There is no single meaningful “flight time” or “payload capacity” number for a multirotor. A defensible result is a repeatable measurement: document the complete takeoff mass, measure and calibrate battery voltage and current, define the flight profile and safe endpoint, and record wind, elevation, temperature, battery condition, and reserve behavior. Without those details, two apparently similar endurance figures cannot be compared.
This guide provides a practical test method for answering three questions: how much payload the aircraft carries, how long it flies with that payload, and how much electrical power and energy it uses.

What you are actually measuring
Payload is the useful load added to the aircraft, not the aircraft’s total mass. The tested takeoff mass includes the frame, motors, propellers, flight controller, wiring, battery, cameras, landing gear, telemetry, power monitor, and payload. A payload claim without the associated takeoff mass is incomplete because the battery and measurement hardware also consume lift and energy.

Power use is the electrical demand over time. Instantaneous power is approximately voltage multiplied by current, while whole-flight energy requires integrating that changing power over the flight.

| Quantity | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Payload mass | Mass of the mission equipment or carried load | Shows the useful load independently of the aircraft |
| Takeoff mass | Complete ready-to-fly mass, including battery and sensors | Determines the lift and energy burden actually tested |
| Endurance | Start condition, flight profile, endpoint, and elapsed time | Defines what the reported minutes mean |
| Power | Time-stamped voltage and current measurements | Reveals demand during hover, climb, cruise, and descent |
| Energy | Integrated watt-hours or a clearly identified capacity estimate | Allows comparison of consumption over the same test interval |
The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal multirotor endurance protocol. Report the method used rather than presenting a best-case hover or a manufacturer’s rating as a field expectation.
Define the aircraft and payload before testing
Freeze the configuration
Write down the aircraft model or airframe description, motor and propeller combination, firmware version, relevant flight parameters, battery identity, and battery condition. Keep camera mounts, wiring, guards, landing gear, telemetry radios, and other accessories unchanged between comparison flights. A changed cable or sensor can alter both mass and aerodynamic drag.
Separate payload from operating equipment
Define what counts as payload for your mission. A camera carried for the mission may be payload; a power monitor used only to conduct the test is measurement equipment. State both categories so another operator can reproduce the setup. If the payload has its own battery, include that battery in the payload definition and in total takeoff mass, and say so explicitly.

Weigh the complete ready-to-fly aircraft
Measure the aircraft after the battery, payload, and measurement hardware are installed. Record the payload mass separately and report the complete takeoff mass. The available guidance identifies payload as an endurance factor but does not prescribe a particular scale or standardized weighing procedure. Use a scale appropriate to the aircraft’s mass range, keep the aircraft supported safely, and record the result and units.
- Airframe and propulsion hardware
- Flight controller, GPS, receiver, telemetry, and wiring
- Battery and battery mounting hardware
- Power module or current sensor
- Camera, gimbal, lights, or other mission equipment
- Payload container, release mechanism, and fasteners
Check the payload limit separately from endurance
A multirotor can be able to lift a mass briefly while having unacceptable control margin or endurance. Increase payload in planned increments only after confirming stable control, motor and electronic temperatures, battery current capability, and a safe landing margin. A payload result should therefore state the tested configuration and conditions, not imply that every aircraft of the same nominal size can carry the same load.
Install and calibrate a real voltage and current monitor
Choose a measurement path
Use a supported power module, ESC telemetry system, or another genuine voltage-and-current monitor connected to the flight stack. A battery monitor can supply the measurements used by battery failsafes. Do not treat an estimate derived only from throttle output as a power measurement.
ArduPilot’s Mission Planner documentation describes selecting a supported monitor (or “Other”), entering the sensor parameters, and calibrating voltage against a handheld voltmeter or power analyzer. For current, compare the flight controller’s reading with a power analyzer while following the sensor manufacturer’s range and instructions.

