To check noise around your home, measure at the place and time that matter, record the measurement duration and metric, and repeat the observation under comparable conditions. A sound level meter or a suitable phone app can help you identify patterns, but a reading alone does not establish a health injury, a legal violation, or whether a noise is unreasonable.
Choose what you need the measurement to tell you
Start with a specific question: Is one event unusually loud? Does a source recur at night? Is a room generally noisy, or does sound increase at a particular outdoor spot? The answer determines where and when to measure, and whether a short reading or a longer average is more useful.

For each observation, note the location, date and time, duration, measurement tool, and circumstances. Record whether windows or doors were open, what source you could hear, and any unusual event. This context makes repeated readings easier to compare and helps keep a brief sound from being mistaken for a normal pattern.

Sound level meter
A sound level meter is a dedicated physical instrument. Its calibration and microphone specifications matter, particularly if you need formal documentation. A consumer meter may help with informal comparisons, but do not assume it meets a professional or legal measurement protocol unless its specifications and the relevant rules establish that.

Phone app
A phone app is convenient for an initial check, but results can vary with the phone’s microphone, the app, and measurement conditions. CDC/NIOSH’s Sound Level Meter App page, published February 16, 2024, describes its iOS app and reports accuracy of ±2 dBA under laboratory validation conditions. NIOSH says Type 2 requirements are met with a calibrated external microphone; this is not a performance claim for every phone, app, or home measurement.
NIOSH says it cannot currently verify Android app accuracy across the fragmented device marketplace. Its app is not intended to replace professional meters or dosimeters or to be used for compliance, as its 2017 app overview explains. Treat an app reading as an initial observation, not as a certified survey.

Measure consistently and record the right metrics
- Pick the relevant listening position. Measure where a person experiences the sound, rather than moving the phone or meter toward a source unless that is the question you are investigating.
- Keep the microphone unobstructed. Hold or place the device consistently and avoid covering its microphone. For its app’s intended use, the NIOSH guide describes positioning the phone roughly 10–12 inches from the hearing zone. That is app-specific guidance, not a universal residential survey protocol. See the NIOSH guide to interpreting the app readouts.
- Choose an interval that fits the sound. A brief, intermittent event may call for noting its maximum or peak; a recurring or steady sound calls for an average over a defined interval as well.
- Record the metric and units. If available, note an equivalent or average level, maximum, and peak separately. NIOSH’s app includes metrics such as LAeq, maximum, peak, time-weighted average, and dose. A peak captures a moment; it does not describe the average exposure across a longer period.
- Repeat the observation. Measure again at a comparable location and time, and log unusual events or changes in conditions. Repetition helps reveal patterns, but it does not turn an uncalibrated phone into an official measurement.
A simple log can use these columns: date and time; location; duration; device or app; weighting (such as dBA); average or LAeq; maximum or peak; and audible source or unusual conditions.

Decibels are logarithmic, not a simple linear scale. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders explains that a 10 dB increase represents ten times the sound intensity and is perceived as about twice as loud. A-weighted decibels, written dBA, adjust readings approximately for how human hearing responds to different frequencies; health guidance commonly uses dBA. See NIDCD’s explanation of how sound is measured.

- 【Widely Used】The noise meter is the use of environmental sound level instrument, can be widely used in such as factories, workshops, schools, residential, office areas, traffic roads, audio and other occasions of sound level measurement. Also suitable for noise engineering, product quality control, health, prevention and control.
- 【Accurate Measurement】Measuring Range:30~130dB ;Accuracy:±1.5dB(94dB@1KHz);Display Resolution:0.1dB
- 【A Weighted Measurement】 A Weighted network (automatic switching range display)
- 【Fast/Slow mode selection】Press the MODE key, you can convert the response speed of the noise meter, FAST fast, SLOW slow
- 【MAX/MIN Measurement】Press RANGE key to measure the maximum value of MAX and minimum value of MIN.A maximum duration of more than 3 seconds is recorded, with a normal test sampling rate of 0.5 seconds. The maximum error is ± 5%.
Always interpret a number with its metric and duration. A sound level at one instant is different from an exposure average over time. For example, NIOSH’s 85 dBA recommended exposure limit is an eight-hour time-weighted average for occupational noise, based on its 1998 recommendation as described in its 2016 discussion of occupational and environmental noise limits. A single home reading of 85 dBA does not by itself prove a health injury, a residential nuisance, or a legal violation.
The World Health Organization says sound levels below 80 dB are unlikely to cause hearing damage. That is general hearing-safety guidance—not a guarantee that a sound will feel comfortable, a target for a quiet home, or a residential noise limit. See WHO’s safe-listening guidance.
Rank #4
- 【Accurate Measurement】 The measuring range of the sound level meter is 30dB to 130dB . Highly accurate with ± 2.0 dB. Real-time monitoring can give you accurate data on the sound level in the area.
- 【A/C Weighted Measurement】 The A weighted simulates the frequency characteristics of low-intensity human ear noise, which is suitable for the detection of ambient noise. The C weighted simulates the frequency properties of high-intensity noises of the human ear, which are suitable for the sound pressure analysis of machine motors and machines. More professional measurement methods provide users with a more perfect user experience.
- 【Fast and Slow Measurement】 The sound level meter has the function of converting the fast and slow response rate. The fast response rate uses a time constant of 0.125s/time for general environmental measurement. The slow response rate uses a 1s/time constant, which is used for environmental measurements with relatively large changes in noise levels.
- 【Digital LCD Display 】 The digital display is a 4-digit LCD display with a resolution of 0.1 dB. Backlit LCD digital display, the reading effect is clearer in dark places. When the battery is low, the LCD display will display a low voltage icon, indicating that the power is low at this point and the battery needs to be replaced.
- 【Convenient and Lightweight 】Tadeto sound level meter is lightweight and easy to carry. It's widely used in factories, transportation, car, baby room and audio system offices, sound quality control in homes, schools, and construction sites.
Separate hearing risk, annoyance, and legal limits
These are different questions, and their thresholds are not interchangeable. Hearing guidance concerns potential damage in relation to sound and exposure duration. Annoyance or speech interference concerns how sound affects people and activities. Legal residential limits depend on the jurisdiction, source, time of day, and measurement procedure.
Recommended Free Tools
NIOSH’s 2016 overview reports historical U.S. EPA guidance values of 55 dBA outdoors and 45 dBA indoors for speech interference and annoyance. These are historical figures reported in that discussion, not current, universally applicable, or automatically enforceable residential limits. Do not use them as a substitute for checking the rule that applies where you live.

Decide what to do with repeated or concerning noise
If you are tracking a recurring household pattern
Keep comparable readings and note when the sound occurs, how long it lasts, and what you can identify as its source. This record can help you describe the pattern to a landlord, neighbor, building manager, or local authority; it is not, by itself, proof that a rule has been broken.
If your concern is hearing exposure
Reduce exposure where practical and consult relevant health guidance. Occupational exposure limits depend on both level and duration; a brief spot reading is not an exposure assessment. NIOSH recommends precautions when readings are at or above 85 dBA in its discussion of occupational exposure, but that benchmark should not be treated as a home-noise ordinance.
If you are making a complaint or need a defensible assessment
Check the current local rule and ask the responsible authority what measurement method, location, timing, and equipment it requires. If you need legal documentation, a source diagnosis, or an assessment that must meet a formal protocol, consult a qualified acoustics or noise professional or the responsible local authority rather than relying on a consumer app.
