take symmetry-line cuts: measure along several crystallographic directions, including directions related by the magnetic point group.
- Repeat at multiple temperatures: compare spectra in the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic regimes when the transition is experimentally accessible.
- Record polarization: switch photon polarization where practical; changes in intensity can identify orbital character but are not, on their own, evidence of topology.
Background subtraction, curvature plots and second-derivative images can make weak dispersions easier to see, but they also create artificial edges. Always retain and inspect the raw intensity and an independently processed version. Fit peaks only when the energy and momentum resolution, linewidth and background model are reported.
Identify candidate crossings without overclaiming
Look for linear-looking dispersions, band inversions, avoided crossings, surface states inside projected bulk gaps and connectivity between high-symmetry points. At this stage describe them as “candidate” features. A crossing may be unresolved, a surface resonance may merge with the bulk continuum, and a gap may be smaller than the instrumental resolution. Topological assignment requires comparison with a calculation using the measured crystal structure and magnetic order, not visual resemblance alone.
Step 2: Use photon energy to separate surface and bulk contributions
Changing the incident photon energy changes the photoelectron’s inferred out-of-plane momentum. A state confined near the surface should show little or no periodic dispersion with that momentum, whereas a three-dimensional bulk band generally changes as successive bulk Brillouin zones are sampled. The ARPES review identifies vacuum-ultraviolet and soft-X-ray photon-energy scans as practical ways to distinguish surface and bulk states (Nature Reviews Physics, 2019).

A practical photon-energy scan
- Keep the geometry fixed: use the same sample orientation and analyzer acceptance so that intensity changes are not confused with a rotated cut.
- Choose a photon-energy series: cover a range that samples more than one expected bulk Brillouin zone; include both vacuum-ultraviolet and, where available, soft-X-ray measurements.
- Track the feature: fit or trace its energy and in-plane momentum at every photon energy, rather than comparing isolated images.
- Compare periodicity: a repeatable out-of-plane dispersion supports a bulk assignment; a feature that remains at nearly the same energy and in-plane momentum supports a surface-like assignment.
- Check intensity effects: note photon-energy values at which the feature disappears or brightens, because photoemission matrix elements can suppress a real state.
“No dispersion” is not a guarantee of a surface state. Finite resolution, an unfavorable orbital matrix element, a poorly known inner potential or a quasi-two-dimensional bulk band can produce the same appearance. Conversely, a surface state can acquire apparent modulation through final-state effects. Report the scan range, resolution, polarization and fitting uncertainty before assigning dimensionality.
Why soft-X-ray ARPES can help
Higher-energy photons generally provide better access to bulk-sensitive momentum information and can reduce some surface sensitivity, while often sacrificing energy and angular resolution. The trade-off means that a soft-X-ray map should complement, not replace, a high-resolution low-energy map. Agreement between the two regimes is stronger evidence than either map considered in isolation.
Step 3: Measure spin polarization with SARPES
SARPES adds a spin detector to an ARPES instrument. It measures an asymmetry in counts for opposite detector channels and converts that asymmetry, after calibration, into a component of the photoelectron spin polarization. The detector geometry selects which spin component is analyzed; rotating the sample or detector changes the relationship between the measured component and the crystal axes. A methods study describing spin-polarized measurements discusses both Mott and very-low-energy electron-diffraction (VLEED) detectors (Physical Review B, 2021).
How to plan a spin measurement
- Choose the target band: use a conventional ARPES map to select a momentum and energy where the candidate splitting is resolved and the signal is sufficiently intense.
- Define the spin axes: document the detector’s longitudinal, transverse and, if available, out-of-plane sensitivity relative to the crystal and analyzer slit.
- Calibrate the detector: determine analyzing power, efficiency, channel balance and instrumental asymmetry with the detector’s accepted calibration procedure.
- Acquire paired channels: measure the same state in opposite scattering channels or with the detector spin quantization axis reversed.
- Repeat symmetry-related points: compare +k and −k, equivalent crystal directions and momenta related by the antiferromagnetic symmetry.
- Propagate uncertainty: include counting statistics, background subtraction, polarization-dependent intensity and calibration uncertainty in the reported spin polarization.
For a basic channel-asymmetry measurement, the raw difference between two count rates is divided by their sum and then corrected by the detector’s effective analyzing power. The exact formula and sign convention depend on the detector and electronics; publish those conventions rather than presenting an uncalibrated asymmetry as a universal polarization.

What a convincing SARPES result looks like
A robust claim shows the spin polarization on the band of interest, its reversal or transformation at symmetry-related momenta, and control measurements on neighboring bands or background regions. The signal should survive reasonable changes in fitting window and background model. If two unresolved bands with opposite spin character overlap, the measured polarization can average toward zero even when each band is spin split. Conversely, a matrix-element imbalance can create an apparent polarization if detector asymmetries are not removed.
SARPES establishes the spin character of detected photoelectrons. It does not by itself prove that the initial state is topological, nor does it guarantee that the measured polarization equals the spin expectation value of a pristine bulk eigenstate; photoemission selection rules and the final state influence the signal.
Step 4: Interpret splitting using antiferromagnetic and crystal symmetry
Before labeling a separation as altermagnetic or otherwise symmetry-driven, determine which magnetic space group describes the sample in the measured phase. The expected degeneracies and allowed spin splitting depend on the ordered moment direction, crystal operations, antiferromagnetic translations and domains. A 2026 review of symmetry-driven spin splitting emphasizes that ARPES and SARPES assignments in candidate compounds remain material-specific and, in some cases, debated (Nano Convergence, 2026).