Validate voltage
- Fully assemble the aircraft in the test configuration and connect the battery through the installed monitor.
- Measure the battery at the same electrical point with a calibrated handheld voltmeter or power analyzer.
- Read the flight controller’s reported voltage in the ground-control station or log.
- Adjust the voltage-divider or sensor parameter only as permitted by the flight stack and sensor documentation.
- Repeat the comparison at a second battery state, because an offset that looks acceptable at one voltage may be noticeable elsewhere.
- Record the external instrument, the flight-controller reading, the correction made, and the remaining difference.
Validate current
- Place the reference power analyzer in the battery circuit in a safe configuration suitable for the expected current.
- Compare analyzer current with the onboard reading during a controlled load, such as a restrained motor test or a flight segment approved by your operating procedure.
- Check the result across the aircraft’s normal operating range, not only at idle.
- Record the sensor model, range, calibration point, reference instrument, and observed error.
ArduPilot notes that most current sensors are not very accurate at low currents (less than 3 A) and describes around 10 A as a typical calibration point; Hall-effect monitors are identified as an exception. Those figures are guidance for that documentation, not a universal calibration recipe. Use the sensor’s own specification and choose a calibration point representative of the aircraft’s expected current.
Understand power-module ratings
One documented 3DR-style resistive-shunt module lists an 18 V maximum input and 60 A measurement capability, despite a stated 90 A maximum rating. Its documentation also warns that continuous high current can generate destructive heat and says vendor limits must be confirmed. These values describe that module type only; they do not establish ratings for every power module. Verify voltage, current, connector, conductor, and thermal limits for the hardware installed on your aircraft.
Do not use synthetic current for multicopter power data
Some flight stacks can estimate current from throttle and then tune the estimate using reported battery capacity. ArduPilot explicitly states: “Multicopter and QuadPlane VTOL mode current estimates are inaccurate and not recommended for use.” Use an actual current sensor or ESC telemetry for a multirotor power measurement. A synthetic estimate may be useful for a narrowly defined diagnostic workflow, but it should not be presented as measured current or independent energy data.
Log voltage, current, power, and energy
Capture the full time history
Enable logging for battery voltage, battery current, consumed capacity, and timestamps at a rate that captures changes during takeoff, hover, maneuvering, and landing. Retain the original flight log rather than recording only a displayed average. Note whether values are filtered, averaged, or sampled by the flight controller.
Calculate instantaneous power
At each time sample, calculate P = V × I. If voltage is in volts and current in amps, power is in watts. Current normally rises during takeoff and climbs, varies with wind and maneuvering, and falls during descent; battery voltage also declines under load. A single current number hides those changes.
Integrate energy for the flight
For a whole-flight energy result, integrate power over time. With sampled data, a trapezoidal calculation is suitable:
E(Wh) = Σ[(Pi + Pi+1) / 2 × (ti+1 − ti)] / 3600

Here, power is in watts and time intervals are in seconds. State the sampling interval, treatment of missing samples, and whether the integration begins at motor start, takeoff, or battery connection. If you report watt-hours, identify the voltage and current channels used.

Use recharged capacity as a cross-check
After the flight, recharge the battery with a charger that reports returned milliamp-hours. Compare that value with the flight controller’s consumed-mAh estimate. This is a calibration check, not an independent energy standard: charger efficiency, balancing, cutoff settings, battery temperature, and the point at which charging begins all affect the comparison. Do not convert the result into measured watt-hours without stating the method.
Define an endurance test before flying
Choose the start condition
State whether the test starts with a battery at a specified state of charge, a measured open-circuit voltage, or a freshly charged pack after a defined rest period. Record battery make or identifier, nominal voltage, capacity, cycle history or age if known, and temperature. Packs with different internal resistance can produce different voltage sag and usable energy even when their label capacity is identical.
Choose a repeatable flight profile
Specify altitude, speed, mode, route, hover time, climb and descent segments, and whether the aircraft is manually or automatically flown. A static hover, a forward cruise, and a survey pattern are separate tests. Keep the profile and payload constant when comparing batteries or airframes.
Choose a safe endpoint
Set the endpoint before the flight. Options include a planned landing with a measured reserve, a fixed remaining-capacity threshold, or the activation of a configured battery warning. Do not use motor shutdown or uncontrolled loss of thrust as a normal endpoint. The endpoint must leave enough energy for a controlled landing and comply with the aircraft’s operating rules.
ArduPilot supports configurable low- and critical-battery actions. A sample threshold in its documentation is an example of configuration, not a universal target for every battery, aircraft, or jurisdiction. Verify your own warning and critical actions, test them safely, and state which action or reserve ended each trial.
Repeat the trial
Run multiple flights with the same payload, battery condition, profile, endpoint, and site conditions whenever practical. Report every result and the mean or range only when the number of trials is clear. A single maximum time is a best-case observation, not a reliable expectation.

Record the conditions that change flight time
Flight time is conditional. Federal Aviation Administration material identifies payload, wind, elevation, and temperature as factors. Add the following fields to every test record:
- Payload and takeoff mass: both masses, with units.
- Wind: average direction and speed when available, plus notable gusts.
- Elevation: site elevation and, if relevant, density-altitude conditions.
- Temperature: ambient temperature and battery temperature at launch.
- Battery: identifier, nominal voltage, rated capacity, age or cycle information, charge state, and visible condition.
- Profile: altitude, speed, flight mode, route, and maneuvering.
- Endpoint: time zero definition, warning or reserve threshold, and landing state.
- Instrumentation: monitor type, calibration checks, logging rate, and any reference analyzer.
Use the same site and weather window for comparisons when possible. If conditions differ, preserve the records and qualify the comparison instead of correcting the numbers with an unsupported formula.

