Measure AI-search visibility, visits, and outcomes as separate stages—not as one “AI traffic” number. Use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to track appearances and citations, then use web analytics to measure visits, engagement, and conversions after people reach your site. Keep each platform’s metric and limits beside the numbers you report.

What to measure: exposure, clicks, visits, and outcomes

Organic measurement follows a path, but each stage has a different unit. An impression or citation indicates visibility; a click records a trip from a search surface; an analytics session describes activity on your site. A conversion or key event captures an outcome you have configured. These figures answer related questions, but they are not interchangeable.

Stage Metric and source What it tells you Limit
Google Search exposure Generative AI impressions in Search Console Whether a page appeared in Google Search generative AI features, and how exposure changes over time An impression is not a visit. AI features are also included in the overall Web search type. Google Search Central
Google Discover exposure Generative AI impressions in the Discover report Whether a site link was seen in a generative AI feature in Discover The link must be scrolled into view; dates use Pacific Time, and Search Labs experiments are excluded. Google Search Central
Microsoft AI citations Citations, cited pages, sampled grounding queries, and trends in Bing Webmaster Tools Whether content is cited in supported Microsoft AI experiences and which pages or topics are associated with citations Citations do not establish rank, placement, authority, or a page’s role in a particular answer. Grounding queries are sampled. Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools
Search clicks Clicks and CTR in Search Console or Bing Search Performance Whether people click through from a search surface Clicks are not the same unit as analytics sessions. Bing Search Performance combines traffic from multiple Bing surfaces. Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools
On-site behavior and results Sessions, engagement, landing pages, and configured key events or conversions in analytics What visitors do after arrival and whether visits lead to outcomes Measurement depends on tagging and configuration; source attribution does not reveal every AI answer exposure that preceded a visit. How to measure Google Search and Discover visibility

Search generative AI features

Use the dedicated generative AI performance view in Google Search Console to examine impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, device, and date views. Use the standard Performance report as well when you need the broader Search picture: AI features are included in its Web search type, so that total is not an AI-only measure. Google Search Central announced the reports on June 3, 2026, and said the Search and Discover insights had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. Google Search Central

Generative AI in Discover

Use Discover’s separate generative AI performance report when Discover matters to your audience. Its impression means a link in a generative AI feature was seen after the link scrolled into view. The report provides page, country, and date views; dates use Pacific Time, and Search Labs experiments are excluded. Do not compare its daily totals with another report until you account for that time basis and the different definition of an impression. Google Search Central

How to measure Microsoft AI citations and Bing search traffic

AI Performance report

In Bing Webmaster Tools, use the AI Performance report to follow citations of publisher content across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and selected partner experiences. It reports total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends. Treat these as citation visibility signals: the report does not say where a citation appeared in an answer, whether a cited page ranked, what authority Microsoft assigned it, or what role it played in a specific response. Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Search Performance

For Bing search activity and traffic, consult Bing Search Performance separately from AI Performance. Bing’s performance reporting includes clicks from different surfaces, including web search, chat responses, news answers, image results, and knowledge panels. A citation trend and a click trend therefore describe different things; neither should be substituted for the other. Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools

How to connect visibility to visits and conversions

Use Search Console for Google Search activity before arrival—such as impressions, clicks, and queries—and analytics for visitor activity after arrival. Google describes the distinction as activity “before a person arrived at your website from Google Search” versus visitor interaction with the site. In analytics, review sessions, engagement, landing pages, and the key events or conversions you have configured. Google Analytics Help

Analytics attribution can show that an organic visit or configured event occurred, but it does not identify every AI answer exposure that may have influenced the visit. Do not infer that a cited page generated a session unless your measurement can support that connection.

Build a reporting workflow that keeps metrics comparable

  1. Choose the question and its stage. For “Did we appear?”, use the relevant Search Console impression report or Bing AI citations. For “Did people click?”, use search performance clicks and CTR. For “What happened after arrival?”, use analytics sessions, engagement, and configured events.
  2. Label every number with its source and unit. Name the platform and whether the figure is an impression, citation, click, session, or conversion. Do not combine unlike units into a single AI-traffic total.
  3. Align the comparison window and dimensions. Compare matching dates, countries, devices, and landing pages when available. Account for Discover’s Pacific Time dates and for platform-specific dimensions or coverage.
  4. Keep platform coverage visible. Search Console generative AI Search and Discover reports cover different surfaces; Bing AI Performance covers citations in supported Microsoft experiences; Bing Search Performance covers clicks across Bing surfaces. Note when queries are sampled or a surface is not represented.
  5. Read trends across stages, not as proof of causation. For example, rising citations alongside flat clicks indicates that citation visibility has increased without a corresponding increase in measured clicks during that period. It does not prove why the patterns differ.
  6. Investigate changes at page level. When a trend shifts, inspect affected pages and queries, analytics source/medium and landing-page setup, date and timezone alignment, and any changes to tracking or canonicalization.

Google recommends comparing Search Console clicks and CTR with organic sessions and engagement in analytics, then investigating query and page changes when patterns shift. Its dashboard guidance also explains that the two systems calculate clicks and sessions differently. Google Analytics Help

Why Search Console clicks and analytics sessions differ

Do not expect the two systems’ totals to match exactly. Search Console measures Search activity before arrival; analytics records site visits under its own collection and attribution rules. Google documents possible differences involving time zones, canonical URLs, tagging, traffic breakdowns, non-HTML pages, and bot filtering. Check these factors before treating a gap as evidence of a reporting error. Google Analytics Help

  • Timezone: confirm that the reporting periods use compatible date boundaries.
  • Canonical URLs: Search Console may associate performance with a canonical URL that differs from the URL recorded after arrival.
  • Tagging and collection: analytics can miss or classify visits differently when tags are absent, altered, or configured differently.
  • Breakdowns and page types: traffic grouping and non-HTML pages can contribute to different totals.
  • Filtering: bot filtering and each system’s processing affect what is counted.

Do you need special AI markup to appear?

No AI-specific machine-readable file or markup is required for eligibility in Google’s Search AI features. Google Search Central says: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.” Google Search Central