Build a symmetry test, not a visual argument
- List the surviving operations: identify inversion, time reversal, combined antiunitary operations, mirrors, rotations and magnetic translations for the actual ordered structure.
- Predict protected lines and planes: calculate where degeneracies must remain and where splitting is symmetry-allowed.
- Compare momentum directions: measure both allowed and forbidden directions. A splitting seen only where it is expected is more informative than a generic separation.
- Check domains: opposite antiferromagnetic domains can exchange or cancel spin signals. Use domain imaging, field-cooling protocols where physically appropriate, or domain-aware modeling.
- Separate energy separation from spin separation: two peaks may represent different orbitals, domains or surface terminations. SARPES must connect the peaks to opposite or distinct spin channels.
Report three statements separately: what symmetry predicts, what ARPES resolves and what SARPES measures. For example, “the magnetic space group permits splitting along this direction” is a theoretical statement; “two dispersing peaks are separated by the fitted energy difference” is an ARPES observation; “the peaks carry opposite measured polarization components” is a SARPES result.
Step 5: Test a topological interpretation with complementary evidence
Compare measured bands with magnetic calculations
Use a calculation that includes the measured crystal structure, magnetic order, spin–orbit coupling and, where relevant, the experimentally determined surface termination. Project the calculated bands onto the surface and bulk Brillouin zones before comparing them with ARPES. Check whether the predicted surface state connects the correct bulk band projections and whether the predicted spin texture matches the measured component, including its sign convention.
Topological indices, symmetry indicators or Berry-curvature calculations are theoretical diagnoses. They become experimentally persuasive when the corresponding gap, crossing or surface connectivity is observed and alternative trivial explanations are excluded. A single bright line in an intensity map is insufficient.
Use quantum oscillations as a Fermi-surface cross-check
In a metal, Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations in transport or de Haas–van Alphen oscillations in thermodynamic quantities reveal extremal Fermi-surface areas through their field-periodic behavior. Rotating the magnetic field maps how those areas change with orientation; temperature and field dependence can constrain effective mass and scattering. The review Fermiology of Topological Metals explains why oscillation phase and waveform must be interpreted with field direction, symmetry class and pocket geometry in mind (Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics, 2023).
An apparent phase offset can be altered by three-dimensional curvature, Zeeman splitting, magnetic breakdown, multiple close frequencies, chemical-potential oscillation and the choice of Landau-fan indexing. Closely spaced or touching pockets can distort the waveform and make a single-frequency fit misleading. Therefore:

Recent discussions include RuO2 as a debated candidate and report ARPES-related claims involving KV2Se2O, Rb1−δV2Te2O, MnTe, CrSb and MnTe2. The 2026 perspective presents these systems to illustrate how assignments depend on the compound, magnetic order, momentum direction and measurement method (Nano Convergence, 2026). Treat each as a case study, not as a universal demonstration: the existence of a candidate feature does not establish that every sample, surface termination or domain has the same state, and a complete independent-replication record should not be assumed.

How strong is the evidence?
The strongest practical case combines four mutually consistent results: ARPES resolves the relevant bands; photon-energy scans establish whether they are surface or bulk derived; SARPES measures the predicted spin character with calibrated geometry; and symmetry-aware calculations explain why that splitting and connectivity occur. Quantum oscillations can then verify the bulk Fermi surface and test its angular evolution. If one element is missing, narrow the claim accordingly—for example, call a feature a “spin-splitting candidate” when only spin-integrated ARPES is available, or a “topology-consistent surface state” when the invariant has not been independently established.
Magnetic topological materials are especially sensitive to sample termination, domains, reconstruction and the exact ordered phase. A careful article or paper therefore identifies the observation first, states the inference second and names the remaining ambiguity instead of turning a compelling spectrum into a categorical proof. Broader context on magnetic topological materials and their experimental challenges is reviewed in Nature (2021).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you measure spin splitting in an antiferromagnet?
Map the bands with ARPES, then use calibrated SARPES to measure the spin polarization of the separated features at symmetry-related momenta. Compare the result with the magnetic space-group prediction and rule out orbital, domain and matrix-element effects.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can ARPES distinguish a topological surface state from a bulk state?
Repeat the measurement over photon energy. Bulk states usually disperse with the sampled out-of-plane momentum, while surface-like states show little such dispersion. Because matrix elements and final-state effects can mimic either behavior, combine the scan with surface-projected calculations and other measurements.
Does spin-resolved ARPES prove that a material is topological?
No. SARPES directly measures a spin-dependent photoelectron signal, not a topological invariant. A topological claim also needs symmetry analysis, appropriate calculations and evidence that the observed state is not a trivial surface resonance or unresolved bulk band.
Why can a quantum-oscillation phase be ambiguous?
The phase depends on field orientation, three-dimensional pocket geometry, magnetic symmetry, Zeeman effects, multiple close frequencies and fitting choices. It should be interpreted together with ARPES and material-specific calculations rather than used as a standalone topology test.