- Repeat. Repeat under matched conditions or clearly label the changed variable.
How to compare two aircraft or two payload setups
Change one important variable at a time. If you compare airframes, keep payload definition, flight profile, endpoint, battery state, and site conditions as similar as possible. If you compare payloads, keep the aircraft, battery, propellers, firmware, sensor, and route unchanged.
| Comparison axis | Required statement |
|---|---|
| Mass | Complete takeoff mass and payload mass for each run |
| Battery | Type, nominal voltage, rated capacity, identifier, condition, and starting state |
| Instrumentation | Voltage/current sensor, reference instrument, calibration result, and logging method |
| Flight profile | Altitude, speed, mode, route, hover and maneuver segments |
| Endpoint | Reserve or failsafe action that ended the test |
| Environment | Wind, elevation, ambient temperature, and battery temperature |
| Repeatability | Number of trials and spread of measured times or energy |
Comparing “20 minutes” with “25 minutes” is not meaningful if one result ends at a warning threshold in still air and the other ends after a reserve landing in wind. The endpoint and conditions belong beside the number, not in a footnote.
Common measurement failures and fixes
Reporting only payload
Symptom: A report says the aircraft carried a certain mass but gives no takeoff mass. Fix: weigh and publish both payload and complete ready-to-fly mass, including battery and test hardware.
Trusting an uncalibrated current value
Symptom: The ground station displays current, but no reference comparison was made. Fix: validate against a suitable power analyzer at a representative load and document sensor range and error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCalibrating at an unsuitable current
Symptom: The reading looks stable at idle but is wrong in flight. Fix: account for the documented low-current limitation and calibrate within the sensor’s normal operating range.

Using throttle-derived current
Symptom: A synthetic current estimate is treated as measured electrical data. Fix: install and calibrate a real current monitor or ESC telemetry and label estimates as estimates.
Overlooking power-module heating
Symptom: A module meets a headline current rating but becomes excessively hot. Fix: check continuous-current, voltage, connector, conductor, and thermal limits from the actual vendor documentation; do not infer a safe continuous rating from a short-duration maximum.
Using the failsafe threshold as a universal reserve
Symptom: A sample low-battery parameter is copied to another aircraft. Fix: configure and test low and critical actions for the specific battery, sensor calibration, propulsion load, and operating rules, then report the actual endpoint.
Claiming a best-case flight as normal endurance
Symptom: A calm-weather hover result is used to plan every mission. Fix: report the profile and conditions, repeat the test, and plan operations around a conservative reserve rather than the longest observation.
What a publishable result should contain
A concise test record can follow this structure:
- Aircraft: airframe, propulsion, propellers, firmware, and configuration.
- Mass: payload mass and complete takeoff mass.
- Battery: identifier, nominal voltage, rated capacity, condition, and starting state.
- Measurement: voltage/current hardware, reference instruments, calibration checks, logging rate, and integration method.
- Flight: profile, altitude, speed, mode, route, and elapsed-time definition.
- Endpoint: reserve, warning, or failsafe action; landing battery state.
- Conditions: wind, elevation, ambient temperature, and battery temperature.
- Results: trial-by-trial endurance, integrated watt-hours if calculated, current and voltage traces, and returned milliamp-hours as a cross-check.
- Limitations: sensor range, missing samples, changed conditions, or any departure from the planned profile.
This format lets another operator decide whether the result applies to a different payload or mission. It also makes an apparent improvement traceable: lower energy may come from less wind, a lighter battery, a different endpoint, or a real propulsion change.
Practical interpretation
Use measured data to answer the mission question you actually have. For a payload decision, inspect takeoff mass, control margin, current peaks, temperatures, and reserve—not just hover minutes. For a battery decision, compare integrated energy and voltage behavior under the same profile, not label capacity alone. For a power-system decision, examine current peaks and sustained heating as well as average watts. For flight planning, use repeatable trials with a deliberate reserve and treat environmental conditions as part of the result.
The most useful conclusion is therefore a qualified statement such as: “With this aircraft configuration, this payload and battery, under these weather and site conditions, following this profile and landing at this reserve, the measured endurance was within this range.” That is more actionable than an unsupported universal payload or flight-time number.
