Polymarket TWAP lag is not one delay. To measure it, align three events: a move in an underlying spot price, a response in the relevant reference price or TWAP, and a later change in the Polymarket outcome-token market. Measure spot-to-reference and reference-to-market timing separately. A gap by itself does not show oracle failure or a profitable trading opportunity.
What does “Polymarket TWAP lag” mean?
It describes a possible sequence of delayed responses, not a single price comparison. The three prices involved have different meanings and may be observed on different clocks:

| Series | What it represents | What a change can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Spot price | An exchange observation for the underlying asset. | When and how the selected spot venue recorded the move. |
| Reference price or TWAP | A reference value; a TWAP is averaged over a time window. | How the reference responded to observations, including the effect of its averaging window. |
| Polymarket outcome-token price | An order-book price that reflects the market-implied probability of an outcome. | When displayed or traded prices in that contract changed. |
A token price is not the underlying asset’s spot price. Comparing their raw values—for example, an asset price in dollars with a token price on a probability scale—does not measure lag. The useful question is how long each series takes to meet a predeclared response rule after the preceding event.
Why can a TWAP differ from spot?
A TWAP averages observations across a defined time window. After a sudden spot move, earlier observations remain part of that average until they age out, so the TWAP can stay closer to the pre-move level by design. That divergence alone does not establish a delayed or malfunctioning feed.

Before interpreting a gap, identify the reference feed, the averaging window, and the contract to which the reference is relevant. The available evidence does not establish one universal reference feed or TWAP window for every Polymarket market. Do not treat “Chainlink TWAP” as a description of all Polymarket contracts unless the particular market’s documentation supports it.
How to measure the delay
Set the event and response rules before collecting data. Otherwise, it is easy to select only large moves or favorable examples and make the observed timing look more consistent than it is.

- Choose the market and its relevant reference. Record the contract, the Yes or No token being analyzed, the underlying asset, spot venue, reference source, and TWAP window where applicable. Do not assume the token price tracks spot directly.
- Define a spot event in advance. For example, specify an absolute return threshold over a fixed interval. The threshold and interval are study design choices, not universal settings. Apply the same rule to the entire observation period.
- Capture all three series with timestamps. For each event, record the spot value and timestamp; reference or TWAP value and timestamp; and Polymarket price or quote timestamp. Where available, preserve both source-time and receive-time. They distinguish when a value was recorded from when your system received it.
- Specify what counts as a response. Set a measurable threshold for a reference change and a separate one for a market change. Examine several fixed response horizons rather than choosing a horizon after seeing the results. Record the midpoint, spread, and executable book depth where available.
- Calculate the components separately. Let
t_spotbe the event time,t_referencethe first reference response under your rule, andt_marketthe first market response under its rule. Then spot-to-reference delay ist_reference − t_spot, reference-to-market delay ist_market − t_reference, and end-to-end delay ist_market − t_spot. Report the rules and clock basis alongside each result. - Repeat across conditions. Report the full distribution of measured delays, not only a mean or a notable event. Separate calm and high-volatility periods, and, when feasible, repeat the analysis using more than one spot venue.
Getting timestamped Polymarket observations
Polymarket Institute’s CLOB documentation says a request needs the specific Yes or No token_id. Its price-history example returns timestamped {t, p} observations. The Institute also describes Data API trade history and provides separate order-book and pricing documentation covering market data such as spreads and tick sizes. Use the token and data source that match the contract and measure you intend to analyze; a trade record, a historical price point, and a current order book are not interchangeable observations.

How to tell a quote change from a tradable price
A displayed midpoint is calculated from quotes; it does not show that a trade could have executed there. A midpoint can move because one side of the book changed, even if the price available to buy or sell did not move by the same amount.

- Track bid, ask, and spread alongside the midpoint.
- Check available depth at the prices relevant to the proposed trade; a thin or disappearing book can make a displayed change unfillable at size.
- Keep quote changes separate from executed trades. A trade-history observation documents a trade, while a quote or midpoint describes the order book at an observation time.
- When estimating response time, state whether the market response means a midpoint move, a bid or ask move, or a trade at a qualifying price. These definitions can produce different results.
What can distort an apparent lag?
Observed timing depends on more than the reference feed. Check these factors before calling a measured gap “Polymarket lag”:
- Clock alignment: mismatched timestamps, receive delays, and differences between source time and collection time can create or hide apparent delay.
- Averaging: the TWAP window can make a reference respond more gradually than spot without indicating a fault.
- Market microstructure: spread changes, shallow or disappearing depth, and midpoint bias affect when a quote appears to respond and whether it is executable.
- Event selection: selecting only large spot moves or a convenient time interval can bias the measured distribution.
- Venue and volatility: spot venues may not record identical observations, and response patterns may differ between calm and volatile periods.
- Different units: an asset’s spot return and an outcome token’s probability-price change are not directly comparable without a stated normalization and interpretation.
For comparisons across markets or periods, keep timestamp quality, feed and averaging window, liquidity and spread, midpoint versus executable price, event threshold, sampling interval, spot venue, and volatility regime visible. A comparison that changes several of these at once cannot isolate which factor explains a difference.

Does measured lag show a profitable strategy?
No. A measured delay is a descriptive result, not proof of an exploitable edge. A strategy claim would also need to survive event-selection checks, realistic spreads and execution costs, available depth, latency, and testing on data not used to choose the event or response rules. Displayed midpoint movement alone is not evidence of a fillable opportunity.

The available evidence does not establish a published statistic for the size, distribution, or profitability of Polymarket TWAP lag. A hypothetical SOL price sequence and a Python example using synthetic data illustrate a measurement pipeline; neither is a reported observation of Polymarket performance.

What existing Polymarket data can—and cannot—establish
The June 2026 Polymarket-v1 Database preprint by Boka Qin and Rui Yang reports an archive of 1.20 billion trade records across 1.30 million markets and $61 billion in nominal volume, spanning 2022-11-21 through 2026-04-28. Those figures describe the preprint’s archive scale, not TWAP lag. The authors also report 49.83% tick-rule accuracy and 50.51% bulk-volume-classification accuracy for aggregate trade-direction classification, cautioning that classification errors can affect downstream microstructure metrics. Those results do not measure lag or establish profitability.
Accordingly, report a timing result as a result under explicit event definitions, data sources, clocks, and price measures—not as a universal Polymarket delay. Keep the observed response sequence distinct from any explanation of its cause.
